Trump set to skewer Biden in convention address

Trump’s attempt to fault Biden’s response to the coronavirus could be especially tricky, given the president’s authority over the country’s actual response. The president’s team has attempted to argue that Biden was slow to sound the alarm as the virus gained steam in the United States.

“As the worst public health crisis in 100 years spread like wildfire, he disregarded warnings from his own experts and cited Chinese government propaganda to justify his inaction. Even after his botched response has cost over 180,000 Americans their lives, he still has no plan to overcome the coronavirus and he has doubled down on trying to take healthcare coverage away from tens of millions of people,” Biden spokesperson Andrew Bates said in response to the excerpts of Trump’s speech.

Bates added of Trump: “He is the only American president to have ever tear gassed peaceful protesters for a photo op. And his advisers are explicitly celebrating violence occurring on his watch. So yes, there never has been a clearer choice.”

The president and his campaign have also been criticized for not articulating detailed plans for a second term.

While Republicans have spent this week going after Biden, the president’s aides contend that the media has filtered the convention and hasn’t adequately highlighted criticisms of Biden’s policies. Over the course of this week, additional policy attacks have been added to Trump’s speech.

The president is also expected to add some uplifting lines, including: ”The Republican Party goes forward united, determined, and ready to welcome millions of Democrats, independents, and anyone who believes in the Greatness of America and the righteous heart of the American people.”

“This towering American spirit has prevailed over every challenge, and lifted us to the summit of human endeavor.”
