Each day of protests across the US could kill up to 540 people from coronavirus, an expert said while blaming mass arrests<\/a> and cops\u2019 use of tear gas for \u201cexacerbating\u201d the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the high end \u2026 we\u2019d expect 54k downstream infections and 540 eventual deaths,\u201d warned Trevor Bedford<\/a>, who has been tracking the pandemic since January.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d give a highly speculative \u2018more than 50 and less than 500<\/a>\u2018 estimate for the number of eventual deaths for each day of protests,\u201d he added in a series of tweets Sunday night modeling the potential dangers of the mass protests.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese deaths will likely be disproportionately among black<\/a> individuals,\u201d he also warned.<\/p>\n

Bedford, a virus expert at Seattle\u2019s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, said the numbers do not represent \u201ca massive spike in cases\u201d given the US has had almost 2 million infections<\/a> and more than 110,000 deaths as of Monday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s still large in absolute numbers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The scientist wrote that there is \u201cno doubt that mass gatherings<\/a> facilitate transmission,\u201d with the concern so bad, New York is opening 15 testing centers solely for protesters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWearing masks and protesting outdoors has to help,\u201d Bedford wrote in a separate thread \u2014 while putting the onus on police.<\/p>\n

\u201cCurrent responses of tear gas, pepper spray and jailing after curfew are actively exacerbating it,\u201d he wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bedford\u2019s warning comes as other studies say tear gas could increase the chances of coronavirus infections \u2014 with asymptomatic carriers also likely to suffer worse from the chemicals, Discover magazine noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolice must seek responses that minimize transmission potential \u2026 Deescalation is even more critical in light of COVID,\u201d Bedford said of the controversy over heavy-handed tactics in some states.<\/p>\n

Bedford fears the protests are just a general trend that \u201cfeels as though we\u2019ve largely given up on controlling the epidemic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of the pandemic, we\u2019re in a terrible situation where addressing systemic racism and bringing economy back online carry health risks,\u201d he tweeted.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a cruel twist<\/a> that the US\u2019s inability to control the epidemic has made it dangerous to protest entrenched police brutality,\u201d he said, calling the \u201charms of systemic racism \u2026 real and utterly pernicious.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
