The recently concluded U.S. political conventions<\/a> offered American voters two separate and distinct views of the world \u2013 one based on authenticity and another on artifice, a member of the European Parliament<\/a> said this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cLooking at the Republican Convention<\/a> for the past two days, you can see such a huge difference,\u201d Jerome Riviere of France, who has served in the multinational body since 2019, said during an appearance on \u201cThe National Pulse\u201d<\/a> with host Raheem Kassam.<\/p>\n

Riviere, who later shared some observations about Hillary Clinton<\/a>, said,\u00a0\u201cThe Democratic Convention<\/a> seemed like a stage — with actors delivering specific lines, trying to give to the American people a specific speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the four nights of the Democrats’ convention, each evening was hosted by a Hollywood celebrity, including\u00a0Eva Longoria<\/a>, Tracee Ellis Ross<\/a>\u00a0and Julia Louis-Dreyfus<\/a>.<\/p>\n

‘More about normal people’<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Republican Convention, meanwhile, \u201cwas all about authenticity,\u201d Riviere said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was quite interesting to see it was more about normal people, telling the American people about their fears, their worries, their pride — what they are hoping for the United States. It is a breath of fresh air and I think this was quite enjoyable to see.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the course of four nights, the GOP convention introduced the nation to everyday Americans such as Madison Cawthorn<\/a>, 25, of North Carolina, who’s now running for Congress after surviving a horrific accident; Sgt. Ann Marie Dorn<\/a>, widow of a retired St. Louis police officer who was fatally shot during a riot; and Carl and Marsha Mueller<\/a>, whose daughter Kayla Mueller was abducted and slain by ISIS terrorists.<\/p>\n

Viewers also watched as President Trump presided over a naturalization ceremony<\/a>, granting legal U.S. citizenship to a group of immigrants.<\/p>\n

Riviere said it was unfortunate that the coronavirus pandemic made large crowds impossible for the GOP gathering \u201cbecause it would have brought even more traction to the Trump candidacy because it felt authentic — with people deciding that they are going to vote because they want to.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not touched by a movie and the stars that were coming at the Democratic Convention were delivering something,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a prop and it was not that good.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the end, I think, the two conventions will make quite a difference,\u201d in what voters decide on Election Day, he concluded.<\/p>\n

Clinton ‘like the Taliban’<\/strong><\/h2>\n

During the same interview, Riviere offered his views on Hillary Clinton\u2019s recent insistence that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden not concede the November election to President Trump under any circumstances.<\/p>\n

Riviere said Clinton\u2019s comments were very revealing about her approach to politics.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hear someone that does not respect the people anymore,\u201d Riviere said.<\/p>\n

He noted that in the 2016 election, when Clinton was the Democratic nominee opposing the political novice Republican Trump, Clinton had used the word \u201cdeplorables\u201d to describe some of Trump\u2019s supporters.<\/p>\n

The remark proved that Clinton \u201chas disdain for the common person,\u201d Riviere said.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe believes that she should be entitled to rule — or her class should be entitled to rule the people — because they know better.\u201d<\/p>\n

To Riviere, the attitude that Clinton brings to politics is \u201ca little bit like the Taliban,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey believe that they knew better and they want to rule the people, whether they liked it or not. It\u2019s the same thing here. She believes she knows better and she should be entitled to be ruling the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Riviere also thanked Clinton, saying her labeling of some voters as \u201cdeplorables\u201d had helped frame the state of politics for many members of the public amid the rise of globalization.<\/p>\n

‘Proud to be deplorables’<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In France, Riviere said, \u201cWe don\u2019t have a word like \u2018deplorables.\u2019 We must thank Hillary Clinton for coining such a term because I think we are all proud to be deplorables.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to say Clinton represented the \u201cwinners of the globalization\u201d \u2013 while those who oppose Clinton politically speak for \u201cthe losers of globalization.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn French, we call them bourgeois, the boheme,\u201d Riviere said. \u201cThese are the people that are winners of the globalization. They can buy a ticket and go for one weekend somewhere with an airline and travel \u2026 and enjoy the fact that it\u2019s easy to travel from one country to the other.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reality of the common man,\u201d he continued, \u201cis that it is still expensive to travel, they need to fight for their job. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to understand that in France, the level of unemployment is above two-digit figures, so it is really high, and people are scared for their jobs. So they are the losers of the globalization.\u201d<\/p>\n

Riviere said the Brexit battle \u2013 the move by Britain to withdraw from the European Union \u2013 grew from ordinary citizens\u2019 rejection of globalization and its effects on their economic security.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo people from the United Kingdom [were] saying, \u2018Look, going with European Union, we keep on losing. We keep on losing job, we keep on losing wealth.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the epiphany in Britain that globalization wasn\u2019t working was \u201cthe first domino \u2026 that led to President Trump being elected four years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn France \u2026 we hope to be another domino in this puzzle, in this vast movement of people taking over their nations,\u201d Riviere added. \u201cAbout populists being able to say, \u2018Look, we are in charge of our country because we love it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
