HARRISBURG, Pa. – Pennsylvania health officials have also turned their attention to another disease related to COVID-19.
State Health Secretary Rachel Levine says some children are developing a serious condition called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome, or MIS-C, as a complication from COVID-19. It’s similar to Kawasaki disease, officials said.
So far, there have been nine confirmed cases in the state, with six possible ones being investigated.
“There is rather limited information about this condition,” Levine said Tuesday. “We don’t know if this is specific to children or can occur in adults. Also, we don’t know specific risk factors or how it is transmitted.”
Levine says it’s important for parents to know the symptoms, which include a persistent fever that’s often high, a rash or change in skin color, swollen lymph nodes, red eyes, and abdominal pain.
New Jersey says it has 23 cases of MIS-C.
All of the 23 kids who have the disease had also tested positive for COVID-19.
Doctors again say early detection and knowing those symptoms are what will help prevent long-term damage.
