A Texas woman has died of complications from the novel coronavirus 102 years after her sibling died of the Spanish Flu. Selma Ryan, who was not yet born when her 5-year-old sister, Esther Hoeffner, passed away in 1918, died Tuesday at an assisted living facility in Austin, reports KXAN. She was96 Ryan’s child, Vicki Spencer, discovered that her mother had a fever on April 3. “Over the next five days I watched through the window as she got sicker and sicker.” Spencer states member of the family gathered outside her mom’s window to celebrate her 96 th birthday on April11 But “I understood she was critically ill,” she tells WOAI. “I knew she would not make it through.”.

Ryan died 3 days later on April14 The death of Ryan’s sis was “a truly considerable and sad part of our household history,” Spencer tells WOAI. An estimated 500 million individuals were infected around the world, a tenth of whom passed away.
