Massachusetts health officials announced another 18 coronavirus deaths on Tuesday, bringing the death toll in the state to 7,665.
Officials also confirmed another 195 cases of the virus, including 55 probable cases. Altogether, officials estimate there are at least 105,885 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts.
The new case data is based on 6,361 molecular tests and 909 antibody tests reported on Tuesday.
Gov. Charlie Baker said on Monday that the rate of infection has declined by more than 90% since the middle of April. The number of hospitals using surge capacity has also decreased by as much as 90%, according to the Department of Public Health.
Since April 15, there’s been an 83% decrease in the number of COVID-19 deaths, according to a three-day average. Hospitalizations since April 15 are also down 71%, according to a three-day average.
More than 700,000 coronavirus tests have been carried out in Massachusetts since the pandemic began. Officials have said they want to increase lab testing capacity to 45,000 a day by the end of July.
Elsewhere across the country, some states that have started to reopen their economies are seeing spikes in cases, according to CNBC. In Massachusetts, there continues to be a decline in the virus since the state began reopening several weeks ago.
The number of cases worldwide has climbed to 8 million as the virus is now spreading in parts of Africa and the Americas, CNBC reports.
Baker announced on Monday that officials are launching 50 pop-up testing sites across the state to provide testing for residents that have recently attended large gatherings or protests in the wake of the killing of George Floyd. The sites will offer free COVID-19 testing Wednesday and Thursday this week.
