On Monday, Georgia’s governor, Brian Kemp, revealed his decision to reopen the state for organisation.
Non-essential businesses, including tattoo parlors, beauty parlor, movie theaters and bowling alleys, will be authorized to reopen from Friday, if they follow social distancing orders.
In a state where African Americans comprise more than32%of the population but represent an approximated 54%of recognized coronavirus deaths, the choice pitted a white Republican guv against mainly black Democratic mayors and critics.
” By trying to press an incorrect opening of the economy, we run the risk of putting more lives in risk,” Stacey Abrams, the Democrat who lost to Kemp in a questionable election in 2018, informed MSNBC.
Citing the close contact needed for grooming services, Abrams said: “There is absolutely nothing about [the measure] that makes good sense.”
Abrams also said the guv “did not seek advice from [the mayors] before making this decision”.
The mayors of Savannah, Augusta and Atlanta confirmed they were not called prior to the guv’s announcement.
Bo Dorough, who is white, is the mayor of Albany, a little city with a cluster of verified Covid-19 cases that has actually ravaged its primarily black community. Dorough said he only found out of the Kemp’s announcement after an aide captured the press conference on TV.
