Detroit Girl, 5, Is First Child To Die From Coronavirus In MI
The Detroit News on Sunday reported that Skylar Herbert died after spending two weeks on a ventilator. The girl had tested positive for the coronavirus in March and developed a rare form of meningitis and brain swelling, according to the article.

Skylar developed meningoencephalitis, a rare complication of the coronavirus, which caused swelling of brain tissue and a lesion on her frontal lobe, after being admitted to the hospital, according to the Detroit News.

After being admitted to Beaumont Royal Oak, doctors treated Skylar and she began to show signs of improvement, the Detroit News reported. Skylar reportedly stopped complaining about head pain and was able to get up to use the bathroom. But then she began relapsing, according to the article.

Michigan has reported more than 31,000 cases of the coronavirus as of Sunday. That number includes over 2,300 deaths attributed to the virus.

Detroit, where Skylar was from, has been hit particularly hard by the virus. The city has reported more than 7,600 cases as of Sunday, with 618 deaths. Both statistics are the highest in the state for a particular community.

The median age of individuals who have died from the coronavirus is 75, according to information provided by the state. The youngest person in Michigan to have died from the virus prior to Skylar’s death was 20, according to state data; the oldest was 107.

Coronavirus cases involving people between the ages of 0-19 make up just 1 percent of Michigan’s cases.
