Some of the city’s biggest parades won’t step off in June, Mayor Bill de Blasio revealed Monday as he announced all parades and other city-permitted events will be canceled for the month of June as the city continues to grapple with the coronavirus crisis.
The mayor has alluded that those events will likely be canceled after he 86’ed all city-permitted events for May.
“This will probably not surprise you,” de Blasio said as he made the announcement. “It’s not a happy announcement, but its one we have to make.”
De Blasio pointed out that among the June events to be axed includes: the Pride Parade, which would have marked its 50th anniversary, the Puerto Rican Day Parade and the Celebrate Israel parade.
Hizzoner noted that the 50th anniversary of the Pride Parade is “a very, very big deal.”
“That march is such an important part of life in this city, but this year in particular was going to be something that was a historical moment,” he said.
The mayor added that “a lot of these events will be postponed” and that “the event organizers, a lot of them, are looking at doing something later in the year and we’re working with them on that.”
“We’re gonna’ miss all three of them in June, but they will be back,” he said.
