\u201cThe human toll of COVID is really the untold story,\u201d said Parkland Hospital’s chief medical officer Dr. Joseph Chang.<\/p>\n

DALLAS \u2014 Dr. Joseph Chang can rattle off numbers and statistics without looking at any notes.<\/p>\n

As of July 21, Parkland Hospital, where Chang is chief medical officer, was treating about 170 COVID-19 patients.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s down from a high of 180 the previous week, but 170 is 55 percent more than a month ago and more than 200 percent higher than two months ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut there are stories behind each of those statistics,\u201d Chang said. \u201cThe human toll of COVID is really the untold story.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the worst cautionary tales is from a young patient who ended up in the ICU, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cA 20-something-year-old girl went to a party with her friends and got COVID,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Before she was symptomatic, she visited her 80-year-old grandparents and they got sick.”<\/p>\n

Chang said all three ended up in the ICU at Parkland, but the granddaughter didn’t know it because she was intubated and unconscious.<\/p>\n

She woke up after ten days and discovered not only had her grandparents been in the ICU with her, “but her grandfather had passed the day before she woke back up,” Chang said.<\/p>\n

Witnessing such grief and sorrow is tough on even the most seasoned medical professionals at Dallas County\u2019s only public hospital.<\/p>\n

And the toll on his staff is Chang’s biggest concern.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fatigue on people\u2019s faces is something that\u2019s hard to quantify,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard for me to describe.\u201d<\/p>\n

He’s started mandating that employees take days off.<\/p>\n

Parkland now has four isolated wards dedicated to treating COVID patients.<\/p>\n

The hospital has seen a leveling off of new patients over the last week, Chang said, but he cautioned that it was not enough data to consider it a trend.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of seeing a huge growth in hospitalizations every day, we now see about the same number coming in that are leaving,\u201d Chang said.<\/p>\n

He attributes it to the mask mandate which went into effect in Texas on July 3.<\/p>\n

Chang remains concerned about the age and race of patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said 75 percent of Parkland\u2019s COVID-19 patients are Hispanic and 60 percent of Parkland\u2019s COVID patients are under age 45.<\/p>\n

Many will have tough battles, and a few could die.<\/p>\n

Chang said about one percent of the patients treated for COVID-19 at Parkland lose their lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s far lower than nationally reported rates,\u201d he said of the hospital’s mortality rate. \u201cBut who\u2019s the one percent? Do you want to be the one percent? I don\u2019t know who the one percent is going to be. You know, no one really does.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chang said he is in a slightly more optimistic place than he was about a month ago, in part because he believes the community at large is taking COVID more seriously.<\/p>\n

But he can’t stop worrying about his colleagues.<\/p>\n

He urges North Texas to thank all medical professionals.<\/p>\n

\u201cNumbers are interesting. We can make them say a lot of things. We can make them look like a lot of things,\u201d he said. \u201cBut behind those numbers are people. And you really don\u2019t want it to be you.\u201d<\/p>\n
