MSNBC<\/a> and CNBC<\/a> founder Tom Rogers<\/a> on Monday expressed fear about presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden<\/a> and his \u201cworrisome inability to focus his message\u201d ahead of the Nov. 3 election against President Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mr. Rogers<\/a>, who is now editor-at-large at Newsweek, wrote a column<\/a> Monday saying Mr. Biden<\/a> must learn how to coherently speak off-script before jumping back into the media spotlight after spending weeks in isolation during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Mr. Rogers<\/a> wrote that Mr. Biden<\/a>\u2019s multiple media appearances shot from the former vice president\u2019s home had \u201cunfortunately shown a worrisome inability to focus his message and articulate clearly and crisply.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBiden<\/a>\u2019s television appearances \u2014 consisting mostly of softball interviews (outside of those dealing with the sexual harassment allegations) that ask for his critique of the president\u2019s leadership during the pandemic \u2014 have been way below an acceptable level for somebody who is leading the charge in perhaps the most important election of our lifetime,\u201d Mr. Rogers<\/a> wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Biden<\/a> is talking with a teleprompter, he commands the situation much better than Trump<\/a>,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut in his living room media appearances so far, he stumbles, fails to complete sentences, searches for words, repeats the same points, has difficulty hitting the right points and does not take points to a deeper level, making his comments seem overly general and superficial.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Biden<\/a>\u2019s speaking does not improve, it will play into the most obvious critiques of his candidacy,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThe Trump<\/a> campaign will go after Biden<\/a> as an establishment politician of the Washington, D.C., \u2018swamp,\u2019 who therefore talks in \u2018political speak\u2019; or it will characterize him as \u2018confused,\u2019 and therefore standing for nothing; or it will paint him as \u2018too old\u2019 to handle the job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Rogers<\/a> declared there it \u201cnothing more urgent\u201d for the campaign to address than to improve Mr. Biden\u2019s unscripted speaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we move toward Election Day, Biden will no longer be able to let Trump<\/a> do the talking,\u201d he wrote. \u201cHe will have to come out and present the case against Trump<\/a> himself, as well as his vision for the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, this is a message to Biden\u2019s campaign staff: Figure out how to fix this issue, and fix it quickly,\u201d he concluded, in part. \u201cTrump<\/a> is no leader, but you can\u2019t lead without communicating effectively, and right now, Joe Biden is not doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n
