Six elderly South Carolina locals– including a couple– passed away of coronavirus a feweeks after attending the very same funeral, according to a report.
All six of the deceased were African Americans and over 60- years-old, both categories at high danger of contracting the illness caused by the unique coronavirus, according to The State.
The coroner of Sumter County, where most of the dead lived, told the paper that all 6 most likely contracted the disease from another participant of the early March funeral.
” They participated in that same funeral service and regrettably died from COVID [19],” Baker stated. “They came back to Sumter, got sick, and I was notified they had passed.
” Sadly, a large quantity of people gathered together at that funeral, somebody there was contaminated with it, spread it, and just didn’t know it,” Baker said.
The Centers for Illness Control and Avoidance on March 16– after the South Carolina funeral service– issued brand-new assistance to funeral directors, urging them to live stream services to adhere to state and federal social distancing restrictions.
South Carolina had more than 3,600 validated cases of the coronavirus and 107 deaths from the illness since Wednesday, the report stated, mentioning the state health department.
About 90 percent of the state’s deaths were people over the age of 61, the paper said.
African Americans, who make up 27 percent of the state’s population, represent 56 percent of the state’s coronavirus-related deaths.
