16 deaths, 103 cases of coronavirus now reported at Yucaipa nursing home

The number of deaths and confirmed novel coronavirus cases at Cedar Mountain Post Acute Rehabilitation in Yucaipa have grown in the weeks since the outbreak was announced.

The facility has had 16 deaths and 103 confirmed cases, including 70 residents and 33 staff members, Lana Culp, San Bernardino County public health spokeswoman, said Friday, April 17. That’s up from 75 confirmed cases and five deaths reported April 6.

The outbreak was first reported March 28 after 12 residents there tested positive and one died from the coronavirus.

The numbers have also risen at Reche Canyon Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Colton, which has had three deaths and 29 confirmed cases, including 15 residents and 14 staff, according to Culp.

On Wednesday, April 15, officials with Plymouth Village retirement community in Redlands said eight workers and six residents tested positive for COVID-19. One of those residents died, they said.

To slow the spread of COVID-19 at nursing facilities, the county announced April 6 it formed a task force comprised of county, state and federal officials, including those from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The county’s Acting Health Officer Dr. Erin Gustafson, the same day the task force was announced, also ordered facilities to stop using staff members who work at other facilities, require staff to wear protective gear to prevent spreading the disease to residents and monitor their temperatures.

The order forbids workers from going into facilities if they have symptoms of any contagious illness.
