More than 5,000 have died of COVID-19 at long-term care facilities in Massachusetts

The COVID-19 death toll at Massachusetts long-term care facilities reached 5,007 on Wednesday.The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported that there were 23,297 cases among residents and workers across 369 facilities in the state.This update comes on the same day that a scathing report was released about the handling of a COVID-19 outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. As of June 24, weekly data from the DPH shows that 91,404 COVID-19 patients have been released from isolation, meaning they are considered to have recovered from the virus.Last week, state health officials said 88,725 patients had recovered from COVID-19. The DPH also reported 48 new COVID-19-related deaths across the state Wednesday, bringing the state’s total to 7,938.In addition, state health officials reported 172 new confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to 107,611.
