Miss Alabama Tiara Pennington announced she and her mother have tested positive for coronavirus.

Pennington made the announcement on the Miss Alabama social media channels, adding that she and her mother began showing COVID symptoms, were tested and are currently in quarantine.

“This virus is extremely contagious because even with my family practicing all the (Centers for Disease Control) recommended guidelines, my mom and I still contracted the virus,” Pennington wrote. “Please say home if you can and, if you can’t please wear a mask and wash your hands. This virus is dangerous, scary, real and unknown.”

Pennington was named Miss Alabama 2019 but her reign was extended through the year after the pageant was canceled due to the coronavirus. Miss Alabama 2021 will take place June 9-12, 2021.
