President Trump defends Redskins name: ‘They name teams out of strength’

President Trump defended the Redskins name on Monday, saying a change would be the result of the team trying to be too “politically correct.”

Mr. Trump tweeted that names like the Redskins and the Cleveland Indians represent “strength.” The Redskins said Friday they would conduct a “thorough review” of their name.

“They name teams out of STRENGTH, not weakness, but now the Washington Redskins & Cleveland Indians, two fabled sports franchises, look like they are going to be changing their names in order to be politically correct,” Mr. Trump tweeted.

The president also took a shot at Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts Democrat, referring to her as an “Indian” for the former Democratic candidate’s claim that she came from American Indian heritage.

“Indians, like Elizabeth Warren, must be very angry right now!” he wrote.
