At least one person is dead and several are wounded after a shooting broke out at a gathering of over 100 people from motorcycle clubs in Waterloo, Iowa, on Saturday.

Police in Waterloo said they responded to a “shots fired report” at about 3:17 a.m Saturday morning at a site where the bikers were gathered.

Waterloo Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald said at a press conference Saturday that police found close to a dozen people who had been injured or shot in what appeared to be “some kind of confrontation” at the location that escalated into a shooting.

Eight people suffered gunshot wounds. One of the wounded has died and another is in critical condition.

Four other people were wounded by debris and glass as they fled the scene.

Fitzgerald added that the gathering was not authorized and investigators are trying to determine who leased the building.

No arrests have been made in relation to the shooting, though three people were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct outside a hospital where three of the victims were being treated, the Associated Press reported.

At least five people were wounded during a shooting at a San Antonio, Texas, flea market on Sunday, according to police.

One of the five is critically injured, The Associated Press reported

Police Chief William McManus said gunfire erupted about 11:30 a.m. at Mission Market during a dispute on the ground, according to the newswire.

“This is the result of some type of argument/ I don’t know if the argument was between gang members or just people who knew each other or didn’t know each other,” McManus said.

The chief said a security guard also opened fire, but it was not known if the guard is among the five people wounded, the AP reported.

The manager of the flea market, Al Ramon, told the newswire the argument did not involve any market employees.

“It was between a vendor and buyer, or two vendors, we don’t know exactly,” Ramon said, according to the AP.

McManus said two weapons were recovered at the scene but the number of gunshots fired was not immediately known, the AP reported.

Fifteen people were wounded in a shooting at a funeral home in Chicago on Tuesday, police said. A person of interest was being interviewed by law enforcement, but there are multiple suspects, according to the police.

Chicago Police First Deputy Superintendent Eric Carter said a black vehicle approached a funeral home in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood where a memorial service was taking place when people in the vehicle began firing.

Funeral attendees fired back and the vehicle drove away as its occupants continued firing. The vehicle crashed about halfway up the block and the occupants got out and fled in multiple directions, Carter said. At least 60 shell casings were recovered from the scene.

The funeral was for Donnie Weathersby, who was shot and killed on July 14, CBS Chicago’s Charlie De Mar reports. Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said Wednesday that Weathersby was killed in a drive-by shooting, leading police to treat his funeral as a potential gang target.

Chicago Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said Weathersby’s shooting was due to a “gang conflict,” and that an investigation found that his murder was “related to a prior shooting and murder incident.”

“A drive-by shooting in Chicago more than likely always leads to some kind of retaliation,” Brown said.

“It’s about revenge, the cycle of revenge, the cycle of retaliation that fuels our shootings and murders.”

He said there are “several hundred gang conflicts” in Chicago on a daily basis. “This is about gangs, guns, and drugs. No doubt.”

Chicago Police just released these gang statistics:

117,000 gang members in Chicago

55 major gangs

747 factions of those 55 gangs

2,500 subsets of those factions@cbschicagohttps://t.co/GfPkl0YC3S @cbschicago

— Audrina Bigos (@AudrinaBigos) July 22, 2020

The fire department told CBS Chicago at least nine of the victims were in serious to critical condition. All the victims are adults, Carter said. It was unclear how many were from the funeral and how many were in the vehicle.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot pleaded for an end to the “senseless violence.”

“To the cowards behind these shootings, we have to ask you to find your humanity,” she said at the press conference. “Picking up a gun, that solves nothing, but causes so much lifelong pain.”

At least one victim was apparently an innocent bystander. Family members at a hospital told CBS Chicago she lives next to the funeral home and was outside for a cigarette break and got caught in the gunfire. She was fighting for her life Tuesday night, her relatives said.

At the funeral home, a woman with blood on her jeans told CBS Chicago she didn’t know whose blood it was. Sources told CBS Chicago the shooting was a planned ambush outside the funeral home.

Sources told CBS Chicago’s Brad Edwards the police were warned there might be a retaliatory attack on the funeral service. Carter said a squad car had been assigned to the funeral because of its size.

City officials said Wednesday that two squad cars were assigned to the funeral and a tactical team was in the area, but no officers were injured during the shooting. Brown said the police response was typical for any funeral believed to have a gang connection.

There is video surveillance of the incident, as well as several witnesses, according to officials. Lightfoot stressed that community members with information are asked to come forward.

“Anyone with information I implore you not to be silent at this moment,” she said at Wednesday’s press conference. “If we are silent, the violence will continue.”

In a series of tweets, Lightfoot called the shooting “horrific” and the shooters “cowardly,” saying, “We cannot give shelter to killers. People know who are responsible.”

“When a person picks up a gun, we suffer as a city. This cannot be who we are,” Lightfoot said.

The shooting came on the heels of President Trump offering a reported 175 federal agents to come to Chicago to help deal with the city’s ongoing gun violence. Sources told CBS Chicago those agents had already arrived in Chicago Tuesday night.

Some law enforcement personnel in military fatigues were spotted at the scene of the shooting, but it wasn’t known whether they were federal agents.

Alderman David Moore called the recent uptick in violence a “national issue” and urged the federal government and private sector to invest in these communities.

“We’re triaging, and we’re triaging as best as we can,” he said.

Audrey McNamara and Brian Dakss contributed to this report.

Chicago Police are investigating a mass shooting that left at least 15 people wounded Tuesday night at a funeral on the city’s South Side. One of the victims remains in “extremely critical condition,” and another is in critical condition, police say.

The violence exploded outside a funeral home in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, where mourners had gathered for a large funeral. Investigators say they found roughly 60 shell casings at the scene.

Around 6:30 p.m. local time, a black Chevrolet Malibu sped down West 79th St., spraying bullets at people gathered on the block where Rhodes Funeral Services is located, according to police.

“At that time, the attendees of the funeral exchanged gunfire with the black vehicle,” First Deputy Superintendent Eric Carter of the Chicago Police Department said a few hours after the shooting.

After driving past the funeral home, the vehicle made a right turn onto Carpenter St. — going the wrong way on a narrow one-way street. People in the vehicle continued to fire at funeral attendees, Carter said, before crashing halfway down the block.

“The occupants of the vehicle then exited in multiple directions and fled,” he said.

Carter added that “a person of interest” was being interviewed by detectives about the shooting. As of Wednesday morning, that person’s status was unchanged.

The funeral was being held for a man who had been shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in the Englewood neighborhood, police said in an update Wednesday morning.

“It’s an ongoing gang conflict problem,” Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said Wednesday. He noted that the car used in the attack had been reported stolen.

The Chicago Sun-Times spoke to a resident of the block who said she went outside after hearing gunfire.

“We went out in the street and all we saw was bodies just laying everywhere. They were shot up everywhere,” Arnita Geder said, according to the newspaper. “We thought it was a war out here.”

A police car had been assigned to the funeral as a precaution, Carter said. On Wednesday morning, Police Superintendent David Brown said police had actually sent two squad cars to the funeral, along with a tactical team that was nearby.

Describing the scope of Chicago’s gang violence problem, Brown said, “There are over 117,000 gang members in the city of Chicago.” Repeating the figure, he said that they were “broken into 55 major gangs,” along with 747 factions and 2,500 subsets.

Every day, Brown said, several hundred conflicts break out between gang members in Chicago.

When Carter was asked Tuesday night whether more could have been done to prevent the violence, he replied, “That’s being looked at.”

Police are asking anyone with video recordings or information about the attack to contact investigators.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot condemned what she called a “horrific mass shooting,” and echoed the request for help from the local community.

“When a person picks up a gun, we suffer as a city,” Lightfoot said. “This cannot be who we are.”

Chicago is one of several U.S. cities whose mayors are locked in a dispute with the Trump administration over the deployment of federal law enforcement agents. The Justice Department says the plan is meant to reduce violent crime. But critics call it a political machination by a president who wants to bolster his “law and order” credentials ahead of the November election.

On Monday, Lightfoot sent a letter to President Trump asking him not to send federal agents to her city — “instead imploring him to help the city address violent crime by cracking down on the proliferation of illegal guns,” as member station WBEZ reports.

CHICAGO (CBS) — At least 15 people were wounded Tuesday evening in a mass shooting directed at people attending a funeral in the Auburn Gresham community.

There were 10 female victims and five male victims, according to an update from Chicago police early Wednesday morning. The victims range in age from 21 to 65 years old. Police said at least six people are in serious condition Wednesday morning.

It began as a solemn ceremony for a victim of gun violence, and ended up becoming a gruesome scene of gun violence unto itself.

Chicago Police First Deputy Supt. Eric Carter said a black vehicle was heading west on 79th Street at 6:30 p.m., when people inside began firing at attendees of a funeral. The funeral was taking place at the Rhodes Funeral Services funeral home at 1018 W. 79th St.

Chicago police said the vehicle involved was stolen. Police said there is video surveillance of the shooting incident, but the video is not graphic enough to identify the offenders.

On Wednesday morning, police said they believe there are three suspects.

The attendees of the funeral began firing back at the vehicle, which turned north on Carpenter Street and kept firing at people from the funeral before crashing into a parked car midway down the block.

The occupants got out and fled in multiple directions, Carter said.

One person of interest was being interviewed Tuesday night.

Carter said the victims were taken to five hospitals. At least 60 shell casings were located.

The Fire Department said at least nine people were transported by ambulances from the scene. The Fire Department said Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and the University of Chicago Medical Center received most of the victims.

Victims were also taken, or found their way to, St. Bernard Hospital, OSF Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Evergreen Park, and Stroger Hospital of Cook County.

The Fire Department said two additional victims were found near 63rd street and were in the process of self-transporting, for a total of 11 transports by their ambulances.

One woman was shot multiple times, and the patients they transported ranged from serious to critical condition at the time they were taken to the hospital, the Fire Department said.

The victims were all adults and no children were shot, police said.

“Right now, it’s not known if anyone was not a part of the funeral or a part of the vehicle,” Carter said. “Of the 14 victims, it’s unknown right now if there were any bystanders, so to speak.”

But CBS 2’s Jermont Terry later learned one victim was an innocent bystander. At Advocate Christ, the woman’s family said she lives next to the funeral home and was outside for a cigarette break when she was caught in the gunfire.

The woman was fighting for her life Tuesday night, her family said.]

Sources said there was some kind of planned ambush outside the funeral home.

The funeral was for Donnie Weathersby, 31, who was shot and killed on the afternoon of last Tuesday, July 14, at 74th Street and Stewart Avenue in Englewood. Weathersby was shot in the torso and head, CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar reported.

Sources told CBS 2’s Brad Edwards that police were forewarned there could be a retaliatory strike at the funeral service. Carter said a squad car was assigned to the funeral.

“That was assigned by the district commander as a precaution because the size of the funeral,” Carter said.

De Mar spoke with people at the scene who said they were at Weathersby’s funeral service when the shots started.

“I saw body after body on the ground,” said witness Arnita Jeder. “It’s a war out here.”

Jeder says she heard the shots and then saw the bodies spilling from Rhodes Funeral Services.

“Why are they shooting like this? This is ridiculous,” Jeder said. “Enough is enough.”

Of the victims, witness Kenneth Hughes said, “There was more woman than men.”

Family rushed to the funeral home after learning loved ones were shot.

“Someone we know was at a service. Someone called us and told us that they were hurt,” one victim’s family member said.

De Mar also spoke to a woman who had blood on her jeans and who did not know whose blood it was.

“There was one guy – he was wounded, stretched out,” Hughes added. “He look deceased.”

De Mar also talked with Tamar Manasseh, the founder of the group Mothers Against Senseless Killing. She said as recently as Tuesday morning, she spoke with Chicago Police – with whom she has a direct line – about the potential for violence at the funeral.

Manasseh said she asked for a special police detail at the funeral.

She said she was talking about the potential for violence for several days on her own social media, and said not enough was done to prevent it.

Following the shooting, some victims just walked into hospitals with gunshot wounds, and officers even took some victims to hospitals, sources told CBS 2’s Terry.

Some people were treated in front of the nearby Cookie’s Cocktail Lounge at 1024 W. 79th St.

The shooting happened in the Gresham (6th) Police District. Officers from the Englewood (7th) and Grand Crossing (4th) districts, sources told Edwards.

The mass shooting also came on the heels of President Donald Trump offering a reported 175 federal agents to come in and help deal with violence in Chicago. Sources told CBS 2’s Brad Edwards those agents had already arrived in Chicago Tuesday night.

Some law enforcement personnel in military fatigues were spotted at the scene of the shooting, but it was not clear whether they were federal agents.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued a series of tweets on the shooting Tuesday night.

“While families were mourning at a funeral in Auburn Gresham, cowardly gunmen opened fire, wounding 14 in a horrific mass shooting. @Chicago_Police are canvassing for evidence and street outreach teams have been deployed to provide trauma and victim support services for residents,” the mayor wrote. “Far too many have suffered. Far too many have attended funerals and tried to start the process of healing entire communities following another senseless tragedy. When a person picks up a gun, we suffer as a city. This cannot be who we are.”

As Chicago Police Supt. David Brown addressed the public Wednesday morning, he said there are 117,000 gang members in Chicago and there are 55 major gangs in the city. Brown said CPD is seeking witnesses of this shooting.

“This is about gangs, guns and drugs,” Brown said.

Lightfoot echoed Brown’s request and urged the public to provide information on the shooter. She said tips can be made anonymously.

“Anyone with information, I implore you not to be silent in this moment,” Lightfoot.

Crime statistics indicated there were 13 murders last month in the area, compared with three in June 2019. There were five murders in the area just last week.

In the Gresham District, there have been 132 shootings so far this year before Tuesday night, compared with 100 in the same period last year, for an increase of 32 percent.

CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar, Jermont Terry, and Brad Edwards contributed to this report.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A shooting in a popular Minneapolis nightlife area early Sunday left one man dead and 11 people wounded in a chaotic scene that sent people ducking into restaurants and other businesses for cover.

The shooting broke out shortly after midnight in the city’s trendy Uptown neighborhood, a nightlife hub with bars, restaurants and retail including Apple and Fjallraven stores.

Police first said 10 people had been shot with “various severity levels of injuries,” but revised their total upward in a tweet posted just after 3 a.m. The man died at the hospital, not at the scene, they said. None of the other injuries were considered life-threatening.

Police said they believe there was more than one shooter, described only as “individuals on foot.” No one was in custody, and police have not said what may have prompted the shooting. All of the injured were adults.

In video posted to Facebook that showed the immediate aftermath, screams could be heard as small crowds of people gathered, with some crouched over people lying on the pavement before police officers on bicycles showed up to attend to them.

Fred Hwang, a manager at Hoban Korean BBQ, said he was working the front door when he heard shots from the sidewalk a couple of storefronts down. Hwang described hearing “a lot of shots” and said it appeared to be groups of people shooting at each other.

“People were trying to rush inside the restaurant for safety,” he said. “It was a very scary experience. … We have bullet holes inside our restaurant like on the walls and stuff. All of our front glass was broken and shattered. Then, just like people being in here panicking and running around, breaking this or that, it was very chaotic.”

Across the street from where the shooting began, in a storefront shared by the Uptown Theater and a shoe store, a police officer later Sunday surveyed a shattered window and door and a bullet hole could be seen in the storefront.

The Uptown area is about 3 miles (5 kilometers) west of the Minneapolis commercial area and neighborhood hit by rioting in the wake of George Floyd’s May 25 death after being arrested by Minneapolis police. Some of the violence from that period reached as far as Uptown, and many storefronts are still protected by plywood.

Floyd’s death has sparked a move to overhaul the Minneapolis Police Department, with a majority of City Council members pledging support for dismantling a department that many community activists have called brutal and racist. That’s prompted pushback from opponents who question how residents will be protected from violent crime. Even the most aggressive proponents for change have acknowledged it’s many months away and they’re not sure what it will look like.

Hwang was critical of the police response time, estimating it took officers more than 30 minutes to arrive. However, police spokesman John Elder told The Associated Press that police converged on the area within three minutes of a 12:38 a.m. call being put out by officers stating that they had heard shots in the area.

“Something needs to be done to protect us,” Hwang said. “Normally the bars on Saturday night, we all have off-duty police officers as extra security parked in front of our businesses. But no one has that right now because police are a liability for us.”

Police responded to at least two other shootings in south Minneapolis in the hour before the Uptown violence erupted. The Star Tribune reported that one was a man who may have shot himself near the site where Floyd died. Another was a nonfatal double shooting. Elder told the newspaper that angry crowds at both scenes impeded officers.

A 19-year-old man was killed and another person was in critical condition after a pre-dawn shooting in Seattle’s protest zone, authorities said on Saturday.

The shooting happened at about 3am in the area near downtown known as the Chaz, short for “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone”, police said in a statement on Twitter.

Seattle’s police department claimed in a press release on Saturday morning that when officers responded to reports of gunshots inside the protest zone, they “were met by a violent crowd that prevented officers safe access to the victims”.

Police were later informed that the protesters’ own medics transported the two gunshot wound victims to a hospital, the department said.

Two males with gunshot wounds arrived in a private vehicle at Harborview medical center at about 3am, said a hospital spokeswoman, Susan Gregg. The 19-year-old man died and the other person was in critical condition in intensive care.

Sgt Lauren Truscott of Seattle police told the Seattle Times she did not know if police had taken anyone into custody and had no immediate details about how the shooting unfolded.

Investigators were reviewing public-source video and body-camera video for clues and authorities planned to disclose more information about the shooting later, Truscott said.

Protesters have cordoned off several blocks near a police station in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, in the wake of demonstrations against police violence since the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis several weeks ago.

Police have largely retreated from the zone after clashes with protesters ended with people throwing things at police and police teargassing people and using other crowd control munitions.

City officials have said they are still communicating with protest leaders, who had pledged to keep the peace in the zone.

The situation has drawn the continued ire of Donald Trump. His tweets about possibly sending in the military have been met with condemnation from the Seattle mayor, Jenny Durkan, and the Washington governor, Jay Inslee, both Democrats.

Six people have been hurt in a Daytona, Florida shooting as thousands of people across the country defied social distancing rules, including revelers at a wild Memorial Day pool party in Missouri named ‘Zero Ducks Given’.

Two people were shot and four were hit by shrapnel in the Florida incident around 7.30pm Saturday on South Ocean Avenue near Breakers Oceanfront Park.

Gunfire erupted along the beachside road where more than 200 people were seen partying and dancing as lockdowns eased up.

Several people were wounded and taken to the hospital but the injuries are not life-threatening, authorities said. Police said no suspects were arrested and the victims were not cooperating with the investigation.

Authorities had been expecting in influx after last week Governor Ron DeSantis changed lockdown measures from 25 percent to 50 percent capacity. In the Tampa area along Florida’s Gulf Coast, the crowds were so big that authorities took the extraordinary step of closing parking lots because they were full.

‘Disney is closed, Universal is closed. Everything is closed so where did everybody come with the first warm day with 50% opening? Everybody came to the beach,’ Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said at a Sunday news conference, referring to crowds in the Daytona Beach area.

Cocoa Beach, Florida, is packed with Memorial Day beachgoers on Saturday. The beaches are open for business again during the coronavirus epidemic

Cops are looking for one man suspected of encouraging a crowd to gather due to him tossing money out of a car. A video shows approximately 200 people surrounding a vehicle parked on State A1A road outside Burger King.

Chitwood vowed to identify and charge the man but did not say what he would be charged for.

Police said several incidents occurred in the area this weekend, but no one has been arrested.

‘I know people were scared and I know people were upset about the numbers of crowds there,’ Daytona Police Chief Craig Capri said. ‘We don’t take this lightly especially with the crowds gathering together right now as we got the coronavirus still going around and people not practicing social distancing. But I’m not the social distancing police — that’s not my job.’

Volusia County Beach safety director Ray Manchester said along a 47-mile stretch of beach, 300 people rescued by lifeguards Saturday in the Gulf Coast. He said about the beach: ‘Every part of it was full’.

The holiday weekend activity apparently put ‘terror’ into local residents and visitors to the area. Volusia Councilwoman Billie Wheeler told the Orlando Sentinel that a hotel owner reported 26 guests checking out Sunday due to the events of Saturday.

A similar scene continued into the night at Shady Gators on Saturday as crowds gathered to watch live bands on stage

Hundreds of revelers have been spotted partying at Lake of the Ozarks on Memorial Day weekend, with a complete disregard for social distancing guidelines amid the coronavirus pandemic.

People packed out bars and restaurants and videos shared to social media on Saturday showed crammed pools at  the likes of Shady Gators and Backwater Jack’s on Osage Beach after Missouri Governor Mike Parson partially lifted coronavirus lockdowns earlier this month.

In Missouri there were almost 12,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 681 related deaths on Sunday. In Osage county there were five cases.

Missouri appeared to be enjoying the first phase of Parsons’ reopening plan which states that gyms and hotel swimming pools can open ‘if they adhere to strict social distancing and sanitation protocols.’

For smaller locations (less than 10,000 square feet), retail businesses must maintain 25 percent or less of the authorized occupancy. For larger locations (10,000 square feet or greater), they must maintain 10 percent or less of the authorized occupancy. However these restrictions do not apply to restaurants or hotels.

Health experts have not indicated that coronavirus can be spread in water. However some merry pool-goers were filmed holding hands and kissing.

Backwater Jacks event organizers Zero Ducks Given advertised that they had worked with government officials to kick off pool season safely. They stated on Facebook there would be reduced capacity but did not say what their limit was for the gathering which started at 11am.

Signage at Shady Gators reminded attendees to stay at least six feet apart but it was blatantly ignored by many.

Lake of the Ozarks reportedly had one of its busiest Memorial Day weekends this year. Surrounding venues were booked out too. Right, is a flyer for the Backwater Jack’s event

Video showed people inches away from one another at swim-up bars and bathing suit-clad drinkers hugging and dancing closely.

‘No covid concerns at the lake of the ozarks,’ Scott Pasmore, an KTVK-3TV Arizona anchor tweeted.

It wasn’t just the pool area that appeared very overcrowded, the bar area overlooking it was filled with revelers too.

One attendee said they did a good job.

‘When we walked up my first words were “oh my gosh” it was intense for sure!! Social distancing was nonexistent. However everyone was enjoying themselves. It was a very carefree environment but security was heavy!’ Jodi Akins told CNN. ‘They checked all of our temps and had thousands of little bottles of hand sanitizer!! They did a good job with what they had to work with!’

Despite the advised reduced capacity, the area in general was predicted to have one of its busiest weekends for the holiday this year.

The venue claimed it would have temperature checks at the gate. The restaurant also said hand sanitizing stations would be on the grounds

Some people said the Backwater Jack’s venue stuck to their advertised promise while others claimed they didn’t

Attendees appeared without a care in the world at packed out summer events on Saturday and Sunday in Missouri

They didn’t wear any protective face masks as they kicked off the busy pool party season in Lake of the Ozarks on Saturday

‘It’s supposed to be one of the biggest Memorial Day weekends we’ve seen at the lake here in years,’ Bill Morgan, manager of Robins Resort in Lake of the Ozarks, told KTVI.

A local resident who filmed the action with his drone appeared to confirm the prediction was correct.

‘It definitely seems like more (traffic) than last year,’ Adam Kirk said. ‘It seems like everyone is having the same idea, to come to the lake to enjoy summer, because you can social distance at the same time.’

St. Louis County plans on reopening pools in early June but St Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson said what she saw in social media videos from the event was ‘deeply disturbing’.

‘It’s irresponsible and dangerous to engage in such high risk behavior just to have some fun over the extended holiday weekend,’ she said in a statement, KMOV reports.

‘Now, these folks will be going home to St. Louis and counties across Missouri and the Midwest, raising concerns about the potential of more positive cases, hospitalizations, and tragically, deaths. Deeply disturbing.’

The US is on track to surpass 100,000 coronavirus deaths in the next few days, while Europe has seen over 169,000 dead, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Worldwide, more than 5.4 million people have been infected and nearly 345,000 have died.

In Missouri there were almost 12,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 681 related deaths on Sunday. In Osage county there were five cases

But in the neighboring state of Illinois there were more than 105,000 cases and 4,715 deaths

Sheriff’s deputies and beach patrols tried to make sure people kept their distance from others as they soaked up the rays on the sand and at parks and other recreation sites around the country.

On Georgia’s Tybee Island, the beach was filled with families, bicyclists, beach chairs, games, swimmers and more. On a main drag, people lined the sidewalk at Wet Willie’s, a chain bar that sells frozen cocktails. Most stood close together — not nearly 6 feet (2 meters) apart — and none wore masks.

But at a nearby grocery store, staff members handed customers gloves and a number to keep track of how many people were inside at a time. Shoppers had their own masks.

Officials in California said most people were covering their faces and keep their distance even as they ventured to beaches and parks. Many Southern California beaches were open only for swimming, running and other activities.

At New York’s Orchard Beach in the Bronx, kids played with toys, and people sat in folding chairs. Some wore winter coats on a cool and breezy day, and many wore masks and sat apart from others.

‘Good to be outside. Fresh air. Just good to enjoy the outdoors,’ said Danovan Clacken, whose face was covered.

On the Sunday talk shows, Dr. Deborah Birx, coordinator of the White House coronavirus task force, said she was ‘very concerned’ about scenes of people crowding together over the weekend.

‘We really want to be clear all the time that social distancing is absolutely critical. And if you can’t social distance and you´re outside, you must wear a mask,’ she said on ABC’s This Week.
