A House Democrat who’s a frequent critic of the Trump administration submitted a resolution Tuesday calling for the impeachment of Attorney General William Barr.

House Resolution 1032, filed by U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee, accuses the nation’s top law enforcement officer of using his job to pursue political goals.

“Today, I introduced #HRes1032, which would authorize an impeachment inquiry into Attorney General Barr,” Cohen wrote on Twitter. “He has politicized the DOJ, undermined the rule of law, abused his power, obstructed justice & violated the first amendment. He is not fit to be Attorney General.”

HOW BILL BARR THREATENS THE ‘DEEP STATE,’ NOT THE RULE OF LAW: IAN PRIOR

Cohen specifically cited Barr’s role in Justice Department decision to change sentencing recommendations for former Trump adviser Roger Stone — who was convicted on charges of obstruction, lying to Congress and witness tampering – and Barr’s role in the removal of protesters from Lafayette Square near the White House on June 1, prior to a Trump photo op outside St. John’s Episcopal Church.

The congressman’s action came five months after House Democrats’ efforts to impeach President Trump failed when the Senate voted Feb. 5 to clear the president of two counts of wrongdoing.

Attorney General William Barr, left, is the target of an impeachment resolution by U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn.

Attorney General William Barr, left, is the target of an impeachment resolution by U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn.

It also came just days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed any effort to impeach Barr as being ill-advised.

“At this point, let’s solve our problems by going to the polls and voting on Election Day,” Pelosi said during a Washington Post Live interview.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., similarly called a Barr impeachment effort a “waste of time,” Politico reported, although Nadler also said last week that his committee “may very well” seek to remove Barr.

Last week, Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec hit back at any talk of impeaching Barr, who has led the department since February 2019 after previously serving in the post from November 1991 to January 1993 under former President George H.W. Bush.

Kupec, during an appearance on “Fox & Friends,” dismissed such efforts as “a political thing.”

“If people have a problem with Bill Barr coming back to the Department of Justice to restore one system of justice, not a two-tiered system, I think that says a lot more about the critics than it does about the attorney general,” Kupec said. “Because that is what he has done again and again.

“He approaches all cases with an open mind. He judges them according to the facts and the law without regard to political consideration,” Kupec continued. “This is what he promised to at his confirmation, this is what he has done throughout his tenure as attorney general, and that is what he will continue to do until his last day as AG.”

Cohen, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, began circulating his resolution on Capitol Hill last week, hoping to attract support from fellow House members, Politico reported.

At least two other House Democrats have publicly advocated for impeaching Barr, according to Politico. They are U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Bill Pascrell of New Jersey.

House Democrats previously impeached Trump last December on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in connection with a July 2019 phone call with the president of Ukraine.

Cohen has a reputation for being something of a showman in the House.

In May 2019, Cohen ate from a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken during a Capitol Hill hearing on the Mueller report, to suggest that Barr was “a chicken” for opting not to appear before the House judiciary panel.

Mason James Lira is believed to have killed a homeless man.

The Paso Robles, California, Police Department said they shot and killed the gunman who has been on the run since early Wednesday after he allegedly targeted a precinct and injured a deputy. He is also believed to be responsible for the murder of a transient man in the area.

Three officers were wounded in a shootout as well, police said. Their conditions are not known.

The suspect was found with multiple guns.

Earlier in the afternoon, Paso Robles police and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said shots had been fired near Ramada Drive and Volpi Ysabel Road and ordered individuals in the area to shelter in place. The sheriff’s office said a perimeter had been set up around the alleged suspect.

An Arroyo Grande Police Officer, also a member of the San Luis Obispo Regional SWAT Team, was shot in that earlier incident between authorities and the apparent suspect, according to the city of Arroyo Grande. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Local law enforcement, the California Highway Patrol and the FBI have been searching for the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Mason James Lira, since they believe he opened fire on law enforcement at about 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Nicholas Dreyfus, a 28-year old deputy with the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the early morning shooting and was shot in the face, officials said. His prognosis is good, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities believe Lira is a transient from the Monterey, California, area.

Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Authorities also believe Lira is connected to a Wednesday morning homicide near the Paso Robles Amtrak Station.

The sheriff’s office said the body of a man who was shot in the head at close range was found near the station Wednesday morning. The victim killed was likely a transient who was camping out near the train tracks, authorities said.

This story is developing. Please check back for updates.

On Friday night, photojournalist Linda Tirado was shot in the eye by a rubber bullet while covering an anti-police brutality protest in Minneapolis — one of more than two dozen incidents of journalists experiencing violence while covering the recent demonstrations.

Tirado says she’s permanently blind in her left eye. (She is thankful she uses her right eye to take photos, so the injury is not career-ending.)

an update: I am permanently blind in my left eye, and the docs absolutely refuse to let me go back to work for they say six weeks. I’m definitely not allowed to be near smoke or gas.

Usually if I had to stay home I’d spend a lot of time amplifying folk but reading hurts today

— Linda Tirado (@KillerMartinis) May 30, 2020

The Minneapolis Police Department and Mayor Jacob Frey’s office didn’t respond to requests for comment about Tirado’s injury.

Across the country journalists have been targeted by police, facing arrest, detention and violence, including being pepper sprayed and shot by rubber bullets. Journalists were targeted by police in the Ferguson protests in 2015 and during the civil rights era, and that pattern of violence and arrests continued into this weekend’s protests.

“Targeted attacks on journalists, media crews, and news organizations covering the demonstrations show a complete disregard for their critical role in documenting issues of public interest and are an unacceptable attempt to intimidate them,” said Carlos Martínez de la Serna, program director at the nonprofit advocacy group Committee to Protect Journalists, in a statement Saturday. “Authorities in cities across the U.S. need to instruct police not to target journalists and ensure they can report safely on the protests without fear of injury or retaliation.”

Police hit reporters with tear gas and pepper spray

LA Times reporter Molly Hennessy-Fiske reported that Minnesota State Patrol troopers fired tear gas at reporters and camera crews in Minneapolis Saturday.

On Rodeo Drive in Santa Monica, California, an ABC7 reporter and his crew were hit with tear gas Saturday.

Several Detroit Free Press reporters were pepper sprayed by Detroit police Saturday, including one who held up a press badge while police targeted him.

Police threatened and arrested journalists

On Friday morning, CNN reporter Omar Jimenez and his crew were arrested live on the air in Minneapolis. Vox’s Matthew Yglesias has more detailed coverage here.

HuffPost reporter Christopher Mathias, who photos show with his press badge clearly visible to officers, was arrested while covering protests in Brooklyn Saturday evening. He was later released and in good condition, according to several of his HuffPost colleagues.

Minneapolis-based reporter Madeleine Baran tweeted that a Minneapolis police officer pointed a weapon at her and did not lower it when she identified herself as a reporter. The incident prompted her to leave and stop reporting on the protest.

Police weren’t the only people targeting journalists this weekend

But it was unfortunately not just police targeting journalists over the weekend. Fox News reporter Leland Vittert and his crew were harassed, assaulted, and chased off the scene near the White House in Washington, DC, Friday. Their camera was broken in the process.

CBS5 reporter Briana Whitney was grabbed by a man on live television while reporting on protests outside Phoenix police department headquarters.

THIS IS NOT OKAY.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel continued her criticism of President Trump on Friday, claiming he had “risked the health, safety and welfare” of all Michiganders by removing his mask during a tour of a Ford Motor Co. factory in the state Tuesday.

“I will not remain silent and just twiddle my thumbs as I see him do that,” Nessel told NPR’s “All Things Considered.”

Nessel said she believes Trump has been at odds with the state’s top three leaders recently, in part because they’re all women.

“I guess if any one of us were doing Secretary [of State Mike] Pompeo’s dishes, he might be fine with us. But since we’re not and we’re actually running the state of Michigan, he seems to have a real issue,” she told NPR.

TRUMP BLASTS MICHIGAN AG FOR ‘VICIOUSLY THREATENING’ FORD FOR LETTIGN HIM TOUR PLANT WITHOUT MASK

Trump called Nessel the “Wacky Do Nothing Attorney General of Michigan,” on Twitter on Thursday after his Ford plant tour and claimed she “viciously attacked” the company after his visit. Nessel told CNN the state would have a “very serious conversation” with Ford for allowing the president to take off his mask.

Nessel also shot back on Twitter, saying it seemed like “you have a problem with all 3 women who run MI-as well as your ability to tell the truth.”

In recent weeks, Trump has also been feuding with Michigan’s Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

Whitmer, a Democrat, first drew Trump’s ire in late March, when he posted that she was in “way in over her head, she doesn’t have a clue” about the amount of federal supplies the state needed to deal with the coronavirus.

“I’ve asked repeatedly and respectfully for help,” Whitmer answered back at the time. “We need it. No more political attacks, just PPEs, ventilators, N95 masks, test kits. You said you stand with Michigan — prove it.”

Trump more recently sided with protesters calling for Whitmer to reopen the state amid Michigan’s stay-at-home order and last week he threatened to cut the state’s federal funding if the Michigan expands voting by mail for the November election. Whitmer told CBS News the move was a “ridiculous,” “scary” distraction.

On Wednesday, Trump tweeted he “will ask to hold up funding to Michigan if they want to go down this Voter Fraud path!”

Trump also called Benson a “rogue Secretary of State” Wednesday, claiming she “illegally” and “without authorization” sent out absentee ballots to all registered voters. Voters in Michigan are actually sent ballot applications.

“Every Michigan registered voter has a right to vote by mail,” Benson tweeted at Trump. “I have the authority & responsibility to make sure that they know how to exercise this right – just like my GOP colleagues are doing in GA, IA, NE and WV.”

Nessel reitered her specualtion about the president’s motives to NBC News.

“Michigan is the only state with women who hold our three executive offices and just in the last — we’re the only state where the president has individually gone after each one of us,” she said, according to NBC. “You do the math.”

Former federal prosecutor Andy McCarthy told “The Next Revolution” Sunday that the FBI feared former national security adviser Gen. Michael Flynn would uncover illegitimacies surrounding the origins of the Russia probe, and that they “needed to remove him if they wanted to continue this particular investigation.”

“I think the best way to look at this is what the FBI and the Obama Administration wanted to do here was really audacious if you think about it in terms of the idea of trying to continue an investigation after a new president has come into power and is in a position to shut down the investigation — when the president ultimately is the target of the investigation,” McCarthy explained.

“In terms of Flynn, it’s better to look at him as… something that was obstructing the bureau, rather than their objective in the investigation.”

— Andy McCarthy, ‘The Next Revolution’

“I think what happened specifically with General Flynn is that while the president brought in a lot of people into his original administration who had various types of expertise, he was kind of short on people with a lot of national security and foreign relations background. General Flynn was an exception,” he continued.

The former national security adviser was a “savvy intelligence operator,” who posed a threat to the FBI’s handling of the investigation focussed on Russian interference in the 2016 election, explained McCarthy.

DOJ DROPS CASE AGAINST MICHAEL FLYNN, IN WAKE OF INTERNAL MEMO RELEASE

“He had been the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, he knew how the FBI worked in conjunction with the intelligence community and it is inconceivable to me, if you wanted to continue an investigation of the president during the president’s administration, that they could have pulled that off with a sophisticated intelligence actor being the national security advisor and being loyal to the president,” McCarthy, a Fox News contributor explained.

The House Intelligence Committee on Thursday released dozens of transcripts of interviews from its Russia probe in 2017 and 2018 following demands by Republicans to make the records public — after the content was cleared for release by the intelligence community.

The transcripts included testimony from many officials who said they were unaware of evidence showing coordination between the Trump campaign team and the Russians.

HANNITY BLASTS OBAMA, SCHIFF OVER RUSSIA PROBE AND FLYNN CASE: ‘THIS CAN’T HAPPEN IN AMERICA’

“He [Flynn] would necessarily have found out that they had investigated the Trump campaign, he would’ve found out for example that they were in the FISA court conducting surveillance on Trump campaign advisors,” McCarthy added, “and he would’ve been able to figure out pretty easily that President Trump was the ultimate quarry that they had in connection with the investigation.”

The Justice Department has moved to drop its case against Flynn last week after a series of bombshell documents were released exposing an alleged set-up in which top bureau officials indicated that their “goal” was to “to get him [Flynn] to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired.”

READ THE BOMBSHELL FBI DOCUMENTS

“I think in terms of Flynn, it’s better to look at him as kind of something that was obstructing the bureau rather than their objective in the investigation,” McCarthy said. “They needed to remove him if they wanted to continue this particular investigation.”

Former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein put Trump campaign volunteer Cater Page under special counsel investigation after a year in which allegations against him in a Democratic Party-financed dossier had fallen apart.

The Justice Department on Wednesday released a less-censored “scoping memo” Mr. Rosenstein sent to Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Aug. 2, 2017. The memo authorized Mr. Mueller to target Mr. Page, retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, campaign volunteer George Papadopoulos and former campaign manager Paul Manafort.

At the time, there was no evidence that any of the four conspired with Russia to interfere in the 2016 election — outside of allegations in the dossier compiled by ex-British spy Christopher Steele. No evidence ever materialized and Mr. Mueller closed his probe without charging any Trump associate with conspiracy

The less-censored memo (compared to a version filed in court in 2018) revealed that Mr. Rosenstein targeted Mr. Page with this sentence: “Allegations that Carter Page committed a crime or crimes by colluding with Russian government officials with respect to the Russian government’s efforts to interfere with the 2016 election for President of the United States, in violation of United States law.”

The FBI first singled out Mr. Page for a counter-intelligence probe in August 2016.

In the year leading up to Mr. Rosenstein’s scoping memo, several events damaged the FBI’s case.

In October, the FBI won a judge’s approval to start electronic and physical surveillance on Mr. Page that would last until the following September. Four warrant applications were based on dossier allegations that Mr. Page conspired with Russians in Moscow and worked with Mr. Manafort as a liaison to the Kremlin. The Department of Justice inspector general said Mr. Steele’s claims were essential to obtaining the warrants.

But in January, the FBI interviewed Mr. Steele’s main Russian source who repudiated the dossier, saying he was just repeating gossip to the ex-spy.

What’s more, intelligence services told the FBI in early 2017 that the claims about Mr. Page were likely Russian intelligence disinformation. The Kremlin learned of Mr. Steele’ Democratic Party assignment in July 2016, making him a ready candidate for the Russian statecraft of feeding disinformation to try to destabilize the West. In this case, the target was candidate, and now president, Trump.

In 2016, then-FBI agent Peter Strzok and other agents were reading Mr. Steele’s allegation of a vast conspiracy between Trump campaign and Russia that never occurred.

Mr. Rosenstein also targeted Mr. Manafort and Papadopoulos with the allegations they colluded with Russia in the election. This did not prove true either.

Mr. Manafort is in federal prison after being convicted of income tax fraud. Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about the timing of his meeting with a London-based professor who learned in Moscow that the Russians had dirt on Hillary Clinton.

The allegations against Flynn included that he committed a crime by talking to Russian government officials during the presidential transition.

This is an apparent reference to the 1799 Logan Act. Mr. Strzok interviewed Flynn on Jan. 24, 2107 at the White House with a goal of getting him to admit he violated the act. As a private citizen, so the legal theory goes, he was prohibited from discussing Obama foreign policy with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Flynn’s backers considered the ploy a joke since no one has ever been convicted of a Logan Act violation and no one prosecuted for over a century. The Justice Department concluded that as a transition official he did not violated the law.

Flynn, briefly Mr. Trump’s national security adviser, pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about the phone call. He has since repudiated the plea and is seeking to have his case dismissed on grounds the FBI entrapped and framed him.

After Justice released the memo via Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican, the senator tweeted, “The legal foundation for Mueller’s appointment is crumbling.”

Changes in lifestyle and diet may improve a person’s memory, depending on their genes.

Everyone ages, but no two people will age in the same way. Some people will remain cognitively alert as they age, while others will display dramatic memory loss.

Experts do not know precisely why this occurs, but new research suggests it relates to a genetic variation in so-called nutrient-sensing pathways. These are molecular interactions that depend on the levels of nutrients people consume.

The study, published in Communications Biology, indicates that lifestyle changes based on an individual’s genetic makeup could help to delay memory loss.

The study focused on neural stem cells (NSCs). These are a group of cells located in the hippocampus, which is a center for memory in the brain. These cells divide continually to make more cells, and maintaining them is essential for memory.

Nutrient sensing pathways respond to lifestyle factors, such as diet and exercise, and help to promote changes in cell behavior. These pathways, therefore, provide a molecular connection between lifestyle and memory and might explain why aging affects people’s memory differently.

To study this in more detail, the researchers analyzed a combination of laboratory data and human data on memory, diet, and activity level.

They applied an exciting approach, which uses laboratory findings to inform the analysis of human data. Known as back-translation, it allows for a more targeted approach.

“We believe this to be a useful and unbiased approach to investigate healthy aging while minimizing the translational gap, which often affects in vitro studies,” the researchers explain.

Gene-environment interactions

The researchers exposed the NSCs to chemicals and repeated subculturing to mimic the aging process and then looked at the genes they expressed.

They used the findings to analyze data from over 2,000 people, including genetic information and data on their memory, eating patterns, including diet type, and overall calorie intake, and physical activity levels.

The researchers found that the genes ABTB1 and GRB10 were involved in both nutrient sensing and memory. These genes appear to mediate the connection between diet, aging, and memory.

“Identifying these genes as the missing links between these three important variables could inform new approaches to help improve the aging process through targeted changes in diet and exercise and ultimately in developing new drugs,” says lead author, Chiara de Lucia, from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London.

Researchers associated the variations in the gene ABTB1 with cognitive performance on a memory task. They found that the GRB10 gene was an important link between diet and memory.

The research suggests that these discoveries could lead to practical recommendations to help keep people cognitively well as they age.

For example, people with a particular variant of GRB10 could benefit from consuming a Mediterranean diet, while those with variations in gene SIRT1 could benefit more from physical exercise.

“Finding the means to prevent or slow down the processes that drive the decline of our thought processes during aging is one of the great endeavors of the 21st century. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies looking at these relationships with human data and adopting this back-translation approach,” explains senior author, Dr. Sandrine Thuret.

“Our findings suggest that changes in lifestyle may be able to delay a decline in memory and thinking but that the effectiveness of these approaches will depend on the genetic makeup of each person,” she added.

Although this is an exciting study, it has some limitations. For example, the researchers used data that came from cells. They cultured the cells in a way that mimics human aging but does not accurately recapitulate it.

The researchers say future work should try to repeat these findings using larger datasets. This will help scientists to understand better how diet, exercise, and memory influence each other.
