]]>A suspected gunman fatally shot himself Wednesday as Minneapolis police were moving in to arrest him for a slaying committed hours earlier, sparking looting in the downtown area, police told Fox News.
The man was with a female at a parking garage around 2 p.m. when they encountered another man, Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder said. The couple got into a confrontation with the man, who was fatally shot by the man who was with the woman.

The couple fled on foot but the woman was taken into custody by police a short time later. Authorities searched for the suspected gunman and found him just after 6 p.m. in the Nicollet Mall area, a shopping and dining district in the downtown area.
“As officers approached, he produced a handgun and shot himself,” Elder told Fox News.
Surveillance footage of the shooting showed the man shooting himself near a group of people.
Officers did not open fire, he said.
Looting inside downtown businesses occurred after the shooting, Elder said, but no details were available. Officers were beginning to make arrests, he said. Videos posted to social media appeared to show people smashing windows and breaking into businesses to steal merchandise.

Mayor Jacob Frey pleaded for everyone to go home during a news conference. He imposed an immediate curfew and requested assistance from the National Guard.
“What we’re calling for right now is peace,” he said. “This destruction and property damage just takes away from that underlying goal.”
Police Chief Medaria Arradondo dispelled misinformation that his officers were involved in the suicide death, saying it was not officer-related.
“I will not allow to add more trauma to a city that’s still grieving from May 25,” referencing the death of George Floyd, whose death while in Minneapolis police custody sparked ongoing nationwide protests and riots.
He said one officer was injured, but not seriously.
Hennepin County Sheriff David Hutchinson told reporters downtown that deputies were assisting the Minneapolis Police Department. He urged people to go home and obtain the facts of the case before jumping to conclusions about what happened hours earlier.
“When the police do things wrong we need to hold them accountable, but this is not the case,” he told reporters. “We as the police, the Sheriff’s Office did nothing wrong tonight.”
Gov. Tim Walz declared a peacetime emergency Wednesday night and said the National Guard and 150 Minnesota State Patrol troopers were being mobilized to assist local law enforcement.

“Minneapolis, it’s time to heal. We must rebuild and recover. Dangerous, unlawful behavior will not be tolerated,” he wrote. “The State Patrol is headed to Minneapolis to help restore order. I remain in close contact with the city and every state resource stands ready to help bring peace.”

Crowds of looters were reported at Walnut Creek’s Broadway Plaza; San Francisco’s Union Square also saw multiple high-end stores targeted.
A tweet reportedly urged looters to target Santana Row and Valley Fair in San Jose/Santa Clara, but police shut down those areas. The closest looting was at a CVS and a BevMo at Winchester and Stevens Creek boulevards.

]]>The looting and destruction continued during overnight riots in New York City for a third night in a row, even as Mayor Bill de Blasio reported “limited protest activity” in Lower Manhattan.

Fox News crews on the scene in SoHo reported hundreds of people stealing from luxury stores – including Chanel and Dior – for hours on Sunday night going into the early hours of Monday morning. The looters were seen piling shoplifted merchandise into vehicles while others rode off with the merchandise in black garbage bags balanced on CitiBikes.
Eyewitnesses told Fox News the looting started before 11 p.m. Sunday, following a day of protests demanding justice for the death of George Floyd while in police custody. The daytime demonstrations had been largely peaceful, according to NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea.
“Most of the day we had large crowds throughout the city in multiple boroughs [on Sunday]. But when it got dark, things changed and it changed rapidly,” Shea said on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” on Monday morning. “We anticipated it, but you saw large groups of people had no inclination to all this protest once it got dark, particularly in the area of SoHo between Canal and West Broadway. We had a number of stores broken into.”
Fox News reported nearly two dozen stores destroyed, defaced or broken into, and looters emptying the shops while throwing debris at news crews and littering the streets with discarded shoeboxes and miscellaneous clothing items.

Meanwhile, de Blasio took to Twitter before midnight on Sunday to say he had been at Union Square and Barclays Center but saw little protest activity. Looters were seen on the scene past 3 a.m.
The NYPD avoided scrimmages with thieves and instead focused on clearing the streets, which saw thousands of demonstrators throughout the weekend.
A spokesperson for the NYPD told Fox News over 250 arrests were made on Sunday and seven officers were injured in the process. Additionally, 11 police vehicles were vandalized, the NYPD said.
