The first night of the Republican National Convention, which was held at North Carolina’s Charlotte Convention Center, saw Donald Trump Jr., Tim Scott, Kimberly Guilfoyle and others make the the case for President Trump’s re-election. From burns about first night’s speeches to photoshop-heavy skits, here’s how some of late-night reacted to the RNC kickoff.
Stephen Colbert gave the 2020 election yet another Avengers spin in response to night one of the RNC.
During last week’s Democratic National Convention, The Late Show’s America: Endgame skit saw the left-leaning politicians as the heroic group of super humans. Leading the pack was Joe Biden’s Captain America, backed by Kamala Harris’ Captain Marvel and Barack Obama’s Iron Man. The latest skit, however takes a deeper look into who makes up Trump’s entourage.
In the video the president, who is this alternate Marvel world’s super villain Thanos, has William Barr as a giant beast, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner as intergalactic henchmen and first lady Melania as Thor: Ragnarok‘s Hela. The video sees Mitch McConnell as the Red Skull and Mike Pence as well…himself.
“I don’t take responsibility at all,” a purple Trump says snapping his fingers. As he snaps, United States Postal Service mailboxes disintegrate and statues of problematic historical figures, like Stonewall Jackson, appear out of midair.
Making a final out-of-place appearance is Eric Trump, who joins in as Bat Man.
The Daily Show host Trevor Noah also chimed in on night one of the Republican National Convention. Though his input wasn’t as fantastical as Colbert’s, Noah gave a concise review of what the event’s premiere looked like.
He kicked off his recap noting how some producers from The Apprentice were involved in the 2020 event.
“Does this mean that Trump is planning on firing people?” Noah excitedly asked. “Maybe if we’re lucky, this week will end with Trump firing one of his kids.”
Noah also brought attention to the RNC’s roll call, which was noticeably less diverse than that showcased at the Democratic National Convention. Though Monday roll call was not as “beautiful” as last week’s in Noah’s eyes, it was still interesting, he said.
The late-night host went on to poke fun at some of the more quirky calls, from a North Carolina representative saying that the state’s “nutmeggers” cast “spicy” votes for the president to another state rep mixing up the words “abolitionists” and “segregationists” in their speech.
“The RNC roll call was depressing, at least a DNC had a ninja chef posing on a beautiful beach,” he quipped. “The most interesting person here looks like he’s getting his mugshot done for after being arrested for sweating too much.”
Earlier in the segment, Noah also acknowledged the need for the Trump-centered convention. Last week the host and comedian said that the DNC’s featuring of guests hailing from different political parties was meant to sway some Republican and uncertain voters towards voting for Biden. But with Trump speaking nearly every night of the convention, Noah said the RNC serves another purpose.
“The Republican Party on the other hand, they only care about the appeasing Trump because it’s his party now. If you don’t like it you can shut the f**k up or join John Kasich in that field.”

]]>The Big Idea is a series that asks top lawmakers and figures to discuss their moonshot — what’s the one proposal, if politics and polls and even price tag were not an issue, they’d implement to change the country for the better?
Stephen Moore, a member of President Trump’s economic recovery task force and an economist at FreedomWorks, has a bold idea for how to reinvigorate the economy: abolish the federal income tax, and replace it with a national sales tax.
On the face of it, it may seem like a radical notion especially since essentially all Americans nowadays have grown up having a chunk of their income pulled out by the IRS every year. But Moore notes that the income tax is a relatively new invention in the U.S. — having only been introduced in the early 20th century.
On the state level, having a sales tax and no income tax is hardly novel, with a number of states having exactly this set-up. But doing so nationally would mark a radical upheaval of the current tax system, and at a time when the U.S. is spending trillions of dollars on stimulus — although Moore maintains it could raise more revenue than the current system.
Whether such an idea would find bipartisan support is uncertain — presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden has called for increasing income taxes on high earners — but Moore believes that, at a time when the economy needs stimulating, his plan would be “rocket fuel.”
Moore spoke to Fox News about his plan:
You want to scrap the income tax in favor of a national sales tax. So what would be the advantage of such a move?
Well, can you imagine the United States without the burden of an income tax? It would be rocket fuel for the U.S. economy. Imagine how much we would grow and how prosperous we would become if we started taxing people on what they take out of the economy — which is what they consume — rather than what they put into the economy, which is their work and their thrift and their productivity and their entrepreneurship. So it makes much more sense to tax people on what they consume rather than what they invest and their work, and every model shows that you’d see dramatic increases in living standards for Americans if we just simply taxed people at the savings level, in other words…it would be much more sensible to tax people on what they consume rather than what they earn.
And we know this, by the way, because there are nine states in the U.S. that have no income tax … and those states have much higher rates of job creation than the states that have income taxes. The no-income-tax states include Florida, Texas, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Washington, Nevada, South Dakota and others, they are very high growth states so the states are a good example on why it makes more sense to tax people on their income and their sales rather than on their work.
At a time when America is spending trillions of dollars on economic stimulus and there are calls for higher taxes to pay for that stimulus, what would you say to those who say that scrapping a tax seems counterintuitive?
Well I’m talking about replacing the income tax, so I’m replacing the corporate tax, the personal income tax, the capital gains tax, the estate tax, the dividend tax. Think about that, there’d be no tax on those and I’m saying is what you do is pay your tax at the cash register like you do at the state level. You go into a 7-Eleven or you go into a store, you pay a sales tax, so you’d pay, say a sales tax of about 17 percent, but you’d pay no income tax.
What impact do you think it would have on tax revenue but also on who pays the tax?
First of all the most important thing to get that budget balanced and get the revenues in is to get the economy growing at a very rapid pace, and I don’t have any doubt that if we didn’t have the encumbrance of an income tax we’d see a very, very rapidly growing economy and when people earn more and spend more, they pay more tax. It’s a very smart way to tax.
Texas and Florida do this, they don’t have an income tax and they are able to balance their budgets, so why can’t the U.S. government do it? So this would raise as much money, or even more, than our current tax system, but it would do it in a way that would raise the incomes of Americans.
And by the way, another huge advantage of this is that you wouldn’t have to have an IRS. Think about that, you wouldn’t have to have the government knowing how much money you’d make, your personal financial privacy would be your own business, you wouldn’t have the IRS snooping into your financial records, you wouldn’t have April 15th (this year it’s July 15) as Tax Day where you have to fill out mountains of paperwork.
So it’s administratively clean, it’s economically smart and it protects our liberties.
Finally, what chance do you think this would have of getting bipartisan support in Washington?
Well, I’ve always said it’s going to take a financial crisis for people to realize how sinister our income tax system is. When we started with the income tax 100 years ago the highest tax rate was 7 percent and it went up as high as 70 percent. Joe Biden is talking about a 50 percent tax rate, those are confiscatory levels of taxes, so I think the American people are fed up with the income tax. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, but I think at some point Americans are going to say ‘let’s do what’s best for the vast majority of Americans.’

By the way, the people who would benefit the most from this plan would be lower-income Americans because there would be more jobs, more opportunities, you could have something called a rebate, so every American would be given a card and your first $20,000 of purchases during a year would be tax-free, so someone living at a poverty level wouldn’t be paying any taxes at all. So there are ways to do this to make it progressive, so the rich pay a larger share of the tax.
But my goodness, if it’s jobs and growth and prosperity and economic opportunity that we want in America, what better way to do this than abolish the income tax? And don’t forget, by the way, that for roughly the first 125 years of this nation we did not have an income tax until around 1917. So we proved we can grow very rapidly, we started to become a great nation in that era without an income tax, so it’s not as if this is some kind of strange idea — it was really in the heritage of the country from the very start.

]]>Stephen A. Smith had a friendly conversation with Mark Levin on Wednesday after the ESPN host called into “The Mark Levin Show” to discuss the controversy surrounding the anti-Semitic posts made by Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson.
Smith began by acknowledging that Levin had the right to be “incredibly upset” at Jackson, who posted quotes attributed to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler and rhetoric from Louis Farrakhan, who has been labeled as anti-Semitic by numerous hate watchdogs. The ESPN host told Levin that the social media posts were “inappropriate” and that there was “no excuse” for them, though he did credit the NFL star for making an immediate apology and that he has “opened himself up” to be educated by the Jewish community.
“In the 13 years that he’s been in the National Football league, he’s certainly never had something like this come up before, but it’s still no excuse,” Smith said.
However, Smith took issue with Levin’s call for Jackson to be “let go” by the Eagles, but Levin pushed back, calling Jackson’s actions a “hard mistake.”
“I mean, you’re praising Hitler?” Levin exclaimed. “To Jews… that is it.”

Smith then revealed to Levin that he had called Jackson when he found out about the Instagram posts and the first thing he told him was “What the hell are you doing?! Why would you do something like that?” He explained that Jackson claimed he was trying to “uplift Black folks.”
“I said, ‘What the hell are you doing mentioning Hitler?! Why would you do that?! That makes no sense!” Smith recalled telling Jackson.
The discussion later shifted to Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling during the national anthem, something Smith reiterated he opposed at the time but acknowledged the quarterback’s right to do so.
“You took a lot of heat for this,” Levin told Smith.
“I don’t give a damn, you know me,” the “First Take” commentator responded. “I say what I feel. I mean what I say. And let the chips fall where they may. If I’m wrong, then I’ll stand and correct myself and say I was wrong, but if I was right, I’m not budging.”

“When it comes to him, all I would say is because I know you have a lot of folks out there that obviously felt that it was a patriotic issue. What I’m telling you… when Colin Kaepernick took a knee, we didn’t take it that way… We might not have done that, but he has the right to do it as an American citizen.”
“Do you think this helps sports?” the “Life, Liberty, & Levin” host then asked. “Politics aside, seriously, I can’t watch this stuff anymore, Stephen A. Honestly.”
As someone who has been to many games, Smith pointed out that there are “many people” who don’t stand or sing for the national anthem but he “still manages” to enjoy the game and asked why someone with opposing political views can’t do the same.
“I’ll tell you the difference. I’m not watching a football game or going to a football game to watch some slob with a beer in the stands. I’m going there to watch the players,” Levin responded. “I’m buying the jerseys. I’m buying their sneakers. I’m buying what they’re selling… I’m into the team, not some shmuck who’s standing behind me doing whatever the hell he’s doing.”
“What Colin Kaepernick does, even if you disagree with it, didn’t stop you from watching the game because he did nothing during the game,” Smith later shot back. “It was before the game!”
Levin stressed to Smith that the average American can’t walk into work wearing “T-shirts with political statements” since it’s against employer rules and that the First Amendment has “nothing to do with the football game.”
The conservative radio host also blasted NFL Commissioner Roger Gooddell, who he called a “gutless wonder” for flipping on the issue of kneeling.
“Get a spine, take a position, and stick with your position!” Levin exclaimed.

Before ending the conversation, Levin floated the idea of him and Smith collaborating to form a new show.
“You and I ought to do a nationally-syndicated TV show together,” Levin suggested.
“In terms of you and I, we’d win,” Smith said. “I mean, I’d win the sports debate. You’d win the political debate. We’d both win in the ratings.”
“But we’d have fun and everybody would know how to talk to each other,” Levin added.
“That would be true,” Smith agreed. “Because you and I talk off the record all the time.”

]]>Food and Drug Commissioner Stephen Hahn refused Sunday to referee President Trump’s claim that 99% of COVID-19 cases are “totally harmless,” a notion belied by administration scientists who estimate that only a quarter of infected persons never show symptoms.
Global authorities say one in five patients require special treatment for the disease, which has killed about 130,000 people in the U.S.
“I’m not going to get into who’s right and who’s wrong. It’s a serious problem that we have, we’ve seen the surge in cases,” Dr. Hahn told CNN’s “State of the Union” after being asked to address the claim Mr. Trump made on the White House South Lawn late Saturday.
Dr. Hahn also deflected questions about crowd behavior at Mount Rushmore, where Mr. Trump spoke late Friday to a large gathering before a fireworks display at the majestic monument.
Many attendees were not wearing masks, although outdoor gatherings are considered safer than indoor ones.
The commissioner said the crowd followed local and state guidelines.
Dr. Hahn did say that if people flout federal guidelines, then “you are putting yourself and your loved ones at risk.”
Austin Mayor Steve Adler said he realized Dr. Hahn is in a tough spot but it makes him “angry” to hear inconsistent messaging from the federal level, as Texas and other Sun Belt states see a surge in cases, hospitalizations and the percentage of tests returning positive.
Mr. Adler said that when residents “start hearing that kind of ambitious message coming out of Washington, there are more and more people who won’t wear masks” or practice social distancing.
The mayor said he’s glad that members of both parties in his state are issuing a clearer call for precautions because his hospitals are “within two weeks” of being overrun with COVID-19 patients.
Last week, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a mask-wearing mandate for most counties.
“I just hope this message hasn’t come too late,” he said.
The mayor said he doesn’t think the governor needs to issue a statewide stay-at-home order, though believes local authorities should be able to exercise shutdown powers.
As states grapple with social behavior, Mr. Trump late Saturday predicted a COVID-19 vaccine would be available “long before the end of the year.”
Yet Dr. Hahn, whose agency is in charge of approving and regulating therapeutics and vaccines, said he couldn’t give a firm timeline.
“I can’t predict when a vaccine will be available,” Dr. Hahn said on ABC’s “This Week.” “Yes, we are seeing unprecedented speed for the development of a vaccine.
The FDA issued a set of guidelines and recommendations to companies developing a vaccine, so they understand federal expectations.
The commissioner said he hopes clinical data on vaccine candidates’ safety and efficacy “are available sooner rather than later, we will make that judgment based upon those data and that science.”

]]>Rep. Stephen Lynch on Tuesday asked FBI Director Christopher A. Wray for a classified briefing on whether foreign adversaries are exploiting the George Floyd protests to sow discord in the U.S.
Mr. Lynch, Massachusetts Democrat, requested the briefing for the House Oversight and Reform Committee’s Subcommittee on National Security by next Friday.
“I am deeply concerned that foreign adversaries may exploit this critical moment in American history to exacerbate social and cultural differences across the American political spectrum and ultimately threaten our national security,” Mr. Lynch wrote in a letter to Mr. Wray.
Mr. Lynch cited reports that Chinese and Russian-backed media outlets and social media accounts were pushing “divisive messages” piggybacking on top of social media hashtags critical of how authorities have handled the protests.
“As of June 1, 2020, Chinese Foreign Ministry officials, Russian-backed news outlets, and others with ties to Russia and China have tweeted more than 1,200 times about U.S. protests using hashtags such as #BlackLivesMatter and #Minneapolis,” he wrote.
Russia used similar tactics to create disinformation campaigns and further divide the nation during the 2016 presidential election.
Attorney General William P. Barr said earlier this month foreign agents are helping foment the dissent and inflame the violence that has erupted in U.S. cities in the wake of Floyd’s death while in police custody.
“I believe we have evidence that some foreign hackers and groups associated with foreign governments are focused on this particular situation we have here and exacerbate it every way they can,” he told reporters.
Mr. Wray, speaking at the same press conference, said it’s the kind of behavior they’ve seen before.
“It is, unfortunately, not unusual for foreign actors to choose to amplify events in this country to sow divisiveness and discord, particularly through the use of state associated media, which provides a bullhorn to amplify and gin up more controversy than exists,” he said.

An Ohio state senator sparked outrage after asking a black health expert if “the colored population” gets hit harder by the coronavirus because they “do not wash their hands as well.”
Sen. Stephen Huffman — who is also a doctor — shocked the state Senate Health Committee Tuesday, ironically during a debate over whether racism was a public health crisis.
“Could it just be that African Americans — the colored population — do not wash their hands as well as other groups?” Huffman asked Angela Dawson, the director of the Ohio Commission on Minority Health, about disparities among those most at risk from the contagion.
He then suggested they may fail to wear masks or “socially distance themselves” as much as other communities, according to video shared by the Columbus Dispatch.
“Could that just be maybe the explanation of why there’s a higher incidence?” he asked.
After a pause, Dawson — who is black — replied, “That is not the opinion of leading medical experts in this country.”
Rep. Stephanie Howse, president of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus, accused him of suggesting that African Americans are dirty.
“He highlights what racism is from a systematic perspective,” she told the paper, noting Huffman is a “full legislator” as well as a doctor.
“Do you think that someone who acknowledges the ‘coloreds’ is going to give the love and care that people need when they come through those doors?” said asked.
Democratic state Sen. Cecil Thomas told the paper that the audience cringed when his colleague made the remark to the Senate Health Committee.
“He’s an example of why we have to have this discussion about racism and how it impacts people.”
Huffman told the Columbus Dispatch it was all down to a poor choice of words, with no malice intended.
“Regrettably, I asked a question in an unintentionally awkward way that was perceived as hurtful and was exactly the opposite of what I meant,” he insisted.
“I was trying to focus on why COVID-19 affects people of color at a higher rate since we really do not know all the reasons.”

Just ask around. And if you hear some good stories, eat it. Eat it, you coward.”
Trump cited the fact that he “gets a lot of positive calls” about the drug as evidence of its effectiveness. To which Colbert replied, “For the sake of his children, I hope he’s not getting a lot of positive calls about Clorox.”
The host then moved on to the surprisingly strong “clap back” Trump received from Fox News host Neil Cavuto, who warned his viewers, “If you are taking this as a preventative treatment to ward off the virus or in a worst-case scenario, you are dealing with the virus, and you are in this vulnerable population, it will kill you. I cannot stress that enough. This. Will. Kill. You.”
“OK, Neil, but to be fair, after that, technically, you don’t have the virus anymore,” Colbert said. “Anyway, I’m not a doctor, but the newsman says it’s deadly, so I hope I’m not surprising anyone when I say, Mr. President, don’t take it.”
