]]>The shooting of two Los Angeles county sheriff’s deputies in an apparent ambush prompted a manhunt, reaction from the president and protests outside the hospital where the wounded deputies were being treated on Saturday night.
The deputies were shot while sitting in their patrol car at a Metro rail station, around 7pm and not far from the the Compton sheriff’s station. They were able to radio for help, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said. The department shared video of the shooting, showing a person open fire through the passenger-side window.
“The gunman walked up on the deputies and opened fire without warning or provocation,” the department said.
The video sparked thousands of reactions, including from President Donald Trump, who responded, “Animals that must be hit hard!”
The 31-year-old female deputy and 24-year-old male deputy both underwent surgery, Villanueva said. Both graduated from the academy 14 months ago, he added.
Villanueva, whose department has come under fire during protests over racism and police brutality, expressed frustration over anti-police sentiment as he urged people to pray for the officers.
“It pisses me off. It dismays me at the same time,” he said.
Protesters gathered outside the emergency room at the hospital where the injured deputies were being treated.
“To the protesters blocking the entrance & exit of the HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM yelling ‘We hope they die’ referring to 2 LA Sheriff’s ambushed today in Compton: DO NOT BLOCK EMERGENCY ENTRIES & EXITS TO THE HOSPITAL,” the sheriff’s department tweeted. “People’s lives are at stake when ambulances can’t get through.”
A radio reporter near the protest was taken into custody, KABC-TV reported. The sheriff’s department later tweeted that the reporter interfered with the arrest of a male protester.
“The female adult, who was later identified as a member of the press, did not identify herself as press and later admitted she did not have proper press credentials on her person,” the department stated.
Capt Kent Wegener said officers were blanketing the area in search of a suspect seen on the video opening fire with a pistol.
“We have a very, very generic description,” he said.

]]>Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were fighting for their lives after being shot Saturday evening in Compton what authorities described as an “ambush” that was captured on surveillance video.
The video, released by the department, shows a gunman walking up to parked patrol car, pulling out a gun and firing several times into the front seat area from the passenger side. The assailant is then seen running from the scene.

The Sheriff’s Department reported that the shooting occurred about 7 p.m. near the Blue Line station at 275 Willowbrook Ave.
“One male deputy and one female deputy were ambushed as they sat in their patrol vehicle. Both sustained multiple gunshot wounds and are in critical condition. They are both currently undergoing surgery,” the department said in a statement.
Law enforcement sources told The Times at least one of the deputies was shot in the face and another in the head when a gunman approached their car.
They also said detectives were also reviewing video surveillance footage that captures parts of the attack.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva is at the hospital where the deputies are being treated.
No further details were immediately available, and it was unclear ifdetectives have identified a suspect.
Both of the deputies were members of the Sheriff’s transportation detail.
Metro has split policing duties of its 1,433-mile service area — including 93 rail stations and nearly 14,000 bus stops — among three agencies: The Los Angeles Police Department, which patrols buses, trains and stations in the city of L.A.; the Long Beach police, who work at eight Blue Line stations; and the Sheriff’s Department, which patrols the rest of the system.
This summer, the Metro board approved a series of policing reform measures, including no longer sending armed officers to respond to nonviolent crimes, hiring unarmed ambassadors to work at stations and expanding fare discounts.
Compton was the scene of a deadly deputy-involved shooting on Thursday. The sheriff’s department said detectives shot and killed a man who they said opened fire on them as they served a search warrant. There is no indication the incidents are connected.

]]>The sheriffs of Clackamas and Washington County in Oregon said they won’t send staff to help with the nightly unrest in Portland after Gov. Kate Brown unveiled a plan to bring an end to violence in the city.
Brown had asked the sheriffs and the Gresham Police Department to support the Portland Police Bureau with personnel and resources “to keep the peace and protect free speech.”
Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts on Monday said the governor never approached him before unveiling her plan to mobilize local law enforcement agencies in the Portland protests, and that he has no plans to send his staff to nightly demonstrations.

“Had Governor Brown discussed her plan with my office, I would have told her it’s about changing policy, not adding resources,” he said, according to a statement released by Kellee Azar, a reporter with Portland’s KATU. “Increasing law enforcement resources in Portland will not solve the nightly violence and now, murder.”
The sheriff added that his staff would still assist Oregon State Police with service calls that they normally handle in Clackamas County.
Under the six-point plan unveiled on Sunday, Brown said the nearly 100 days of protests have stretched the Portland Police Bureau’s resources thin.

She argued that additional local and state personnel, as well as federal resources, will give the Police Bureau “the investigative capacity to arrest and charge those individuals who have engaged in violent or destructive acts and endangered public safety.”
It was unveiled after a man was fatally shot amid clashes between supporters of President Trump and Black Lives Matter protesters.
Washington County Sheriff Pat Garrett also released a statement on Monday, saying he’s committed to supporting Portland Police through “indirect ways, like analyzing risks associated with social media, air support, assisting with a specific criminal investigation, etc.”
“I do not plan to send deputies to work directly in Portland,” Garrett said, according to the station. “The lack of political support for public safety, the uncertain legal landscape, the current volatility combined with intense scrutiny on use of force presents an unacceptable risk if deputies were deployed directly.”
A Gresham police spokesperson told The Oregonian, “We are in agreement with the other agencies.”
Meanwhile, the Oregon Association Chiefs of Police released a statement on Monday, saying “we cannot dedicate our limited resources away from the communities we serve,” according to KATU.

After the statement by Sheriff Roberts was released, Brown’s office told the station the plan is “meant to allow for this kind of flexibility in supporting each other as we all collectively deal with the difficult situation in Portland.”

]]>The Los Angeles County sheriff’s new policy banning his department from turning over any illegal immigrant criminals to ICE, no matter how serious the crimes, will result in innocent people — often migrants themselves — being killed or raped, Homeland Security’s No. 2 official said.
Ken Cuccinelli, serving as deputy secretary, wrote a withering letter laying out his concerns over the policy, but said he doesn’t have much hope of convincing Sheriff Alex Villanueva by logic. Instead, he figures to “shame” the sheriff into reversing course.
“It is a no-brainer to say putting 180 murderers, 750 rapists and 1,400 weapons offenders back on the streets when they could have otherwise been removed from the country will lead to other murders, rapes and weapons offenses in that community,” Mr. Cuccinelli told The Washington Times in an exclusive interview.
He added: “People on Los Angeles will die and be raped because of this sherif’s actions, and those are victims that never had to be victims.”
Mr. Cuccinelli wrote a letter to Sheriff Villanueva last week laying out his concerns over the new policy, announced Aug. 18.
While Los Angeles isn’t the most aggressive sanctuary for unauthorized migrants in the country, it is perhaps the most significant. Given the county’s size, demographics and proximity to the border, it has been by far the top source over the years of illegal immigrants with criminal records for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
In 2019, ICE flagged more than 11,000 illegal immigrants in sheriff’s office custody. They accounted for 180 homicide charges, 750 sex crimes and 1,400 weapons offenses.
“Serious crimes with real victims,” Mr. Cuccinelli wrote in his letter to the sheriff.
The Times reached out to the sheriff’s office, and a spokesperson asked for a copy of the letter. The Times provided it on Friday, then after two days of prodding Deputy Shawn De Busky replied Sunday by telling The Times to refer to the sheriff’s original announcement.
Sanctuary jurisdictions — which resist or in some cases outright refuse cooperation with ICE, and sometimes with Customs and Border Protection — have increases dramatically under President Trump as counties, cities and some states use it as a way of showing resistance.
California has a statewide sanctuary law that limits the sorts of migrants that police can report to ICE, but it includes exceptions for significant crimes. Sheriff Villanueva’s policy goes further than California.
In his Aug. 18 statement announcing the policy Sheriff Villanueva said his county is home to one million illegal immigrants, and he suggested they are “afraid to report crime, out of fear of deportation and having their families torn apart.”
“I will not allow an entire segment of the population to be afraid to report crimes to law enforcement and be forced, again, back into the shadows,” he said.
Studies of crime reporting, ICE activity and sanctuary jurisdictions are inconclusive.
In Los Angeles City, after Mr. Trump took office in 2017 police leaders said they recorded a significant drop in Hispanic reporting of some personal crimes such as domestic violence, which they attributed to fear of being snared by ICE.
But a Washington Times review of the data showed that drop quickly dissipated. And after California’s sanctuary law was enacted in 2018, there was no relative increase in crime Hispanic reporting, despite, presumably, a lower fear.
Sheriff Villanueva said he would respect a judicial warrant, if ICE were to obtain one, and turn over illegal immigrants in that case.
ICE says that’s an intentional misstatement of the way Congress set up the immigration system. No such warrant exists for immigration violations.
Mr. Cuccinelli said there’s not another area of law enforcement where local authorities refuse to cooperate with other local, state or federal law enforcement agencies than immigration.
“What we are seeing is the pollution of law enforcement by politicization,” he said.
Mr. Cuccinelli said it is particularly striking that sanctuary jurisdictions, often run by Democrats who also want to impose restrictions on firearms possession, are actively shielding illegal immigrants with gun charges.
He said in Sheriff Villanueva’s case, he knows ICE doesn’t target crime victims, and in fact will work to protect them in situations where local authorities are trying to make cases.
But if ICE doesn’t have access to criminals in the county’s jails, it will go looking for them in neighborhoods, he said. Not only is that less safe — the chance of a violent encounter is far higher out in communities than in a secure jail setting — but if ICE officers see other illegal immigrants while out in the community, they can arrest them.
Mr. Cuccinelli said the sheriff is aware of that.
“The only convincing that I’m trying to do here is by shame, is by spelling out you say you want to do A but you do it in a way that hurts A,” he said. “I’m under no illusions that I can just enlighten him to the truth and he’ll change his decisions. He’s not making a decision that is sensitive to the truth.”
Mr. Cuccinelli said Sheriff Villanueva has complained about releasing criminals during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying it puts dangerous people out on the streets where they may commit new crimes.
Mr. Cuccinelli pointed out that’s exactly the same threat posed by the criminals ICE wants to deport — yet which Los Angeles is now actively shielding.
“This is pure hypocrisy that put real lives in danger,” he wrote.

]]>The half brother of Robert Fuller, a young Black man who was found hanging from a tree in Palmdale last week, was shot dead by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies during a shootout Wednesday afternoon in Kern County, according to law enforcement sources and an attorney for the family.
The shooting occurred about 4:30 p.m. in a parking lot in Rosamond, a community about 20 miles north of Palmdale. The killing came as activists and community members have been openly critical of how Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies handled the investigation into Fuller’s death.
Lt. Robert Westphal of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the fatal shooting occurred during a kidnapping and assault investigation that is being handled by the department’s major-crimes bureau.
Westphal did not identify the man who was fatally shot. Jamon Hicks, an attorney for the Fuller family, confirmed that the man killed by deputies was Terron Boone.
Court records show that Boone was charged Tuesday with multiple criminal counts including criminal threats, assault, false imprisonment and domestic violence.
On Wednesday afternoon, Westphal said detectives trailed the car that the suspect was riding in and followed it back to an apartment complex in Rosamond. The deputies attempted a traffic stop.
The suspect, later identified as Boone, exited the car’s passenger side and opened fire, according to Westphal, who said the suspect fired at least five shots toward the detectives. Deputies returned fire and shot him the chest, killing him, according to Westphal.
The woman driving the car was shot once in the chest and taken to a local hospital, where she was treated and released Wednesday night. A 7-year-old girl was in the car’s back seat but was not injured in the gunfire, Westphal said. The child’s relationship to the other two people in the car was unclear.
Detectives recovered a semiautomatic handgun at the scene.
None of the detectives nor their vehicles were equipped with cameras, but investigators are trying to recover footage from Ring cameras and other home video systems in the area, Westphal said.
Surveillance video of the incident posted by the Rosamond Community Watchdog, a local news platform, showed multiple vehicles trailing a dark SUV into a housing complex parking lot. Voices repeatedly shouted, “Hands up!” before gunfire erupted.
Siara Anderson said she was on the balcony of an apartment building adjacent to the parking lot in the 3400 block of 15th Street West when Boone was shot. Anderson said that she heard four or five gunshots and saw a man slumped in the passenger seat of a blue sport utility vehicle, clearly dead.
Law enforcement officers, in plainclothes but wearing bulletproof vests, were at the scene, she said, along with about five unmarked police cars.
Hicks, the attorney representing the Fuller family, said relatives and the legal team had no further comment on the incident.
“The family respectfully asks that their privacy be respected. Our prayers remain with the Fuller family,” Hicks said in a statement.
Fuller was discovered hanging from a tree in a Palmdale park on June 10, and the initial cause of death was listed as suicide. But after protests, sheriff’s officials said they would do a full investigation, with assistance from the FBI and state attorney general.
Thousands protested this weekend at the park, with some describing racial incidents in the Antelope Valley and raising concerns over whether Fuller was lynched.
“This is really crazy to all of us,” Fuller’s sister Diamond Alexander said. “We want to find out the truth of what really happened. Everything that they’ve been telling us has not been right.
“To be here, staring at this tree, it don’t make no sense,” Alexander added. “My brother was not suicidal. My brother was a survivor.”
Fuller’s family and friends described him as a peacemaker, a street-smart man with shoulder-length dreadlocks and a bright smile who loved music, anime and video games and mostly stayed to himself. Days before he died, he attended a Black Lives Matter protest.
