The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported 25 additional cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday and no new deaths.
The number of Mainers with COVID-19 who have died remains at 140.
The 25 additional cases bring the total since the outbreak began in Maine to 5,171. Twelve of the new cases were in York County, which is at the center of several outbreaks.
The Maine CDC said 4,445 people have recovered from the coronavirus, an increase of 38 since Tuesday.
Active cases decreased from 599 on Tuesday to 586 on Wednesday.

NEW OUTBREAKS
The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday it is investigating several new outbreaks in York County.
Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah said there are 12 cases of the virus at Sanford High School. The high school has switched to remote learning due to the outbreak.
It is the first outbreak involving a public school in Maine, Shah said.
Shah said transmission of the virus is tentatively linked to gatherings outside of the school, including a pickup football game and a sunrise gathering of seniors earlier this month.
The Maine CDC said it is investigating another outbreak in Sanford at the Wolves Club, where five patrons and one staff member have tested positive for the virus.
The other outbreaks reported in York County are at Hussey Seating where three cases have been reported and three cases at the Ogunquit Beach Lobster House.
ONGOING OUTBREAKS
Shah said the number of coronavirus cases at the Baker Company in Sanford has increased to seven.
Shah also said the number of cases at ND Paper in Rumford is now 21. Shah said it appears transmission was focused on one part of the mill but said there is concern about transmission in the community.
Shah said there were no new cases of the virus at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The number of cases remain at 18.
EXPANDED TESTING IN MAINE
The state announced Tuesday that anyone in Maine can be tested for COVID-19 without a separate order from a health care provider.
The Maine Department of Health and Human Services has broadened its standing order to include anyone who feels they need to be tested for the virus.
This means that participating sites may test anyone in Maine over the age of 12 months who feels they need a test, even if they don’t have a primary care provider or a written order from a clinician,” officials said.
The state said it made the move due to expanded testing capacity, including at the state lab in partnership with IDEXX. The state also has nearly 30 swab and send testing locations throughout Maine.
As of Monday, state officials said Maine is conducting 400 tests per 100,000 people, which is a state record.

British Health Minister Matt Hancock said a second national lockdown was one possible step to curb the spread of the coronavirus, but it was not what he wanted to happened.
“If everybody follows the rules then we can avoid further national lockdowns, but we, of course, have to be prepared to take action if that’s what’s necessary,” Hancock told the BBC.
“I don’t rule it out, I don’t want to see it.”
08:30 GMT – Indonesia reports 3,989 new infections, 105 deaths
Indonesia reported 3,989 new coronavirus cases, taking the total to 244,676, data from the country’s health ministry showed.
The data added 105 new deaths, taking the total to 9,553, the biggest death toll in Southeast Asia.

08:25 GMT – S.Korea keeps social distancing curbs ahead of major national holiday
South Korea extended level 2 social distancing for a week until September 27, which limits indoor gatherings to below 50 and outdoor to less than 100, and may tighten limits for the Chuseok holiday when people traditionally reunite with families.
Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said the level 2 restrictions need to be kept ahead of Chuseok as “cases with untraceable origins are steadily increasing and fewer tests being carried out on weekends means we should be on high alert”.
Social distancing policies for the September 30-October 2 holiday will be announced in the coming days.
South Korea reported 82 new cases as of midnight Saturday, the lowest daily infections since mid August, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
07:22 GMT – Czech republic’s daily count of new cases drops to 2,046
The Czech Republic’s daily count of new coronavirus cases dropped to 2,046 on Saturday, still a record number for a weekend day when fewer tests are done, data from the Health Ministry showed.
The overall count of confirmed cases rose to 48,306 in the country of 10.7 million people.
The Czechs have been reporting new cases of the infection at one of Europe’s fastest paces in recent weeks and the authorities have returned to some of the measures used in spring when the pandemic first reached the country.
07:19 GMT – Indonesia halts exports from seafood producer after virus tests
Indonesia has suspended exports from an Indonesian seafood company PT Putri Indah into China after its frozen fish products tested positive for the coronavirus, the country’s fisheries ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said that an investigation was underway and that the suspension would only apply to PT Putri Indah “whereas the others can still do export activities as usual.”
The virus was detected on the outermost side of the package, not on the fish, the ministry said.
The seven-day suspension began on Friday, it said.

05:45 GMT – WHO endorses protocol for virus herbal medicine trials
The World Health Organization has endorsed a protocol for testing African herbal medicines as potential treatments for the coronavirus and other epidemics.
WHO experts and colleagues from two other organisations “endorsed a protocol for phase III clinical trials of herbal medicine for Covid-19 as well as a charter and terms of reference for the establishment of a data and safety monitoring board for herbal medicine clinical trials,” a statement said, according to an AFP new agency report.
“Phase III clinical trials are pivotal in fully assessing the safety and efficacy of a new medical product,” it noted.

03:38 GMT – Australia reports lowest COVID-19 cases in three months
Australia looked set to record its lowest daily increase in new coronavirus cases in three months on Sunday as a hard lockdown in the city of Melbourne brought the country’s virus epicentre down sharply.
The second-most populous state Victoria, of which Melbourne is the capital, reported 14 new infections in the 24 hours to Sunday morning, down from 21 new cases the day prior and its lowest since June 19, according to Reuters news agency.
That put Victoria, which has spent months under lockdown to slow a second wave of infections, on track to meet a target of keeping average daily increases below 50 by September 28 when the authorities have said they may lift restrictions.

Germany’s agency for infectious diseases has reported at least 1,345 new coronavirus cases, raising the country’s total to 271,415.

Brazil’s health ministry has recorded 33,057 additional confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to more than 4.5 million.
Brazil also reported 739 additional deaths for a total death toll of more than 136,000 – the second highest in the world next only to the US.

China’s National Health Commission has reported 10 new coronavirus cases, brining the total number of cases to almost 85,300.

Mexico’s health ministry has reported at least 5,167 additional coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 694,121 cases.
At least 455 new deaths were also reported pushing the death toll to 73,258. Earlier, the government has reported an estimated 120,000 “excess deaths”.

South Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 82 new coronavirus cases – the lowest daily infections since mid August.
Of the new cases reported, at least 72 were local transmission. The country has a total of 22,975 infections with 383 deaths.
00:35 GMT – Brazil, Argentina join COVID-19 vaccine alliance
Brazil and Argentina have announced that they are joining a global alliance seeking to pool COVID-19 vaccines, after missing an earlier deadline.
Peru said it signed a deal giving the country access to 12 million doses of coronavirus vaccine through the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility (COVAX), a scheme for pooled purchase and distribution of future vaccines.
Argentina asked for more time to prepare the required paperwork, but it expects on Wednesday to sign its commitment to the vaccine mechanism led by the World Health Organization (WHO), a health ministry official told Reuters news agency.
The Brazilian government said in a statement late on Friday that it will sign up for COVAX after negotiations with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which is the COVAX secretariat.

French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire has announced that he has contracted the coronavirus – this as the country’s number of infections is surging anew with nearly 13,500 new infections in 24 hours.
Le Maire said that he has so far not shown any symptoms but is under quarantine due to the disease. He is the fourth French minister to test positive of COVID-19.
France has over 467,000 cases and more than 31,200 deaths.

OKLAHOMA CITY —
The Oklahoma State Department of Health on Tuesday reported 1,091 new coronavirus cases across the state, bringing the total cumulative number of the state’s positive cases to 71,314.

Seven additional deaths were reported Tuesday. The latest deaths were reported in Creek, Jackson, Oklahoma, Tillman and Tulsa counties.
According to the health department, there have been 912 coronavirus deaths statewide.

Maryland health officials reported 536 new confirmed coronavirus cases and one more death Monday — the 10th straight day the number of deaths has remained in the single digits.
The latest confirmed coronavirus victim was a woman in her 70s, according to state data.
A total of 3,696 Marylanders now have died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, and the number of confirmed cases has reached 116,646, according to the state health department.
The number of people currently hospitalized fell by four from Sunday to 347, as of Monday. Of those, 90 are in intensive care, one more than Sunday, according to state officials.
It’s the third consecutive day with fewer people hospitalized than the day before, and hospitalizations are down significantly from their peak of 1,711 in late April, according to state data.
Maryland’s seven-day average positivity rate was 3.54% as of Monday morning, down from the 3.68% reported the previous day.
Johns Hopkins University’s coronavirus resource center, which calculates the rate differently than the state, using the number of people tested, rather than the number of total tests administered, pegged the state’s positivity rate is 6.38%. It’s among 28 states and Puerto Rico with rates above the 5% threshold, recommended by the World Health Organization for 14 straight days before governments begin easing virus-related restrictions.
Maryland has not reported fewer than two deaths in a single day since March 28, though it’s reported just two deaths on three days since Aug. 17, including Sunday.
Since the coronavirus arrived in March, the most deaths reported by the state in a single day was 74, which occurred twice, on April 25 and May 5. The state last reported double digits on Sept. 3 and 4 with 11 deaths on both days, and it has not reported more than 30 deaths in one day since June 16.
Four counties — Cecil, Prince George’s, Wicomico and Worcester — have positivity rates above the recommended 5%, the state reported Monday. Cecil County’s rate was 5.63%, Prince George’s was 5.66%, Wicomico’s was 5.50% and Worcester’s was 6.39%, the state reported.
While the disease is deadliest to people over age 65 and those with compromised immune systems or preexisting conditions, 53% of the confirmed cases as of Monday were in people in their 20s, 30s and 40s, according to state data.
The coronavirus has continued to highlight racial disparities in the state, with Black and Latino people being disproportionately affected in both confirmed cases and deaths.
Black people, who make up 30% of Maryland’s population, accounted for nearly 38% of the state’s confirmed cases and 41% of the deaths for which the patient’s race was known, according to the state.

Latinos, who represent only 10% of the state population, made up for about 26% of the confirmed cases and 12% of the deaths for which the patient’s race was known.
White people, by contrast, who make up 60% of the state’s population, accounted for only about 29% of the confirmed cases and 43% of the deaths for which the patient’s race was known.
The race of the patients was not known in 17,535 of the cases in Maryland and nine of the deaths, according to the state.
Maryland’s coronavirus death toll does not include an additional 143 victims whose infections weren’t confirmed by a laboratory test.
As of Monday, the state had administered 2.2 million tests, more than 1.3 million of which have produced negative results, officials said.

]]>Scientists admit they are baffled by a rise in aggressive orca activity, with the whales ramming boats along the Spanish and Portuguese coasts, according to reports by the Guardian.
The number of reported incidents involving orcas has risen over the summer months, with researchers noting that interactions between the whales and boats are not unusual, but the level of aggression displayed in July and August is “highly unusual.”
Researchers speculate that it might be competition for tuna populations along the coast that has led to some distress among the whale populations. Alfredo Lopez, coordinator for the Study of Marine Mammals in Galicia, said orcas make their way up the coast each September to chase tuna.

Since 1999, two of five pods common to the area have learned to take tuna from fishermen drop lines, with several sustaining injuries from the lines as a result.
“We see marks caused by fishing lines,” Jörn Selling, a marine biologist for Firmm whale watching and research foundation, told the Guardian. “We hear about young orca getting hooked.”
However, the events are still considered unusual.
“These are very strange events,” says Ezequiel Andreu Cazalla, a cetacean researcher. “But I don’t think they’re attacks.

Rocio Espada, who works with the marine biology labratory at the University of Seville, said she was astonished by what she’s heard.
“For killer whales to take out a piece of a fiberglass rudder is crazy,” Espada said. “I’ve seen these orcas grow from babies, I know their life stories, I’ve never seen or heard of attacks.”
Spanish maritime authorities have warned vessels to “keep a distance,” but sailors have found that advice difficult to follow, with reports ranging from brief but sudden clashes to sustained ramming for over an hour.
Alfonso Gomez-Jordana Martin, a member of a delivery crew boat, said that their boat was brought to a halt by a pod of four orcas.
“Once we were stopped, they came in faster: 10-15 knots, from a distance of 25m,” Martin said. “The impact tipped the boat sideways.

The skipper’s report of the incident said that the force “nearly dislocated the helmsman’s shoulder and spun the whole yacht through 120 degrees.”

]]>EAU CLAIRE (WKOW) — Laboratory testing confirmed Wisconsin’s first 2020 human death from eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), state health officials announced Friday.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and the Chippewa County Health Department sent out a news release with the information.
A Chippewa County woman in her 60’s was infected, becoming the second case in the state and the first to result in death, after the first confirmed case on Wednesday.
Last week, DHS announced that horses in three northwestern counties were confirmed to be infected with the virus.
The disease can spread to people through bites from infected mosquitoes.
EEE is rare but potentially fatal. It can affect people regardless of their age, health officials said.
DHS released the following preveniton measures:
Avoid Mosquito Bites:
- Apply an insect repellent with DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535 to exposed skin and clothing.
- Prior to heading outdoors, treat clothing with permethrin; do not apply permethrin directly to skin.
- Consider rescheduling outdoor activities that occur during evening or early morning hours, when mosquitoes are most active.
- Wear long-sleeves, long pants, and socks when outdoors to help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.
Mosquito-Proof Your Home:
- Make sure window and door screens are intact and tightly fitted to prevent mosquitoes from getting into your home.
- Prevent mosquitoes from breeding around your home by removing stagnant water from items around your property, such as tin cans, plastic containers, flower pots, discarded tires, roof gutters, and downspouts.
- Turn over wheelbarrows, kiddie pools, buckets, and small boats, such as canoes and kayaks, when not in use.
- Change the water in bird baths and pet dishes at least every three days.
- Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas, and hot tubs; drain water from pool covers.
- Trim or mow tall grass, weeds, and vines since mosquitoes use these areas to rest during hot daylight hours.
