“It is a destruction of our history, something no other First Lady would have had the gall to do,” Eichenwald, a New York Times bestselling author, tweeted on Saturday, “This is the first time I have been furious that @FLOTUS is a foreigner. She has no right to wreck our history.”
Eichenwald made the comments reacting from a tweet from the first lady on Saturday, which featured photos of the renovations.
“Excited to honor history & celebrate the future in our beautiful @WhiteHouse Rose Garden this evening,” Trump tweeted. “Thank you to all who helped renew this iconic & truly gorgeous space.”
Melania Trump, who grew up in Slovenia and became a U.S. citizen in 2006, posted the tweet on the same day the work on the garden, which took three weeks to complete, was showcased to reporters.

“The very act of planting a garden involves hard work and hope in the possibility of a bright future,” she said in a statement last month. “Preserving the history and beauty of the White House and its grounds is a testament to our nation’s commitment to the care of this landscape and our dedication to American ideals, safeguarding them for our children and their children for generations to come.”
Eichenwald, who spent two decades as a senior writer at The New York Times, also tweeted on Saturday, “I still find it unbelievable that @FLOTUS who has only been a citizen since the middle of GW Bush’s second term had the audacity to wreck the Rose Garden, to pull up history dating back a lifetime.”
“These trashy, evil, stupid people need to get out of our house,” he continued. “What GALL she has.”
Mehdi Hasan, a journalist who is a senior columnist at online news publication The Intercept and host on the Al Jazeera network, reacted to that tweet writing, “This is a horrible anti-immigrant take, Kurt, and you should delete it and apologize.”
CNN Anchor Jake Tapper agreed with Hasan writing in a tweet, “This is xenophobic and wrong. It’s bigotry.”
Eichenwald added in another tweet responding to some of the criticism that, “Someone who has only been a citizen for less than 1/3 of her life should be reverent to America’s history, should honor our history, not decide her personal taste should rip it up.”
A spokesperson for Melania Trump did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment regarding Eichenwald’s tweets.

The Rose Garden is an “iconic” location where presidents host events and even press briefings, the first lady’s team said. The renovations included “improved Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility, utilities, and support for audiovisual and broadcasting needs that will allow for the continued enjoyment of the garden’s natural beauty,” her team said.

“It definitely was traumatic,” Hernandez said. “I have seen a lot of crazy stuff, especially in Portland, but what I witnessed this particular night literally was … a borderline execution, an attempted execution.”
He added, “By the time they had him on the floor, they had already punched him, kicked him, they brought him down strategically with some pretty impressive combat moves, twice, and he was already submissive on the floor. He was almost pretty much waving the white flag … and then they dealt that kick to the back of the head which was completely unacceptable.”
Host Brian Kilmeade pressed on exactly what happened because other witnesses claim the man tried to run them over with his truck and that he was a White supremacist.
According to Hernandez, it was part of a series of events, beginning with a Black Lives Matter rally where the rhetoric was “extremely dangerous.”
“The guest speaker that night was saying things like she believes that police officers should have been choked by their own umbilical cords when they were babies … that she is willing and ready by any means necessary to achieve justice,” he said.
Three people started accusing a young White man of recording them and then they “physically assaulted him” in front of a 7-Eleven, when a transgender woman stepped in to defend him. When the three people starting robbing and beating up the transgender woman, the truck driver stepped in.
“Then they chase him down the street until he eventually crashes. That’s when you see him out of the car and they just execute him in my opinion,” Hernandez said. “It was very violent.”
The truck driver is recovering in the hospital as Portland police continue their investigation into the incident.
There have been no publicly announced updates regarding the manhunt for a suspect in the assault, Marquise Love, who also goes by the name “Keese Love.” Police said Tuesday they had made several attempts to contact Love, for whom they said they have probable cause to arrest, and are now working to locate him.
“This isn’t the only guy that needs to be brought to justice,” Hernandez said. “There are multiple individuals that were involved with this that assaulted, physically assaulted multiple people that you will see on video.”

Over the weekend, San Francisco Police arrested two individuals accused of running a meth lab out of their hotel room that was part of the city’s Alternative Housing program, created to temporarily shelter the city’s homeless population during the coronavirus pandemic.
It wasn’t long before the program turned into a “chaotic, horrible mess,” which Sandberg said was to be expected considering the homeless were given “everything from needles, to meth pipes, crack pipes, [and] foil to smoke fentanyl with.”
“It didn’t have to be that way,” Sandberg, a San Francisco native, explained. “In fact, what we could have done is use these hotels as sober places. They could have been places for recovery, [to address] mental health issues, but instead, it was the opposite. So it turned out to be a complete disaster.”
Sandberg blamed city officials for what she described as their their “we know better” approach.
“You make sure that people can do these substances that are already ruining their lives just to keep them at the hotel room and far away from the general population, what’s going to happen?” she said. “I mean, the answer is so obvious.
“It was the city leaders, the officials, the … supervisors who kind of came in and said, ‘We know better. We are going to do this and it’s going to work out great.’ Well, guess what? It didn’t. “
The failed program was suspended following Saturday’s arrest, according to Sandberg, “and the city has kind of drawn back on its contract.”

The Lebanese people are demanding answers as rescue teams pulled more bodies from the rubble of Beirut’s port on Friday, nearly three days after a massive explosion sent a wave of destruction through the capital.
More than 300,000 people were displaced, nearly 150 killed and thousands were wounded.
The Lebanese people want to know why 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate, a chemical used for explosives and fertilizer, were sitting in the port, with clashes overnight in front of the parliament building in Beirut, which looks like a war zone.
“It’s unclear right now what exactly caused this explosion,” Fox News Channel’s foreign correspondent Trey Yingst told “Fox & Friends” Friday, noting that Pentagon officials have said they do not believe this was any sort of outside incident and looks to be an accident.
“You see a lot of Lebanese officials today trying to put the blame on others,” added Yingst, who is based in Jerusalem. “No one wants to be responsible for the tragedy that unfolded.”
An investigation has been started by the government, which has come under mounting criticism after many Lebanese blamed the catastrophe on negligence and corruption.
French and Russian rescue teams with dogs continued to search the port area on Friday, a day after French President Emmanuel Macron visited the site.
“People are emotionally destroyed, even if they’re physically OK, they’re emotionally destroyed but coming to such areas where the explosion happened and seeing all these people helping was… it warms the heart and makes us have a little bit of hope again,” one woman, whose apartment owner died in the incident, shared with Fox News.

The investigation is focusing on port and customs officials, with 16 employees detained and others questioned. But many Lebanese say the responsibilty extends to the country’s top leaders.
Amid a severe economic crisis, massive unemployment and the coronavirus pandemic, the capital was already struggling before the blast.
Macron said France, which has close ties to its former colony, would lead international efforts to provide aid but would not give “blank checks to a system that no longer has the trust of its people.” He said France is sending a team of 22 investigators to help probe the blast.
The U.N. human rights office is calling for an independent investigation, insisting “victims’ calls for accountability must be heard.”
Lebanon is facing the “triple tragedy of the socio-economic crisis, COVID-19 and the ammonium nitrate explosion,” Rupert Colville, a spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said, urging Lebanese leaders to “overcome political stalemates and address the grievances of the population.”

“Reporter Nina Kapur joined the team in June 2019 and was known for her contagious smile and love for storytelling,” the station shared. She died at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after the accident, the station reported, adding, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Nina’s family. She will be missed.”
Before joining CBS New York as an on air reporter, Kapur had worked at News 12 Connecticut since 2017. “News 12 staff members are remembering Kapur for her incredible work ethic, as well as her sense of humor and smile,” a statement from the station said.

Fellow journalists expressed their grief following the young and promising reporter’s death.
CBS New York’s John Dias wrote over the weekend that he was “finding it hard to report.”
“Pulling myself together because I know @ninakapur1 wouldn’t want me to fall apart. She was a true angel on earth, and now she is a real one in heaven. Love you, Nina! RIP. @CBSNewYork and the world lost one of its best,” he wrote.
“We will miss your smile, your warmth, your presence. Rest In Peace young lady,” wrote CBS New York’s Chris Wragge.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Daniel Lewis Lee, a condemned man and convicted murderer, was asked if he wanted to make a final statement from the execution chamber, with its institutional green-tiled walls and plate-glass interior window, moments before he too would die.
He did. He leaned his head up and we locked eyes.
“You’re killing an innocent man,” Lee said, looking directly at me.
Those were his last words. He said them to me.
Lee’s execution, one of two that I witnessed this past week at the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute, Indiana, played out slowly, after painstaking hours of final, futile legal appeals, before prison officials administered a lethal injection and the federal government carried out capital punishment for the first time in almost two decades. A third execution came later in the week.
Before the lethal injection for Lee, there had been a lot of waiting. Prison officials searched me extensively each time I arrived, then sent me back to my hotel during the legal maneuvering, only to call me back to the maximum-security facility.
As part of a small group of other reporters, I was an official witness to Lee’s death, one that took place in the middle of a pandemic.
Lee, who was convicted of killing an Arkansas gun dealer, his wife and young daughter in the late 1990s, was scheduled to be executed Monday at 4 p.m. EDT.
But there would be a long wait as his legal appeals made their way to the Supreme Court. Along with other reporters, I was lodged inside a former bowling alley that was now a prison staff training center. It was guarded by heavily armed prison officers. We were all wearing blue surgical masks. Our temperatures were taken.

We were brought into a small witness room. There were plastic chairs facing the window, a notepad, a pen, small bottle of hand sanitizer and a single sanitizing wipe on each seat. A correction officer pulled the large metal door closed and a booming click echoed through the room. We were locked in.
The curtain was shut, but I could hear noises coming from the other side of the wall. We couldn’t make small talk. A man, albeit a convicted murderer, who was supposed to die soon could probably hear us.
We were all uncomfortable. A reporter next to me scribbled “legal issue?” on his notepad and gestured to me. “I guess so,” I replied.
There was no clock in the room. We lost track of how long we had been in there. Eventually someone asked if anyone knew what time it was. When a correction officer replied it was 6:10 a.m., there was a collective gasp of surprise.
At 7:46 a.m. the curtain began to rise slowly. By that time we’d been locked in the room with Lee just on the other side of the glass, strapped in, for nearly four hours.
There he was. His arms were strapped down and a light blue sheet covered most of his body. I was annoyed with one of the reporters who was moving around vying for a better view. Of a man’s death. It bothered me somehow, even though we were all there.
A U.S. marshal inside the room with Lee picked up a black phone hanging on the green tiled wall.
“This is the marshal inside the execution chamber,” he said. Washington headquarters was on the other end. The marshal asked if there were any legal impediments that would prohibit the execution. He listened, then said, “I understand there are no impediments.”
And then Lee said those last words, looking right at me.
He rested his head back down and the drug quickly did its deadly work. His lips turned blue. His chest stopped moving. He was pronounced dead.
I rushed back to my computer and filed my story.
It wouldn’t sink in until later that I had just watched a man die. My face was one of the last he saw. I’ve been a crime reporter for years, but this felt different. It was clinical. It was like watching someone go to sleep.
And there wasn’t much time to dwell on the experience, because another execution was scheduled for the next day.

Wesley Ira Purkey was convicted of kidnapping a 16-year-old girl from her Kansas neighborhood, raping and killing her in the late 1990s and also killing an 80-year-old.
But his time to die too was already delayed well into the evening. We arrived at the staff training center at 4 p.m. But this time we weren’t allowed to leave.
As the hours ticked by, everyone became more anxious, at times pacing in circles.
By 10 p.m., the Bureau of Prisons officials offered us peanuts and chips. They didn’t want to let us go back to the hotels because it would take too long to bring us all back through security.
Just before midnight came more food — Lunchables, dug out from a prison fridge somewhere.
At 2:45 a.m. — about 11 hours after we arrived — we were told to leave our electronics and loaded back into the vans. This time we stopped just outside of the execution chamber.
And we sat there for five hours. I dozed off for a bit in my seat.
Eventually, after Purkey’s legal avenues were exhausted, we were brought into the witness room. The curtain rose at 7:55 a.m. We were again looking into the execution chamber. The same officials were standing beside Purkey, his arms strapped down with black restraints. He apologized to the family of the teenage girl he killed and to his own daughter.
“This sanitized murder really does not serve no purpose whatsoever,” he said. “Thank you.”

I glanced over at his spiritual adviser — a Zen Buddhist priest who had sued the Bureau of Prisons to try to stop the execution because of fears over the coronavirus. He was wearing a mask under a face shield and appeared to be praying. I wondered if he was afraid he’d get the virus. I wondered if I would get the virus.
A few minutes later, Purkey was declared dead. The curtain came down.
In one week, I had spent more than 32 hours inside a prison. And watched two men die.

“They are not just horrified, they are traumatized by what they see. You have mattresses that have feces on them, blood, hospital bands on the floor. What people are seeing is so horrible that they walk out and they say, ‘I don’t want to go back in there.'”

ESPN suspended NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski a day after a profane email from him to Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., was leaked to social media, according to multiple reports.
Outkick and the New York Post both reported that the basketball reporter was suspended. The newspaper reported he was suspended without pay. It was unclear how long the suspension is for.
The incident occurred after Hawley’s office sent a news release detailing a letter he planned to send NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, criticizing the league’s decision to limit messages players can wear on their uniforms to “pre-approved, social justice slogans” while “censoring support” for law enforcement and criticism of the Chinese Communist Party.
Hawley wrote in the letter to Silver that the league’s “free expression appears to stop at the edge of your corporate sponsors’ sensibilities.”
Wojnarowski, who is arguably ESPN’s most prominent reporter and breaks so much NBA news on Twitter that his messages have been dubbed “Woj Bombs,” apparently didn’t appreciate Hawley’s message.
“F— you,” Wojnarowski responded, according to Hawley.
“Don’t criticize #China or express support for law enforcement to @espn. It makes them real mad,” Hawley tweeted with an apparent screenshot of the response.
The ESPN reporter did not censor his message, spelling out the four-letter word.
Wojnarowski did not immediately respond when asked for comment but apologized shortly after via Twitter.
“I was disrespectful and I made a regrettable mistake. I am sorry for the way I handled myself and I am reaching out immediately to Senator Hawley to apologize directly,” he wrote. The media world is mourning the death of popular Daily Caller gossip columnist Betsy Rothstein, who lost a long battle with cancer on Sunday — but a CNN reporter came under fire for oddly claiming that almost “everyone mourning her online” is white.
Rothstein was a beloved figure in Washington, D.C. media circles, with friends on all sides of the political spectrum. Fox News’ Tucker Carlson called her “the most honest person I’ve ever met,” while New York magazine’s Olivia Nuzzi penned a tribute to her friend.
CNN reporter Nathan McDermott, part of the liberal network’s K-FILE investigative unit, shocked media peers when he attempted to politicize Rothstein’s death on Monday night.

“I didn’t know Betsy Rothstein and only read her occasionally, and I am sad that she passed away, but there’s clearly a divide in values political journalists hold when (almost) everybody mourning her online is a white reporter who covers DC,” McDermott wrote.
“And I do appreciate the irony that occurs when provocateurs who disdain sanctimony die and people get outraged when you don’t say they were perfect,” McDermott added in a follow-up tweet.
McDermott was immediately criticized on Twitter for the remarks. Many of Rothstein’s friends and colleagues used colorful language to express how they felt. The Daily Caller told the CNN reporter to “do us all a favor and log off forever,” while others expressed disbelief.
CNN executive Matt Dornic even responded on Twitter that he “doesn’t support” McDermott’s tweet.
“I’m grieving my friend right now. All I’m asking is that you don’t generalize it as a CNN position,” Dornic wrote. He also wrote a tribute to Rothstein in CNN’s media newsletter, calling her “fearless, fanatical and funny” while noting that D.C. “feels a lot darker” without her.
CNN did not immediately respond to a request for comment on McDermott’s tweet.
