A HIV-positive man in remission may be the first patient effectively cured of the illness without needing a bone marrow transplant, researchers said Tuesday in a potential breakthrough.
HIV affects tens of millions of people globally and while the disease is no longer the automatic death sentence it once was, patients need to take medication for life.
In recent years two men – known as the “Berlin” and “London” patients – appear to have been cured of the disease after undergoing high-risk stem cell bone marrow transplants to treat cancer.
Now an international team of researchers believe they may have a third patient who no longer shows sign of infection after undergoing a different medicine regimen.
The patient, a 34-year-old Brazilian who has not been named, was diagnosed with HIV in 2012.
As part of the study, he was given several potent antiviral drugs, including maraviroc and dolutegravir, to see if they could help him rid the virus from his body.
He has now gone more than 57 weeks with no HIV treatment and he continues to test negative for HIV antibodies.
Ricardo Diaz, an infectious diseases expert at the University of Sao Paulo, said the patient could be considered to be free of the disease.
“The significance for me is that we had a patient that was on treatment and he is now controlling the virus without treatment,” he told AFP.
“We’re not able to detect the virus and he’s losing the specific response to the virus – if you don’t have antibodies then you don’t have antigens.”
‘Provocative’ findings
Diaz’s findings were released as part of the first-ever all-virtual International AIDS Conference, held online this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The United Nations said Monday that 1.7 million people contracted HIV last year and there are now more than 40 million people living with it.
Diaz said his team’s treatment method, which needs further research, was a more ethical avenue for gravely ill HIV sufferers than the bone-marrow transplant route.
“They come with a high mortality rate, there have been a series of patients who have either died from the procedures or it didn’t work,” he said.
Sharon Lewin, co-Chair of the International AIDS Society Initiative Towards an HIV Cure and director of the Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne, said Diaz’s findings were “very interesting”.
She struck a note of caution however, due to the study’s limitations.
She noted that the Brazil patients’ antibody test had gotten weaker over time – suggesting a diminishing immune response.
“This is very unusual to see in someone off antivirals,” she said.
“The Berlin and London Patients may be the only exceptions. This very provocative data needs more in-depth analysis.”

CNN reported that Trump said he plans to issue the executive order to prevent further removal or defacement of statues, and it’s unclear if his earlier Tuesday tweets contain the substance of what will be included in the executive order.
In his tweets, Trump vowed to arrest “anyone who vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such Federal property in the US with up to 10 years in prison, per the Veteran’s Memorial Preservation Act.”
Trump added that his authorization is “effective immediately” but also can be applied “retroactively” to cover other monuments toppled in recent weeks.

]]>Joe Biden‘s Democratic presidential campaign is reportedly going to great lengths to insist his team of economic policy advisers not publicly discuss their roles, fueling concerns that these advisers may not be appropriately disclosing their relationship to the former vice president while making television appearances.
The New York Times on Thursday reported that the campaign has “imposed strict rules to ensure their public silence.” Republicans have sounded alarms about these efforts.
Kevin Hassett, a senior adviser to President Trump and former chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, argued this policy means Biden is allowing economists to hide ties to him and appear on television to discuss policy — reciting Biden talking points without disclosure to viewers.
“It is unethical to formally advise a candidate and publicly advocate the candidate’s views while concealing that relationship,” Hassett told the paper. “If he does have an economic team, then he should identify them. If he doesn’t identify them, then the advisers should, at the very least, identify themselves as Biden supporters when appearing in the media.”
BIDEN SAYS TRUMP WILL ATTEMPT TO ‘STEAL’ THE ELECTION
Asked about the campaign policy, the Biden campaign took a shot at Trump’s handling of the economy and record on public disclosure.
“Dr. Hassett and his boss should both spend less time griping over cable news coverage and more time trying to fix this mess they got us into,” Andrew Bates, a Biden spokesman, told the New York Times. “If they want to talk about transparency, they can feel free to release Donald Trump’s tax returns any day.”
The Biden campaign did not respond to Fox News’ request for comment, and neither did Hassett.
President Trump has an in-house team of advisers, but also consults with Wall Street executives and other friends in private.
According to the Times, Biden has formed a committee to seek input from more than 100 left-leaning economists and researchers, but it’s unclear who many of them are and who has real sway with the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Policy experts close to the campaign said Biden relies on a core group of advisers who roughly match his ideological stance, which has swayed to the left since the election of the Obama-Biden administration in 2008.
In a memo to the economic committee, the Biden campaign warned participants not to refer to “the candidate or the campaign” in documents.
“You are not to disclose the names of others who are involved in the committee to nonmembers,” the memo said.
Members of the committee could tell friends or family of their involvement but were not to disclose their role on social media or add it to their LinkedIn bio, the paper said.
Another section advises the private economic council against talking to the media. “Simply put, do not talk to the press,” it reads.
“You are welcome to express yourself in blog or social media posts, letters to the editor, op-eds, emails, etc.,” the memo said. “You may identify yourself as a ‘volunteer’ or ‘supporter’ of the campaign but make clear that the views you express are your own.”
Gabriel Zucman, who helped draw up Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s proposed wealth tax, referred a reporter who asked about his ties to the Biden team to an email address with Biden’s press office. It was the same address campaign officials had told members of the new economic policy committee to give to reporters when asked about their ties to Biden.

The campaign did confirm to the Times receiving regular briefings from three economists entrenched in the Democratic party’s Washington establishment– Jared Bernstein and Ben Harris, chief economists for Biden during his time in the White House, and Heather Boushey, top economist for Hillary Clinton’s transition team during her 2016 run for the presidency.

]]>New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham reportedly made a purchase from a retail jewelry store last month, at the same time she ordered many industries to temporarily close following her statewide public health order.
Grisham, a Democrat, stressed in April that New Mexicans needed to stay home and should only leave to purchase essential items such as food and medical supplies, KRQE-TV reported.
“We are in really tough financial times as a state. It mirrors the incredible, personal sacrifices that happen every single day because people have limited their ability to work, telecommuting and many people, in fact, have lost their jobs,” she said April 3.

Days after her remarks, however, she called an employee at the Lilly Barrack jewelry shop in Albuquerque — where she has a longstanding relationship — to make a purchase over the phone, the news station reported.
No one was allowed in the store at the time because of the public health order.
Grisham spokeswoman Nora Meyers Sackett told the Albuquerque Journal that the transaction complied with the governor’s emergency public health order at the time and that she didn’t receive special treatment. A friend of Grisham’s picked up the purchased items left outside the jewelry store employee’s home, the spokeswoman said.

“There were no state guidelines broken,” Sackett said. “It was an entirely contact-free purchase.”
Curbside pickup outside stores wasn’t allowed in the state until May 1. Messages to Grisham’s office from Fox News were not immediately returned.
Republican state lawmakers accused Grisham of hypocrisy for not following her own orders.
“Our Governor is the latest Democrat to decide that the rules they impose on their citizens to address the COVID-19 pandemic don’t apply to her,” the New Mexico Republican Party tweeted Wednesday. “A bombshell report reveals that the governor violated her own stay-at-home order to stock up on some high-end jewelry.”
“The store was never ‘opened’ and a good safe process was followed. … The governor has, of course, in both her personal and professional lives adhered to all of the public health measures the state has enacted for the duration of this pandemic,” Sackett said.
Other jewelry store owners told KRQE that they didn’t allow anyone inside the business for fear of getting fined. One noted that they were under the impression that only online sales were allowed.
“Of course the governor has been telling people to stay home to the greatest extent possible, it’s also true she’s been urging New Mexicans to find ways to support local businesses,” Grisham’s office said, noting that the transaction was unusual.
Grisham and state Senate Republicans have clashed in recent weeks over the reopening of the state. She accused the GOP lawmakers earlier this month of “utter failure and unflinching surrender to the virus ravaging our communities, your communities, and those you represent whether you believe in the danger of this disease or not.”

On Wednesday, restaurants in most of the state were allowed to provide limited outdoor or patio service at up to 50 percent occupancy, and retail stores are allowed to operate at 25 percent capacity.
“I greatly look forward to being able to continue to ease the restrictions imposed on us by this heinous virus — provided that we continue on the right track and New Mexicans take every necessary precaution, whether in an individual capacity or as a business owner or employee,” Grisham tweeted Tuesday.

]]>As President Trump and the rest of the country grapple with an economic downturn and sky-high unemployment rates amid the coronavirus crisis, some Democrats reportedly worry that an explosive economic recovery in the fall could revive Trump’s lagging political fortunes — and boost his chance at reelection.
Politico reports that Jason Furman, a top economist in the Obama administration and now a Harvard professor, told a bipartisan group of policymakers last month that “We are about to see the best economic data we’ve seen in the history of this country.”
TRUMP SLAMS BIDEN AD CRITICAL OF GOLF OUTING
The claims may seem counterintuitive amid the bleak economic picture right now. But it’s premised on assumptions that as lockdowns ease, a recovery could follow more quickly than after past economic crises. Since his earlier prediction, Furman has reportedly also been making the case to Democrats, including top members of presumptive nominee Joe Biden’s campaign.
“This is my big worry,” a former Obama White House official told the outlet, who said of the concern about top members of the party: “It’s high — high, high, high, high.”
Polls have shown Trump trailing Biden nationally, which can in part be attributed to the considerable economic downturn due to the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown response in large parts of the country. A recent Fox News poll showed Biden with an 8-point lead.
But while an economy with an unemployment rate above 14 percent and rising could normally be expected to doom an incumbent in a general election, there are signs that the economy could begin to dramatically swing back as the election approaches and lockdown measures subside.
Furman’s theory is that the current downturn is closer to those that accompany a natural disaster — such drop-offs tend to be sharp, but also are followed by a sharp rebound. He has said there could be a “very fast” rebound as people get back to their jobs and furloughs end.

“Given how many people were furloughed and how many businesses were closed you can get a big jump out of that. It will look like a V,” he told Politico.
It’s similar to predictions made by the White House — President Trump said earlier this month: “I think you’re going to have a ‘V’ — I think it’s going to be terrific.”
Meanwhile an informal Biden adviser told Politico that top campaign officials are preparing for an economic debate in the fall that could include a surging recovery. And the Biden campaign indicated it understands the challenge.
“The way that Biden talks about the economy is not just tied to the COVID crisis, it’s also about the things that Donald Trump has done to undermine working people since the day he took office,” Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s deputy campaign manager, told the outlet. “But secondly, it’s also highly likely that under any economic circumstances in the fall, Trump is likely going to be the first modern president to preside over net job loss.”

- When de Blasio shared the order’s text with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the governor reportedly derided it and said that the term “shelter in place” sounded “like it was a response to a nuclear apocalypse.”

San Francisco was initially expected to become the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the US, as it was geographically positioned closer to China, where the disease was first discovered.
But San Francisco and other Bay Area counties, as well as the entire state of California, acted early and issued stay-at-home orders on March 17 and 19, respectively. The quick action has earned the west coast region national praise for stemming the spread of the disease.
New York, on the other hand, has instead become the epicenter of the US outbreak, with the majority of reported cases in New York City. And a new ProPublica report explores how both San Francisco and New York City responded to the disease.
According to the report, San Francisco Mayor London Breed was more receptive to advice from public health experts than was New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. Breed issued a local emergency order after the first confirmed case was found in San Francisco. New York had 100 reported cases before de Blasio followed suit.
And Breed reportedly sent a copy of the shelter-in-place order that went into effect on March 17 to de Blasio in case it could be of use. When de Blasio shared the order with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the governor reportedly derided the order and said that the term “shelter in place” sounded “like it was a response to a nuclear apocalypse” and would scare people.
Cuomo also reportedly questioned whether it was within de Blasio’s jurisdiction to even issue a stay-at-home order.
“No city in the state can quarantine itself without state approval,” Cuomo reportedly said. “I have no plan whatsoever to quarantine any city.”
But he did, however, eventually lock down not just New York City but the entire state on March 22, just five days after the San Francisco Bay Area officially entered its own.
It’s worth noting that New York City is the country’s most populous and densest, while San Francisco is the second densest and 13th most populous.
But that five-day delay is likely a contributing factor as to why New York City has been one of the hardest-hit cities in the nation and why San Francisco’s infection count has remained lower. Experts were quoted in a New York Times article in April saying that their research showed a much lower death toll for the state had officials acted a week or two sooner. And the former head of New York City’s Health Department, Dr. Tom Frieden, echoed that conclusion in a tweet in April, as ProPublica notes. “Days earlier & so many deaths could have been prevented,” Frieden posted.
There are currently nearly 190,000 reported confirmed cases in New York City, with more than 20,000 reported deaths. San Francisco has 2,091 confirmed cases and 36 reported deaths.
New York State has almost 350,000 confirmed cases, with nearly 28,000 reported deaths. California, by comparison, has 76,000 confirmed cases and 3,200 reported deaths.
The ProPublica report notes that Cuomo has since said he wishes he would have responded more quickly to the coronavirus. It also points out that both Cuomo and de Blasio are now extremely cautious about phased reopening plans for New York City because of the magnitude of its outbreak.

]]>The Biden campaign reportedly is relying on a New York Times report in talking points being circulated to combat the explosive sexual assault allegation made by the candidate’s former Senate staffer, Tara Reade.
BuzzFeed News reported on Tuesday that despite strong denials the campaign has issued to various media outlets, aides for former Vice President Joe Biden are taking Reade “seriously enough behind the scenes to coordinate messaging among other Democrats to try to cast the matter as one that’s been thoroughly vetted and determined to be unfounded.”
The “talking points” reportedly read, “Biden believes that all women have the right to be heard and to have their claims thoroughly reviewed In this case, a thorough review by the New York Times has led to the truth: this incident did not happen.”
WASHINGTON POST BLASTED FOR CLAIMING ‘TRUMP ALLIES’ ARE ‘AMPLIFYING’ BIDEN ACCUSER TARA READE
According to the copies BuzzFeed News obtained from two individual Democratic operatives, the talking points continue, “Here’s the bottom line. Vice President Joe Biden has spent over 40 years in public life: 36 years in the Senate; 7 Senate campaigns, 2 previous presidential runs, two vice presidential campaigns, and 8 years in the White House. There has never been a complaint, allegation, hint or rumor of any impropriety or inappropriate conduct like this regarding him — ever.”
Biden himself has yet to be asked about the allegations.
However, two prominent Democrats who are apparently on Biden’s shortlist of VP picks have indeed cited the Times’ reporting in their defense of the presumptive Democratic nominee: former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.
“I believe women deserve to be heard, and I believe that has happened here. The allegations have been heard and looked into, and for too many women, often, that is not the case. The New York Times conducted a thorough investigation, and nothing in the Times review or any other later reports suggests anything other than what I already know about Joe Biden: That he will make women proud as the next President of the United States,” Abrams said in a statement to the Huffington Post earlier on Tuesday.
She offered similar remarks during an interview Tuesday night, repeatedly citing the Times’ reporting to CNN’s Don Lemon.
JOE BIDEN SUPPORTER ALYSSA MILANO CHANGES TUNE ON HIS ACCUSER TARA READE AMID NEW DEVELOPMENTS
Klobuchar, too, cited the Times during an April 17 interview on MSNBC.
“He has said, and I agree with this, you’ve got to get to the bottom of every case and all allegations. I think The New York Times — I haven’t read all the stories. I read that one. Your viewers should read that,” Klobuchar told MSNBC anchor Ari Melber. “It was very thorough. They interviewed people. And I have done a lot of work on this. I actually led the effort to change the rules in the U.S. Senate so that it is easier to bring these cases forward and so that we have taxpayers not paying for bad conduct.
“I think this case has been investigated. I know the vice president as a major leader on domestic abuse, I worked with him on that. And I think that, again, the viewers should read the article. It was very thorough.”
Neither Abrams nor Klobuchar immediately responded to Fox News’ requests for comments. Fox News also reached out to the Biden campaign and The New York Times for comment.

The Times report, however, did not reach a definitive conclusion on the allegations other than to say there was no “pattern” of misconduct. Rather, it reported that aides Reade purportedly complained to either did not recall the allegations or denied them. Yet a friend reportedly confirmed Reade described “details of the allegation at the time,” and another friend and Reade’s brother said she had described a “traumatic sexual incident involving Mr. Biden,” the article said.
Major developments have also happened since the Times report, which ran on the morning of Easter Sunday nearly three weeks after Reade came forward with her claims, that further support Reade’s 1993 claims.
A “Larry King Live” clip from 1993 emerged Friday purportedly showing Reade’s mother calling into the show anonymously and alluding to her daughter’s “problems” with a “prominent senator.” And on Monday, two more people, a former neighbor and a former colleague of Reade’s, came forward to back her claims after conversations they had back in the 90s.
Times executive editor Dean Baquet defended his paper’s reporting on the Biden accuser and even suggested that the Biden campaign urged the Times to change some of the language that was written in the report, which sparked a backlash on social media.
“I want to ask about some edits that were made after publication, the deletion of the second half of the sentence… Why did you do that?” Times columnist Ben Smith asked his boss.
“Even though a lot of us, including me, had looked at it before the story went into the paper, I think that the campaign thought that the phrasing was awkward and made it look like there were other instances in which he had been accused of sexual misconduct, and that’s not what the sentence was intended to say,” Baquet responded.
“Why not explain that?” Smith followed.
“We didn’t think it was a factual mistake,” Baquet replied. “I thought it was an awkward phrasing issue that could be read different ways and that it wasn’t something factual we were correcting. So, I didn’t think that was necessary.”

The Times raised eyebrows after it deleted a tweet and tweaked its report about the 1993 accusation, which originally read, “No other allegation about sexual assault surfaced in the course of reporting, nor did any former Biden staff members corroborate any details of Ms. Reade’s allegation. The Times found no pattern of sexual misconduct by Mr. Biden, beyond the hugs, kisses and touching that women previously said made them uncomfortable.”
The edited version chopped off the latter section about “hugs, kisses and touching.”
No correction or editor’s note was made in the report but the Times later explained the deleted tweet, saying, “We’ve deleted a tweet in this thread that had some imprecise language that has been changed in the story.”
