]]>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats have frequently accused President Trump of not taking the coronavirus pandemic seriously enough — particularly when it first it the U.S. — but when confronted with her own comments that appeared to take COVID-19 lightly, Pelosi insisted that she did not downplay it at all.
On CNN‘s “State of the Union” Sunday, host Dana Bash recalled that on Feb. 29, Pelosi said that “there are no indications of widespread infections in the United States,” but the House speaker insisted that she did not underestimate the crisis.
“No, what we did was at that exact time was writing the first COVID bill, which we brought to the floor and passed on March 4, and it was about testing, testing, testing,” she said. “Because if you don’t test you don’t have a handle on what the problem is.”
When asked whether she had any regrets over her initial response to COVID-19, Pelosi firmly said she had none, then took the opportunity to accuse Trump of giving the wrong messages.
“No, not at all. We had had four bills, all bipartisan, but they have not been implemented by the administration,” she said. “And no, we said testing from March 4. We were writing the bill to find out what the threat was to us while the president was saying delay, denial, calling it a hoax, and causing deaths.”
Trump has criticized Pelosi as well, noting that in late February she encouraged people to go out in public in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
“It’s exciting to be here, especially at this time, to be able to be unified with our community,” Pelosi told reporters. “We want to be vigilant about what is out there in other places. We want to be careful about how we deal with it, but we do want to say to people ‘Come to Chinatown, here we are — we’re, again, careful, safe — and come join us.’”
That happened the same day that the White House submitted a request to Congress for $2.5 billion in supplemental spending to help combat the coronavirus.

]]>The family of a Lake Elsinore man says he died of COVID-19 after going to a party and becoming infected, and he even posted about feeling sick on social media, saying he regretted going to the gathering.
Tommy Macias went to a party with friends a few weeks ago, then he got a phone call from one of those friends saying he tested positive for COVID19, and everyone should get tested.
Just days later, Macias died in the hospital.
Laughing and being goofy is how the family of Macias says they want to remember him.
“He was just a fun loving person. He loved to pick on people. He loved to crack jokes about everything,” said his niece, Danielle Lopez.
Her uncle posted on Facebook days before his death saying he contracted the coronavirus after going out and he worried about putting the rest of his family’s health in jeopardy.
The 51-year-old attended a party in Lake Elsinore after quarantining for months.
“It was just one moment for him. Because things were becoming so much more lenient, he hadn’t seen his friends for so long, he thought things were getting better and he decided to go see them and so quickly he was taken from us,” she said.
Macias started feeling sick and thought it was issues with his diabetes, but last Sunday he had breathing trouble and was rushed to the hospital.
He was intubated, and put on a ventilator, but died two hours later.
“We wish we could have told him how much we love him. And to be able to say goodbye,” Lopez said.
As coronavirus cases keep going up and many counties make adjustments to the reopening process, Lopez said she wants everyone to know how devastating the virus can really be.
“You can’t just assume you’re OK. You need to take that extra precaution to protect everyone around you. It just seems like it should be common sense and common courtesy to not unknowingly cause this harm onto other people,” she said.

]]>“Real Time” host Bill Maher looked back with apparent regret Friday night on the Democratic-led impeachment of President Trump, saying it “turned out to be a horrible thing.”
During a conversation with liberal filmmaker Michael Moore, Maher pointed to Trump’s recent firings of inspectors general, most recently the ousting of State Department watchdog Steve Linick, and complained the firings got very little media attention amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Moore then pivoted the conversation to the Russia investigation — claiming Trump “bullied” former Special Counsel Robert Mueller, and insisting Mueller “got scared” and refused to interrogate the president.

Maher, however, brought the conversation back to the Ukraine scandal, which led to Trump’s impeachment because the president was accused of withholding foreign aid in hopes of persuading Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

“Just the impeachment, you know, I mean, if I could do it over again I wouldn’t because it just emboldened him,” Maher continued, “Now he can conduct this war on accountability and nobody even — it barely made the papers. I bet you people are watching this and going, ‘Wow, I’ve never heard that because the news is all COVID.”
Moore agreed, saying that the removals of the government watchdogs make the president “very dangerous.”
