Nearly one in five new coronavirus cases detected from Aug. 2 to Sept. 2 can be traced back to the Sturgis motorcycle rally in South Dakota, according to a new academic study that drew a withering denunciation from the state’s governor.
Researchers at the Center for health Economics & Policy Studies at San Diego State University used anonymized cell phone data to track the nearly 500,000 attendees at the gathering this year, then looked at what counties they returned to and calculated the rise in positive COVID-19 tests compared to counties that didn’t send as many people.
They concluded there was a surge of cases locally, statewide, and even nationally, where they said more than 250,000 additional cases were attributable to Sturgis. That’s 19% of the 1.4 million new cases in the U.S. during the period they reviewed.
They labeled the gathering “a super-spreader event,” and blamed the state and local officials for failing to impose restrictions.
They also put a total public health cost for the rally at $12.2 billion.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem blasted the study as faulty modeling “nonsense,” and pointed out the research paper has not yet been peer reviewed.
“This report isn’t science; it’s fiction,” she said. “Under the guise of academic research, this report is nothing short of an attack on those who exercised their personal freedom to attend Sturgis.”
She said modeling at one point predicted her state alone would peak at 10,000 hospitalizations due to COVID-19.
“Today, we have less than 70,” she said.
The ability of mass gatherings to be virus-spreading events has been heatedly debated. Some politicians are pushing for an overhaul of how elections are conducted out of fear that polling places spread the disease — but mass racial justice rallies are also taking place, with some researchers saying they see no significant increase in cases due to those gatherings.
Sturgis had drawn extraordinary scrutiny, with debates breaking out on cable news over whether it should have been allowed to go forward.
The researchers said the rally could be a reason for localities to impose their own stiffer restrictions on people returning from those kinds of events.

Toledo Lucas County Health Commissioner Eric Zgodzinski says some of those cases have been caused by people disregarding safety measures.
“Over the last two weeks, we’ve had some issues with individuals who knew they were sick or who were exposed to a family member going out and not adhering to quarantine guidelines.”
It’s actions like this, Zgodzinski says there are inexcusably driving our COVID cases up. “I want to make sure that people understand that when we call and we say you need to be quarantined, you need to be isolated that you stay there and do what’s asked of you for those 14 days.”
The decision to move Lucas County into the red warning zone is based on cases per-capita. Zgodzinski says we’re close to that. “I will say that we’re trending in the number of cases. Over the last week, following the May 25 police custody killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, communities nationwide have faced calls from critics to disband police agencies or redirect funding from law enforcement operations to community development programs.
Detroit, according to a report, has seen this decade an uptick in crime because of defunding the city’s police department.
The city cut back its police force and funding during a historic bankruptcy in 2014. Funding for the police department has fallen 20 percent in the last six years. Starting salary is $40,000 a year. Wages for cops were cut 10 percent and have never recovered, accounting for inflation. Health benefits for retired cops were stopped and pension payments postponed.
The department didn’t immediately return Fox News’ email and phone requests for comment.

Supporters say the “defund the police” movement isn’t about eliminating police departments or stripping agencies of all of their money. They say it is time for the country to address systemic problems in policing in America and spend more on what communities across the U.S. need, like housing and education.
State and local governments spent $115 billion on policing in 2017, according to data compiled by the Urban Institute.
But in Detroit, gutting police department budgets has helped a downward spiral.
“We don’t have enough police as it is,” said Rochelle Jones, a working mother of two. “People are acting the fool out here, and now you know the police aren’t going to be coming around this summer with all that’s going on. So what are the children supposed to do.”

During 80 days of the coronavirus lockdown, 18 children were shot in Detroit.
In the city, there have been 100 homicides so far this year, a 25 percent spike over last year, and there have been 271 non-fatal shootings, an increase of 30 percent.

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — Boulder County health officials said 17 new COVID-19 cases were reported within three days last week.
Officials didn’t release an exact number, but said many of those who tested positive attended parties in the Hill neighborhood between May 25 and June 4, and a protest march in Boulder on June 5.
Health officials said anyone who attended a party in the Hill neighborhood or the protest march during those dates should immediately quarantine for 14 days, monitor for symptoms and get a COVID-19 test.
Some of the people recently diagnosed reported ill household members and having recently traveled, according to a Boulder County Public Health news release.
“It’s so important that anyone who was at these events take these steps to stop the spread to others,” said Carol Helwig, Boulder County Public Health Communicable Disease Control program manager. “This is exactly how the virus quickly gets out of control. Anyone who had a known exposure at one of these events should quarantine for 14 days following the exposure to avoid spreading illness to others in our community.”
People who were exposed should seek testing as soon as symptoms develop. Anyone who may have been exposed but does not yet have symptoms should consider testing approximately seven days after exposure, which may detect pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic infections, health officials said.
Health officials said house parties with more than 10 people who don’t share a house are prohibited by the state’s public health order.
“This behavior demonstrates disregard for the larger community that has worked so hard to control this virus,” said Jeff Zayach, Boulder County Public Health executive director. “It’s not just that this sort of gathering is a violation, but that it impacts everyone else – from the deadly risk of transmission to our older residents and people with health conditions, to the ability to keep businesses open.”
Each of the people that recently tested positive are in their late-teens and 20s, the news release says.
Boulder County health officials said their greatest number of cases continue to be among the 20-29 age group. While illness for people in this age group is generally mild, many who have become ill describe a painful, long illness and recovery, according to health officials.
“Young people likely understand the risks to themselves, and perhaps accept the risks,” Helwig said. “But, even if you don’t know an older person or anyone with a serious health condition, one could unknowingly put neighbors, co-workers, front-line workers, and other vulnerable people in our community in danger.”
Health officials said University of Colorado-Boulder students can be tested by Boulder Medical Services, and anyone who may have been exposed can be tested by their own health provider or be tested for free at the drive-up testing center at Pepsi Center in Denver.
