ANALYSIS

President Trump has been confronted with a series of false and unfounded conspiracy stories from the same liberal establishment that condemns the wild QAnon phenomenon, according to an analysis of the president’s nearly four years in office.

The press has lambasted the right-wing mystery persona of QAnon and its Internet-driven conspiracy theory that a cabal of Hollywood big-shots, Democrats and federal officials is involved in a pedophile ring determined to bring down the president.

The unfounded claims have captured the emotions of some conservatives. Mr. Trump hesitated at a press briefing to criticize the “Q” crowd even as Republican lawmakers roundly condemn its bizarre tales.

To be sure, Mr. Trump has stirred up the liberal media by sending out inflammatory tweets that bewilder even his conservative backers.

But at the same time, anti-QAnon liberals have embraced and promoted scores of Trump-deriding false stories and conspiracies. Some are bizarre, such as an international White House-based assassination scheme and a desire to exterminate Hispanics. Some are personal, such as “mini-strokes” and mental illness.

The Washington Times analyzed the left’s conspiracy culture and compiled a 35-item list (not all inclusive) dating back to Mr. Trump’s first day in office. Such stories fomented thousands of social media blogs and cable news.

The Times sources for this report: press stories; transcripts; social media posts.

Early Days

1. Mr. Trump removed a Martin Luther King bust from the Oval Office, a highly charged racial issue at the start. (Time Magazine on Inauguration Day).

Not true. The reporter apologized to White House later that day.

2. Day after the inauguration, the White House bused a “cheering committee” to the CIA for Trump’s talk to work force (CBS News).

The White House said that of 400 attendees,10 were White House-connected. None sat in first row.

3. Mr. Trump discussed the classified response to a North Korean missile test during large a dinner gathering at his Mar-a-Lago, Fla., estate with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Stories were based on a photograph of the dinner posted on Facebook. (New York Times. Feb. 13, 2017; CNN; Washington Post et al).

The White House said the press jumped to a “nefarious” conclusion. He was briefed in a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) about the missiles before dinner. The discussion at the table was about press logistics for next day.

4. The new president was somehow responsible for scores of bomb threats phoned to Jewish Community Centers in America. (Vox.com; CNN: “Trump mentioned the bomb threats in his speech Tuesday, but did not outline a plan to stop them.”)

In March 2017, authorities arrested an Israeli teenager, Michael Ron David Kadar, for making hundreds of hoax bomb threats to Jewish centers in the U.S. and other countries. They then stopped.

5. Muslim American Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad was detained at Dulles airport because of President Trump who put in place travel restrictions in January 2017. A Democratic congressman said he was “sickened” by the report. (Washington Post, The Hill, USA Today).

She was detained for two hours in December 2016 during the Obama administration.

6. The president is mentally ill. “Yes it’s Ok to question Trump’s mental health.” (CNN). “Avoiding questions about Trump’s mental health is a betrayal.” (Columbia Journalism Review.) “Pundits are beginning to question Trump’s Mental Health.” (Vanity Fair.) “California Democrats lead attack over Trump’s mental health.” (Politico.)

In January 2018, Mr. Trump’s annual physical included a cognitive test which the White House physician said he aced. Afterwards, some media reports said this didn’t prove he was not mentally ill

Russia

7. Mr. Trump is a Russian spy, asset, informant. (Democratic Party-funded dossier; various Democrats; James Clapper, President Obama’s top intelligence officer.)

No investigative report has concluded this.

8. U.S. intelligence possesses a large number of intercepted communications between the Trump campaign and Kremlin spies going back to the campaign’s beginning. (New York Times, Feb. 2017.)

FBI says it has no such material. Former FBI Director James Comey said the story was wrong.

9. The Trump campaign was in a deep conspiracy with the Kremlin to hack Democratic computers and wage information warfare on social media. (news media; Democrats; Christopher Steele/Democratic Party dossier).

Special Counsel Robert Mueller did not establish this during his 22-month investigation.

10. Dossier not disproven (Rachel Maddow, MSNBC; Sen. Diane Feinstein, California Democrat; et al.)

FBI lead agent Peter Strzok says the dossier is filled with inaccuracies and disinformation. He said the document sent him on “wild-goose chases.” Department of Justice inspector general report dismissed the dossier as unreliable.

11. Trump Organization maintained a secret dedicated computer server between Trump Tower and Alfa Bank, Russia’s largest commercial bank run by three oligarchs. (Dossier impresario and Democratic Party opposition researcher Fusion GPS; Slate.com.)

FBI concluded there was no such server.

12. Trump attorney Michael Cohen traveled to Prague in 2016 to meet Vladimir Putin’s staff and hand over cash to pay off hackers. (Dossier; Fusion GPS; McClatchy news service.)

FBI concluded no such trip happened.

13. Russia has laundered money through the Trump Organization. (Rep. Adam Schiff, California Democrat, citing “persistent allegations.”)

Mr. Cohen, a Trump detractor, told Congress he knows of no Russian money flowing into the organization. The Trump Organization has sold condominiums to relatively few Russians, including one group of criminals.

14. Russian money bailed out the Trump Organization in 1980s-90s. (former White House/Bill Clinton press secretary Joel Lockhart, CNN, May 2019.)

There has been no public evidence.

15. Trump aides and Sen. Jeff Sessions conspired with Russian ambassador at the Mayflower Hotel where the candidate delivered a foreign policy speech in April 2016. (NBC News; Washington Post; New York Times.)

Mueller report said no conspiracy talk at the Mayflower. There was a brief handshake reception line.

16. The FBI obtained a wiretap warrant on Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, assessing he was a foreign agent for Russia. (CNN).

No such warrant was sought.

17. Manafort and volunteer Carter Page worked as a team to conspire with Kremlin. (Dossier; Fusion GPS.)

The two did now know or speak with each other.

18. Manafort made repeated trips to London to consult with Wikileaks which published Russian-stolen Democratic emails. (Guardian newspaper, November 2018.)

The trips never happened. Mr. Mueller’s team didn’t even ask Manafort about the issue during hours of interrogation.

19. The dossier is true. Mueller’s team corroborated the claims against Mr. Trump and aides. (CNN; CBS News; MSNBC.

20. The Kremlin funneled cash to 2016 Trump campaign through the National Rifle Association. (McClatchy News service.)

No public evidence to date. The Washington Times first reported that the NRA supplied information to a Senate committee on an outside audit that found no such money trail.

21. The Kremlin’s social media propaganda was so successful it seeded inaccurate mainstream media stories helping candidate Trump. (Washington Post, Nov. 24, 2016.) The source was a group of shadowing research firms (one is called PropOrNot) that made unsubstantiated claims against various web sites.

The Post attached a correcting editor’s note to the story. The liberal Nation magazine said “‘PropOrNot’ has smeared working journalists as agents of the Kremlin while wrapping itself in a cloak of anonymity.”

22. Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Mr. Trump’s first national security adviser, maintained an improper relationship with the Kremlin. (Numerous press reports).

A secret Jan. 3, 2017 FBI memo, forced into the open by Attorney General William Barr, said agents found no improper contacts during a five-month counterintelligence investigation.

23. Flynn had some type of improper relationship with a Russian-born scholar at Cambridge University. (Wall Street Journal; other major U.S. newspapers).

Again, the FBI cleared him. The scholar, Svetlana Lokhova, a British citizen, says she met Flynn once at a dinner honoring the then-Defense Intelligence Agency director at Cambridge University, England. Never saw him again. In her suit, she blames FBI informant Stefan Halper for the smear.

24. Flynn “poss [sic] caught in FSB honeypot w/female Russian intel asset.” (Malcolm Nance, MSNBC analyst and retired Navy chief and intelligence expert., April 2017 tweet.)

FBI reported no evidence Ms. Lokhova is a Russian asset.

25. Billed as a “bombshell if true,” Mr. Trump told attorney Cohen to lie to Congress about aborted Moscow-Trump hotel deal.(BuzzFeed.)

Mr. Mueller’s office issued a statement rebutting the story.

26. 2018 election. “The Russians might this time actually play with the voting totals if there is a wave election and that would throw the entire election into doubt. And would essentially set the pace for civil war and that is what the Russians are looking for. Chaos is their principal weapon system here.” (Malcolm Nance, MSNBC.)

No evidence this happened.

27. Mr. Comey was fired by Mr. Trump after he asked for more funds to conduct Russia election probe. (Washington Post; New York Times).

His deputy director, Andrew McCabe, told a Senate committee there was no such request. The Department of Justice called stories “totally false.”

28. Mr. Trump talks on an open phone line so Russian President Vladimir Putin can listen in. (Andrew Weissmann, former Mueller prosecutor, MSNBC analyst.)

Assassins, and More

29. A secret Defense Intelligence Agency report delivered to the White House warned of a coronavirus outbreak in China in November 2019. (ABC News.)

The Pentagon says there is no such report.

30. Mr. Trump may kill off Hispanics. “He ramped it up again to the invasion, the warning people of the caravan and words like ‘infestation.’ What do you do with an infestation? With an infestation? The natural conclusion is to attempt extermination.” ( Raul Reyes, MSNBC contributor, August 2019.)

This has not happened.

31. White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, delivered a hit-list for assassinations to Saudi Arabia. (Rep. Joaquin Castro, Texas Democrat, and member of House Select Committee on Intelligence, October 2018.)

No evidence.

32. On Trump supporters: “The behaviors I’m seeing here, and this is anecdotal, are very similar to the way that ISIS members are. They are true believers, this is their reality, and they will not surrender it. You know, they’re dead-enders.” (Malcolm Nance, MSNBC.)

33. Mr. Trump is communicating subliminally with neo-Nazis. “These people feel that they are the foot soldiers executors of what the disenfranchisement that the white race is feeling and Donald Trump is giving them subliminal orders in their head.” (Malcolm Nance, MSNBC.)

34. Mr. Trump, a billionaire, has an interest in a French pharmaceutical firm Sanofil, which produces a brand name of hydroxychloroquine. (New York Times)

The president has taken HCQ and promoted it as a treatment for COVID-19. So have a number of physicians. Mr. Trump’s “assertiveness” in promoting the drug contrary to the recommendation of top health experts “has raised questions about his motives,” the New York Times April 2020 story said.

MarketWatch put Mr. Trump’s investment at less than $1,500. Forbes at less than $3,000.

35. Mr. Trump suffered a stroke or “mini strokes.” (CNN analyst Joel Lockhart; Author Don Winslow.)

Mr. Lockhart tweeted Aug. 1: “Did @realDonaldTrump have a stroke which he is hiding from the American public?”

Mr. Winslow tweeted Aug. 1: “One of the benefits of making videos that garner 5 million + views is that you hear from a lot of people, including whistleblowers inside Trump administration. I’ve received three communications saying that during his term Trump has suffered a ‘series’ of ‘mini-strokes.’”

Mr. Trump has denied this. His doctor said there have been no mini-strokes.

The Press Critic

Besides the president’s railing against the “fake news” industry, the Trump administration’s chief media critic is Attorney General Barr. He calls the liberal media a “collection of liars” for their muted coverage of Antifa/Black Lives Matter destructive riots. Conservatives say the media ignored the violence and lawbreaking, terming them “mostly peaceful protests.”

Mr. Barr also mocks the Russian-obsessed press for a lack of self-awareness.

“I agree with you that it’s been stunning that all we have gotten from the mainstream media is sort of bovine silence in the face of the complete collapse of the so-called Russiagate scandal, which they did all they could to sensationalize and drive,” Mr. Barr told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo. “And it’s, like, not even a ‘whoops.’ They’re just onto the next false scandal. So, that has been surprising to me: that people aren’t concerned about civil liberties and the integrity of our governmental process.”

He said on Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz’s podcast: “One of the stunning things, I’m sure you’ll agree, is that the media just went hell bent for leather on pushing this Russiagate story that Trump was essentially an agent of Russia. And they were merciless. And up until recently you had former senior government officials sort of talking knowingly about how the president was going to be indicted and so forth and so on.”

A Georgia Republican who has said that Muslims do not belong in government and expressed her belief in the baseless conspiracy theory called QAnon has won her primary runoff and is all but certain to win a seat in the House of Representatives in November.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a construction executive, won 57% of the vote in Georgia’s heavily-Republican 14th Congressional District, handily defeating neurosurgeon John Cowan, who had pitched himself as, “All of the conservative, none of the embarrassment.”

President Trump congratulated Greene on Wednesday morning, calling her a “future Republican Star” who is “strong on everything.”

Congratulations to future Republican Star Marjorie Taylor Greene on a big Congressional primary win in Georgia against a very tough and smart opponent. Marjorie is strong on everything and never gives up – a real WINNER!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 12, 2020

Many high-ranking Republicans in the House of Representatives distanced themselves from Greene earlier this summer, after Politico highlighted videos in which Greene expressed anti-Muslim sentiments. A spokesman for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy called her views “appalling.”

Facebook took down an ad in which Greene brandished a rifle and threatened antifa protesters, saying it violated its policies against inciting violence. And many media outlets have covered her support for the outlandish QAnon conspiracy theory.

GOP Candidates Open To QAnon Conspiracy Theory Advance In Congressional Races

As Emma Hurt of member station WABE reports, “all of it only fueled her message.”

“The fake news media hates me. Big Tech censors me,” Greene said in a video on Twitter. “The DC Swamp fears me. And George Soros and the Democrats are trying to take me down.”

Rep. Ilhan Omar Wins Congressional Primary

In videos spotlighted by Politico, Greene called the election of two Muslim women to Congress “an Islamic invasion into our government.”

In one video message, Greene acknowledged that U.S. laws protect freedom of religion — and then said, “but I’m sorry, anyone that is a Muslim, that believes in Sharia law, does not belong in our government.”

“Let me explain something to you, Muhammad,” she said in one video. “We already have equality and justice for all Americans. Muslims are not being held back in any way … what you people want is special treatment. You want to rise above us.”

Greene also said that generations of Black and Hispanic men have been held down by “being in gangs and dealing drugs,” not by anything white people have done; that both white supremacists and members of the Black Lives Matter movement are “idiots”; and that in seeking the Black vote, Democrats are “trying to keep the Black people in a modern-day form of slavery.”

Democrats are the real racists, Greene said, stating that “the most mistreated group of people in the United States today are white males.”

Greene made national headlines in early June, when The Washington Post reported on her support for the QAnon conspiracy.

The once-fringe conspiracy has made inroads into the mainstream, with multiple GOP candidates expressing, at a minimum, openness to the QAnon narrative.

The conspiracy includes a wide variety of shifting and often-contradictory predictions and allegations, but it centers on an anonymous figure named “Q” who asserts that a wave of mass arrests are about to take down high-ranking Trump opponents.

What Is QAnon? The Conspiracy Theory Tiptoeing Into Trump World

Followers of “Q” often believe that the world is controlled by elite members of a secretive satanic child sex-trafficking ring.

“Q is a patriot, we know that for sure,” Greene said in a video from 2017, in which she recapped some of Q’s predictions and why she supports them.

“There’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take this global cabal of Satan-worshiping pedophiles out, and I think we have the president to do it,” she said, referring to Trump.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a businesswoman who has expressed racist views and support for the far-right conspiracy theory QAnon, has won the Republican nomination for Georgia’s 14th congressional district.

Greene beat the neurosurgeon John Cowan in a primary runoff for the open seat on Tuesday in the deep-red district in north-west Georgia, despite several Republican officials denouncing her campaign after videos surfaced in which she expressed racist, antisemitic and anti-Muslim views.

She has amassed tens of thousands of followers on social media, where she often posts videos of herself speaking directly to the camera. Those videos have helped propel her popularity with her base, while also drawing strong condemnation from some future would-be colleagues in Congress.

In a series of videos unearthed just after Greene placed first in the initial 9 June Republican primary, she complains of an “Islamic invasion” into government offices, claims Black and Hispanic men are held back by “gangs and dealing drugs”, and pushes an antisemitic conspiracy theory that the billionaire philanthropist George Soros, who is Jewish, collaborated with the Nazis.

Several high-profile Republicans then spoke out against her. The House minority whip, Steve Scalise of Louisiana, quickly threw his support behind Cowan, while Representative Jody Hice of Georgia rescinded an endorsement of Greene.

Greene addressed criticism of her comments on Twitter. “The Fake News Media, the DC Swamp, and their radical leftist allies see me as a very serious threat. I will not let them whip me into submission,” she said, without distancing herself from her earlier remarks.

Greene also is part of a growing list of candidates who have expressed support for QAnon, the far-right US conspiracy theory popular among some supporters of Donald Trump. She is regarded as one of the QAnon supporters with the best chance of winning in November.

She has positioned herself as a staunch Trump supporter and emphasizes a strongly pro-gun, pro-border wall and anti-abortion message. She has also connected with voters through an intensive effort to travel the district and meet people on the ground.

Larry Silker, a 72-year-old retiree, cast a ballot for Greene last week at an early voting location in Dallas, Georgia.

“She seems to be a go-getter, you know. She’s out seeing everybody that she can, and I think that’s nice,” Silker said.

Asked whether he had seen criticism of Greene’s remarks, Silker said: “Well yeah, you know, you see it. But do you put faith in it? You just have to weigh it out.”

The district stretches from the outskirts of metro Atlanta to the largely rural north-west corner of the state. Greene will face the Democrat Kevin Van Ausdal in November. The Republican representative Tom Graves, who did not seek re-election, last won the seat with over 76% of the vote in 2018.

Twitter announced on Tuesday it has begun taking sweeping actions to limit the reach of QAnon content and banned many of the conspiracy theory’s followers due to ongoing problems with harassment and the dissemination of misinformation.

Twitter will stop recommending accounts and content related to QAnon, including in email and follow recommendations and will take steps to limit content circulation in places like trends and search. This action will affect approximately 150,000 accounts, according to a spokesperson, who asked to remain unnamed due to concerns about the targeted harassment of social media employees.

The Twitter spokesperson also said the company had taken down more than 7,000 QAnon accounts in the last few weeks for breaking its rules on targeted harassment as part of its new policy.

The sweeping enforcement action will ban QAnon-related terms from appearing in trending topics and the platform’s search feature, ban known QAnon-related URLs, and ban “swarming” of victims who are baselessly targeted by coordinated harassment campaigns pushed by its followers.

The spokesperson said while the targeted enforcement against QAnon fell under Twitter’s existing platform manipulation rules, its classification of QAnon as coordinated harmful activity was a new designation. The spokesperson said Twitter was taking action now because of an escalating degree of harm associated with the conspiracy theory.

Twitter plans to permanently suspend accounts that violate existing policies around platform manipulation, ban evasion and operate multiple accounts, behaviors commonly seen used by QAnon accounts, the spokesperson said. Twitter began blocking QAnon websites last week and will continue to block the distribution of QAnon-related URLs, the spokesperson said.

QAnon is a right-wing conspiracy theory that centers around the baseless belief that an anonymous tipster is revealing how President Donald Trump is leading a secret war against a so-called Deep State — a collection of political, business and Hollywood elites who, according to the theory, worship Satan and abuse and murder children. The conspiracy theory draws its roots from Pizzagate, which claimed Hillary Clinton ran a pedophile ring outside of a Washington D.C. pizza shop.

QAnon emerged from the fringes of the internet’s conspiracy community to become a recognized political phenomenon, with Trump supporters showing up at events with “Q” merchandise. Qanon followers have also been implicated in armed standoffsattempted kidnappings, harassment and murder since the conspiracy theory first gained traction in in the internet in October 2017.

Last year, the FBI designated QAnon as a potential domestic terror threat. The FBI’s report on QAnon’s ties to dangerous real-world activities led in part to Twitter’s decision, a spokesperson said.

Despite no evidence and numerous predictions that failed to materialize, QAnon support has trickled into the mainstream, with numerous Republican candidates for Congress openly espousing their support for the movement.

And the coronavirus pandemic has only added more momentum to what is now a QAnon movement that has new found common ground with other fringe internet communities, including anti-vaccination groups. In recent months, coordinated QAnon campaigns pushed fringe hashtags like #Obamagate and #SubpoenaObama into trending topics that were ultimately promoted by Trump.

Some QAnon supporters have also become more organized and aggressive in attacking celebrities. QAnon followers frequently comb through social media posts and Instagram pictures of Trump’s famous political opponents, intentionally misinterpreting benign photos as proof the celebrities are eating children. The followers then target those celebrities with harassment campaigns, coordinated by influencers in the QAnon community on Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.

TV personality and author Chrissy Teigen has been a constant target of harassment by QAnon and Pizzagate accounts in recent weeks. The harassment campaign has since targeted friends in her life, some of whom are private figures, who have had their Instagram accounts swarmed by conspiracy theorists posting violent threats.

This type of harassment campaign is known as “swarming” or “brigading,” and Twitter said those swarms will no longer be allowed on the platform. Twitter will ban users who threaten users during QAnon-related swarms, and will limit the reach and search visibility of those who participate in them.

A Twitter spokesperson said this sort of anti-harassment policy could apply to other groups that are primarily motivated by targeted harassment in the future.

Earlier this month, QAnon conspiracy theorists falsely claimed on Twitter, Reddit, and TikTok that the furniture company Wayfair was shipping trafficked children because price glitches raised the price of pillows and cabinets to tens of thousands of dollars. The company’s name was the top trend on Twitter in the United States on July 10 as Twitter users posted links to expensive furniture.

The company released a statement reiterating that some cabinets were appropriately priced, while a glitch affected the price of the cost of some personalized pillows.

Still, the conspiracy theory has continued to rage on TikTok among some users who did not know it was initially posited by a QAnon influencer on Twitter.

Reddit has similarly banned the process of “brigading,” where users of one community target another community with harassment in a coordinated fashion, on its service.

It’s hard to know what’s most notable about the Colorado Republican primary upset that ousted Rep. Scott Tipton on Tuesday night.

It could be that the primary winner, restaurant owner Lauren Boebert, is a newcomer to politics who defeated a five-term incumbent. It could be that her restaurant (the aptly named Shooters Grill, in also-aptly-named Rifle, Colo.) is known for its servers who openly carry firearms on the job. It could be that the race represents another defeat for a Trump-backed candidate.

It could also be her openness to the QAnon conspiracy theory.

QAnon is a baseless conspiracy theory focused on an anonymous figure, “Q,” who posts to Internet message boards. Among the false beliefs is the idea that former special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed not to investigate President Trump but, rather, to investigate other people, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama, for various extreme allegations that have been thoroughly debunked. The theory also posits that those supposed investigation targets are wearing ankle monitors that track their movements.

The conspiracy theory has gained traction on the far right, and believers have touted it with signs at Trump rallies.

What Is QAnon? The Conspiracy Theory Tiptoeing Into Trump World

Boebert is one of several general election congressional candidates who have spoken in support of QAnon. Wednesday morning, Alex Kaplan, a senior researcher at liberal-leaning media-monitoring organization Media Matters for America, counted nine who would make it to the general election. Altogether, the organization has counted 59 congressional candidates who have expressed support for QAnon.

Boebert appeared on SteelTruth, a show hosted by QAnon believer Ann Vandersteel, during the primary campaign. In that interview, she said she was “very familiar” with the theory and voiced support for it, though she didn’t say she fully believed in QAnon’s ideas.

Tuesday's Primaries: 5 Races To Watch In Colorado, Utah And Oklahoma

“Everything that I’ve heard of Q, I hope that this is real, because it only means America is getting stronger and better, and people are returning to conservative values, and that’s what I am for,” she said. “And so everything that I have heard of this movement is only motivating and encouraging and bringing people together stronger, and if this is real, then it could be really great for our country.”

NPR asked Boebert’s campaign about her views on QAnon. Her campaign responded with a statement from the candidate: “I’m glad the IG and the AG are investigating deep state activities that undermine the President. I don’t follow QAnon.”

Here Boebert appears to be referring to Justice Department investigations into the origins of the Russia probe. That investigation looked into ties between Russia and Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Lawyer: Shooter Wasn't Trying To Kill A Mob Boss. He Was Under 'QAnon' Delusion

QAnon remains a fringe conspiracy theory. Three-quarters of Americans have never heard of it, according to an April poll from the Pew Research Center, and another 20% have heard only “a little.” Only a tiny sliver — 3% — say they’ve heard “a lot” about it.

But Congress members who believe in or are open to the conspiracy theory mean that the theory’s beliefs could have representation on Capitol Hill. It could also mean a new, louder megaphone for the theory and its supporters.

Many congressional candidates who have said they support QAnon have gone further than Boebert in voicing their beliefs.

Oregon Republican Senate candidate Jo Rae Perkins, for example, said, “I stand with Q and the team” in her victory speech after winning the nomination to run against Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican congressional candidate in Georgia, said in a 2017 video that “Q is a patriot” and that she wanted to “take this global cabal of Satan-worshipping pedophiles out,” as The Washington Post has reported. (Top Republicans have rebuked Greene for her racist views expressed in online videos and reported on by Politico.)

While some of these candidates stand little chance of winning in November — Perkins, for example, is running in a Senate race that the Cook Political Report has rated “Solid Democratic” — Boebert’s chances are good. Boebert’s race, in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, is rated “Solid Republican.” Greene is headed to a GOP primary runoff in Georgia’s 14th District, which is also considered safe Republican territory in the fall.

SEATTLE — Republicans in Oregon have selected a Senate candidate who promotes the QAnon conspiracy theory, the latest sign that conservatives are increasingly willing to embrace a movement built on a baseless series of plotlines about President Trump battling a shadowy globalist cabal.

Jo Rae Perkins was carrying about 50 percent of the vote in Oregon’s primary as of Wednesday afternoon, vanquishing three other Republican candidates to become the party’s nominee for the seat currently held by Senator Jeff Merkley, a Democrat. While the incumbent is considered a strong favorite, and Ms. Perkins’s embrace of fringe ideas could alienate mainstream voters, she has the backing of party leaders for a seat Republicans held as recently as 2009.

Ms. Perkins said in an interview that the vote in Tuesday’s election was “monumental” as she saw QAnon supporters around the state and the country back her campaign.

“We are seeing more and more people getting emboldened as we see more and more information get out there,” she said. “And as people put together more and more pieces of the puzzle, they can see, yeah, this is real.”

The conspiracy theory began in 2017 when someone claiming to have top-secret information began posting under a pseudonym to the online message board 4chan. Those continuing posts from the person identified as “Q” have woven a fantastical plot about the planet’s elites: a global cabal of politicians and celebrities controlling governments, media, banks and a child sex-trafficking ring.

The posts portray Mr. Trump as a heroic mastermind working with patriotic members of government to dismantle the cabal and “deep state” actors, leading up to mass arrests of the likes of former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and others. Adherents pore over each new Q message, hunting for clues and patterns, pointing out coincidences involving the number 17 because Q is the 17th letter of the alphabet and embracing theories such as the idea that John F. Kennedy Jr. faked his own death and is alive now posting as Q.

While some of Q’s most fundamental claims — for example, that the investigation by Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel, into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election would actually end with prominent Democrats being imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay — have never come to fruition, the movement has continued to seep into mainstream conservative circles. Mr. Trump has stoked the flames with references to “deep state” and retweets of Qanon adherents. Q signs have appeared at rallies for Mr. Trump, and believers have been arrested in a series of troubling episodes, including an armed standoff near the Hoover Dam.

Those actions have raised growing fears that delusional theories about a covert battle for global control could lead to more violence. Last May, the F.B.I. included QAnon in an intelligence bulletin that warned of potential violence stemming from “fringe political conspiracy theories.” But pushback against the conspiracy theory has been met with yet further theories of a growing plot.

“I believe that that was some of the deep state actors in the F.B.I. trying to put out disinformation,” said Ms. Perkins, an insurance agent who had previously lost primary campaigns for seats in Congress in 2018, 2016 and 2014. She has promoted other issues in her campaign, including expanding the wall at the border with Mexico and restricting the size of the federal government.

A series of candidates for public office have promoted or dabbled in the conspiracy theory, but Ms. Perkins’s victory has offered the most compelling evidence that Republican voters were willing to embrace proponents of the conspiracy theory. A spokesman for the Oregon Republican Party did not immediately return a call seeking comment, but the party’s vice chairwoman, Tracy Honl, said in a brief interview that she supported Ms. Perkins’s candidacy.

Oregon has largely backed Democratic statewide candidates in recent history, with its last Republican governor serving in the 1980s. In Tuesday’s election, voters in the Portland area approved a new tax to fund homeless services.

Jim Pasero, a political consultant and publisher in Portland who once ran speechwriting operations for the Republican National Committee, said that Democrats had so come to dominate politics in Oregon that mainstream Republicans hesitate to run for office.

“People are afraid to put money into Republican contests,” he said. “So the fringe candidates get to have a voice.”

But the state also has deep Republican pockets, largely in rural areas, and a Republican secretary of state. Alek Skarlatos, known for helping foil a terrorist attack on a train in Europe in 2015, was running as a Republican in the state’s 4th Congressional District and won on Wednesday with 87 percent of the vote.

Joseph Lowndes, a political scientist at the University of Oregon who researches right-wing political trends, said the Republican Party in the state had shifted rightward since the 1990s but in the past few years had turned increasingly toward the fringe.

Mr. Lowndes attended one of the recent reopening rallies and said he was surprised how many QAnon advocates were there. He said that even if there were Republicans who were not fully on board with the movement, the theory was not taboo in the way the John Birch Society once was.

“It’s clearly growing,” he said.

Q posts have also helped shape growing wariness of government interventions to halt the spread of the coronavirus. Q has portrayed the virus response as a larger plot to undermine the president and his re-election.

Ms. Perkins expressed wariness about the medical leaders advising the president and said she would not get any vaccine that would be developed in response to the coronavirus.

“I don’t know what they are pumping me full of,” Ms. Perkins said. “I don’t want that crap.”

Ms. Perkins said she saw Mr. Trump as being involved in the Q effort, saying that she believed he was posting online under the pseudonym Q+. While she insisted that Q was real and that it was “a mathematical impossibility” for Q not to be real, she later left open the possibility that Q was not.

“It’s always a possibility that Q is fake,” Ms. Perkins said. “But I do not believe at this point in time, based on everything that I know, that Q is fake.”

Neil MacFarquhar contributed reporting.
