]]>A number of progressive groups in Portland, Ore., are demanding the resignations of Mayor Ted Wheeler and police Chief Chuck Lovell after the deadly shooting that occurred in the city over the weekend as skirmishes broke out between supporters of President Trump and Black Lives Matter protesters.
The Oregon chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Oregon Justice Resource Center, the Portland Democratic Socialists of America NextUp Action Fund, Portland’s Resistance and Popular Mobilization PDX have all called for Wheeler’s resignation in a joint letter that said the mayor has “not protected or supported” the city’s residents.
“What took place last night was inevitable given Mayor Wheeler’s repeated failure,” the letter said, according to the Oregonian. “He has not protected or supported Portlanders. We do not have confidence in his ability to course-correct. He must resign.”
PORTLAND MAYOR SENDS OPEN LETTER TO TRUMP: ‘NO THANKS’
Bobbin Singh, the executive director of the Oregon Justice Resource Center, also called for the local leaders to resign.
“These conditions have been created because there’s been a lack of leadership, a lack of vision,” Singh said. “We can no longer move forward with the current leadership that’s in place in Portland.”
The victim of Saturday’s shooting was identified by Joey Gibson, founder of the right-wing group Patriot Prayer, as Aaron “Jay” Danielson of Portland. Photos taken of the body show he was wearing a Patriot Prayer hat.
The Oregonian cited sources in reporting that the Portland Police Bureau is investigating Michael Forest Reinoehl, 48, for his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting.
Both Wheeler and Lovell have been under intense scrutiny from both sides of the political divide, with Trump calling Wheeler, a Democrat, a “fool” and blamed him for allowing violence to proliferate in the liberal city.
Wheeler, who hit back at the president during a news conference.
“That’s classic Trump. Mr. President, how can you think that a comment like that, if you’re watching this, is in any way helpful?” Wheeler said. “It’s an aggressive stance; it is not collaborative. I certainly reached out, I believe in a collaborative manner, by saying earlier that you need to do your part and I need to do my part and then we both need to be held accountable,”

He said he wanted to work with the president.
“Wouldn’t that be a message?” the manyor said. “Donald Trump and Ted Wheeler working together to help move this country forward. Why don’t we try that for a change?”
The unrest began on Saturday when a caravan of about 600 vehicles packed with Trump supporters drove through Portland and was met with counterprotesters. Skirmishes broke out between the groups and, about 15 minutes after the caravan left the city, Danielson was shot.

]]>Progressives blasted the Democratic National Committee for allotting only 60 seconds at next week’s convention to “Squad” member Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., while giving larger platforms to former Republican Gov. John Kasich and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Ocasio-Cortez has become an icon among the left since being sworn into Congress in 2018, but she is set to give a one-minute pre-recorded address at the convention, which she acknowledged on Twitter quoting the poem “God’s Minute” by the late civil rights leader Dr. Benjamin E. Mays.
“I only have a minute. Sixty seconds in it. Forced upon me, I did not choose it, But I know that I must use it,” Ocasio-Cortez cited the poem on Wednesday. “Give account if I abuse it. Suffer if I lose it. Only a tiny little minute, But eternity is in it.”

Her fans blasted the DNC’s decision to give her such a small window to speak while a Kasich, a former Republican governor, and Bloomberg, a former Republican, apparently will get more airtime.
“REPUBLICAN John Kasich is getting more time to speak at the DEMOCRATIC national Convention than @AOC. That is all,” progressive activist Nabilah Islam reacted.
“Hey at least AOC is getting a 60 second ad during the intermission at the Kasich Bloomberg Show,” former Bernie Sanders speechwriter David Sirota quipped.
“Mike Bloomberg, John Kasich, Pete Buttigieg and 60 seconds of pre-recorded, officially approved AOC is in fact the perfect representation of the Dem party,” The Hill’s Krystal Ball wrote.

“@AOC needs more than 60 seconds if we’re fine wasting time & space bringing Bloomberg & Kasich. It’s OK,” New York Times columnist Wajahat Ali said.
“Joe Rogan’s naughty jokes are worse than a guy who blocked a minimum wage increase and implemented stop & frisk according to Democratic elites,” progressive commentator Kyle Kulinski tweeted, referring to Bloomberg’s policies as NYC mayor.
“With the @DNC giving John Kasich, Michael Bloomberg, Pete Buttigieg and other Republicans/Republican-lites significantly more speaking time than @AOC… one of the most popular politicians in America…one has to wonder whether they’re trying to lose,” Status Coup co-founder Jordan Chariton pondered.

Many progressives were also outspoken with condemnation of Joe Biden’s selection of Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif. as his running mate.
Others set to speak at next week’s convention include former President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton along with several of Biden’s former 2020 rivals including Sens. Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar, and Cory Booker.

]]>Though much of Americans’ political focus has turned to the general election battle looming between President Trump and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, primary season is not quite over, and another round of consequential races is upcoming on Tuesday, including a primary challenge to high-profile Squad member Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich.
Tlaib is facing a challenge from Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones — who she beat out in a crowded primary race in 2018 — to retain her seat in Congress. But now it’s just Jones and Tlaib going head to head. And despite Tlaib’s massive fundraising advantage, Jones is a popular politician with deep connections in the Detroit political establishment.
There’s also a major establishment versus progressives battle set for Tuesday in Missouri, with longtime Democratic Rep. Lacy Clay facing a primary challenge from Cori Bush, who is supported by the Justice Democrats — a far-left group with a history of backing successful challenges to establishment Democrats.
Kansas, Arizona, and Washington state will also hold primaries Tuesday. Here’s your guide to the top stories ahead of (yet another) primary election day.

100 DAYS OUT TRUMP LOOMS FOR GAME CHANGE AS BIDEN MAKES GAINS
Michigan
Because of Tlaib’s national name recognition as a member of the Squad, her race will likely be the most-watched on Tuesday. Jones — who has a long history of intra-party tangles with Tlaib — has criticized Tlaib for being too fond of the limelight and is running on a platform of focusing on the city of Detroit the district.
“As Michigan’s 13th Congressional District Representative, Tlaib has worked hard to become an international rock star,” Jones tweeted in late July. “Representative Tlaib has a huge war chest of nearly $2 million. The money in Rashida Tlaib’s war chest is mostly from people around the world.”
She added: “This means Tlaib is beholding (sic) to her money people, & not focused on the citizens of the 13th Congressional District.”
Jones also previously knocked Tlaib for calling Trump a “m—–f—–.”
“You can be vocal, but the things that were being done — like calling the president a ‘MF’ or booing Hillary — every time something like that happened, I was getting calls from people saying ‘You’re more professional than this,’” Jones told The New York Times.
RASHIDA TLAIB DECLINES TO BACK BIDEN AMID TOUGH HOUSE REELECTION FIGHT: REPORT
But as a much better funded, yet still unsuccessful primary challenge of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., showed, the progressive Squad members are hard to unseat. And Tlaib has touted her progressive credentials, amplifying endorsements from the Detroit Democratic Socialists of America, Center for Popular Democracy, the EPA workers union and other progressive groups.
And like Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib has been a prolific fundraiser. She had more than $900,000 cash on hand as of mid-July, per FEC records, whereas Jones had just over $21,000.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., also endorsed Tlaib this week. Meanwhile, Tlaib, after initially declining to endorse Biden citing her primary race, later said that “I support Vice President Biden defeating Donald Trump in November, and I am doing to do everything I can do ensure that Biden wins in Michigan.”
Additionally, Rep. Paul Mitchell, R-Mich., is retiring from his 10th District seat. State Rep. Shane Hernandez and retired Air Force Brigadier General Doug Slocum appear to be the top two candidates in the GOP primary in the generally safe Republican district. And there is a highly-competitive primary Republican to replace Rep. Justin Amash, L-Mich., as the GOP nominee for the state’s 3rd Congressional District.
Kansas
In Kansas, Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., is retiring, leaving an open seat that many speculated U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo might run for. Instead, former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is running in a crowded primary with at least two well-funded opponents.
Rep. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., is also in the mix, and received the endorsement of the incumbent Roberts, as is Bob Hampton, who frames himself as a pro-Trump outsider.

DEM-LINKED GROUP SECRETLY SEEKS TO BOOST REPUBLICAN KRIS KOBACH, AS GOP CALLS OUT PRIMARY MEDDLING
Kobach, a hardline conserve on many issues, including immigration, is endorsed by former Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C. But he’s worried some in the GOP that he may be too controversial to be elected.
The winner of the Tuesday primary will most likely face well-funded Democratic state Sen. Barbara Bollier.
Marshall is leaving his congressional seat open and former Lieutenant Gov. Tracey Mann and Finney County Commissioner Bill Clifford are likely the favorites to become the Republican nominee in that district. And interestingly, in the state’s 2nd Congressional District, Rep. Steve Watkins Jr., who squeaked out a win in 2018, is facing a primary challenge from state Treasurer Jake LaTurner.
Topeka Mayor Democrat Michelle De La Isla will likely face the winner of that primary in the general election.
Missouri
Clay, who represents the St. Louis area, is facing a tough primary challenge from Justice Democrats-backed Bush. Justice Democrats are an organization aligned with Ocasio-Cortez and the Democratic “squad” in the House.
Clay last week was endorsed by Jamaal Bowman, the Ocasio-Cortez-backed New York Democrat who toppled longtime Rep. Eliot Engel in the New York primary earlier this year. If Clay falls, it would continue a trend of highly-progressive Democrats successfully unseating powerful moderates in big cities, as was seen in Bowman’s victory, as well as Ocasio-Cortez’s primary win over former Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y., in 2018.
She’s also gotten backing from former Democratic presidential candidate and self-declared democratic socialist Bernie Sanders.
Meanwhile, incumbent Republican Gov. Mike Parson faces an unusually high-profile field of primary challengers for an incumbent. State Rep. Jim Neely and Saundra McDowell, who previously was the Republican nominee for state auditor, are running against him.
Arizona
Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz., is the most vulnerable incumbent in his state, according to the Cook Political Report. He isn’t facing a primary challenge, but there are four Democrats, all of whom have managed strong fundraising totals, in the primary to take him on in November.
Hiral Tipirneni is head and shoulders above the rest, having pulled in nearly $2.5 million this cycle. The next-highest fundraiser is Anita Malik, who has raised just over $240,000. Every other candidate in that primary has raised six figures as well.
Tipirneni is a career emergency room physician who wants to expand Medicare and wants to pass a “path to citizenship” and advocates for “secure borders,” saying those ideas are “not mutually exclusive.”
Malik is a mother who previously was a reporter for The Arizona Republic. She went on to be a radio reporter, help run Arizona State’s business journalism center and eventually became a tech CEO. Malik supports”Medicare-for-All” and advocates for “free and affordable tuition for public colleges and universities.” She also backs “strong borders.”
Washington
Washington runs a top-two primary system, and its governor, Jay Inslee, is up for reelection this year. Inslee is almost certainly going to be in that top two and make it to the November general election. But there is a laundry list of Republican candidates running to unseat him.
The Seattle Times, in its endorsement for Inslee’s reelection, lists physician Raul Garcia — endorsed by party leaders — and Loren Culp, a former chief of a small-town police department, as the most credible Republicans. But with more than 30 candidates on the ballot, who ends up with the second-most votes after Inslee could be a surprise.

There will also be a similar primary for lieutenant governor, which is an open seat with incumbent Cyrus Habib deciding not to run for reelection.
Rep. Denny Heck, D-Wash., and state Rep. Dick Muri, a Republican, are among those on the ballot.
Heck’s 10th Congressional District seat, therefore, is open, and more than 15 candidates are running for it. State Rep. Kristine Reeves, state Rep. Beth Doglio and former Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland are three of the best-funded Democrats running for the deep-blue seat.

As protests stemming from George Floyd’s killing at the hands of Minneapolis police spread across the country, Black progressives appear to have had a good night in Democratic primaries Tuesday, while some Republicans endorsed by President Trump did not fare as well on the GOP side.
Three races in New York and Virginia, and perhaps one in Kentucky, highlight what could be the start of something important in Democratic politics — the surge of Black candidates.
As the Cook Political Report’s Dave Wasserman put it, Democratic voters in 2018 “showed an unprecedented desire to nominate women” and this year, there’s “another sea change in desire, this time towards Black candidates.”

What that could mean for the 2020 presidential race is notable as well. If Democrats have two key pillars of their base fired up and politically activated — women and Black voters — that could be a game-changer, as Trump’s ratings continue to suffer.
Looking at Tuesday’s results, the upset of the night appears to belong to Jamaal Bowman, a former middle school principal from the Bronx. He is well ahead of longtime Democratic incumbent Eliot Engel, with more than 60% of the vote.
Many races have not been called yet because of the significant number of absentee ballots that remain to be counted.
Bowman began to surge in recent weeks after Engel, asking to speak at an event, was caught on mic saying, “If I didn’t have a primary, I wouldn’t care.”
That was in addition to a reporter ringing the House Foreign Affairs chairman’s doorbell a month ago at his home in a tony Washington suburb to find him there rather than in his home district, as New York suffered from the pandemic.
Bowman wound up raising $2 million and surging against the 16-term incumbent, who hasn’t faced a competitive primary in 20 years.
Another New York seat, which had been held by longtime retiring Rep. Nita Lowey, has 33-year-old Mondaire Jones well ahead. The former Westchester County law office worker gained momentum in recent weeks and now leads by double digits. If the result holds up, and Jones wins this fall, he’d be the first openly gay black congressman.
Progressive star Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, by the way, was facing a primary in her first time standing for reelection. But she easily dispatched former CNBC reporter Michelle Caruso-Cabrera with 73% of the vote.
Trump-backed Republicans falter
Meanwhile, in North Carolina, perhaps the surprise of the night was a 24-year-old motivational speaker, Madison Cawthorn. He upset a Trump-backed candidate to replace Mark Meadows, who stepped down from the House to become Trump’s chief of staff. Cawthorn was paralyzed from the waist down after a 2014 car accident.
And in Kentucky, Trump tweeted his opposition to giving another term to a sitting congressman, Thomas Massie, who forced a vote on an economic relief package. Massie won overwhelmingly with almost 90% of the vote. Members of Republican leadership backed Massie’s primary opponent after Massie forced the vote. But after racist tweets surfaced from that opponent, Massie cruised.
Results are still slow to roll in in the marquee Democratic Kentucky Senate primary, where progressive upstart state Rep. Charles Booker and former Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath squared off to take on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in the fall.
Booker has seen a boon after speaking out and taking a leadership role in Black Lives Matter protests stemming from the death of Breonna Taylor in Louisville. Taylor was shot and killed by police.
McGrath had brought in a whopping $41 million, was endorsed by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and had been seen as the overwhelming front-runner before the protests.
