Users posted screen shots of their donations after making them and implored their followers to match their contributions.<\/p>\n<p>Within four days, the fund had raised about $20 million, Ms. Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone around the world is ready for justice,\u201d Tonja Honsey, the executive director of the fund, said on Friday. \u201cThey\u2019re ready for real change, and they\u2019re supporting that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bail funds are independent charitable organizations that collect money to release those who have been jailed before trials. People who are arrested and charged are often assessed a fee that they have to pay in order to await trial freely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Bail can cost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/11\/us\/when-bail-is-out-of-defendants-reach-other-costs-mount.html\" title=\"\">thousands<\/a> \u2014 even millions \u2014 of dollars, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/01\/11\/nyregion\/how-does-bail-work-and-why-do-people-want-to-get-rid-of-it.html\" title=\"\">disproportionately affects poor people<\/a>, who are effectively jailed because they do not have enough money to pay for their freedom. Having those fees paid allows people to resume their lives until their cases\u2019 outcomes are determined.<\/p>\n<p>Such funds have existed in some form for hundreds of years, said Pilar Weiss, the director of the Community Justice Exchange, which runs a directory of bail funds around the country called the National Bail Fund Network.<\/p>\n<p>After years of Black Lives Matter protests, many people have become more accustomed to seeking them out when looking to support protesters. This weekend, as protests took place in at least 140 cities across the United States, calls promoting local bail funds spread on social media.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Sophia Lesperance, a 24-year-old administrative worker in Boston, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nonprofithoe\/status\/1265701638997790720\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">tweeted Wednesday<\/a> that she was looking to send money to pay bail for people protesting in Minneapolis. Her friend Huey Hewitt, a student who lives in Western Massachusetts, did some research and quickly found the Minnesota Freedom Fund.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI know I can\u2019t go out there,\u201d Ms. Lesperance said. \u201cI can\u2019t fly out to Minnesota. I\u2019m going to have to find a way to help out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hewitt, 23, who will be pursuing a doctorate in African-American studies at Harvard University starting this fall, said that the importance of bail funds had become clear to Black Lives Matter activists, reaching back to the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is a lesson that a lot of organizers learned from Ferguson,\u201d he said. \u201cAs someone who has been involved in movement work for some time now, I just intuitively know there are going to be some political arrests in the wake of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Minnesota alone, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MnDPS_DPS\/status\/1267349200280399881?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1267349200280399881&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fminnesota.cbslocal.com%2F2020%2F06%2F01%2Fgeorge-floyd-more-than-350-arrested-over-the-weekend-amid-minnesotas-aggressive-response-to-protests-unrest%2F\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">more than 360 people<\/a> were arrested this weekend. Ms. Smith said Monday that once courts began to open and bail was posted, the fund would begin to pay for the protesters\u2019 release.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Honsey said on Friday that she expected charges to come on a continual basis, for the next six months to a year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Last week, some donors provided small incentives to encourage their followers to do the same. Marea Stamper, 42, a D.J. known as the Black Madonna, said on Wednesday that if her followers sent her donation receipts, she would add them to the guest lists for her shows when touring resumes. (She set up a recurring donation, noting that bail organizations need funding \u201cbetween major news events,\u201d not just in their wake.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>She said that dozens of people had responded to her message and that \u201cthe amounts were pretty decent considering everyone\u2019s pretty broke right now. I was like, \u2018Who has $50?\u2019\u201d For the Minnesota Freedom Fund, people creatively incentivized donations, promising <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NoBonzo\/status\/1266129924232003585?s=20\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">customized patches<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RaxKingIsDead\/status\/1266098626293641217\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">partly nude pictures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the Chicago rapper Noname <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/noname\/status\/1266031250222886914\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">said<\/a> that she had given the fund $1,000 and asked celebrities that followed her to match that amount. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JanelleMonae\/status\/1266133157708853249\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">Janelle Mon\u00e1e<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kehlani\/status\/1266104770751684608\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">Kehlani<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YaraShahidi\/status\/1266136404012044288\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">Yara Shahidi <\/a>and others quickly responded saying they had done so.<\/p>\n<p>Other celebrities, including <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sethrogen\/status\/1266034530567155712\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">Seth Rogen<\/a> and the Safdie brothers (the directors of \u201cUncut Gems\u201d), formed chains, retweeting posts about matching with their own matching donations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Atlanta rapper J.I.D. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JIDsv\/status\/1266170870105624576\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">tweeted that he had donated $1,000<\/a> in response to Noname\u2019s call. \u201cThat\u2019s one of the people that I respect and can just trust her opinion,\u201d he said of Noname in an interview. \u201cThat was cool that she helped me find it. I was already trying to find something, just anything. So that was just perfect timing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Ms. Weiss said that while there is a long tradition of communities pooling money to pay to free family members or friends \u2014 one that dates back to slavery \u2014 in the last five years there has been a growth of funds for people who can\u2019t afford bail, spurred largely by the movement to end mass incarceration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that it\u2019s become language that people know,\u201d she said. \u201cOn Twitter, I\u2019ll see that somebody will say, \u2018This thing happened, I\u2019ll get arrested. People might need to start a bail fund for me.\u2019 It\u2019s entered the lexicon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Weiss said that bail funds around the country had seen a surge of donations over the weekend, which she attributed in part to the Minnesota Freedom Fund\u2019s visibility on social media. \u201cThat a very large audience of people started talking about bail funds definitely helped catalyze it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the last decade, it has become common for those looking to support a cause to send money to a single destination, often a GoFundMe campaign. Charitable causes of the moment often go viral, flooding the recipient with funds. But the organizers of campaigns intended to benefit large groups of people may not know how to distribute the money when the time comes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been set up doing this consistently,\u201d said Ms. Honsey, of the Minnesota Freedom Fund. \u201cWe have all the pieces in place. It doesn\u2019t take time to set up. We know exactly how the process goes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organization has received so much support that it is trying to help others in the area, including the black-led organizations <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.everyaction.com\/zae4prEeKESHBy0MKXTIcQ2?fbclid=IwAR1mozFqHICrjSN7tPDAkjJAwnxdkw8VbVVI6xygTPscsvzC-lQfhEaey0U\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">Reclaim the Block<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.everyaction.com\/4omQDAR0oUiUagTu0EG-Ig2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">Black Visions<\/a>. By law, Ms. Honsey said, the fund is not able to regrant its funds to other organizations but is consulting with lawyers to see if there is some way to allocate the funds more broadly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThis is what we were built for, to be sure that we\u2019re supporting and freeing our people,\u201d she said. \u201cWhether it\u2019s this or it\u2019s Covid or it\u2019s just a regular day, so many of our families are being locked up or being separated.
