In the last week or so, I have read about happenings at several Ivy League schools, most predictably wretched, but at least one, at Cornell, showing much intelligence and concern for students. Let’s talk about four schools, in order of founding.
Harvard, America’s first university, finally relented and dropped its controversial policy restricting student rights to free association outside of their studies, namely the policy banning single-gender organizations, rather ironic for a university that banned female students for the first one-third of a millennium (more than 85%) of its history. While Harvard’s policy change is good, President Lawrence Bacow made it clear that he acted only because he had to: federal courts were going to force Harvard to do so.
As the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education Executive Director Robert Shibley put it “While this “Crimson Scare’ is finally over, lasting damage has been done to many cherished men’s and women’s groups that either shut down or were muscled into changing their policies against their wishes.” Meanwhile, Harvard’s administration and faculty maintains its freedom of association from students: it plans to use almost fully remote instruction this fall, even though students likely will gather in Cambridge to party and Zoom.
Moving on to Yale, President Peter Salovey appropriately rejected protesters who said the name “Yale” should be removed from the institution —-the ultimate expression of the Cancel Culture. Elihu Yale was a slave trader holding views considered reprehensible by most civilized American adults today, but helped fund an institution that has educated young people for more than three centuries. Salovey does not always show such common sense: In 2015, he and his aides refused to defend Erika Christakis for daring to suggest it was not Yale’s job to tell students what kind of Halloween costumes to wear, ultimately hounding her and husband Dr. Nicholas Christakis off campus. Yale was quick to take John Calhoun’s name off of a college, for he, too, owned slaves and defended the Southern way of life 180 years ago. Implicitly Yale is saying, “our current generation of Yalies is morally superior to the scum who founded, funded and nurtured us,” so we must erase recognition of their accomplishment. It shows a contempt for our history, heritage and ancestors that I find morally dubious.
Going to Princeton, more of the same. Woodrow Wilson’s name must go, even though he was good enough for Princeton to make him its president for eight years. It is true that Wilson was a racist and more: he said contemptuous things about immigrants from southern Europe, for example. Personally, I think he was one of the most overrated presidents in American history. Yet I think it was wrong for Princeton to show its ingratitude for a man important in the shaping of both that school and the nation. Again, the current anti-historical mood: “We are morally upright and our predecessors were scum” is, in my judgment, despicable, even though I equally believe that the evolution of moral standards over time to rejecting racial discrimination has been a wonderful thing.
Enough negativism. Let us turn to the last created Ivy League school, one more democratic and less elitist than the other Ivies (it is, horror of horrors, partly a public university): Cornell. Provost Michael Kotlikoff and President Martha Pollack have declared Cornell will reopen this fall for classes (see their superb July 1 Wall Street Journal op-ed). The school will track and isolate Covid-19 cases and take other measures to insure safety. They make a great point: if students did not return to traditional classes, Covid cases would probably not fall, maybe even rise —students would simply be living at least part of the day in a different environment. And large portions of the student body would return to campus anyway and, outside of class-time, party and socialize in a distinctly non-social distancing manner. Public health would be imperiled, not improved. Moreover, students need socialization, direct interaction with other students, etc. (See the recent superb statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics supporting in-class instruction of younger students). That is why I, celebrating my 80th birthday this fall, plan to return to teach in person unless apparatchiks at Ohio University successfully stop me.

Princeton University is removing Woodrow Wilson’s name from its School of Public and International Affairs. The school’s board of trustees said, “Wilson’s racist thinking and policies make him an inappropriate namesake.”

Princeton University will remove Woodrow Wilson’s name from its public policy school over “racist thinking and policies” the former president had championed, the university says.
The university’s Board of Trustees approved the name change on Friday. In a letter, trustees said long-standing questions over Wilson’s history of supporting segregationist policies were “made more urgent” by the recent high-profile killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks.
Trustees noted that Wilson infamously segregated the nation’s civil service after decades of racial integration. That legacy, trustees concluded, was not befitting a school geared toward public service.
“We have taken this extraordinary step because we believe that Wilson’s racist thinking and policies make him an inappropriate namesake for a school whose scholars, students, and alumni must be firmly committed to combatting the scourge of racism in all its forms,” the board said.
The school will be renamed the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, and the residential Woodrow Wilson College will be renamed First College, Princeton said.
Wilson had a long history with Princeton. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the university in 1879 and returned in 1890 as a professor, teaching for 12 years before becoming the university’s president in 1902.
Princeton appended Wilson’s name to the School of Public and International Affairs in 1948 when it added a graduate program. In addition to the public policy school and residential college, a prestigious alumni award also bears Wilson’s name.
Trustees say Wilson’s name will remain on the alumni award however, because it was endowed by a gift that came with a “legal obligation to name the prize for Wilson.”
Alongside the veneration have also been concerns by students over Wilson’s prominence on campus. In 2015, students protested, occupying the president’s office. In response, the trustees assembled a special committee to review concerns over Wilson’s legacy and provide recommendations.
The committee recommended that the school keep the 28th president’s name on both schools, even as it acknowledged that “Wilson indisputably opposed the idea of admitting black students to the Princeton of his time.”
But as anti-racist protests surged across the nation, the celebration of Wilson’s legacy at Princeton was one more longstanding debate to reenter the spotlight.
Students of the public policy school recently sent a letter, dated June 22, demanding, among other things, a name change.
“If Princeton saw fit to change the name of the School of Public and International Affairs in 1948 to reflect the politics of the midcentury United States, then it is time to change the name once again, over sixty years later, to reflect the morals and principles of our institutional identity in 2020,” the letter read.

Princeton University says it is to remove the name of former US President Woodrow Wilson from a building on its campus because of his racist beliefs and policies.
The move follows a wave of protests across the US sparked by the death of African-American man George Floyd.
Wilson was US president from 1913 to 1921 and helped to establish the League of Nations, a forerunner of the UN.
However, he supported segregation and imposed it on several federal agencies.
He also barred black students from Princeton while serving as university president and spoke approvingly of the Ku Klux Klan.
In a separate development on Saturday, the lower house of the Mississippi state congress passed a resolution that could remove the Confederate emblem – now viewed by many as a racist symbol – from the state flag.
Mississippi’s Republican Governor Tate Reeves tweeted that he would sign a bill to change the current flag if the legislation was approved, saying arguments over the 1894 emblem had become as divisive as the flag itself. The measure now moves to a Senate committee before going to the chamber.
Outlining the university’s decision on Saturday to remove Wilson’s name, Princeton president Christopher Eisgruber said in a statement that “Wilson’s racism was significant and consequential even by the standards of his own time”.
He said that the board of trustees had concluded that “Wilson’s racist views and policies make him an inappropriate namesake” for the university’s public policy school. A residential college will also lose Wilson’s name.

Mr Eisgruber said Princeton had honoured President Wilson “not because of, but without regard to or perhaps even in ignorance of, his racism”.
“That, however, is ultimately the problem,” he added. “Princeton is part of an America that has too often disregarded, ignored, or excused racism, allowing the persistence of systems that discriminate against black people.”

Earlier this month, Monmouth University in New Jersey removed Woodrow Wilson’s name from one of its most prominent buildings.
The depth of feeling that followed the death of George Floyd has led to renewed demands for an end to institutional racism. In the US and other countries statues of controversial historical figures have either been pulled down or taken down.
However, US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order calling for protesters who target monuments to be imprisoned.
The measure says anyone who damages a public statue must be prosecuted to the “fullest extent of the law”.

He added: ‘the trustees concluded that Woodrow Wilson’s racist thinking and policies make him an inappropriate namesake for a school or college whose scholars, students, and alumni must stand firmly against racism in all its forms.’

Wilson served as president from 1913 to 1921, during the period following Reconstruction that is known as the nadir of American race relations.
A Democrat, he oversaw progressive policies and led the nation in World War I, as well as establishing the UN-precursor League of Nations.
He was also the first southerner to be elected president after the Civil War, and oversaw the segregation of the federal government.
In a July 1913 letter to a civil rights activist, Wilson defended the segregation of government offices, arguing that it removed ‘friction’ between the races.
Famously during Wilson’s presidency, D. W. Griffith’s film The Birth of a Nation, which celebrated the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, was the first motion picture to be screened in the White House.
The film also quotes Wilson’s historical scholarship on the KKK, but after seeing it Wilson disavowed the movie, saying he had been ‘unaware of the character of the play before it was presented.’

Wilson had deep ties to Princeton, where he studied as an undergraduate, and later became president of the university before going on to become the governor of New Jersey and U.S. president.
In 2016, Princeton’s board rejected activist demands to remove Wilson’s name. opting instead to take steps to highlight troublesome aspects of his administration.
Eisgruber cited the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Rayshard Brooks as the reason for reconsidering the move. All were black people who died in encounters with police or civilians.
‘This searing moment in American history has made clear that Wilson’s racism disqualifies him’ as a role model, he said.
‘Wilson’s racism was significant and consequential even by the standards of his own time,’ Eisgruber said, adding that the former president’s segregationist policies ‘make him an especially inappropriate namesake for a public policy school.’
Princeton’s public policy school will now be known as the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, Eisgruber said.
Princeton had already planned to close Wilson College and retire its name after opening two new residential colleges currently under construction but will change the name to First College immediately.

Eisgruber said the conclusions ‘may seem harsh to some’ since Wilson is credited with having ‘remade Princeton, converting it from a sleepy college into a great research university,’ and he went on to become president and receive a Nobel Prize.
But while Princeton honored Wilson despite or perhaps even in ignorance of his views, that is part of the problem, Eisgruber said.
‘Princeton is part of an America that has too often disregarded, ignored, or excused racism, allowing the persistence of systems that discriminate against Black people,’ he said.
Four years ago, a 10-member committee gathered input from Wilson scholars and more than 600 submissions from alumni, faculty and the public before concluding that Wilson´s accomplishments merited commemoration, so long as his faults were also candidly recognized.
The committee report also said using his name ‘implies no endorsement of views and actions that conflict with the values and aspirations of our times.’
Earlier in the week, Monmouth University of New Jersey removed Wilson´s name from one of its most prominent buildings, citing efforts to increase diversity and inclusiveness.
The superintendent of the Camden school district also announced plans to rename Woodrow Wilson High School, one of the district’s two high schools.

]]>Ivy league Princeton University has announced it will remove President Woodrow Wilson’s name from the institution’s School of Public and International Affairs due to his history of racism.
In a statement released Saturday, the university president, Christopher Eisgruber, said the decision came after a “thorough, deliberative process”, five years after a group of student activists occupied his office in protest against the faculty’s dedication to the controversial 28th president.
The removal of Wilson’s name from the faculty – which will now be known as the School of Public and International Affairs – comes as many institutions across the US are facing protests and campaigns over controversial dedications and monuments.
The movement, which has seen statues of Confederate figures targeted as well as those of figures like Christopher Columbus and Spanish conquistadors, is part of a wide-ranging national debate over racism, sparked by the killing of George Floyd, who was African American, by a white police officer in Minneapolis.
In a statement, Princeton’s trustees said they had considered “whether it is acceptable for this University’s school of public affairs to bear the name of a racist who segregated the nation’s civil service after it had been integrated for decades”.
It was, they added, “a question … made more urgent by the recent killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and Rayshard Brooks, which have served as tragic reminders of the ongoing need for all of us to stand against racism and for equality and justice”.
Wilson is credited with improving educational standards at Princeton and he was honored with the creation of a faculty dedicated to public and international affairs studies, as well as a residential complex.
While he is remembered as a progressive, internationalist statesman, Wilson’s reputation is clouded by his racist policies in other areas of government when he was president from 1913 to 1921.
Wilson segregated federal workers in Washington DC, blocked a proposal to include racial equality as a founding principle in the League of Nations, and hosted White House screenings of the racist 1915 film Birth of a Nation, which celebrated the founding of the Ku Klux Klan. He was seen as accepting of brutal racial segregation in the south as a way of keeping the peace.
In the New York Times in 2015, the lawyer Gordon Davis, whose grandfather was demoted in his civil service career as part of a systematic purge of the federal government, wrote that Wilson “was not just a racist”.
“He believed in white supremacy as government policy, so much so that he reversed decades of racial progress. But we would be wrong to see this as a mere policy change; in doing so, he ruined the lives of countless talented African Americans and their families,” Davis wrote.
In his announcement, Eisgruber said the steps – Wilson’s name will also be removed from halls of residence – were a necessary reckoning, but only part of the picture of dealing with racism, both past and present.
“These are not the only steps our University is taking to combat the realities and legacy of racism, but they are important ones,”’ Eisgruber said, adding that he hoped the changes would provide “a firm foundation to pursue the mission of teaching, research, and service that has defined our highest aspirations and generated our greatest achievements throughout our history and today”.

“We have taken this extraordinary step because we believe that Wilson’s racist thinking and policies make him an inappropriate namesake for a school whose scholars, students and alumni must be firmly committed to combatting the scourge of racism in all its forms,” Princeton’s Board of Trustees said in a statement.
Princeton’s board said its members voted to change the names Friday amid calls to cut ties with Wilson, an alumnus who served as the school’s president prior to becoming the nation’s 28th in 1913.
The Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs has been renamed the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, and the set-to-be-shuttered Wilson College will now be known as First College. Both buildings are located on the university’s campus in Princeton, New Jersey.
“Identifying a political leader as the namesake for a public policy school inevitably suggests that the honoree is a role model for those who study in the school,” Princeton’s board said in the statement. “We must therefore ask whether it is acceptable for this University’s school of public affairs to bear the name of a racist who segregated the nation’s civil service after it had been integrated for decades.”
Wilson, a Virginian, graduated from Princeton in 1879. He served as the school’s president and governor of New Jersey before entering the White House ahead of World War I erupting.
Elected to two terms as U.S. president, Wilson was criticized during and after his Democratic administration for pushing racist policies such as segregation of the federal government workforce. He also infamously held a screening at the White House for “Birth of a Nation,” a 1915 film glorifying the Ku Klux Klan, making it the first motion picture ever screened within the president’s residence. He is also quoted on text cards a few times in the silent film as well.
“Princeton is doing the right thing by firmly separating itself from the Woodrow Wilson legacy,” said Michael Beschloss, a presidential historian who has written about Wilson.
Princeton has faced heightened calls to ditch Wilson’s name since 2015, and the board said its decision was sparked in part by several recent incidents in which African Americans were killed by police officers.
“This question has been made more urgent by the recent killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks, which have served as tragic reminders of the ongoing need for all of us to stand against racism and for equality and justice,” the board said. “Our commitment to those values must be clear and unequivocal. We believe that the continued use of Wilson’s name on a school of public affairs does not reflect those values and thereby impedes the School’s and the University’s capacity to pursue their missions.”

Friday’s statement by the board of trustees was shared with the Princeton community by Princeton President Christopher L. Eisgruber.
“On my recommendation, the board voted to change the names of both the School of Public and International Affairs and Wilson College,” Eisgruber wrote. “As you will see from the board’s statement, the trustees concluded that Woodrow Wilson’s racist thinking and policies make him an inappropriate namesake for a school or college whose scholars, students, and alumni must stand firmly against racism in all its forms.”
The board had previously considered removing Wilson’s name in 2016 after a group of student activists occupied the university president’s office months earlier, Eisgruber noted.
But a review committee chose to keep the name, recommending instead a “number of reforms to make this University more inclusive and more honest about its history,” the president said in his email Saturday.
The decision to reconsider came in the wake of deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and Rayshard Brooks, which have sparked nationwide protests.

The university had already planned to close Wilson College and retire the name as it builds two new residential colleges but decided the course of action would be to accelerate the retirement of the name.
Presidential historian Michael Beschloss wrote on Twitter that “Princeton is doing the right thing by firmly separating itself from the Woodrow Wilson legacy.”
In a second tweet, he posted a screenshot of a quote from the racist film, “Birth of a Nation,” in which Wilson praised the Ku Klux Klan.

Sam Wang, a professor of neuroscience at the university, also praised the decision as did several students.
“He was a consequential figure in our nation’s history and in building Princeton University. But his racism, unacceptable even during his lifetime, was too much,” Wang tweeted.
Chaya Crowder, a doctoral candidate at the university, wrote on Twitter that the renaming is “a product of years of dedicated organizing by students activists.”
“It took too long and is absolutely the [bare] minimum, but the removal of the woodrow wilson name is a direct result of the work of the BJL,” student Josiah Gouker posted, referring to the student activist organization the Black Justice League.
“We need to continue that work,” Gouker tweeted.

“The trustees conclude that Woodrow Wilson’s racist thinking and policies make him an inappropriate namesake for a school or college whose scholars, students, and alumni must firmly stand against racism in all its forms,” the statement read.
The trustees voted Friday to remove the name of the public policy school, which will hence be known as The Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, while the college will simply be called First College.
The Wilson College was set to close in two years following the construction of two new residential colleges, but Eisgruber did not want to make students “identify with the name of a racist president” during that time.

Protests over the New Jersey Ivy League school’s name have been ongoing since 2015 when students occupied the president’s office and demanded Wilson’s name be removed from Princeton buildings. The university responded by forming a committee to study Wilson’s legacy at the school.
While the committee initially recommended a number of reforms, the names were left on the buildings. In the aftermath of George Floyd’s death on May 25, as well as in the wake of nationwide protests against police brutality that followed, Princeton’s trustees agreed to revisit the matter.
“Princeton is part of an America that has too often disregarded, ignored, or excused racism, allowing the persistence of systems that discriminate against Black people,” the statement continued. “When Derek Chauvin knelt for nearly nine minutes on George Floyd’s neck while bystanders recorded his cruelty, he might have assumed that the system would disregard, ignore, or excuse his conduct, as it had done in response to past complaints against him.”
The trustees cited Wilson’s “segregationist policies,” by which he segregated multiple federal agencies and his Cabinet after decades of integration following Reconstruction. The New York Times noted that while Wilson may not have led the segregationist efforts, he “doubled down” when challenged on the topic and rationalized segregation as a “strategy to keep racial peace.”
Wilson also blocked a Japanese proposal to include racial equality as a founding principle to the League of Nations, Politico has reported.

Monmouth University took a similar step earlier this month by removing Wilson’s name from its main campus building. Wilson Hall will be renamed The Great Hall at Shadow Lawn and refitted as a community space, with the goal of making it “more inviting to students,” the New Jersey university said.
The name change has already drawn criticism from alumni.
A prominent Princeton alum reached out to Fox News, saying: “Chris Eisgruber had until now been a rare academic leader willing to stand up against the woke leftist mobs overrunning America’s college campuses. In the minds of many, his name was synonymous with academic freedom and rigor.”
“Now he’s just another campus coward, too terrified of the mob to make rational decisions. I’m furious about this, even though Woodrow Wilson was a terrible human being.”

The trustees acknowledged that the decision to change the names might seem “harsh,” but remain committed to preserving Wilson’s record “in all of its considerable complexity,” they said.
