]]>White House adviser Peter Navarro was seemingly cut off by CNN host Jake Tapper during an episode of “State of the Union” on Sunday after the two got into a heated debate about the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak.
The interview lasted for several minutes with Tapper giving Navarro the floor to speak at the beginning of the sitdown. Things escalated quickly, however, and the exchange was abruptly shut down after the conversation devolved into a political fight.
“I’m not giving you ten minutes to do this,” Tapper said at one point as Navarro walked him through a decision timeline. The former ABC White House correspondent then began continually attacking President Trump and periodically interrupted Navarro to refute his points.
“This is not fair, Jake. You’re constantly interrupting me and you’re not letting me talk,” Navarro shot back as the two continued. When Tapper said he was dodging the question, Navarro replied, “You just don’t like the answer.”
Eventually, Tapper accused the president of not being transparent with the public and asked Navarro why the government hasn’t been more open about COVID-19.
“Why wasn’t the president straightforward with the American people?” he asked. “He was straightforward,” Navarro replied. “You’re cherry-picking…You just don’t want to listen, Jake.”
Tapper claimed Trump “knew [COVID] was deadlier than the flu” and “was lying to the American public two weeks later.”
Navarro flipped the script and accused CNN of lying to the American people, which led Tapper to end the interview.
“You’re not honest with the American people,” Navarro replied. “CNN is not honest with the American people. Do you want to go there? We can do that.”
Tapper then thanked him for coming on and said public mockery and shaming of CNN will not change the network’s style of reporting — just as Navarro was saying, “I answered your question.”

“Okay. Peter Navarro, thank you so much. I appreciate your time today,” Tapper concluded. “And I would just like to remind the American people watching that the United States has less than 5 percent of the world’s population, and the United States has more than 20 percent of the world’s coronavirus deaths. ]]>FBI Agent Peter Strzok and his FBI Crossfire Hurricane unit were focused on the White House during President Trump’s inauguration celebration, so much so that the “angry” agent complained he was kept out of the loop on a bureau counter-intelligence briefing there.
Mr. Strzok, who would later be fired for his anti-Trump messages to FBI lawyer Lisa Page, erupted the day after Mr. Trump became president, according to newly released emails obtained by Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog in Washington.
Mr. Strzok said in an email to his boss, counter-intelligence chief Bill Priestap, he could have folded the FBI briefing into his strategy for investigating Trump associates.
“I heard from [redacted] about the WH CI briefing routed from [redacted],” Mr. Strzok said. “I am angry that Jen [colleague Jennifer Boone] did not at least cc: me, as my branch has pending investigative matters there, this brief may play into our investigative strategy, and I would like the ability to have visibility and provide thoughts/counsel to you in advance of the briefing. This is one of the reasons why I raised the issue of lanes/responsibilities that I did when you asked her to handle WH detailee interaction.”
The afternoon and night before the inauguration, a bevy of heavily redacted emails were exchanged by Mr. Strzok and other high-ranking counter intelligence officials.
“These documents suggest that President Trump was targeted by the [then-director James] Comey FBI as soon as he stepped foot in the Oval Office,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.
By inauguration day, the FBI had reversed its decision to close a case on retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Mr. Trump’s national security adviser. Agents were examining his phone calls during the transition with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Three days later, Mr. Strzok would travel to the White House to interview Mr. Flynn, who would pled guilty in December 2017 to lying. The Trump Justice Department moved in May to drop the case, citing undisclosed FBI files that would have helped Mr. Flynn’s case.
Judicial Watch said the Strzok conversation was among 136 pages of emails–––some heavily redacted––– released by the FBI based on an original December 2017 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) submission for all Strzok-Page messages.
The release contains other Strzok missives.
He disputed a story in January 2017 in the British Independent that said Christopher Steele, author of the influential and ultimately discredited dossier, suspected there was an FBI “cabal” which prioritized the Hillary Clinton email probe over the Trump-Russia matter.
“Of course not accurate (the coverup/cabal nonsense),” Mr. Strzok wrote to agent Michael Kortan, assistant director for public affairs, and Ms. Page. “Is that question gaining traction anywhere else.”
Mr. Strzok headed the probe into Mrs. Clinton’s email abuses, then switched to directing Crossfire Hurricane.
Mr. Steele, a former British intelligence officer paid by Democrats, leveled over a dozen conspiracy claims against Mr. Trump and aides. None proved true, yet Mr. Strzok and other agents relied heavily on the document to guide their inquiry.
Amid the Flynn probe, Mr. Strzok sent an email to Ms. Page joking about Mr. Kislyak’s heft.
“Andy [deputy FBI Director McCabe] wasn’t kidding about Ambo’s size,” he said.
That May, Mr. Trump fired Mr. Comey. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein then appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel. In March 2019, he reported he did not find a Trump-Russia election conspiracy.

Dr. Anthony Fauci speaks to how personal responsibility and social distancing is the key to ending the spread of the coronavirus.

WASHINGTON – Peter Navarro, a senior trade adviser to President Donald Trump, has taken aim at Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert and a member of the president’s coronavirus task force.
Navarro wrote an opinion piece in USA TODAY that was initially published Tuesday night – and then the next morning in print – as an “opposing view” to a newspaper editorial that hailed Fauci a “national treasure” and that said efforts by President Donald Trump or his team to muzzle Fauci would be hazardous.
Bill Sternberg, USA TODAY’s editorial page editor, said editors approached Navarro about writing the opposing view. The newspaper has a tradition of offering opposing views to its editorials. Some of the comments Navarro made echoed ones he had made earlier about Fauci.
The White House, which had not repudiated Navarro’s earlier comments, sought to distance itself from Navarro’s opinion piece, with director of strategic communications Alyssa Farah writing on Twitter that it was “the opinion of Peter alone.” Trump has insisted he has a “very good relationship” with Fauci but has also criticized him. However, on Wednesday Trump said of the Navarro piece, “he shouldn’t be doing that.”

The following is a fact check by USA TODAY on what was written by Navarro, who directs the White House Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy.
NAVARRO CLAIM: Dr. Anthony Fauci has a good bedside manner with the public, but he has been wrong about everything I have interacted with him on.
In late January, when I was making the case on behalf of the president to take down the flights from China, Fauci fought against the president’s courageous decision – which might well have saved hundreds of thousands of American lives.
FACTS: Trump and his supporters have touted the restrictions on travel from China as a travel ban but the move stopped short of that. As Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told reporters Jan. 31, the country was denying entry to foreign nationals, “other than immediate family of U.S. citizens and permanent residents, who have traveled in China within the last 14 days.”
In addition, experts said there isn’t enough data to conclude the restrictions made a significant difference. A study in the Journal Science found the various travel limitations across the globe helped slow the spread of the pandemic but more was needed to contain it.
In fact, on Jan. 24, a week before the implementation of travel restrictions, the first two COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the U.S. from travelers who had returned from Wuhan, China, where the outbreak is suspected of originating. Although Fauci and other public health officials were initially skeptical of travel bans because of concerns that they might limit the movement of health professionals, he later backed the decision.

NAVARRO CLAIM: When I warned in late January in a memo of a possibly deadly pandemic, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases was telling the news media not to worry.
When I was working feverishly on behalf of the president in February to help engineer the fastest industrial mobilization of the health care sector in our history, Fauci was still telling the public the China virus was low risk.
FACTS: There’s no evidence of a large-scale effort by the Trump administration to mobilize supplies for the pandemic as early as February, although experts contend that a forceful response then would likely have limited the spread and saved lives.
Trump said little in public about the virus during that time period and downplayed the threat. On Feb. 10, he predicted that the coronavirus would be gone by April when the weather gets warmer and said the virus will “miraculously” go away.. Congress passed the first meaningful spending bill to address the crisis March 4 – an $8.3 billion package to ramp up testing that was more than triple the amount the White House initially requested.
And it wasn’t until March 13 that Trump declared a national emergency.
In a meeting with the USA TODAY editorial board on Feb. 17, Fauci did say the risk for Americans appeared “relatively low” but he warned that could change and officials needed to be prepared.
“As of today, on the 17th of February, the risk is really relatively low,” he said. “But we, the public health officials, have to take this seriously enough to be prepared for it changing and there being a pandemic.”
NAVARRO CLAIM: When we were building new mask capacity in record time, Fauci was flip-flopping on the use of masks.
FACTS: From the outset, Fauci said people who were contagious should wear masks but, like others and consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, did not say everyone should wear masks, even if they didn’t have symptoms. On Feb. 17, weeks before the coronavirus was declared a pandemic, Fauci told USA TODAY that “in the United States, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to wear a mask.”
At the time, testing was almost non-existent and the nature of the virus was still being determined. Fauci has since said that part of the reason for his position was to tamp down a public rush that would have further exacerbated a shortage of masks. On Feb. 29, Surgeon General Jerome Adams tweeted that people should “STOP BUYING MASKS” because they had not been shown to be effective in preventing the general public from getting the virus and a rush to buy them was leaving healthcare providers without them.
More recently, Fauci and other public health experts have been urging mask-wearing as a means to help prevent the spread of the virus – while continuing to urge frequent hand washing and social distancing..
NAVARRO CLAIM: And when Fauci was telling the White House Coronavirus Task Force that there was only anecdotal evidence in support of hydroxychloroquine to fight the virus, I confronted him with scientific studies providing evidence of safety and efficacy. A recent Detroit hospital study showed a 50% reduction in the mortality rate when the medicine is used in early treatment.
FACTS: Most medical studies have shown hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug, not only to be generally ineffective against COVID-19 but to also pose harmful side effects. The Food and Drug Administration warns on its web site that those threats include serious heart rhythm problems and other safety issues, including blood and lymph system disorders, kidney injuries, and liver problems and failure.
The Henry Ford study Navarro refers to has been criticized by a number of medical experts because patients who benefited also were given a steroid known to help those suffering from the infection and because the study was observational..
NAVARRO CLAIM: Now Fauci says a falling mortality rate doesn’t matter when it is the single most important statistic to help guide the pace of our economic reopening. The lower the mortality rate, the faster and more we can open.
FACTS: In a July 8 press conference with Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., Fauci described the declining death rate as a “false narrative (because) there’s so many other things that are very dangerous and bad about this virus. Don’t get yourself into false complacency.”
The death rate began declining in mid-April but has been ticking up again recently, a result of a surge in cases across Sun Belt states such as Florida, Texas and Arizona – an increase Fauci and other medical experts cited as a risk.
In addition, while treatments have helped lower the death rate, doctors are finding that the virus carries long-term complications for a significant percentage of patients, especially those with underlying conditions.

]]>White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said in a new opinion piece that Dr. Anthony Fauci has been wrong “about everything I have interacted with him on.”
The public denunciation of a fellow administration official prompted the White House to distance itself from Mr. Navarro’s comments approximately 12 hours after the piece first published.
Mr. Navarro pointed to past comments from Dr. Fauci, the federal government’s top infectious diseases expert, in which he fought President Trump’s early push to shut down travel from China and downplayed the threat of the coronavirus in January.
“Now Fauci says a falling mortality rate doesn’t matter when it is the single most important statistic to help guide the pace of our economic reopening. The lower the mortality rate, the faster and more we can open,” Mr. Navarro said in an opinion piece published Tuesday evening in USA Today.
“So when you ask me whether I listen to Dr. Fauci’s advice, my answer is: only with skepticism and caution,” he said.
A White House spokeswoman said Wednesday morning the op-ed didn’t go through the normal clearance processes “and is the opinion of Peter alone.”
“@realDonaldTrump values the expertise of the medical professionals advising his Administration,” Alyssa Farah, the White House director of strategic communications, said on Twitter.
Doug Heye, a former House Republican leadership aide, said on Twitter, “If Navarro is not fired, then the normal White House clearance process is a wink and a nod.”
Mr. Navarro’s on-the-record denunciation of Dr. Fauci came a day after the White House denied that officials were leaking information as part of a smear campaign to undermine him.
Asked who the public can trust during the current pandemic, Dr. Fauci said on Tuesday that people can trust “respected medical authorities” for the most part.
“I believe I’m one of them, so I think you can trust me,” he said at an event hosted by Georgetown University.

]]>Navarro said Fauci pushed back on a travel ban on foreign citizens coming from China and repeatedly changed his mind on the wearing of masks in public. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had initially advised against wearing masks in public unless sick or caring for the sick, before later advising all members of the public to wear face coverings.
Navarro‘s op-ed was a particularly overt rebuke from a member of an administration that has shown signs of growing discontent with Fauci. Fauci, meanwhile, has strong support among the public and lawmakers from both parties.
Trump has criticized Fauci — a career health official who has served as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984 — when he offers advice that goes against the president’s political or economic agenda. He called Fauci‘s concern with a swift reopening of the economy in May “surprising“ and “unacceptable,” and pushed back on Fauci‘s caution toward reopening schools.
Trump retweeted messages on Monday lambasting his own public health officials as misleading the public about keeping schools closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
“Everyone is lying,” said one of the tweets, written by the conservative former game show personality Chuck Woolery. “The CDC, Media, Democrats, our Doctors, not all but most, that we are told to trust. I think it’s all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I’m sick of it.”
Those remarks were followed by condemnation from Adm. Brett Giroir, the administration’s coronavirus testing czar, who defended public health experts.
“Look, we may occasionally make mistakes based on the information we have, but none of us lie,” Giroir said. “We are completely transparent with the American people.”

]]>White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Sunday slammed likely Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden for trying to copy President Trump’s “Buy American” agenda in a newly-released economic plan.
“Poll-driven plagiarist,” Mr. Navarro said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.” “I was astonished by that, given Joe Biden’s history.”
“He’s just blatantly ripping off the president’s ‘Buy American’ agenda,” Mr. Navarro said, saying that the president’s effort on that front dates to Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign launch in June 2015.
Mr. Biden last week introduced a $700 billion economic plan that contains a number of “Buy American” provisions — an issue Mr. Trump has tried to emphasize in his first term in office.
The Biden campaign has said that Mr. Trump has had four years to put “Buy American” policies but has failed to do so.
Mr. Biden came under significant criticism over allegations that he plagiarized a speech from British politician Neil Kinnock during his failed 1988 presidential bid.

]]>One of President Trump’s few major Silicon Valley backers in the 2016 campaign reportedly expects to abandon him in 2020.
According to a Thursday evening report in the Wall Street Journal, venture capitalist Peter Thiel likely will sit out the race this time around because he sees the chance of a Trump victory as slim.
The Journal, citing “people familiar with the matter” reported that Mr. Thiel “has soured” on the president’s prospects in recent weeks because of the state of the economy and expected double-digit unemployment in November.
Mr. Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal Holdings, spoke at the Republican National Convention in 2016, calling Mr. Trump the ideal man to rebuild the economy, He also donated $1.25 million to the Trump campaign and related groups.
But he hasn’t given any money to Trump groups this year and, according to the Journal’s sources, does not plan to do so.
Now, according to “one person who speaks to Mr. Thiel about politics,” he describes the Trump campaign as the “S.S. Minnow,” from the shipwreck TV show “Gilligan’s Island.”
Nevertheless, the Journal reported, Mr. Thiel considered Democrat Joseph R. Biden as too much of a liberal retread to support and does not plan to switch or publicly break with Mr. Trump.
He also hasn’t ruled out an unenthusiastic vote for Mr. Trump, the Journal reported.
The billionaire who publicly abandoned Silicon Valley as an intolerant den of groupthink is likely instead, “people familiar with the matter” told the Journal, to donate big to Republican House and Senate candidates to keep at least part of the government in GOP hands.

]]>White House trade adviser Peter Navarro indicated on “The Story” Monday that President Trump had decided to terminate the China trade deal before claiming his comments were taken “wildly out of context” as stock market futures tumbled more than 400 points.
Navarro and host Martha MacCallum were discussing claims in a forthcoming book by former National Security Adviser John Bolton that Trump delayed imposing sanctions on China over its policy of interning Uighur Muslims so as not to jeopardize a trade deal with Beijing.
“Do you think that the president — he obviously really wanted to hang on to this trade deal as much as possible and he wanted them [China] to make good on the promises because there had been progress made on that trade deal,” host Martha MacCallum told Navarro. “But given everything that’s happened … is that over?”
“It’s over,” Navarro told host Martha MacCallum.
NAVARRO BLASTS BOLTON BOOK AS ‘DEP SWAMP REVENGE PORN’
“Here’s, I think, the turning point,” he explained. “They came here on January 15th to sign that trade deal, and that was a full two months after they knew the virus was out and about.
“It was a time when they had already sent hundreds of thousands of people to this country to spread that virus, and it was just minutes after wheels up when that plane took off that we began to hear about this pandemic.”
Navarro went on to compare China’s actions to the Japanese government holding peace talks with the administration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in late 1941, weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
In a statement late Monday, Navarro said: ““My comments have been taken wildly out of context. They had nothing at all to do with the Phase I trade deal, which continues in place. I was simply speaking to the lack of trust we now have of the Chinese Communist Party after they lied about the origins of the China virus and foisted a pandemic upon the world.”
Trump also tweeted Monday evening, “The China Trade Deal is fully intact. Hopefully they will continue to live up to the terms of the Agreement!”
The trade agreement was meant to ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies following a trade war that stemmed from accusations by Washington that China had for decades been manipulating its currency and stealing U.S. trade secrets.
Last month, Trump said that although the deal was just kicking in, he felt “very differently” about it since the onset of the coronavirus outbreak in America. However, he stopped short of terminating the deal at the time.
“It just seems to mean less to me,” Trump told reporters at the time. “It was very exciting, one of the biggest deals ever made, but once the virus came in, I said, ‘How did they let that happen?’”
The administration has been mulling avenues to possibly punish or seek financial compensation from China for what it sees as withholding information about the virus.

“I think that everybody here inside the perimeter and around this country now understands that China lied, and Americans died,” Navarro said Monday
The trade adviser added that the November election will likely boil down to three key issues “jobs, China, and law and order,” and said that Trump’s decision to end his long-touted trade deal proves that he “runs the table on all three of those, especially China.”
