]]>A new ‘orthocoronavirane’ disease is on the rise, and health experts believe it has something to do with the coronavirus. Doctors from Banner Health in Arizona have confirmed a surge in cases of a multisystem inflammatory syndrome observed in children in the area.
The disease is called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) and is said to be rare and potentially fatal. The illness involves inflammation of major organs such as the heart, lungs, kidney, brain, eyes, and other gastrointestinal organs.
According to Dr. David Moromisato, the chief medical officer at Banner Desert and Cardon Children’s medical centers in Mesa, all pediatric clinics around the state are currently on the lookout for warning signs of MIS-C.
He adds that children, parents, and caregivers must know signs that point to the disease because it could get serious fast and can sometimes even lead to death.
According to physicians, early evidence shows that the multisystem inflammatory disease tends to affect young children to adolescents. Furthermore, the age range of the children affected is from two to early adulthood.
Is the ‘Orthocoronaviranae’ Inflammatory Disease Related to COVID-19?
Doctors speculate that it is, although there is no true evidence for it yet. Dr. Josh Koch, the division chief of pediatric clinical care medicine from Phoenix Children’s Hospital, says that they are seeing markers of coronavirus in the pediatric patients. Still, a definitive association cannot be concluded yet.
However, what researchers do know is that the majority of the cases they’ve seen have indeed been infected with the virus at some point. Although children, in general, may appear as capable of fighting off COVID-19 pretty well, doctors say MIS-C could be a post-infection inflammatory consequence to the disease.
Dr. Koch says they see cases in children wherein COVID-19 hits them hard, and four to six weeks later, the inflammatory syndrome shows up. He thinks it could be possible that they’ve had the infection for a while, without symptoms or possibly exhibiting just mild ones. Then, after the multisystem inflammatory response shows up, they suddenly test positive for COVID-19.
As of May 28, there had been no cases of MIS-C in Arizona, says Dr. Moramisato. After that, patients with presenting symptoms of the disease started appearing in Phoenix and Tucson. He adds that even New York has about 100 cases, which is quite a small number when compared to adult patients.
What are the Warning Signs of MIS-C?
Symptoms of the inflammatory syndrome in children include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, rashes, neck pain, swollen extremities, bloodshot eyes, red tongue, and cracked lips.
Moromisato says that evidence shows PCR tests for active coronavirus infection in these children mostly come out negative. However, serology tests for antibodies have mostly been positive, meaning they’ve had the infection sometime in the past.
Health experts warn that the disease may look like Kawasaki disease or toxic shock syndrome, but the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it is different. Dr. Koch says it seems to be a new disease, and parents must watch out for it as children ill with it could deteriorate very quickly.
Dr. Moromisato adds that if a child has a fever, is vomiting, has diarrhea, red eyes, and cracked lips, parents should seek medical attention immediately. The earlier the intervention for MIS-C, the better.

]]>RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Department of Health has reported the second confirmed case in the state of a pediatric inflammatory illness associated with the new coronavirus.
The department’s website on Monday showed a second case of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children in the Fairfax Health District, which includes Fairfax County and the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church.
No other details, including the age of the child, were provided.
Officials confirmed the first case in the same district last week, saying at the time that the child was recovering at home. On Monday, the Health Department reported almost 1,500 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to nearly 38,000.

To Dr. Heather Symons, Mother’s Day is just another day in the fight against the coronavirus.
Forced to leave her family for the day, Symons joined “America’s News HQ” Sunday for what started as an interview to provide an update on the coronavirus as a doctor on the front lines — but anchor Eric Shawn had a surprise waiting for the mom of four.
“We all have a responsibility to our patients to take care of them regardless of, you know, whether it’s a holiday, during the week, weekends, and this is my weekend to help take care of the patients on our oncology and bone-marrow transplantation service,” Symons began.
FOX NEWS HOSTS WISH THEIR MOMS A HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY
“I’m fortunate to have four really healthy kids, and on a day like today, I know that I’m even more fortunate to be able to eventually, at the end of a long day, go home and see them and spend the rest of the night with them.”
While Symons was speaking about her role as the clinical director of pediatric blood and marrow transplantation, in the hospital’s efforts to battle the virus, the screen split to her husband and four children at home who shared a surprise message for their mom live on air.
“Happy Mother’s Day! We love you so much,” one child yelled excitedly.
“Thank you for what you’re doing for the world and Johns Hopkins,” another chimed in.
“We wish you were home, but if you have to stay there, we understand,” her daughter added.
Symons became visibly emotional and promised to see her family as soon as she finished her shift.

Physicians in Philadelphia voiced careful optimism in coronavirus plasma transfusion therapy after a young COVID-19 client successfully recovered.
The Kid’s Health center of Philadelphia (CHOP) revealed the effective treatment, although medical professionals can not definitively say the plasma treatment was the sole reason behind recovery, according to a news outlet. The treatment is still in a speculative stage.

” It was kind of amazing when we had a patient who we wanted to treat that everyone activated and did the whole procedure really quickly,” Dr. David Teachey, a pediatric hematologist-oncologist at CHOP, told NBC10 It took roughly 40 hours from when the medical professionals initially drifted the treatment idea to the pediatric patient getting the plasma therapy, he added.
Plasma from recovered COVID-19 cases is transfused to critically ill COVID-19 patients, with the hope that the antibodies will assist the client fight or reduce the effects of the disease. The Red Cross said that as of April 20, it had delivered over 120 convalescent plasma products to healthcare facilities.
” This effort is still brand-new and the Red Cross along with our market partners are working ongoing to identify, qualify and collect more convalescent plasma donations to fulfill immediate patient requires in this quickly altering environment,” the Red Cross said in a declaration. “We anticipate to substantially increase collections in the coming days and weeks.”
