]]>White House adviser Peter Navarro was seemingly cut off by CNN host Jake Tapper during an episode of “State of the Union” on Sunday after the two got into a heated debate about the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak.
The interview lasted for several minutes with Tapper giving Navarro the floor to speak at the beginning of the sitdown. Things escalated quickly, however, and the exchange was abruptly shut down after the conversation devolved into a political fight.
“I’m not giving you ten minutes to do this,” Tapper said at one point as Navarro walked him through a decision timeline. The former ABC White House correspondent then began continually attacking President Trump and periodically interrupted Navarro to refute his points.
“This is not fair, Jake. You’re constantly interrupting me and you’re not letting me talk,” Navarro shot back as the two continued. When Tapper said he was dodging the question, Navarro replied, “You just don’t like the answer.”
Eventually, Tapper accused the president of not being transparent with the public and asked Navarro why the government hasn’t been more open about COVID-19.
“Why wasn’t the president straightforward with the American people?” he asked. “He was straightforward,” Navarro replied. “You’re cherry-picking…You just don’t want to listen, Jake.”
Tapper claimed Trump “knew [COVID] was deadlier than the flu” and “was lying to the American public two weeks later.”
Navarro flipped the script and accused CNN of lying to the American people, which led Tapper to end the interview.
“You’re not honest with the American people,” Navarro replied. “CNN is not honest with the American people. Do you want to go there? We can do that.”
Tapper then thanked him for coming on and said public mockery and shaming of CNN will not change the network’s style of reporting — just as Navarro was saying, “I answered your question.”

“Okay. Peter Navarro, thank you so much. I appreciate your time today,” Tapper concluded. “And I would just like to remind the American people watching that the United States has less than 5 percent of the world’s population, and the United States has more than 20 percent of the world’s coronavirus deaths. That is a fact. It does not matter how many times he insults CNN.”

]]>USA Today added a note to an op-ed written by White House trade adviser Peter Navarro published by the newspaper, saying that the Trump administration official’s op-ed criticizing Anthony Fauci

The editorial note written by USA Today editorial page editor Bill Sternberg was added to the online version of the opinion piece Wednesday evening.
Sternberg said the editorial board reached out to Navarro, who has been critical of infectious disease expert Fauci, to provide a response published as an “Opposing View” to pair with an editorial the board wrote praising Fauci as a “national treasure.”
“Navarro’s response echoed comments made to other news outlets in recent days. We felt it was newsworthy because it expanded on those comments, put an on-the-record name to the attacks on Fauci, and contradicted White House denials of an anti-Fauci campaign,” Sternberg said in the note added to the story, which was first published Tuesday morning.
“However, several of Navarro’s criticisms of Fauci — on the China travel restrictions, the risk from the coronavirus and falling mortality rates — were misleading or lacked context. As such, Navarro’s op-ed did not meet USA TODAY’s fact-checking standards,” he added.
Navarro’s scathing op-ed accused Fauci, a member of the White House coronavirus task force and the nation’s top infectious disease expert, of being “wrong about everything I have interacted with him on.”
Fauci responded in an interview with The Atlantic, telling the magazine he “can’t explain Peter Navarro.”
“He’s in a world by himself,” the doctor said.
Navarro’s public criticism came amid reports that the White House was aiming to discredit Fauci with a memo citing nearly a dozen comments he made about the pandemic that contradicted his later statements.
Fauci told The Atlantic efforts to discredit him by members of the Trump administration are “bizarre.”
“I cannot figure out in my wildest dreams why they would want to do that,” Fauci said. “I think they realize now that that was not a prudent thing to do, because it’s only reflecting negatively on them.”
He has also defended comments he made months ago that differed from recommendations he’s now making to the public, such as wearing a mask, noting that recommendations changed as more knowledge about the virus was learned.

]]>White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said in a new opinion piece that Dr. Anthony Fauci has been wrong “about everything I have interacted with him on.”
The public denunciation of a fellow administration official prompted the White House to distance itself from Mr. Navarro’s comments approximately 12 hours after the piece first published.
Mr. Navarro pointed to past comments from Dr. Fauci, the federal government’s top infectious diseases expert, in which he fought President Trump’s early push to shut down travel from China and downplayed the threat of the coronavirus in January.
“Now Fauci says a falling mortality rate doesn’t matter when it is the single most important statistic to help guide the pace of our economic reopening. The lower the mortality rate, the faster and more we can open,” Mr. Navarro said in an opinion piece published Tuesday evening in USA Today.
“So when you ask me whether I listen to Dr. Fauci’s advice, my answer is: only with skepticism and caution,” he said.
A White House spokeswoman said Wednesday morning the op-ed didn’t go through the normal clearance processes “and is the opinion of Peter alone.”
“@realDonaldTrump values the expertise of the medical professionals advising his Administration,” Alyssa Farah, the White House director of strategic communications, said on Twitter.
Doug Heye, a former House Republican leadership aide, said on Twitter, “If Navarro is not fired, then the normal White House clearance process is a wink and a nod.”
Mr. Navarro’s on-the-record denunciation of Dr. Fauci came a day after the White House denied that officials were leaking information as part of a smear campaign to undermine him.
Asked who the public can trust during the current pandemic, Dr. Fauci said on Tuesday that people can trust “respected medical authorities” for the most part.
“I believe I’m one of them, so I think you can trust me,” he said at an event hosted by Georgetown University.

]]>Navarro said Fauci pushed back on a travel ban on foreign citizens coming from China and repeatedly changed his mind on the wearing of masks in public. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had initially advised against wearing masks in public unless sick or caring for the sick, before later advising all members of the public to wear face coverings.
Navarro‘s op-ed was a particularly overt rebuke from a member of an administration that has shown signs of growing discontent with Fauci. Fauci, meanwhile, has strong support among the public and lawmakers from both parties.
Trump has criticized Fauci — a career health official who has served as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984 — when he offers advice that goes against the president’s political or economic agenda. He called Fauci‘s concern with a swift reopening of the economy in May “surprising“ and “unacceptable,” and pushed back on Fauci‘s caution toward reopening schools.
Trump retweeted messages on Monday lambasting his own public health officials as misleading the public about keeping schools closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
“Everyone is lying,” said one of the tweets, written by the conservative former game show personality Chuck Woolery. “The CDC, Media, Democrats, our Doctors, not all but most, that we are told to trust. I think it’s all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I’m sick of it.”
Those remarks were followed by condemnation from Adm. Brett Giroir, the administration’s coronavirus testing czar, who defended public health experts.
“Look, we may occasionally make mistakes based on the information we have, but none of us lie,” Giroir said. “We are completely transparent with the American people.”

]]>White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Sunday slammed likely Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden for trying to copy President Trump’s “Buy American” agenda in a newly-released economic plan.
“Poll-driven plagiarist,” Mr. Navarro said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.” “I was astonished by that, given Joe Biden’s history.”
“He’s just blatantly ripping off the president’s ‘Buy American’ agenda,” Mr. Navarro said, saying that the president’s effort on that front dates to Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign launch in June 2015.
Mr. Biden last week introduced a $700 billion economic plan that contains a number of “Buy American” provisions — an issue Mr. Trump has tried to emphasize in his first term in office.
The Biden campaign has said that Mr. Trump has had four years to put “Buy American” policies but has failed to do so.
Mr. Biden came under significant criticism over allegations that he plagiarized a speech from British politician Neil Kinnock during his failed 1988 presidential bid.

]]>White House trade adviser Peter Navarro indicated on “The Story” Monday that President Trump had decided to terminate the China trade deal before claiming his comments were taken “wildly out of context” as stock market futures tumbled more than 400 points.
Navarro and host Martha MacCallum were discussing claims in a forthcoming book by former National Security Adviser John Bolton that Trump delayed imposing sanctions on China over its policy of interning Uighur Muslims so as not to jeopardize a trade deal with Beijing.
“Do you think that the president — he obviously really wanted to hang on to this trade deal as much as possible and he wanted them [China] to make good on the promises because there had been progress made on that trade deal,” host Martha MacCallum told Navarro. “But given everything that’s happened … is that over?”
“It’s over,” Navarro told host Martha MacCallum.

“Here’s, I think, the turning point,” he explained. “They came here on January 15th to sign that trade deal, and that was a full two months after they knew the virus was out and about.
“It was a time when they had already sent hundreds of thousands of people to this country to spread that virus, and it was just minutes after wheels up when that plane took off that we began to hear about this pandemic.”
Navarro went on to compare China’s actions to the Japanese government holding peace talks with the administration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in late 1941, weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
In a statement late Monday, Navarro said: ““My comments have been taken wildly out of context. They had nothing at all to do with the Phase I trade deal, which continues in place. I was simply speaking to the lack of trust we now have of the Chinese Communist Party after they lied about the origins of the China virus and foisted a pandemic upon the world.”
Trump also tweeted Monday evening, “The China Trade Deal is fully intact. Hopefully they will continue to live up to the terms of the Agreement!”
The trade agreement was meant to ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies following a trade war that stemmed from accusations by Washington that China had for decades been manipulating its currency and stealing U.S. trade secrets.
Last month, Trump said that although the deal was just kicking in, he felt “very differently” about it since the onset of the coronavirus outbreak in America. However, he stopped short of terminating the deal at the time.
“It just seems to mean less to me,” Trump told reporters at the time. “It was very exciting, one of the biggest deals ever made, but once the virus came in, I said, ‘How did they let that happen?’”
The administration has been mulling avenues to possibly punish or seek financial compensation from China for what it sees as withholding information about the virus.
