]]>Native Chinese scholar and author Helen Raleigh said the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has finally “met its match” with the Trump administration, following a raid by federal agents on the consulate in Houston, Texas, suspected of harboring spies.
Raleigh, an immigration policy fellow at the Centennial Institute in Colorado, told Fox News the White House‘s aggressive stance has been a wake-up call for China’s government and is not something its officials are used to dealing with.
“The CCP believes the law of the jungle. ‘Might makes right,'” she explained. “So the Trump administration is the first foreign administration the CCP ever met that also believes the law of the jungle and is not afraid to confront the CCP. The people in Trump’s administration are willing to bear those costs.”
She added: “We can see that from the consulate closure, they knew China would retaliate, but they are willing to take that risk that nobody else in the world is willing to take. So the CCP has finally met its match.”
U.S. officials pried open the doors of the Chinese consulate in Houston on Friday and took over the building shortly after Chinese officials vacated the facility on orders from the federal government.
After the Chinese were ordered to vacate, the Houston Fire Department responded to fires at the courtyard of the building, which turned out to be an effort to destroy documents. Chinese officials refused to allow any first responders to enter to extinguish the fires, Fox 26 in Houston reported.

“There are a series of steps that the Trump administration has taken — particularly last week almost on a daily basis — related to new sanctions and new policy changes against the CCP,” Raleigh said. “But the biggest news was the closure of China’s consulate in Houston and then China retaliated, closing the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu.”
She then cited Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s speech about China this week and said he is leading a reversal in decades-old policy that championed the economic liberation of the Chinese people.
“He identified the problem in the U.S.-China relationship, which are the same problems that China has with the rest of the world,” Raleigh continued. “China has a very different political and ideological system, especially compared to free nations like the United States. For the past several decades, free nations mistakenly thought that as long as they keep engaging China, engaging the CCP, eventually with economic liberation — the CCP would change. The Chinese system would become a more liberal and open society like ours. Secretary Pompeo in his speech recognized that this assumption was wrong and it’s been wrong for several decades.”
She added: “This was not his first speech on the subject and it’s probably one of the only things that people from both parties can agree upon. That the past approach has failed. Sec. Pompeo summarized the Trump administration’s China policy in two words — ‘induce change.’ They want to induce a change of behaviors of the CCP.”
The administration wants to achieve this goal in two steps at the same time, Raleigh explained. The first step involved becoming very confrontational with the CCP in terms of trade negotiations, charges of espionage, the altering of visa policy and the closure of the consulate — all of which represented a “very dramatic, serious step.”
“They’ve basically matched the intensity of the Chinese aggressiveness,” she added. The second step would see China return to the negotiating table on various major issues.
Raleigh also touched upon how past U.S. administrations were unwilling to bear the cost of a confrontation with China until the most recent push from President Trump.

“In the past four decades, China has been very aggressively pressing the limits. It is single-minded. They want to become the sole world power and change the world order to fit China’s ideology,” she said. “Past administrations from George W. Bush to Barack Obama worried about the cost of confrontation — on the economic and military front. The cost of confronting them has become so much greater now that past administrations, as well as other countries, didn’t want to deal with it. Until the Trump administration [got involved].
“China is so powerful today, no matter which strategy the United States chooses, it’s going to come with a cost,” Raleigh added. “There’s no way to avoid a cost. So it’s really coming down to how much cost we are ready to bear. And keep in mind, when China and the U.S. confront each other, China bears cost too. Both countries need to calculate how much of a cost they are willing to bear.”

“Mount Rushmore is a symbol of white supremacy, of structural racism that’s still alive and well in society today,” Nick Tilsen, a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe and the president of NDN Collective, a local activist organization, told The Associated Press. “It’s an injustice to actively steal Indigenous people’s land then carve the white faces of the conquerors who committed genocide.”
Trump is set to visit the monument, carved into South Dakota’s Black Hills, for a Fourth of July celebration that will feature the first fireworks at the location in decades. It comes, however, during a period of fierce debate over statues and monuments that represent oppression or atrocities for some.
Mount Rushmore historian and writer Tom Griffith noted that its sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, was also a member of the Ku Klux Klan, which experienced a renaissance in the 1920s after the release of the pro-Klan historical epic film “Birth of a Nation.”
Native American activists have for years protested at the site for both what they view as the desecration of the Black Hills and the U.S. government’s forcible seizure of the land despite treaties protecting it. Members of United Native Americans, a group affiliated with the American Indian Movement (AIM), scaled and occupied the monument in the 1970s.
Quanah Brightman, the current leader of United Native Americans, told the AP the civil rights movement in the 1960s helped inspire the AIM a decade later and said he hoped the Black Lives Matter movement could inspire a similar resurgence among his community.
“What people find here is the story of America — it’s multidimensional, it’s complex,” Griffith told the AP. “It’s important to understand it was people just trying to do right as best they knew it then.”

]]>READING, England (CBS/AP) — Eyewitness News has learned one of the victims of a stabbing rampage that killed three people as they sat in a British park on a summer evening is from Philadelphia. Joe Ritchie-Bennett was one of three people killed Saturday in what British investigators are labeling an act of terror.
Ritchie-Bennett was a graduate of Father Judge High School. He lived in the United Kingdom for the past 15 years. His family still lives in Philadelphia.
His father, Robert Ritchie, told Eyewitness News, “The family is heartbroken they have lost their brilliant and loving son. This was senseless.”
A 25-year-old man who is believed to be the lone attacker was in custody, but officials said the motive for the carnage was unclear. Authorities said they were not looking for any other suspects and they did not raise Britain’s official terrorism threat level from “substantial.”
Ritchie-Bennett and two other people were killed and three others seriously wounded in the stabbing attack that came out of the blue Saturday in Forbury Gardens park in Reading, a town of 200,000 people 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of London.
“Motivation for this horrific act is far from certain,” said Neil Basu, Britain’s top counterterrorism police officer, as police forensics officers combed the park for evidence.
Chief Constable John Campbell of Thames Valley Police said officers were called to reports of stabbings just before 7 p.m. and arrived to find a “horrific” scene. He said a suspect was apprehended within five minutes.

Basu said “incredibly brave” unarmed officers detained a 25-year-old local man at the scene. Police said they did not believe there was any further danger to the public.
Police have not identified the suspect, but Britain’s national news agency, Press Association, and other media outlets named him as Khairi Saadallah, a Libyan asylum-seeker living in Reading.
A Reading man of that name who is the same age as the suspect was sentenced to two months in prison last year for assaulting an emergency worker. The same man was also charged last year with assaulting a judge who had sentenced him.
The BBC reported that Saadallah was investigated by British security services last year over concerns he planned to travel abroad to join a jihadi group, but that he was not determined to be a major threat.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who met security officials, police and senior ministers on Sunday for an update on the investigation, said he was “appalled and sickened” by the attack.
“If there are lessons that we need to learn” or legal changes needed to prevent such attacks, “then we will learn those lessons and we will not hesitate to take action where necessary,” Johnson said.
Police officers patrolled cordons on the roads leading to the park on Sunday, and blue-and-white tents were erected near the attack site. Overnight, heavily armed officers entered an apartment about a mile away, and a loud bang was heard.
Notes and bunches of flowers had been left Sunday by the police tape in tribute to the victims. One of the people killed was identified as James Furlong, a teacher in the nearby English town of Wokingham.
“There are no words that anyone can say to express how horrible and senseless this was,” one said. “Our prayers are with all the victims and their families and friends. #Readingstandsunited.”
The attack came hours after a Black Lives Matter demonstration at Forbury Gardens, but police said there was no connection between the two events.
Personal trainer Lawrence Wort said the park was full of groups sitting on the grass Saturday evening when “one lone person walked through, suddenly shouted some unintelligible words and went around a large group of around 10, trying to stab them.”
“He stabbed three of them severely in the neck and under the arms, and then turned and started running towards me, and we turned and started running,” Wort said.
Britain has been hit by several terror attacks in recent years, both by people inspired by the Islamic State group and by far-right extremists. Islamist-inspired attacks include a suicide bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester that killed 22 people in 2017 and two deadly vehicle and knife attacks in London the same year.
In several cases, attackers have been known to police. In November, a man who had been released after serving a prison sentence for a terrorism offense stabbed two people to death at a justice conference in London.
In February, a man recently released from prison after serving time for terrorism-related offenses strapped on a fake bomb and stabbed two people on a busy London street before being shot to death by police. No one else was killed.
Britain’s official terrorism threat level stands at “substantial,” the middle level on a five-rung scale, meaning an attack is likely.
