Multiple blazes were burning out of control in California early Monday, prompting fresh evacuation orders for a state already battered by wildfires in recent months.

In Napa County, the Glass Fire rapidly scorched at least 2,500 acres and is zero percent contained, according to Cal Fire. It started early Sunday and by evening, had roared through vineyards and buildings; at least 2,000 structures are currently threatened by it, according to NBC Bay Area.

Meanwhile, two other fires were burning in the North Bay, the station reported: The Shady Fire started west of St. Helena and was burning into the Oakmont area of Santa Rosa, while the Boysen Fire was burning northeast of Santa Rosa. Those, too, forced evacuations, and are believed to be spot fires of the Glass Fire.

Among those shuttled to safety were residents of the Oakmont Village retirement community in Santa Rosa, city spokeswoman Elise Howard said.

About 100 residents who don’t drive or have nearby loved ones to pick them up were loaded on to five city buses between midnight and 1 a.m. PT and taken to evacuation center set up at a park 11 miles away, Howard added.

They are the latest in a string of blazes. Since the beginning of the year, there have been more than 8,100 wildfires that have burned more than 3.7 million acres in California, Cal Fire said Sunday, adding that since August 15, there have been 26 fatalities and more than 7,000 structures destroyed.

Among those destroyed by the Glass Fire Sunday was the Château Boswell Winery in St. Helena, a family-owned winery founded in 1979.

“Our incredibly talented team is safe, but shares our heartbreak,” Jacquelynn Prevost, ambassador at large of Château Boswell, told NBC News in a statement.

St. Helena hospital was evacuated out of an abundance of caution on Sunday, while the entire town of Paradise was put under an evacuation warning, meaning residents should prepare to evacuate.

It was not immediately clear how many people were under evacuation orders early Monday statewide.

KENOSHA, Wis. — Gunfire rang out from a crowd of protesters early Wednesday morning in Kenosha, Wis., on the third night of unrest over the police shooting of Jacob Blake Jr. At least three people were injured. It is unclear who fired the shots, and police and hospital officials have not yet confirmed the severity of the injuries.

Shots were first fired after midnight, as a group of protesters on Sheridan Road faced off with police in armored trucks. A young White man carrying an AR-15-style rifle began running north on Sheridan, away from the group. Video shows the armed man fall to the ground, and then fire multiple rounds into the crowd. Two more people fell to the ground, one shot in the arm. Another graphic video shows one man with blood running down the back of his neck and bystanders shouting that he’d been shot in the head.

Carol Badoni from Burlington, Wis. started CPR on one wounded man. His girlfriend said his name is Ben.

“He definitely was not breathing,” said Badoni, 50. “His eyes were rolled back in his head. There was no pulse.”

Badoni added, “I never run toward trouble but it’s worth getting shot for somebody else.”

Police soon arrived on the scene and took Ben to a nearby hospital.

Kenosha has been beset by violence, looting and fires since Sunday, when Blake, a 29-year-old Black man, was shot several times in the back by Kenosha police as he stepped into a car with his children inside. Earlier on Tuesday, Blake’s family said he is paralyzed and still in critical condition, while his mother pleaded for peaceful protests. But the family also chastised police, saying they systematically brutalize Black people.

“They shot my son seven times,” said Jacob Blake Sr., his father. “Seven times. Like he didn’t matter. But my son matters. He’s a human being, and he matters.”

After Monday night’s protests led to multiple buildings burning to the ground and dozens of stores being looted, police on Tuesday night made it harder for people to enter Kenosha. Seven consecutive exit ramps were closed from Interstate-94 from the Illinois border to Racine, Wis., which is about 20 minutes north of Kenosha. Off the highway, the city’s sprawling outlet mall, a destination for Chicago shoppers, and other retail corridors were boarded up.

In downtown Kenosha, however, the only law enforcement presence was once again around the Kenosha County Courthouse, where a fence was erected around the building. About 1,000 protesters gathered outside the barrier, and besides occasional chanting, the scene was quiet at first.

“A lot of fear in the air because of the threats to protesters,” said Nathan, 28, a Kenosha resident who did not want to give his last name.

Nathan said he didn’t think the national movement to bring greater police accountability will lead to real change. “I worry a lot about the misinformation,” he said. But locally, he said his city will never be the same.

“It’s hard to see now, but it will be a positive thing,” he said of the protests. “It’ll bring Kenosha back together. Kenosha has always been a resilient place. It’ll continue to happen.”

Some civilians brought firearms to Tuesday’s protest, from handguns to AR-15 rifles, along with knives and military flak jackets. Some, like Dennis, 22, from Racine, said he showed up with his pistol to protect himself and other protesters.

“Nothing is going to change,” he said, hanging back from the crowd. “This is all for nothing.”

Another man, brandishing a handgun, showed up after a call on Facebook to protect the city.

“Ain’t nothing being done. We’re the only ones,” said Joe, 29, a U.S. Marine veteran who asked not to give his last name. “This is nonsense,” he said, scanning the crowd, adding that others like him were around Kenosha tonight. “Three thousand of us are armed and ready,” he said.

After some protesters began vigorously shaking the fence and setting off fireworks aimed at officers on the other side, Kenosha County police officers atop the courthouse shot tear gas pellets and rubber bullets into the crowd.

When protesters retreated, others yelled at them to go back. Around 9:20 p.m., a military vehicle entered the park, dispersing tear gas. Protesters shot fireworks, both on the ground and into the courthouse steps.

By 10 p.m., after pushing protesters away from the fence, about 70 police officers in riot gear formed a line across the park outside the courthouse as clouds of tear gas continued toward the crowd. Most of the protesters moved to the outer streets of the park, but others remained, shielding themselves with trash cans as they flung rocks at the line of officers.

At least three police officers were shot while responding to a call at a home in Cedar Park, Texas, according to local authorities.

The department’s Twitter account initially said the officers had responded to a call at the home off Natalie Cove, about 25 miles north of Austin.

The suspect barricaded themselves inside the house following the shots, before multiple law enforcement agencies arrived on the scene.

HOUSTON POLICE LOOKING FOR 3 MEN CONNECTED TO DEADLY SHOOTING INVOLVING MOTORCYCLE GANG

“We are on scene of a shooting where multiple Cedar Park Police Officers have been shot while responding to a call at a home off Natalie Cove,” the message read. “Subject is barricaded inside the home and multiple law enforcement agencies are on scene.”

A local Fox 7 reporter claimed sources out on the street told her there were children inside of the house. She also said police had confirmed the wounds the three officers sustained. One was shot in the arm, another in the chest — but was protected by a Kevlar vest — and the third officer had a bullet graze their head.

Police later issued an update saying that three officers had been hit, but they are all currently receiving medical treatment and appear to be in stable condition.

The department added that the suspect has yet to be apprehended, making the area an “active” scene.

“At this time we can confirm three Cedar Park Police Officers have been shot,” the tweet stated. “They are at a local hospital in stable condition. This remains a very active scene, the subject is not in custody at this time.”

The city of Cedar Park also tweeted about the incident and warned its residents to stay inside their homes until the situation is resolved.

“Please avoid Bagdad Rd. between Osage and New Hope @CedarParkPD  and Cedar Park afire Dept. have closed southbound lane of Bagdad at Heritage,” the tweet stated.

Bill Gates on “serious mistakes” in COVID res…

28:30

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said Wednesday that people could need multiple doses of a potential coronavirus vaccine to immunize themselves from the coronavirus. If necessary, the multiple doses could require more than 7 billion vaccinations to be administered worldwide.

“None of the vaccines at this point appear like they’ll work with a single dose,” Gates said. “That was the hope at the very beginning.”

The billionaire philanthropist, who has donated $300 million towards the global effort to combat COVID-19 through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, told “CBS Evening News” anchor and managing editor Norah O’Donnell that deploying a coronavirus vaccine will require a global effort.

“If what you’re trying to do is block all the transmission, then you need to get 70-80% coverage on a global basis. So it’s unbelievably big numbers,” he said.

Gates, who has been warning about the threat of a global pandemic since 2015, admitted that “there will be a lot of uncertainty” about the efficacy of any vaccine, but stressed that it’s a solution “that will improve over time.”

The Moderna vaccine, which requires two doses a month apart, will start a crucial step around July 27: A 30,000-person study to prove if the shots really are strong enough to protect against the coronavirus.

When asked if the eventual vaccine will be safe, Gates said the FDA — as it stands — will be able to prevent an unsafe vaccine from going on the market.

“The FDA, not being pressured, will look hard at that,” Gates said of potential side effects. “The FDA is the gold standard of regulators, and their current guidance on this — if they stick with that — is very very appropriate.”

Bill Gates on the handling of the coronavirus…

03:22

The U.S. on Wednesday reported more than 1,000 coronavirus deaths for the first time since May. With 142,677 deaths in total, the U.S. has had the most deaths of any country by far, according to data gathered by Johns Hopkins University. President Trump, however, said this week that the U.S. has the lowest mortality rate in the world.

Gates said that the president’s statement is not factually correct. “Not at all, not even close,” Gates said. “By almost every measure, the U.S. is one of the worst.”

“We opened up with cases increasing,” Gates said. He also pointed to low mask compliance, a muzzling of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and a general lack of leadership as reasons why U.S. cases have not subsided.

“Serious mistakes were made,” he said.

Multiple people were injured during a Bible study session on Saturday afternoon when an alleged member of the congregation stabbed the church’s pastor before being stopped by the area’s police chief who happened to be in attendance.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at around 3 p.m. at the Grace Covenant Church in Chantilly, Virginia, about 25 miles west of Washington, D.C. when a member of the church stabbed the church’s pastor who was leading a Bible study class at the time.

Two church members reportedly came to the defense of the pastor, including Fairfax County Police Chief Ed Roessler who happened to be at Grace Covenant at the right time.

A witness of the stabbing spoke to ABC News’ Washington, D.C. affiliate WJLA and described the chaotic scene.

“He did his part in the moment,” the female witness said. “Sometimes we can’t prevent injury. I know people were injured but it could have been worse, I do believe. I think it could have been a lot worse. There are a lot of emotions but I do have faith that everything is going to be okay.”

According to WJLA, Ed Roessler is a 31-year law enforcement veteran who has been in a leadership position with Fairfax County Police since 2010 and also worked at the most recent presidential inauguration in 2017.

Brett Fuller, another pastor at the Grace Covenant Church and chaplain to Washington, D.C.’s NFL franchise, released a statement following the stabbing.

“Today, in a routine church educational setting, one of our pastors was assaulted by an attendee,” Fuller said. “Two church members came to the pastor’s aid and valiantly risked their own lives to defend him. In the process, one of our members was injured. The pastor and one of the members are being treated at Reston Hospital for non life-threatening injuries. The other member involved sustained injuries that did not require medical attention. The assailant was taken into captivity at the scene.”

Said Fuller: “We are in prayer for all the injured. We are grateful for the courage exhibited that prevented worse from happening. Lastly, we want to thank the broader community for their outpouring of concern and support in this time.”

Two people were treated for non-serious non-life-threatening injuries at nearby Reston Hospital and the unnamed suspect was taken into custody.

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – There were over 150 new cases of COVID reported in Lucas County over the weekend with 500 new cases since July 1st.

Toledo Lucas County Health Commissioner Eric Zgodzinski says some of those cases have been caused by people disregarding safety measures.

“Over the last two weeks, we’ve had some issues with individuals who knew they were sick or who were exposed to a family member going out and not adhering to quarantine guidelines.”

It’s actions like this, Zgodzinski says there are inexcusably driving our COVID cases up. “I want to make sure that people understand that when we call and we say you need to be quarantined, you need to be isolated that you stay there and do what’s asked of you for those 14 days.”

The decision to move Lucas County into the red warning zone is based on cases per-capita. Zgodzinski says we’re close to that. “I will say that we’re trending in the number of cases. Thank goodness that we’re not seeing any real fatalities. If I were just guessing, we’re probably going to approach red at some point in time over the next two weeks.”

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Several restaurants and bars in West Michigan are closing back down, this time because of staff members testing positive for Coronavirus.

So far, FOX 17 has confirmed that Long Road Distillery in Grand Haven, Bostwick Lake Inn near Rockford, and Donkey Taqueria in Grand Rapids are all shutting their doors temporarily. Each had at least one employee test positive for Coronavirus, but where they were exposed is still under investigation.

The cases are not surprising to the Kent County Health Department.

“It’s understandable, people want to get together and hang out and they’re going to go where they can and do that. So we just still want people to be taking precautions,” said Brian Hartl, Epidemiologist with the Kent County Health Department.

The real concern for the department is the rising number of daily cases. On Tuesday Kent County saw 24 new cases. Wednesday that went up to 37. Thursday it was 52.

Officials with John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, said multiple employees who work at the campus Village Care Center have tested positive for COVID-19.A release from John Knox says five new employees at the facility’s care center have tested positive for coronavirus, bringing the facility’s total number of positive cases to nine. Facility officials said all employees have been asymptomatic while they were on campus and passed daily pre-shift screenings. Officials said none of the 200 residents at the Village Care Center have tested positive for the virus. “Between March 16 and June 10, four associates have tested positive for COVID-19 – one in March, one in May and two in early June,” the facility said. Because of the most recent cases, the care center decided Thursday, June 11 to be proactive in testing everyone in the building. Those tests resulted in the five additional cases. None of the employees have worked at the center since their positive tests. “Because of the sporadic scattering of the associates who have tested positive, we do not believe it is being spread within the building; rather it appears to show that our infection control procedures are doing their job,” said Anthony Columbatto, Village Care Center administrator. “However, these outcomes have led us to also begin administering tests to our residents.”“Given the size of the Village Care Center, we have always anticipated, and planned, for the fact that an infection could happen here at any time,” Columbatto said. “We are confident in our procedures, and we are prepared if a resident tests positively.”John Knox officials said one of the care center employees who tested positive also works inside the John Knox Village Assisted Living Center. That employee tested negative with a routine test two weeks ago, but tested positive in the most recent round of testing. As a result, the assisted living facility residents will also be tested. “We have been testing residents throughout the last 100 or so days whenever we felt that they could be exhibiting symptoms. So far, we have tested 40 individuals and all the tests came back negative,” said Rodney McBride, vice president of health and community services. “Yesterday, we started collecting samples from all the Village Care Center residents and will most likely have the results toward the end of the week. We also are starting to collect samples from the Village Assisted Living residents who came in contact with the non-JKV health care worker who tested positive.”

John Knox officials said one of the care center employees who tested positive also works inside the John Knox Village Assisted Living Center.

(Reuters) – The following is a brief roundup of some of the latest scientific studies on the novel coronavirus and efforts to find treatments and vaccines for COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus.

Coronavirus has more than one gateway into cells

Two teams of European researchers, working independently, have identified a new entryway through which the coronavirus gets into cells and infects them, suggesting another approach to stopping it. One key route – via a protein on cell surfaces called ACE2 – is well known. The newly identified gateway is a cell-surface protein called neuropilin-1, or NRP1. A “spike” on the surface of the coronavirus binds to NRP1, allowing the virus to break into the cell, similar to how a virus spike attaches itself to ACE2. Other viruses also employ NRP1 as an entry into cells, including the one that causes mononucleosis. In laboratory experiments with human cells, one of the teams found that an antibody that binds to NRP1 can block the coronavirus spike from attaching and prevent infection. Neither of the studies has been through the peer-review process. One was posted on the preprint server bioRxiv on Wednesday and the other late last week. The research groups say their findings suggest that NRP1 could be another target for drugs and vaccines against the new virus. (https://bit.ly/2C1nKk4; https://bit.ly/2UE2pDJ)

Mouse study suggests Moderna vaccine will be safe in humans

A study of Moderna Inc’s COVID-19 vaccine in mice lends some assurance that it will not increase the risk of more severe disease in humans, and that one dose may provide protection against the novel coronavirus, according to preliminary data released on Friday. Prior studies testing vaccines in similar viruses have suggested that rather than being protective, they might accidentally cause more severe disease, especially in individuals who do not produce an adequately strong immune response. Scientists see this risk as a key hurdle that must be cleared before vaccines can be safely tested in thousands of healthy people. While the data released by the U.S. National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Disease and Moderna were encouraging, mouse data is no guarantee of what will happen in humans. Further testing also suggested that the vaccine induces potent neutralizing antibody responses – the type of response needed to block the virus from infecting cells – and that it appeared to protect against infection in the lungs and nose without evidence of toxic effects. The study, which has not yet been peer reviewed, was posted on the bioRxiv website. Moderna said on Thursday it plans to begin final-stage trials enrolling 30,000 people in July. Hydroxychloroquine affect on immune system not helpful against virus

Researchers studying how hydroxychloroquine modifies the body’s immune response have found it is unlikely to be helpful in fighting the coronavirus, in the latest evidence against use of the decades-old malaria drug promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump. The medicine, which is also used treat inflammatory conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, was shown to prevent the new coronavirus from replicating in test tube experiments. While it does reduce severe inflammation, the researchers say, it simultaneously suppresses the immune responses needed to fight off the virus and does not allow the body to develop so-called trained immunity, which facilities the defense against infections. “The fact that hydroxychloroquine averts trained immunity argues against the usefulness of this drug in clearing SARS-CoV-2 infection,” the researchers wrote in a not-yet-peer-reviewed paper posted on Tuesday on the preprint server medRxiv. COVID-19 is a neurological disease too

Add problems with the brain and nervous system to the list of complications in patients with COVID-19, say doctors, providing further evidence that it is far more than a respiratory illness. For a report on Thursday in the Journal of Neurology, researchers pooled data from 41 previously published studies of the neurological effects of the coronavirus. The most common nonspecific neurological symptoms were fatigue (seen in 33.2% of patients), loss of appetite (30.0%), shortness of breath (26.9%), and general malaise (26.7%). The most common specific neurological symptoms – which occurred less often – included disorders of smell and taste, Guillain-Barré syndrome and inflammation of the brain, spinal cord, and meninges. These tallies did not include strokes that result from blood clotting disorders caused by the coronavirus. In a report published on Sunday in Annals of Neurology, a separate team of doctors called COVID-19 “a global threat to the nervous system” and said, “the number of recognized neurologic manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 infection is rapidly accumulating.” (https://bit.ly/2YnRuz6; https://bit.ly/3hgFCYp)

Mask-wearing significantly reduces infection risk

Of all the lifestyle changes imposed to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, mask-wearing may be the most important, a new study suggests. Researchers say infection trends shifted dramatically when mask-wearing rules were implemented on April 6 in northern Italy and April 17 in New York City – two epicenters of the pandemic. “This protective measure alone significantly reduced the number of infections, that is, by over 78,000 in Italy from April 6 to May 9 and over 66,000 in New York City from April 17 to May 9,” they calculated in a study published on Thursday in PNAS: The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA. When mask-wearing went into effect in New York, the daily new infection rate fell by about 3% per day, researchers said. In the rest of the country, daily new infections continued to increase. Direct contact precautions – social distancing, quarantine and isolation, and hand sanitizing – were all in place before mask-wearing rules went into effect in Italy and New York City. But they only help minimize virus transmission by direct contact, while face covering helps prevent airborne transmission, the researchers say. “The unique function of face covering to block atomization and inhalation of virus-bearing aerosols accounts for the significantly reduced infections,” they said. That would indicate “that airborne transmission of COVID-19 represents the dominant route for infection,” they conclude. (https://bit.ly/3fvbabp)
