The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have launched legal action in the US after drones were allegedly used to take pictures of their infant son Archie.
A complaint filed in Los Angeles, California, on Thursday claims an unnamed individual photographed 14-month-old Archie at the Sussexes’ home during the coronavirus lockdown.
The royal couple have claimed the pictures were an invasion of privacy.
The lawsuit highlights privacy laws in California.
Prince Harry and Meghan are now based in Los Angeles, having stepped back as senior royals at the end of March.
The couple’s lawyer, Michael Kump, said: “Every individual and family member in California is guaranteed by law the right to privacy in their home. No drones, helicopters or telephoto lenses can take away that right.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are filing this lawsuit to protect their young son’s right to privacy in their home without intrusion by photographers, and to uncover and stop those who seek to profit from these illegal actions.”
According to the lawsuit, the duke and duchess are constantly followed by paparazzi, who have tracked them down to their home in Los Angeles, flying helicopters overhead and cutting holes in their security fences.
It marks the latest example of the Sussexes actions against what they have previously described as “invasive” tabloid media.

In a separate legal action, against the publisher of the Mail on Sunday and Mail Online, Meghan is suing for breach of privacy and copyright infringement.
Earlier this month, court documents claimed the duchess felt “unprotected by the Institution” of the monarchy and was “prohibited from defending herself” against media reports while pregnant.
The publisher denies her claims.

]]>Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex newly ensconced in a Beverly Hills gated community, have struck out against Los Angeles’ paparazzi with a lawsuit over harassment at home.
The complaint filed Thursday in L.A. County Superior Court alleges unnamed individuals photographed their 14-month-old son Archie in their backyard as they bunkered down during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The invasion of privacy lawsuit leans on California’s law to rein in paparazzi, which made photographing or filming anyone in their homes by use of drone or telephoto lens illegal. Because the couple doesn’t know who took the shots, the suit targets unnamed defendants as a way to allow them to pursue, through subpoenas, anyone peddling the photos.
“Every individual and family member in California is guaranteed by law the right to privacy in their home,” said Michael J. Kump, the couple’s attorney and partner at Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump & Aldisert LLP. “No drones, helicopters or telephoto lenses can take away that right. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are filing this lawsuit to protect their young son’s right to privacy in their home without intrusion by photographers, and to uncover and stop those who seek to profit from these illegal actions.”
The suit describes a life besieged by drones and photographers tracking the pair from country to country and now trained on their new home, with helicopters flying overhead and photographers cutting holes in their security fences.
The royal couple said in their complaint they are not looking for any special treatment, and expect they will be trailed by media when out in public, but draw the line on incursions into their home life.
The suit, while unconnected to any other litigation, comes as Meghan Markle is suing a U.K. newspaper for publishing a letter she wrote to her father.
“The family has tried to ignore these physical and constructive trespasses as best they can. … But the plaintiffs recently learned that certain paparazzi and their enablers have crossed a red line for any parent,” Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, said in their suit. “The plaintiffs will not allow the tabloids to break the law, especially when it involves intimidation, harassment and the addition of a very real security threat on top of what already exists.”
The couple’s every move has been scrutinized since their highly public departure from British royal life as senior members of the family.
Harry and Meghan have dropped previous plans for a foundation called Sussex Royal and instead are already working on initiatives for a new charitable venture they have named Archewell.
They have been photographed out and about in L.A., delivering food for the needy earlier this year and working more recently to help promote the L.A. nonprofit Homeboy Industries.

Mulroney was hit with backlash and axed from television gigs this week after her feud with lifestyle blogger Sasha Exeter was made public. Exeter showed screenshots of Mulroney allegedly threatening to sue her, in addition to referencing her friendship with Markle.
Markle, 38, has been telling friends that Mulroney’s now-viral scandal has left her embarrassed, according to the Daily Mail.

“Meghan is absolutely mortified that she’s been dragged into this complete mess,” a friend of Meghan’s told the outlet. “She said Jessica is in no way a racist, but the way she handled the situation (with the fashion influencer) was tone-deaf and heartbreaking.”
Prince Harry‘s wife is now questioning how she can keep Mulroney in her inner circle. Mulroney has previously been known as one of the Duchess of Sussex’s closest friends and was reportedly an unofficial wedding planner for Markle’s 2018 royal wedding to Prince Harry.
“Meghan said friends reflect friends and because of what’s at stake she can no longer be associated with Jessica, at least not in public,” the source said. “She has to do what she has to do in order to preserve her dignity and her own reputation.”

Mulroney’s missteps were first made public on Wednesday when Exeter shared a video on Instagram that she titled “MY ‘AMY COOPER’ EXPERIENCE” — a reference to the white woman who called the police on a black birdwatcher in Central Park last month.
In the nearly-12-minute video, Exeter revealed that she had shared a “generic” call to action on her Instagram story in light of recent events, claiming that Mulroney “took offense” to the message.
“What happened next was a series of very problematic behavior and antics that ultimately resulted in [Mulroney] sending me a threat in writing last Wednesday,” said the blogger.
It’s unclear what exactly Mulroney said to Exeter.

Exeter stressed that she wasn’t calling Mulroney a racist, but said that “she is very well aware of her wealth, her perceived power and privilege because of the color of her skin.”
“And that, my friends, gave her the momentary confidence to come for my livelihood in writing,” said Exeter, calling the incident a display of “textbook white privilege.”
“For her to threaten me ― a single mom, a single black mom — during a racial pandemic blows my mind,” the blogger continued. “The goal here is genuine, transformative change ― not optical and performative bulls–t. You cannot be posting that you stand in solidarity while attempting to silence somebody via text.”
Mulroney issued an apology in the comments of the video.
“You are right when you say ‘this s–t needs to stop,'” wrote Mulroney, per People. “As leaders, we need to join hands and call out wrongs. I know we have different experiences. And that is something that, even in the course of a heated argument, I need to acknowledge and understand. I am unequivocally sorry for not doing that with you, and for any hurt I caused.”

Mulroney then referenced her relationship with Markle, 38, calling their relationship and the Duchess of Sussex’s time in the spotlight “deeply educational.”
“I learned a lot from that,” admitted Mulroney. “I promise to continue to learn and listen on how I can use my privilege to elevate and support black voices.”
After the public apology, Exeter shared a screenshot of a direct message that she received from Mulroney, which contained the threat of a lawsuit.
“Liable [sic] suit. Good luck,” Mulroney wrote.
Then on Thursday, Mulroney shared a statement of her own on the matter.

“As some of you may have seen, @SashaExeter and I had a disagreement,” she wrote on Instagram. “She rightfully called me out for not doing enough when it came to engaging in the important and difficult conversation around race and injustice in our society. I took it personally and that was wrong. I know I need to do better. Those of us with a platform must use it to speak out.”
As a result of the controversy, Mulroney’s “I Do, Redo” was pulled from CTV and “Good Morning America” confirmed she would no longer appear as one of its fashion contributors.

]]>“The View” co-host Meghan McCain warned on Tuesday that Democrats were hurting their party’s electoral prospects by countenancing the idea that local governments should “defund the police” after George Floyd’s death.
“If you’re explaining, you’re losing and there’s a lot of explaining going on on this,” McCain said. “… If you mean reform, say ‘reform.’ If you mean defund, say ‘defund.’ People are confused.”
McCain noted that Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., had called for the dismantling of the Minneapolis police department, which employed the officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than 8 minutes on May 25. Floyd died soon after and the former officer, Kenneth Chauvin, faces murder charges.
“Listen, you guys can spin and say everything you want,” she told her fellow “View” co-hosts. “I know that politics at the end of the day, unfortunately, is real simple and it is about slogans. And ‘defund the police’ is a great one for the Trump campaign.“
TOP DEMS PUNT ON ‘DEFUND THE POLICE’ QUESTION
Earlier, co-host Sunny Hostin had pushed back on the idea that “defund the police” could be relegated to a “slogan.”
“The biggest misunderstanding is that people think that defunding the police means abolishing the police and that’s not true,” she said. “There are three different reactions to what you can do in terms of combatting police brutality, especially police brutality in black and brown communities … You can either reform the police departments, you can either defund the police departments, or you can disband the police departments.”
Hostin added that when reforms like implicit bias training don’t seem to work, the next step would be to transfer money from the police departments to social services.

“The last and most rarest form of combatting police brutality is disbanding police departments,” she said. “It is rarely done. It was done in, I think about seven years ago, in Camden, New Jersey. What happened there is, it’s disbanded.
“Officers are then basically — they re-apply for their positions. People in the community re-apply for their positions and police safety — public safety –they’re retrained, but it looks very different,” she continued. “It’s reimagined. Again, it’s so rare that it’s only been done a handful of times really, and it hasn’t really been done in big metropolitan cities.
“But it’s an option that people are now considering. This discussion, by the way, was going on when I was a community prosecutor in the late ’90s. [Former New York City Police Commissioner and LAPD Chief] Bill Bratton said yesterday it’s been going on for about 50 years or more. So, this is not a new discussion and I’m surprised people are relegating it to a slogan because that’s not what this is about. This is about saving lives.”

“The View” co-host Meghan McCain argued the Trump campaign turned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s appearance on late-night television into an effective ad that dubbed her “Nancy Antoinette.”
“I thought this ad was a kill shot,” McCain said on Tuesday.
The ad juxtaposed Pelosi showing her freezer full of ice cream with news that Americans were waiting for “hours” at food banks. It also highlighted how Democrats rejected a coronavirus relief package.

At one point, a man says “right now, it’s survival mode.” In the following clip, Pelosi says: “I don’t know what I would have done if ice cream were not invented.” It ends with a spoof quote, playing off of one attributed to former French Queen Marie Antoinette. “Let them eat ice cream,” the quote reads, before citing “Nancy Antoinette.”
On Tuesday, McCain added: “It’s not the ice cream that’s in her fridge. It’s the fact that she’s standing behind giant refrigerators, multiple ones that cost $24,000 each.”
She also responded to “View” co-host Joy Behar, who had suggested Republicans should look at President Trump’s refrigerator given how wealthy he was.
“You’re right, Joy, politicians are wealthy, Trump is wealthy, but I think in this specific moment, optics are narratives. I don’t make the rules of politics. This is just how it works,” McCain said.

McCain also noted how the ad showed Pelosi “joking” about rejecting the stimulus package. She was referring to a portion where Pelosi said, smiling: “They were asking for a quarter of a trillion dollars within 48 hours and I said, ‘Well, I don’t think so.'”
“Trust me when I say this, it will play very well in the middle of the country,” McCain said.
She also pointed to how Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., seemed to celebrate the depreciation of oil amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“She’s a very smart woman,” McCain said of Ocasio-Cortez. “She has an economics degree from Boston College. She understands if oil prices are lower, it is not going to make the American public more inclined to support the Green New Deal. It’s going to make people want to buy cheaper oil prices.
“So I don’t really understand what this narrative is, but Democrats need to be very, very careful and I said this yesterday, on how they are treating and talking about people who are jobless and unemployed and going hungry in this country right now and you have the two arguably most famous Democratic women in the country, I think, botching a major, major conversation right now.”
