]]>More than 100 workers at the Farmer John plant in Vernon have contracted the coronavirus in an outbreak plaguing the facility that produces the Dodger Dog.
Thus far, 116 workers at the Smithfield-owned meat-processing plant have tested positive, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Smithfield, which bought Farmer John in 2017, could not be reached Saturday for comment.
According to the company’s website, “every employee involved in handling, preparing and processing food wears personal protective equipment covering their heads, faces (including masks and face shields), hands and bodies. Additionally, employees undergo temperature checks and are screened for COVID-19 symptoms.”
“During this pandemic, our entire industry is faced with an impossible choice: continue to operate to sustain our nation’s food supply or shutter in an attempt to entirely insulate our employees from risk,” the company said in a statement issued in early May. “It’s an awful choice; it’s not one we wish on anyone. It is impossible to keep protein on tables across America if our nation’s meat plants are not running.”
The outbreak at Smithfield’s Vernon plant is the largest listed by the county’s public health department at a nonresidential setting.

]]>WASHINGTON — The manufacturer of Lysol, a disinfectant spray and cleaning product, and the EPA both issued statements warning against any internal use after President Donald Trump suggested that people could get an “injection” of “the disinfectant that knocks (coronavirus) out in a minute.”
“As a global leader in health and hygiene products, we must be clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body (through injection, ingestion or any other route),” said a spokesperson for Reckitt Benckiser, the United Kingdom-based owner of Lysol, in a statement to NBC News.
“As with all products, our disinfectant and hygiene products should only be used as intended and in line with usage guidelines. Please read the label and safety information,” the statement continued, adding that the company believes it has a “responsibility in providing consumers with access to accurate, up-to-date information as advised by leading public health experts.”
The Environmental Protection Agency also is reminding people to only use disinfectant on surfaces.

The EPA said, “Never apply the product to yourself or others. Do not ingest disinfectant products.”
William Bryan of the Department of Homeland Security said at a White House briefing on Thursday that “emerging results” from new research suggest solar light has a powerful effect in killing the virus on surfaces and in the air.
But he said there was no consideration of internal use of disinfectants.
At the briefing, Trump also suggested that people could be treated with “ultraviolet or just a very powerful light” to kill the virus after Bryan’s presentation showed that the virus might not live as long in warmer and more humid temperatures.
Trump then also mentioned an “injection” of “disinfectant” to deter the virus.
“I see the disinfectant that knocks it out in a minute, one minute,” the president said. “And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning? As you see, it gets in the lungs, it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that.”
Trump did not specify the kind of disinfectant.
Medical professionals were quick to dispute Trump’s claims as “irresponsible” and “dangerous.”
“This notion of injecting or ingesting any type of cleansing product into the body is irresponsible and it’s dangerous,” said Dr. Vin Gupta, a pulmonologist, global health policy expert and an NBC News and MSNBC contributor.
“It’s a common method that people utilize when they want to kill themselves,” Gupta added.

PLAINSBORO CENTER, N.J. (TEGNA) — One insulin maker is offering diabetic patients free insulin for 90 days if they no longer have health insurance coverage because they lost their jobs during the COVID-19 economic crisis.
Pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk announced April 14 that the offer is available through its diabetes patient assistance program.
“The pandemic is taking a serious toll on the nation’s health and economy. Millions of people are losing jobs and health coverage, and that’s especially tragic if you have a chronic disease like diabetes,” said Doug Langa, Executive Vice President, North America Operations and President of Novo Nordisk Inc.
To participate, individuals must provide documentation that they lost their health care benefits or that they are being offered Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) benefits. In a news release, the company said if someone’s paperwork isn’t immediately available they can take advantage of the company’s immediate supply.
Novo Nordisk’s offer is only for 90 days, but the company said if someone’s Medicaid benefits are denied, they can extend through the end of the year.
However, anyone applying for this program must have a valid prescription for Novo Nordisk insulin and meet certain eligibility criteria.
“Patients have enough issues to worry about at this moment. We don’t want being able to pay for their insulin to be one of them,” said Langa.
Novo Nordisk is just the most recent manufacturer to help patients during the coronavirus pandemic. At the beginning of April, Eli Lilly announced it was capping the out-of-pocket cost for insulin at $35 during the COVID-19 crisis.
