Wildfire-battling Napa County is no longer listed on the state’s COVID-19 monitoring list, making it the first of the nine Bay Area counties to come off the list since all were added during the month of July.

The county was removed from the state’s county-by-county chart on the watch list Thursday, but still appeared on the watch list’s main page with detailed explanations for why each county is on the list. As of Friday morning, Napa County has been removed from both, seemingly confirming that the county is no longer subject to state-mandated indoor business closures, and local schools can reopen schools for in-person education 14 days from now.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom previously stated that San Francisco County was “likely” to come off the watch list this week, but the county reactivated the watch list’s case-per-capita and ICU bed capacity indicators Thursday. The soonest SF can come off the list is now Tuesday of next week after the two indicators were marked again Friday.

The other seven Bay Area counties all have various indicators marked, and none are particularly close to being under the 100-case-per-100,000-resident threshold required to satisfy the case criteria.

On Saturday, the president responded on Twitter to criticism from Florida Republican Matt Gaetz about the new anthem policy. “I won’t be watching much anymore!” wrote Trump.

On Wednesday, US Soccer repealed a rule that requires all players to stand during the anthem. The policy was originally put in place after USWNT star Megan Rapinoe knelt during the anthem in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick. US Soccer’s decision came in the wake of protests across the United States against police brutality and racism.

“We have not done enough to listen – especially to our players – to understand and acknowledge the very real and meaningful experiences of Black and other minority communities in our country. We apologize to our players – especially our Black players – staff, fans, and all who support eradicating racism,” US Soccer said in a statement on Wednesday. “Sports are a powerful platform for good, and we have not used our platform as effectively as we should have. We can do more on these specific issues and we will.”

Trump’s statement came after he criticised the NFL for issuing an apology for not listening to its players’ concerns over racism in the United States. In the statement, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league would now “encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest”.

Rapinoe took a knee during the anthem at a pair of national team matches in 2016. She said she wanted to express solidarity with Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who silently took a knee during the national anthem before NFL games to raise awareness of police brutality and racial injustice.

BOSTON — Whether it’s planting trees or serving food to the homeless, volunteering your time for the greater good makes a difference in the lives of many. As it turns out, doing good deeds also benefits your body, too. A new study out of Harvard shows that people who regularly volunteer enjoy longer, happier, healthier lives.

Of course, the psychological benefits of altruism are nothing new. Various studies have made claims about the health benefits of volunteering; but none have quite the strength of this latest research that includes almost 13,000 participants.

Researchers say that people over 50 years old who volunteer for about two hours weekly have a considerably lower risk of death. They’re also less likely to develop physical impairments and exercise more frequently. All of these benefits naturally lead to a stronger overall well-being versus people who do not volunteer.

“Humans are social creatures by nature. Perhaps this is why our minds and bodies are rewarded when we give to others,” explains lead author Dr. Eric Kim, of the Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University, in a release. “Our results show that volunteerism among older adults doesn’t just strengthen communities, but enriches our own lives by strengthening our bonds to others, helping us feel a sense of purpose and well-being, and protecting us from feelings of loneliness, depression, and hopelessness. Regular altruistic activity reduces our risk of death even though our study didn’t show any direct impact on a wide array of chronic conditions.”

When You Give, You Also Receive

The researchers randomly selected nearly 13,000 participants a national study conducted between 2010-2016. Participants were split into two groups and tracked for four years each. The research team used health data, face-to-face interviews and surveys to evaluate the effects of volunteering on 34 specific physical and mental health outcomes.

Interestingly, the analyses reveal that volunteering does not seem to be linked to improvements in numerous chronic health conditions. In particular, the authors noted no change for sufferers of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, hypertension, cancer, lung disease, cognitive impairment, arthritis, chronic pain or obesity.

Further research is needed to elucidate some of the findings of this study and to clarify why some results of this study differ from those of previous research. For the time being, researchers feel comfortable encouraging older adults to spend more time volunteering.

You Can Still Volunteer Safely During COVID-19 Outbreak

The authors say the coronavirus lockdown could be the perfect time to start getting involved with your community, as long as you follow social distancing guidelines, of course. “Now might be a particular moment in history when society needs your service the most,” says Dr. Kim. “If you are able to do so while abiding by health guidelines, you not only can help to heal and repair the world, but you can help yourself as well.”

“When the COVID-19 crisis finally subsides,” he concludes, “we have a chance to create policies and civic structures that enable more giving in society. Some cities were already pioneering this idea before the pandemic and quarantine, and I hope we have the willingness and resolve to do so in a post-COVID-19 society as well.”

The study is published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Video-calling service Zoom said Thursday it will not comply with requests from the Chinese government to suspend hosts or block people from meetings if those people are not located in mainland China.

It’s Zoom’s latest reaction to pressure amid a surge of popularity this year as the coronavirus sent people home from school and work. First, Zoom faced concerns about security and privacy as issues like lewd interruptions to meetings and security vulnerabilities became apparent, and the company took steps to address them.

Earlier this month, U.S.-based civil-rights group Humanitarian China, founded by protest participant Zhou Fengsuo, said that the organization’s Zoom account was shut down following an event commemorating the 1989 protests in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, which the Chinese government forbids citizens from observing. On Wednesday, Zoom acknowledged it had shut down the account, then later reinstated it.

The company explained in a blog post Thursday that its action “fell short,” and offered more details about what happened.

In May and early June, the Chinese government alerted the company to four Tiananmen Square-related meetings and told Zoom to shut down the meetings and the accounts hosting them. The company saw that some of the meetings had attendees in mainland China, so it ended three of the four meetings and suspended or shut down the accounts that had hosted them.

But not all of the attendees or hosts were located on the Chinese mainland. So Zoom reinstated the accounts for two hosts based in the U.S. and one in the Hong Kong special administrative region. It also admitted it was wrong to end the meetings entirely, even for users who were not in mainland China, but that it currently lacks technology to block individual users based on geography.

Zoom is now building technology that can remove or block people based on country, which could help the company meet government requests without overreaching.

“We are improving our global policy to respond to these types of requests. We will outline this policy as part of our transparency report, to be published by June 30, 2020,” the company said.

Zoom itself is based in the Silicon Valley city of San Jose, California, and CEO Eric Yuan is a U.S. citizen.

Last week Yuan said that the company wants to work the FBI if people use Zoom with malicious intent and that Zoom wouldn’t want to provide end-to-end encryption to people who use the service without paying for it.

Zoom shares are up 226% so far this year as usage swelled alongside competing services like Cisco’s Webex, which Yuan once worked on. Zoom’s revenue grew 169% on an annualized basis in the quarter that ended on April 30.

President Donald Trump said he had “just finished” taking a two-week course of the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, the medication he has vigorously promoted as a preventative or curative treatment for the coronavirus, even as evidence piles up that the drug may cause more harm than good.

“Finished, just finished,” he said in an interview that aired on Sinclair Broadcasting on Sunday. “And by the way, I’m still here.”

The president again defended his decision to take, and talk about, the unproven treatment in the interview, amid Food and Drug Administration warnings against using the drug for COVID-19 outside of hospital settings because of a risk of serious heart problems.

Hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial drug that is often used to treat lupus and rheumatoid disease. There are no approved treatments for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

“Well, I’ve heard tremendous reports about it. Frankly, I’ve heard tremendous reports. Many people think it saved their lives. Doctors come out with reports. You had a study in France, you had a study in Italy that were incredible studies,” Trump said, failing to acknowledge the studies that tied the drug to a greater risk of death or those that found no benefit at all.

Trump suggested that he’d taken it because two White House workers had tested positive for the virus.

“I believe in it enough that I took a program because I had two people in the White House that tested positive,” he said. “I figured maybe it’s a good thing to take a program.”

There have been several studies into the effect of hydroxychloroquine on patients sick with COVID-19 that have found the drug to be ineffective or harmful to patients fighting the coronavirus.

A study out of China found that patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who were given hydroxychloroquine and standard care for COVID-19 fared worse than those given standard care, while French researchers in another study found that treatment with hydroxychloroquine didn’t stop the progression of the disease. A study in New York that was funded by the National Institutes of Health found no adverse or beneficial effects of the administration of hydroxychloroquine on coronavirus patients. Another study in Brazil was stopped early after patients developed fatal, irregular heartbeats.

The World Health Organization announced on Monday that it was suspending a trial of hydroxychloroquine in treating COVID-19 due to potential risks.

The president told reporters last week that he was taking the unproven treatment after consulting with the White House physician. He also claimed without evidence that thousands of essential workers, including doctors and nurses, were taking the drug to prevent contracting the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Pressed then on why he was using an unproven therapeutic, Trump said: “Because I think it’s good. I’ve heard a lot of good stories.”

President Trump said that he is no longer on hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malarial drug he has been taking for several weeks as a treatment to ward off the coronavirus.

“Finished, just finished,” Trump told “Full Measure with Sharyl Attkisson” during an interview that aired Sunday on Sinclair Broadcasting. “And by the way, I’m still here. To the best of my knowledge, here I am.”

The president said he’d received letters and calls from doctors extolling the drug’s benefits and that the White House physician consented to him taking it.

“I’ve heard a lot of good stories. And if it is not good, I will tell you, right. I’m not going to get hurt by it. It has been around for 40 years for malaria, for lupus, for other things,” Trump had said.

The Food and Drug Administration, however, has warned about using the drug for coronavirus treatment outside of hospitals or clinical trials due to the risk of heart problems.

Dr. Phil McGraw, psychologist, author and host of “Dr. Phil,” appeared on “The Ingraham Angle” Thursday to go over how the American individuals are handling tension and anxiety throughout the continuous lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

” This is undetectable. I can’t show you an X-ray of depression, I can’t reveal you an X-ray of stress and anxiety, however the fact of the matter is, the longer this lockdown goes on, the more susceptible people get,” the television personality said.

” And it resembles there’s a tipping point. There’s a point at which people start having enough problems in lockdown that it will in fact create more damage and in fact more deaths throughout time than the actual infection will itself.”

THE CORONAVIRUS BREAK OUT, STATE BY STATE

McGraw cautioned that lives will be damaged, not just from the infection however from life’s modifications that have come as a repercussion.

” The fallout is going to last for several years due to the fact that people’s lives are being destroyed,” he stated.

The television host alerted of the negative effects, physically, of isolation, as the country invests day after day in their homes.

” It’s a best storm since here you’ve got individuals that are in isolation that develops problems. Solitude in fact develops problems. Individuals that struggle with solitude,” McGraw said.

” They end up being 29 percent more likely to have coronary artery disease, 32 percent most likely to have strokes or die, 40 percent more likely to have dementia if they’re in that age group. It’s not simply that. It’s psychological. Their bodies really start breaking down.”

McGraw warned more lives may be ruined as an outcome of the lockdown.

” So we believe we’re protecting individuals’s lives by keeping them locked up. You keep it locked up enough time, there’s a paradoxical result,” McGraw said. “You in fact destroy more lives than you do by letting them head out and safeguard themselves and up into their lives to fight for what they believe in.”
