EXCLUSIVE: House Republicans on Friday demanded that Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser “immediately suspend” the “radical” proposal from a city organization to rename, relocate or potentially remove monuments in the nation’s capital.

The District of Columbia Facilities and Commemorative Expressions (DCFACES) Working Group, created by Bowser, issued a report last month recommending that the D.C. government make changes to D.C.’s historic monuments and memorials to “reflect contemporary DC values.”

In a letter to Bowser on Friday, first obtained by Fox News, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and the top Republican on the House Oversight Committee, Rep. James Comer. R-Ky., said they were “shocked and appalled that Washington, D.C. — the seat of government for our great nation and named for our first president — would seek to erase the legacy of our nation’s founders and trivialize their contributions to the American experiment.”

“You must immediately suspend this dangerous attempt at revising American history and desecrating the memory of our nation’s presidents, war heroes, and visionaries,” Jordan and Comer wrote.

TRUMP SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER TO PROTECT AMERICAN MONUMENTS, STATUES AND MEMORIALS

The two GOP lawmakers called the recommendations from the city panel “radical.”

“The Working Group wants the Federal government to ‘remove, relocate, or contextualize’ eight different monuments and memorials located on federal property,” they wrote. “This absurd recommendation targets monuments and memorials for President George Washington, President Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and other American heroes.”

They added: “These monuments are in place to represent American values and heritage—not simply to reflect your notion of ‘contemporary DC values.’

“Recommending their removal, relocation, or contextualization is nothing short of an attempt to rewrite the history of our country,” they continued.

In July, Bowser tasked the DCFACES Working Group with “evaluating named DC Government-owned facilities and make recommendations as to what, if any, actions need to be taken if the person the facility is named for is inconsistent with DC values and in some way encouraged the oppression of African Americans and other communities of color or contributed to our long history of systemic racism.”

Bowser tasked the Working Group with reviewing DC Government-owned streets, libraries, schools, recreational centers, parks, statues in DC Government-owned parks, and other named public spaces.

TRUMP ISSUES WARNING AMID VANDALISM, EFFORT TO TOPPLE ANDREW JACKSON STATUE 

The Working Group, in its report, also recommended renaming nearly two dozen public schools in D.C. named after prominent Americans, including Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, five different U.S. presidents, Francis Scott Key, the author of the national anthem, among others.

“The Working Group report, commissioned at your behest, is a disappointing waste of taxpayer dollars,” they wrote. “The District of Columbia government is a creation of, and subordinate to, the United States Congress, and the District receives a significant portion of its budget from federal grants and federal payments.”

They added: “The District is not merely a city in the United States, it is our Nation’s capital city—and it is held in trust by the Federal government for the benefit of all Americans now and in the future.”

Jordan and Comer urged Bowser to “refrain from wasting taxpayer dollars on misadventures in historical revisionism meant to placate racial left-wing activists.”

The two went on to reference what they called “left-wing violence and destruction in the streets,”  amid months of protests and unrest in the city following the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd, who was Black, in police custody in May.

“The restoration of order to the District’s streets should be your paramount concern—not rewriting American history to fit a left-wing political agenda,” they wrote.

In June, Bowser helped name the area north of the White House “Black Lives Matter Plaza” in remembrance of Floyd. But protesters graffitied the street with the “Defund the Police” slogan, which has since been removed.

President Trump, over the summer, warned protesters who damage federal property that they could be arrested and imprisoned, and criticized state leaders for not being as tough on those who seek the destruction of historical monuments.

The president also signed an executive order to protect American monuments, memorials and statues and threatened those who try to pull them down with “long prison time.”

The order enforces laws prohibiting the desecration of public monuments, the vandalism of government property, and recent acts of violence, withholds federal support tied to public spaces from state and local governments that have failed to protect public monuments, and withdraws federal grants for jurisdictions and law enforcement agencies that fail to stop their desecration.

It also provides assistance for protecting the federal statues.

EXCLUSIVE: The top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday requested a briefing from Attorney General Bill Barr on the Justice Department’s actions in response to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody, covering everything from the federal civil rights investigation to the push to designate Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization.

In a letter obtained by Fox News, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, requested information about the DOJ’s efforts to prevent peaceful protests over Floyd’s death from escalating into violence. He cited reports that law enforcement suspect Antifa exploited some of these demonstrations to cause mayhem.

GEORGE FLOYD’S BROTHER SET TO TESTIFY AS CAPITOL HILL LAWMAKERS CONSIDER POLICE REFORM PROPOSALS

“The murder of George Floyd while in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department is an injustice. His death has rightfully sparked protests throughout the country,” Jordan wrote to Barr. “While most Americans have exercised their constitutional right to protest peacefully, Antifa and other left-wing extremists have exploited these protests to commit acts of violence and death that have devastated local communities.”

Jordan went on to claim that “Antifa and other left-wing groups have misused lawful protests  about Floyd’s death as cover to advance their goals of death and destruction.”

“This anarchy is never acceptable,” Jordan wrote.

Earlier this month, President Trump blamed Antifa for some of the violence and said that the U.S. would designate the group as a domestic terrorist organization.

The move immediately encountered resistance. The American Civil Liberties Union has said that Trump does not even have the legal authority to do this.

“Terrorism is an inherently political label, easily abused and misused,” the ACLU tweeted last month. “Let’s be clear: There is no legal authority for designating a domestic group. Any such designation would raise significant due process and First Amendment concerns.”

Jordan, in the letter to Barr, said that he agreed with the president’s action and hopes that designation “occurs promptly.”

He said he is requesting information, and a briefing from Justice Department officials, on what that would entail.

Jordan, who sits as the ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee, noted that the panel would be examining “potential legislative reforms to policing practices” in the wake of Floyd’s death, but called for the Justice Department to “update the Committee on the actions of the Justice Department and its component entities.”

Jordan also asked Barr to “explain how designating Antifa as a terrorist organization would affect the Justice Department’s authority to identify, prevent and prosecute rioting, looting and violence perpetrated by left-wing violent extremists.”

During a phone interview with Fox News, Jordan said he is looking to “get to the bottom of everything.”

“We want to know the tragedy that happened in Minneapolis with Mr. Floyd and what took place there is as wrong as wrong can be and justice needs to be served and his family deserves that,” Jordan told Fox News. “We want to get to the bottom of everything.”

“Americans understand how terrible and what a tragedy it was in what happened to George Floyd,” Jordan continued. “Americans understand that law enforcement, the vast majority of law enforcement, are heroic individuals doing their job. And Americans understand that this concept of defunding the police is crazy.”

POLICE UNIONS UNDER FIRE FROM LEFT AS CALLS FOR REFORM RING OUT IN AFTERMATH OF FLOYD DEATH

Jordan also weighed in on the “defund the police” movement, which has gained momentum in recent days, winning over Minneapolis lawmakers but meeting some resistance among Democrats on Capitol Hill.

Jordan called it “the most ridiculous public policy proposal I’ve ever heard.”

“This is complete insanity — the idea that you’re not going to have a police department in your city, that you’re going to defund the very people who risk their lives to protect all of our communities, makes absolutely no sense to me and my guess is it makes absolutely no sense to the 330 million people in this country.”

Jordan also requested Barr provide information about “the likely consequences to public safety of any successful effort to defund or disband federal, state or local law-enforcement agencies.”

Jordan said that several agencies could be involved in having authority over Antifa under the new designation, including the State Department “for the actual distinction and designation,” and the Department of Homeland Security, “which could be involved as well in making that determination,” as well as the Treasury Department.

“When Americans think about all the things that have happened in the last several weeks, they want answers to all of that,” Jordan told Fox News.

Jordan’s letter noted that the violence of the past few weeks led to deaths and serious injuries, including the death of David Dorn, a 77-year-old former police captain from St. Louis, Mo., and the death of Dave Patrick Underwood, a federal law enforcement officer in Oakland, Calif.

Jordan called the damage to property “especially in minority communities” “tragic,” and noted that in Minnesota alone, an estimated 220 buildings were damaged and nearly 500 businesses had been vandalized, looted or damaged.

Meanwhile, Barr has said that the Justice Department would treat violence by individuals associated with Antifa as domestic terrorism, and condemned the group, while asserting that the protests against police brutality and racial inequality following Floyd’s death had been “hijacked.”

“With the rioting that is occurring in many of our cities around the country, the voices of peaceful and legitimate protests have been hijacked by violent radical elements. Groups of outside radicals and agitators are exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate, violent, and extremist agenda,” Barr said last week. “It is time to stop watching the violence and to confront and stop it.”

Barr added, “The violence instigated and carried out by Antifa and other similar groups in connection with the rioting is domestic terrorism and will be treated accordingly.”

A report that the U.S. could see strong economic growth as states emerge from months of coronavirus shutdowns had U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, sounding optimistic Tuesday during an appearance on “Fox News @ Night.”

Host Shannon Bream pointed to the Politico report – in which former Obama administration adviser Jason Furman predicted a sudden rebound in the fall could spell trouble for Democrats’ election hopes.

She also noted a recent poll showing voters still trust President Trump over Joe Biden on the economy despite the virus-related slowdown.

DEMS REPORTEDLY WARNING PREELECTION ECONOMIC SURGE COULD BOOST TRUMP

“He built the greatest economy in 50 years,” Jordan said, referring to the president. “I think, as the president says, as the economists are saying — I think it’s an Obama economist – they’re saying we’re going to have this good ‘V-shaped recovery,’ which I call the Great American Comeback. I think it’s going to happen, it’s going to be strong, it’s going to be robust. It’s going to be hopefully like where we were just a few months ago before this shutdown.”

The key to the comeback will be the states choosing to reopen rather than to wait for a federal bailout, Jordan added.

“Back-to-work actually works,” he said. “That’s the best stimulus there is. And I think you’re going to see what this economist talked about.”

Jordan also blasted the Democrats, accusing them of playing politics rather than working toward bipartisan support of a U.S. economic rebound.

“The Democrats right away go to politics. Why can’t we all just be for what’s good for the country? It’s good for America, if we have a strong recovery, if we have that V, if we have this great American comeback,” he said. “That’s good for the country. But the Democrats always think politically ’cause their animosity and animus to the president is just so strong — and that’s unfortunate.”

Bream next asked Jordan about the recent departures of inspector generals from the federal government – either by resignation or firings by President Trump. She referred to U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., who accused Trump of replacing “Mr. Cleans” with “Mr. Cronies,” with other Democrats saying Trump was looking to avoid accountability.

“Look, the president’s entitled to have the people he wants around him to do the things he told the American people he was going to get accomplished,” Jordan responded. “I think that’s fine.”

Jordan then said former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had no inspector general oversight during her tenure at the State Department.

“No inspector general the whole time,” he said. “Maybe if we’d had an inspector general there, we could have gotten a little more information on what really happened, we had to do a whole select committee on the Benghazi tragedy, where Americans lost their lives on that night.”

Once again Jordan pointed at the Democrats.

“This president has been faced with more attacks from more places than any president ever,” he said, “and he’s entitled to have the people in office, supporting his administration so he can get done what he told the American people he was going to do.”

Jordan, 56, who serves as ranking member of both the House judiciary and oversight committees, then addressed the Michael Flynn case, in which the Justice Department sought to drop charges of lying to investigators against the former White House national security adviser. Jordan said he hoped to soon see transcripts of Flynn’s phone calls with former Russian diplomat Sergey Kislyak, which reportedly sparked the Russia investigation into the Trump campaign.

“I really want to see that call,” Jordan said, “and just as importantly I want to see the 302, the notes taken when the two agents – Comey snuck ’em into the White House to set up General Flynn and trap General Flynn.”

Jordan added he was hoping that John Ratcliffe, the newly installed director of national intelligence, would make the information available.”

Jordan also credited Ratcliffe’s predecessor, Rick Grenell, with doing an “outstanding job” of uncovering information regarding the Flynn case.

“We know Rick Grenell, in three months — I said this last week, I think — compare three months of Rick Grenell to three years of [FBI Director] Chris Wray,” Jordan said. “Rick Grenell’s done an outstanding job. John Ratcliffe’s going to continue that outstanding work.

”But I look forward to seeing this document because what we’ve learned because of Rick Grenell’s efforts, [Flynn lawyer] Sidney Powell’s efforts, Attorney General Barr’s efforts … Jim Comey was the common denominator through it all. I hope John Durham [investigating the origins of the Russia probe] is still giving Mr. Comey a strong look.”
