]]>An Indiana woman was fatally shot earlier this month following an alleged argument between her family and a group of Black Lives Matter supporters, her family says.
The woman, 24-year-old Jessica Doty Whitaker, was walking along Indianapolis Canal Walk with her fiancé, Jose Ramirez, and two other people around 3 a.m. on July 5 when someone in their group used a racial slur, Fox 59 reported.
Whitaker was taken to a hospital where she died, her family says.

A group of nearby strangers overheard the comment and confronted Whitaker’s group, according to the station.
Ramirez alleged that the group shouted “Black Lives Matter,” to which either Whitaker or someone else in their group reportedly responded with, “All Lives Matter.”
A brief argument ensued until both sides separated after realizing the other was armed, Fox 59 reported. Ramirez claimed that both sides managed to resolve the argument before separating.
But minutes later, someone reportedly opened fire from a nearby bridge, striking Whitaker, before running away, the station said.

“It was squashed, and they went up the hill and left we thought, but they were sitting on St. Clair waiting for us to come under the bridge and that’s when she got shot,” Ramirez said.
Ramirez admitted to returning fire but did not hit anyone. He told Fox 59 that he has had to explain what happened to Whitaker’s 3-year-old son.
“It’s hard to tell him his mom is in heaven and if you want to talk to her you have to look up and say, ‘I love you mom,’” Ramirez said.
Police have not independently verified whether the supposed argument over “Black Lives Matter” occurred or if the fatal shooting was even connected.
Fox News has made multiple attempts to reach out to the Indianapolis Metro Police Department seeking comment.

Authorities in the US state of Indiana are investigating allegations that a group of white men attacked and attempted to “lynch” a black man at a 4 July weekend gathering.
Viral video of the incident shared by Vauhxx Booker shows a man on all fours, held down by a white man as onlookers shout for him to be released.
In an accompanying post, Mr Booker wrote that he was pinned to a tree and beaten near Lake Monroe.
He called 911 but no arrests were made.
On Monday, hundreds gathered outside Monroe County Courthouse in Bloomington to demand arrests be made in Mr Booker’s case. As the peaceful protest was drawing to a close, a speeding vehicle struck at least one person. Organisers of the protest told the BBC’s US partner CBS News that a woman was taken to hospital, and her condition is unknown.
According to Mr Booker, a local civil rights activist and member of the Monroe County Human Rights Commission, he and his friends had gathered to watch the lunar eclipse at Lake Monroe when they encountered a man donning a hat with a Confederate flag print who told them they were on private property.
Later on, when Mr Booker and his friends approached the man and his group to “smooth things over”, the interaction “quickly became aggressive”, he wrote. “I was almost the victim of an attempted lynching”, he said, adding that the men threatened to “get a noose”.
Two of the men allegedly jumped Mr Booker from behind and knocked him to the ground before three others joined.
“The five were able to easily overwhelm me and got me to the ground and dragged me pinning my body against a tree as they began pounding on my head and ripped off some of my hair,” he wrote.
While bystanders shouted for the assailants to release him, Mr Booker said the men said they would “break his arms” before saying “get a noose”. These alleged comments were not captured in the posted video footage.
According to Mr Booker, these bystanders were able to get the attackers off him, though they continued to shout racial slurs. He suffered a concussion as a result of the attack, he wrote.
Mr Booker said he called 911, but was transferred to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Agents eventually reported to the park but made no arrests.
In a statement, the Department of Natural Resources confirmed it received a call regarding a battery “on private property adjacent to Monroe Reservoir property”.
The department’s law enforcement division is now working with the Monroe County Prosecutor’s office “to ensure a lawful resolution,” the statement said. “This matter remains under investigation and no further information will be released at this time.”
The prosecutor’s office did not immediately return a request for comment.
In a statement, Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton condemned the incident, in which he said Mr Booker was “physically assaulted and denounced and threatened with racial epithets”. The mayor said he was “reaching out” to the law enforcement and the Monroe County Prosecutor regarding the encounter, although the city does not have jurisdiction over the investigation.
On Tuesday, former Democratic presidential candidate and Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg weighed in on Twitter, describing the “violent show of racism” as “sickening”.
“Something is deeply wrong in Indiana,” he wrote.

]]>An Indiana woman marked her 100th birthday with coronavirus in the rearview mirror.
Leora Martin, a resident of Greenleaf Health Campus, an assisted-living facility in the state, learned recently that she shook off a positive COVID-19 diagnosis from April.
The news came a week before her birthday on June 13, but didn’t come as a surprise, according to ABC11. That’s because Martin is no stranger to adversity — and she’s a pro at bouncing back. Last year she beat pneumonia. She’s also a cancer survivor. And she lived through WWII.
To celebrate the milestone year, she and her twin sister who lives in California, caught up over Zoom, singing Happy Birthday to each other and reminiscing about their childhoods.
Martin, recalling her COVID-19 recovery and other medical triumphs, told The Elkhart Truth she’s relieved to be in the clear. “You have to remember, I’ve been through cancer,” she said. “I had to go to the hospital for five days with rods in my body –- that was not comfortable, but I survived. They didn’t think I would survive pneumonia last year either, but I did.”

Martin was one of 76 Greenleaf residents to test positive for COVID-19, as the outbreak takes a particularly hard toll on nursing homes and senior centers. According to the state’s virus website, roughly 5,147 long-term care facility residents have been infected, with 1,140 cases ending in death. There are 43,140 cases in the state overall, with 2,386 deaths.

This is how often you should wash your cloth face mask.

The advice to wear face masks to help stop the spread of the coronavirus ranks among the most contested public health recommendations of all time.
People who say it’s their right to not mask engage in often heated debate with those who point to the weight of scientific evidence. From stink-eye stares in the grocery store to vitriolic Twitter exchanges, emotions run high.
Public health officials have touted the importance of mask-wearing again and again and again. And yet …
“We have messaged this in every way we can,” Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box said. “There’s some people you’re not going to change their mind no matter how much you talk to them.”
Whether considered a symbol of government intrusion, an encumbrance to good breathing or an annoying habit that is difficult to make, mask-wearing has its detractors.
Government leaders find themselves in a bind. Some states or municipalities, including at least two counties in Indiana, have mandated wearing face masks in public indoor spaces. Thursday California became the latest state to adopt a similar policy, joining New York and New Jersey among others in requiring face masks in public when social distancing is not possible.
But a number of other states and large cities, Indiana and Indianapolis among them, have not. Instead, public officials strongly recommend people wear a mask because otherwise they might unknowingly infect someone else.
Count former Major League Baseball player Aubrey Huff among the anti-maskers. He said in a Tweet that went viral that he would rather die from coronavirus than live the rest of his life in fear, wearing a mask. Although he acknowledged that the coronavirus is real, he said he was trying to “free” Americans so they can breathe freely.
The decision not to wear a mask, even where it is not mandated, can come with consequences.

A self-described “small government person,” Fishers resident Megan Stoner said she does not appreciate officials telling her what to do. The 22-year-old says she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and has yet to wear a mask. Although she has a letter from her therapist, some stores prohibit her from entering without a mask.
“It does unfortunately dictate where I can go,” she said.
Because she does not feel comfortable in a mask, Stoner said she is careful to social distance wherever she goes, from the grocery store to church.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention experts argue that social distancing, hand-washing and mask-wearing work as a three-pronged attack against coronavirus. Numerous studies have found wearing face masks can lower the risk of spreading the disease, particularly if both the infected person and the people with whom the person comes into contact wears one.
Two infected hairstylists in Missouri recently came into contact with more than 100 clients and coworkers. Everyone wore masks. No additional people developed the illness.
Requiring, but not enforcing, mask-wearing
Early in May, St. Joseph County enacted an order requiring people to don face coverings in public indoor spaces if they could not maintain a 6-foot distance between themselves and others.
But the county has no interest in punishing offenders, said Dr. Robert Einterz, St. Joseph County’s health officer.
“Really what we’re doing is trying to do what is right,” he said. “We would try to reinforce good behavior, to try to educate the public about the spread of the disease. But we felt that any sort of punitive method would not be effective.”

While not everyone was happy with the order, most people and businesses in the county readily complied, Einterz said. The order did make exceptions for children younger than 2 and those with certain medical conditions.
Einterz said that without the order St. Joseph County would have had more cases of COVID-19. He said the county would likely reissue the order when it expires next month.
“Do I think the entire state and the entire country should be required to wear masks? Yes, I do, when physical distancing cannot be maintained,” Einterz said. “We don’t have a lot in our armamentarium to fight this disease. Face masks, contact tracing, testing, physical distancing and hand sanitizer are arrows in our quiver, and I think we should be using all of them.”

In neighboring Elkhart County, mask-wearing is not required. Elkhart has had a much higher rate of disease per 10,000 residents than St Joseph has had, 116.3 compared to 59.3. Earlier this month Elkhart saw more new cases of coronavirus on some days than far more populous Marion County.
Elkhart County health officials considered requiring the wearing of masks but so far have decided against taking that step, said Dr. Lydia Mertz, the county’s health officer. She said the county did not want to send the wrong message that mask-wearing is more important than social distancing or hand-washing.
In Tippecanoe County, Dr. Jeremy Adler, the county’s health officer, said the health department was still trying to get businesses to install mask policies and to get residents to act as if masks were mandatory in public settings where they can’t guarantee social distancing. But Adler came up short of saying Tippecanoe County planned on mandatory mask orders, even as he pointed to a recent climb in the number of cases in Florida, Texas and Arizona.
“What’s happening in those states is an unfortunate reminder of just how easily this virus can spread and how things can easily take a turn for the worse with COVID-19,” Adler said last week.
Public health authorities should put their energies into promoting mask-wearing rather than requiring it, said Seema Mohapatra, an associate professor at the IU McKinney School of Law. Mohapatra recently co-authored an article in the Washington and Lee Law Review Online that argues against mandating mask use.
Some people can’t wear masks because of disabilities, she said. Others may fear that wearing a mask may make them look like a criminal. In addition, requiring masks opens the door to punishing those who don’t do so.
Now that the issue has been politicized, it would help to have people on both sides of the aisle wear masks and to invest in public service campaigns to teach people about why wearing masks benefits everyone, Mohapatra said.
“I really do think that will work better and do less harm than having a requirement where it is subject to both actual policing and citizen policing,” Mohapatra said.
Creating a new habit is difficult
Mertz said she believes some of the negative reaction in Elkhart County to wearing masks stems from the unfamiliarity of doing so. With time, she said, she hopes that more people would adopt the practice.
“As with anything different and new, it takes some getting used to,” she said. “I think that once people have been around masks a little more, it will be easier for them to slip it on when they’re going into a public place. … When they realize how important wearing a mask is for the lives of their loved ones and family, we will see a lot more mask-wearing around here.”
Persuading people to adopt a new behavior can be challenging, said Katie Boucher, an assistant psychology professor at the University of Indianapolis. People may decide whether to take up a new habit based on what they see others doing, she said.
People who know others who have been sick with the coronavirus or died from it may be more likely to wear a mask. For others, all the controversy makes the decision that much harder.
“Wearing a mask is a new habit, and that in and of itself is tiring,” Boucher said. “It seems like an easy decision. … It takes a long time to come up with a new habit, and then when we see other people not doing it, it gives us another reason not to do it.”
Making people wear face masks can be a difficult sell
The issue has become so controversial that a manager at a north side retail store refused to comment on its mask policy, saying there’s no way to win in the argument. The store has heard from irate customers both for and against masks.
Georgetown Market on the west side asks that employees keep a mask on hand should a customer come near, but they do not have to wear the facial covering for their entire shift, manager Ashley Williams said. Customers are not required to wear masks, though most of them do.
The natural foods grocer arrived at this plan to accommodate some employees who said health conditions precluded them from wearing a mask for their whole shift.
“It does have to be visibly on them, close to hand, where they can pull it up if they do have a customer that doesn’t feel comfortable if they’re not wearing their mask and then they can take it back down,” Williams said. “As a general rule of thumb, if you see a customer with a mask on, you should probably put yours on.”
As difficult as it may be to persuade some adults to wear masks, public health officials have an even greater challenge ahead: the reopening of schools. Students will be asked to wear masks when they are in the hallways, on school buses, or in other places where they can’t social distance.
If masks are required, Box has said, some parents may decide not to send their children to school.
Attitudes and behavior may change over time. At first LaGrange County health officer Dr. T. Anthony Pechin did not think requiring masks was necessary. But after the state reopened, coronavirus cases in the county started to climb while other counties saw stable or declining numbers. In LaGrange County, fewer than a quarter of the people Pechin saw were wearing masks.
Last week the Health Department issued an order that masks must be worn indoors and outdoors in public and private places if people can’t maintain a 6-foot distance from those outside their family.

Now, more than a decade later, her family believes they know what happened to her.
Preliminary autopsy results suggest that human remains found in a car that had submerged in a pond are likely those of Westenbarger, FOX 59 of Indianapolis reported.

Two fishermen spotted the algae-covered vehicle Wednesday and reported the find to authorities, who had the car pulled from the water. The license plate was a match for the vehicle Westenbarger owned.
It was a gold Cadillac with Ohio plates saying MS ESTER, the Howard County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a statement posted on Facebook.
“That’s my sister’s car. It’s Ester’s car, there’s no doubt about it. It’s Ester’s car. Whether or not that’s her in there or not, we don’t know that” Westenbarger’s brother, Bill “Scratch” Pelfree told FOX 59 on Thursday.
Forensic dentistry and examination of DNA will ultimately determine if the remains found inside the vehicle are those of the missing woman, FOX 59 reported.
Family members now believe Westenbarger accidentally drove into the pond while traveling home from the bar in 2009, the report said.

The woman’s son, Dustin, said family members were feeling a degree of closure since the car and remains were discovered.
“I feel like prayers and everyone who has prayed for us, those have been answered,” he told FOX 59.

]]>The parents of Indiana Hoosiers wide receiver Cam Wilson were found dead Friday night in two separate locations as police investigate the circumstances around their deaths.
Cassondra Wilson, a prominent businesswoman in Columbus, Ind., was found dead at an apartment building around 9 p.m. Friday, FOX 59 reported Monday. Police said Wilson did not live in the apartment she was found in and an autopsy revealed she died from a gunshot wound to the head. Police did not reveal who was living in the apartment.
Wilson’s death was ruled a homicide, FOX 59 reported.
About three hours later, Cassondra Wilson’s ex-husband Troy Wilson was found dead in an office building in Indianapolis. An autopsy revealed he died by suicide.
Columbus police Lt. Matt Harris said investigators have not officially determined the case was a murder-suicide.

Cassondra Wilson was the founder and CEO of “Trainerconnect,” which assists in specialized training and certification for employers in the area, according to FOX 59. She was also a member of the Indiana Minority Business Council and the Governor’s Commission for Supplier Diversity.
The two were the parents of the Indiana wide receiver. Hoosiers football coach Tom Allen released a statement on the Wilsons’ deaths.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Cam and his family,” Allen said in a statement. “We’ve been in contact and communication with Cam once we learned of this tragedy. He is a tremendous young man, and we will continue to assist and support him in any and all ways. We ask everyone to respect Cam and his family’s privacy during this difficult time.”

Governor Holcomb COVID-19 response update
Governor Eric Holcomb and state leaders are providing an update on the COVID-19 response.
Late next week, a cleaning service will be made available for medical workers, dentists and others essential workers using N95 masks. The service will allow each N95 mask to be cleaned up to 20 times, which will greatly help with the amount of PPE available.
ISDh announced increased contact tracing to track people who came in contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. When contacts are identified, they will need to quarantine for 14 days.
The contact tracing along with the increased testing announced on Tuesday are critical steps in Indiana reopening and moving away from the stay-at-home order.

Hamilton County Health Department releases long-term care data
The Hamilton County Health Department says has decided to start releasing the number of deaths at long-term care facilities effective Wednesday. It will issue a new report every Monday.

State officials say they do not plan to release the names of long-term care facilities with either cases or deaths. It is up to the facility to communicate directly to residents and their representatives.
New guidelines issued to all long-term care facilities order them to communicate the number of cases and deaths on a daily basis, along with the measures the facility is taking to keep people safe.
The state is releasing aggregate numbers of cases and deaths each Monday. (see chart below) As of last Friday, the 260 deaths in 85 different long-term care facilities accounted for 32 percent of the state’s deaths related to COVID-19.
ISDH updated COVID-19 numbers
There are 605 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state, according to Wednesday’s ISDH report, and 63 more deaths. Those deaths happened from April 7 to April 28. That brings the total of confirmed cases to 17,182 while more than 900 people have died from the virus in Indiana.
According to the updated report, a total of 964 Hoosiers have been confirmed to have died of COVID-19, an increase of 63 over the previous 24 hours. Another 101 probable deaths have been reported, taking the total deaths from COVID-19 in the state to more than 1,000, if you count “probably deaths.” Probable deaths are those for which a physician listed COVID-19 as a contributing cause based on X-rays, scans and other clinical symptoms but for which no positive test is on record.
Marion County had the most new cases, at 218.

Company says drug proved effective against COVID-19
A biotech company said its experimental drug has proved effective against the new coronavirus in a major U.S. government study that put it to a strict test.
Gilead Sciences’s remdesivir would be the first treatment to pass such a test against the virus, which has killed more than 218,000 people since it emerged late last year. Having a treatment could have a profound effect on the global pandemic, especially because health officials say any vaccine is likely a year or more away.
The study, run by the National Institutes of Health, tested remdesivir versus usual care in about 800 hospitalized coronavirus patients around the world. The main result is how long it takes patients to recover.
Gilead gave no details on results Wednesday, but said an announcement is expected soon. NIH officials did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
Latest US, world numbers
There have been more than 1,012,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States as of 4 a.m. ET Wednesday, according to Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. death toll is more than 58,000 while nearly 116,000 have recovered. Nearly 5.8 million tests for COVID-19 have been performed in the U.S.
Worldwide, there have been more than 3.1 million cases with 217,000 deaths and 929,000 recoveries.
For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
South Korea experts downplay possible reinfections
South Korean infectious disease experts have downplayed concerns that patients could get reinfected with the new coronavirus after fully recovering.
While hundreds in South Korea have tested positive again after their release from hospitals, Oh Myoung-don, who heads the country’s central clinical committee on new infectious diseases, told a news conference on Wednesday there was a “high possibility” that such test results were flawed.
He said South Korea’s standard real-time PCR tests, designed to amplify the genetic materials of the virus so that even tiny quantities are detected, doesn’t reliably distinguish between remains of dead virus and infectious particles. He said lab tests on animals suggest that COVID-19 patients would maintain immunity for at least a year after their infections.
He also said it was unlikely that the virus could be reactivated after remaining dormant when it doesn’t seem to be a type that causes chronic illnesses.
President Trump says US closer to testing international air travelers
President Donald Trump said his administration is considering requiring travelers on certain incoming international flights to undergo temperature and virus checks to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.
“We’re looking at doing it on the international flights coming out of areas that are heavily infected,” Trump said Tuesday at the White House. “We will be looking into that in the very near future.”
Trump said it has not been determined yet whether the federal government or the airlines would conduct the testing. “Maybe it’s a combination of both,” he said.
Houston lab mass-processes FDA-approved antibody test
A Houston medical diagnostic lab is now capable of testing thousands of blood samples for coronavirus antibodies.
SynerGene Laboratories, a facility owned by Principle Health Systems, is offering a COVID-19 test developed by pharmaceuticals giant, Abbott Laboratories. It tests for antibodies for the novel coronavirus and can detect whether a person has been exposed.
What differentiates the test from other antibody screenings is that the Abbott Labs version is approved by the Food and Drug Administration, Principle Health Systems CEO James Dieter said Tuesday.
“There are a lot of tests on the market right now that are not, but Abbott did go through the painstaking process of getting FDA approval,” Dieter said.
Dozens of blood tests are being marketed in the United States that are not entirely accurate or comparable to one another, according to a report released by researchers at Johns Hopkins University.
Even a small rate of false positives can substantially distort the understanding of how many people have been infected. It’s even possible false positives could outnumber real positives.
