To honor the life and legacy of death of death of civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., said on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday that the Voting Rights Advancement Act should be passed.

“I know that if he was still with us, he would be leading that fight,” Bass said of the Georgia congressman who died Friday.

“What we have to do is live up to his legacy. We need to continue that fight for social justice. And again, the first thing we need to do is to pass the voting rights act and get it signed,” Bass told ABC’s “This Week” Co-anchor Martha Raddatz.

Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., also a co-sponsor of the Voting Rights Advancement Act, highlighted Lewis’ career-long fight for voting rights and equality.

“John Lewis has left us a great roadmap. And if we can continue to be half of the servant fighting for social justice that John Lewis was, then we’re going to be OK.”

In December, House Democrats passed the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019, which would restore certain key protections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act against racial discrimination that the Supreme Court struck down in 2013.

“I have said this before, and I will say it again. The vote is precious. It is almost sacred. It is the most powerful non-violent tool we have in a democracy,” Lewis said in a statement supporting the bill in 2019.

Known as the “conscience of the U.S. Congress,” Lewis spent over three decades in the House of Representatives after rising as a leader of the 1960s civil rights movement.

A central organizer of the 1961 Freedom Rides, Lewis went on to lead the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), speaking at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom at the age of 23.

Two years later, in 1965, in what would become known as “Bloody Sunday,” Lewis and hundreds of demonstrators in a march for voting rights were beaten by dozens of state troopers in Selma, Alabama. One of the troopers fractured Lewis’ skull, scarring his head for the rest of his life.

The events in Selma shocked the country and led, in part, to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Asked by Raddatz about that legacy on “This Week,” Demings, also a former police chief and officer in Orlando, Florida, remarked on how she saw the change Lewis’ work helped enact first-hand when she made a pilgrimage to Selma with him in recent years.

“Walking across the Edmund Pettus Bridge with John Lewis … I remember getting to the other side, and especially as a former law enforcement officer, and thinking about Bloody Sunday and how that day, John Lewis and others were basically tortured and beaten,” said Demings. “But on this Sunday, we walked across, and the troopers were there — very diverse group of troopers, I might add — were there to welcome us and to make sure that we were OK.”

Demings also said Lewis saw his own legacy “demonstrated every day” in more recent Black Lives Matter protests and marches against police brutality and for racial justice — demonstrations which have drawn ongoing criticism from President Donald Trump.

In recent years, Lewis had an adversarial relationship with Trump, refusing to attend his inauguration over claims of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

The president fired back against Lewis days before his swearing-in writing in a tweet that the congressman “should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complain about the election results. All talk, talk talk — no action of results. Sad!”

At the time, Lewis was one of the first high-ranking Democrats to allege Trump’s presidency was illegitimate due to Russia’s interference in the election.

The morning after Lewis’ death, Bass took to Twitter and urged the president to abstain from saying anything about the civil rights icon.

“While the nation mourns the passing of a national hero, please say nothing. Please don’t comment on the life of Congressman Lewis. … Please let us mourn in peace,” Bass wrote.

Trump did offer condolences over Lewis’ death hours later on Twitter.

“I’m glad that the president’s tweet was appropriate … but I think that we need to have the flags at half mast, until he is laid to rest. And I believe that his legacy will live on,” Bass said.

ABC News’ Benjamin Siu and Elizabeth McLaughlin contributed to this report.

Former U.S. Army Staff Sgt. David Bellavia, a Medal of Honor recipient, said Memorial Day is a time for him to take stock and reflect on whether he is living his life in a way that honors those who were lost.

“I speak for myself when I say that Memorial Day for me is a day of inventory,” said Bellavia on Fox Nation’s “Modern Warriors: A Memorial Day Special,” hosted by fellow veteran and Fox News co-host Pete Hegseth.

NEW SUBSCRIPTIONS TO FOX NATION INCLUDE A DONATION TO ‘FOLDS OF HONOR’ TO SUPPORT MILITARY FAMILIES

“What kind of a man am I?” he continued. “Because we believe that these men that we lost [at] such a young age and prematurely, what would they have been if they were 45?”

Bellavia was joined in this special edition of “Modern Warriors” by fellow veterans Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Johnny “Joey” Jones, Staff Sgt. Nate Boyer, and Lt. Col. Dan Rooney, who continues to serve in the 301st fighter squadron.

Each man told the stories of fellow service members who sacrificed their lives for the country.

Bellavia remembered Command Sgt. Maj. Steve Faulkenburg, who was killed during the second battle of Fallujah while leading his troops and a group of wounded Iraqis through an ambush.

“If he decided to take a job as an elementary principal, he would be a horrible failure,” joked Bellavia, who fought alongside Faulkenburg in Fallujah. “But luckily, he chose to be a sergeant major in the infantry.”

“His greatest legacy is the fact that he raised sons like they were his own,” he continued, “He was our surrogate father.”

Bellavia recalled that Faulkenburg was 45-years-old when he was killed — an age that a younger Bellavia considered being beyond comprehension

“At that time, I thought that was the oldest thing in the world,” he joked again, “His hips breaking down. His knees didn’t work. He had a permanent scowl on his face.”

MEET THE VETERANS THAT LEFT THE MILITARY BUT NOT THE FIGHT: DAVE EUBANK AND THE FREE BURMA RANGERS

“That’s how old I am right now,” Bellavia said — turning somber. “And to think of all these men that we lost, they’re never going to go through these spaces of life that we go through and just take for granted.

“The one thing that the families of the fallen should know is that, in my circumstances, when we lost Falkenberg, we fought with a reserve that we never knew was humanly possible.”

“Had it not been for that direct sacrifice — I don’t know if we make it through. I don’t know if we’re as tenacious as we were because come hell or high water, we were going to avenge that man and we were going to make him proud,” Bellavia concluded. “He’s the reason why we were there and we were going to fight like demons until we defeated that enemy.”

On June 25, 2019, President Trump presented the Medal of Honor to Bellavia for his actions as a squad leader during the second Battle of Fallujah, making Bellavia the first living Iraq War veteran to receive the recognition.

In a previous episode of Fox Nation’s “Modern Warriors”Hegseth sat down with Bellavia to talk about the experience.

“As far as knocking down doors and shooting guys, it was always — you kick down the door and there’s a guy with an AK.  He just ran into a house and you ran into him and its the O.K. coral,” remembered Bellavia.

MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT DAVID BELLAVIA ON THE SECOND BATTLE OF FALLUJAH

In the Medal of Honor ceremony, President Trump recounted Bellavia’s heroism.

“He quickly encountered an insurgent who was about to fire a rocket-propelled grenade at his squad. David once again jumped into danger and killed him before he had a chance to launch that grenade,” said the president.

“Next, two more insurgents came out of hiding and fired at David.  He returned fire, killing them both.  Then, a third assailant burst out of a wardrobe… and opened fire.  David shot and wounded the man, but he escaped up the stairs.  Racing after him, David engaged in hand-to-hand combat and killed him, too,” read the president.

As the details of Ahmaud Arbery’s murder and the initial refusal of local authorities to prosecute his killers have come further to light this month, my thoughts have been turning more and more to my grandmother.

As a child of the Great Depression and the granddaughter of enslaved people, Wanda Crow was born into a family that survived the worst of America. My grandmother’s stories of my family’s survival in the midst of tribulation—including one dating back the late 1800s, describing how my grandfather’s uncle was nearly lynched by the KKK—resonate even more whenever another modern American horror story like that of Arbery’s death is made public.

And though my great-uncle narrowly escaped, my grandmother still holds a recollection of stories of how her mother witnessed those who didn’t—throngs of mangled black bodies, hung by the dozen from oak trees in Arkansas.

These public, celebratory mutilations, which often targeted farmers and landowners, weren’t simple executions. They were warnings—threats of violent torture for any black person who sought equality, or worse, political power. These crimes also revealed the perpetrators’ deep fear of their black neighbors—a uniquely American fear that reduces innocent black people to criminals, so unworthy of life that their death is fit for a stage.

With the emergence of video footage of Arbery’s killing this month, his murder has been correctly recast as a “modern lynching.” As with similar tragedies of the recent past, it should force Americans to reckon with their country’s dark past and the broken legal systems that allow such injustices to continue. In Arbery’s case, his killers claimed the protection of a citizen’s arrest statute that, if used as prosecutors originally envisioned, would be tantamount to allowing legalized lynching, and must be repealed.

As a reminder, here are some of the key details of the 25-year-old Arbery’s death.

On Feb. 23, Arbery made his way down an ashen stretch of the Satilla Shores neighborhood—a quiet suburb near downtown Brunswick, Georgia—during a routine afternoon run. On his route, he ran past a former Glynn County police officer and detective, Gregory McMichael, 64, and his son Travis, 34. The two men, who later claimed that they suspected that Arbery was involved in a recent string of break-ins in their neighborhood, proceeded to grab their guns, jump in their white pickup truck, and trail the former high school athlete for more than four minutes.

According to one officer’s interview with Gregory, which became the sole basis of the incident’s initial police report, the McMichaels attempted a “citizen’s arrest,” which led to a vicious tussle as Arbery “violently attacked” the father-and-son pair and “started fighting over the shotgun, at which point Travis fired a shot and then a second later there was a second shot.” On this basis, prosecutors declined to try the case and the McMichaels appeared to go scot free. Then, earlier this month, video of Arbery’s death was made public. As in other recent similar incidents, such as the deaths of Eric Garner and Stephon Clark at the hands of police, the footage subverted the killers’ claims in graphic detail.

That footage shows Arbery running around the perimeter of the McMichaels’ vehicle, then grappling with Travis as his father, Gregory, stands in the truck bed like a sniper and fires off three shotgun shells—two of which strike Arbery in the chest. Just two days after the video emerged, and thousands flooded social media with demands for the McMichaels’ arrest, the two men were charged with murder and aggravated assault. It took nearly two full months, though, for Arbery’s killers to face arrest after they cited the “citizen’s arrest” statute.

In addition to the initial resistance of the district attorney to hear the pleas of Arbery’s family, the case involved a revolving door of prosecutors—two of whom had previous ties with the McMichaels that led to consecutive recusals—as well as conflicting accounts about the potential involvement in the McMichaels’ pursuit of the man who filmed the video.

Such concerns have led activists across the state, like Georgia NAACP President James Woodall, to call for an investigation of the initial inquiry. Woodall told me that the local NAACP has also called for the immediate resignation of Brunswick district attorney Jackie Johnson for not issuing an arrest warrant following Arbery’s death, a revision to the state’s use of force statute (the training for which Gregory was penalized for skipping when he was previously on the job), and a complete repeal of the citizen’s arrest statute in Georgia. As the local NAACP has sought justice for Arbery, it has taken particular aim at fighting citizen’s arrest. As Woodall described it, the law has a deep history going back to the era of slavery and was “originally used to help white slave owners to catch and return enslaved people attempting to escape North.”

It’s no accident that such a law was used to try to justify Arbery’s killing. “We have two decades of research to show that state laws which protect individuals for aggressively protecting their property, like the citizen’s arrest laws, are often used as cover for an increase in racially-biased violence,” New School professor Maya Wiley told me. Wiley, who served as the chair of the New York Civilian Complaint Review Board following Garner’s death, pointed out that white people are also less safe as a result of laws that encourage vigilantism, which have proved to increase homicide rates and emergency room visits across racial groups. The rendering of Arbery’s death as a lynching—as described by a range of local and national leaders from the mayor of Atlanta to Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden—makes sense, Wiley notes, because the killing follows a familiar formula that includes the presumption of guilt placed on an innocent black victim by the killers.

That presumption of guilt, which was given official credence thanks to the citizen’s arrest statute, extended to the views of local authorities as well. In a letter to the police, George E. Barnhill—the second prosecutor on Arbery’s case who has since recused himself because his son had previously worked with Gregory McMichael—cited Arbery’s engagement with law enforcement as a teenager to “help explain his apparent aggressive nature and his possible thought pattern to attack an armed man.”

The depiction of blameless black men like Arbery as aggressors and criminals isn’t just reinforced in popular culture; it’s demonstrated in research, including a recent series of studies by the American Psychological Association, which showed that people have a “tendency to perceive black men as larger and more threatening than similarly sized white men.” And for black men and boys, such damning racial casting begins at a terrifyingly early age. (One need only look at the death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice to see this fact.) A separate study from the APA found that black boys as young as 10 years old were “more likely to be mistaken as older, be perceived as guilty and face police violence if accused of a crime.”

This presumption of guilt—with its continued use to justify laws like Georgia’s citizen’s arrest statute—is the same that contributed to countless lynchings throughout American history. Today, that inescapable comparison is why Arbery’s death has left black people afraid to jog, or why Jordan Davis’ death has made us afraid to play music loudly, or why Stephon Clark’s death has made us afraid to carry cellphones, and more recently, why the death of Breonna Taylor, who was shot eight times in March as Louisville, Kentucky, police raided the wrong home in the middle of the night, has even made us afraid to go to bed at night.

As long as black lives are threatened by such violence, there is no way for laws like Georgia’s citizen’s arrest statute to remain on the books without being used to justify that violence. If we learn anything from Arbery’s killing, it’s that repealing such laws is the best possible way to prevent deaths like his in the future—and better protect people from the dangers of living while black in America.

First responders on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic in Colorado got a special show of support Saturday from the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds said the eight-jet, hourlong flyover was a tribute to health care workers, police, military personnel and other essential employees.

“Our team is honored to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the countless Coloradans working every day to support their communities during this difficult time in our nation,” Lt. Col. John Caldwell, the commander of the demonstration squadron, said in a news release. “We want Coloradans to look up from their homes and enjoy the display of American resolve and pride while keeping frontline responders in their hearts.”

CORONAVIRUS IN THE US: STATE-BY-STATE BREAKDOWN

The F-16 Fighting Falcons out of Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada soared over Colorado communities starting at 12: 50 MDT.

The flyover began in northern Colorado, headed south to Boulder and passed through the Denver area. The flight path took the pilots over more than 40 medical facilities.

Many people were able to watch the precision-flying formation zoom overhead..

Amber Meyer, who has been taking care of COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Denver for a month, told FOX31 the flyover meant a lot to first responders.

“It’s amazing, completely amazing. We appreciate … the support,” Meyer told FOX31.

The nurse said she’s bedside with COVID-19 patients sometimes for 14 hours a day.

“It’s hard to kind of paint the picture we are dealing with on a daily basis,” Meyer said, adding, “It’s really hard on us because the patients don’t have their families. They’re scared. They don’t know what’s going on.”

THUNDERBIRDS HONOR CORONAVIRUS RESPONDERS WITH LAS VEGAS FLYOVER FOR ‘TRUE HEROES’

After passing over the Denver area, the Thunderbirds traveled to Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, Fort Carson, and Pueblo. The unique series of flyovers on Saturday meant that the Thunderbirds needed to rely on aerial refueling support from a KC-135 tanker aircraft from McConnell Air Force Base and March Air Reserve Base.

“Just like in combat operations across the globe, the Thunderbirds rely on tanker support to expand our reach and flexibility to conduct complex operations like this,” Caldwell said.

“The Thunderbirds are thrilled to continue on a tradition of culminating the Air Force Academy graduation and welcoming our newest second lieutenants into our Air Force,” Caldwell said. “While the coronavirus pandemic has curtailed many of the celebrations that graduating cadets usually enjoy, we are proud to provide this one defining moment for these young American’s lives as they become officers in the world’s greatest Air Force.”

The Thunderbirds had asked that people refrain from gathering in large groups to view the flyover.

Medal of Honor recipient Bennie Adkins of Alabama has succumbed to the coronavirus after a long battle.

The Vietnam War hero was 86 when he died Friday.

“We are deeply saddened to notify you that after a courageous battle with COVID-19, Command Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins departed this life today, with beloved family at his bedside,” according to the foundation that bears his name.

ALVIN TOWNLEY: CORONAVIRUS STRIKES MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT – WHOSE STORY IS A REMINDER OF DUTY AND SERVICE

He spent 20 years in the Army, 13 as a Green Beret.

He deployed to Vietnam three times, his heroic efforts in one 1966 battle later recognized in 2014 with the awarding of the Medal of Honor. His Medal of Honor citation in part reads:

“During the thirty-eight hour battle and forty-eight hours of escape and evasion, fighting with mortars, machine guns, recoilless rifles, small arms, and hand grenades, it was estimated that Sergeant First Class Adkins killed between 135 and 175 of the enemy while sustaining eighteen different wounds to his body.”

“Sergeant First Class Adkins’ extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Detachment A-102, 5th Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces and the United States Army.”

At the time he was awarded the Medal of Honor, Adkins told a news conference at Fort Benning that he couldn’t accept the honor alone, according to the Duncan Banner, an Oklahoma newspaper. Adkins was orginally from Oklahoma.

“What I attribute this to is not my actions, but the actions of the other 16 Americans that were with us in the battle of Camp A Shau and the five Americans that paid the ultimate price,” he said.

He was also quoted as saying, “The bottom line is that it was just not my time (to die) that day.”

His son Keith Adkins told the Opelika-Auburn News on Friday that the family was so proud of the hospital staff at EAMC.

“They worked so hard — for everybody, not just him. He was in there for three weeks, and they never quit working on him,” he said.

He said his father should be remembered not just for his heroism in Vietnam.

“We want his legacy to not only be his life in the military, but what he did afterwards; how he went on to school, gained an education, started a local business, and especially his support of the community,” the son said.
