Demonstrators shouted, blared horns and rang bells, as Capitol Police tried to keep them off the property.

Graham’s critics have pointed to his words after Senate Republicans refused to move forward on the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland during the last year of former President Obama’s second term. The South Carolina Republican said that if a vacancy arose during the last year of President Trump’s term and the primary process had already started, the seat should not be filled during that year.
The South Carolina Republican now says that he is “dead set on confirming” Trump’s pick, whoever it may be. He has explained his change of heart by pointing to Democrats’ behavior during Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation process when multiple women came forth with allegations of sexual misconduct during his high school and college years. Kavanaugh had previously been investigated by the FBI for past judicial appointments without incident.

Graham, whose committee will have to vote on any nomination before it goes to the full Senate, has also pointed to how it was Democrats who first changed Senate rules to eliminate the filibuster for federal circuit court confirmations.
“Democrats chose to set in motion rules changes to stack the court at the circuit level and they chose to try to destroy Brett Kavanaugh’s life to keep the Supreme Court seat open,” Graham tweeted Sunday. “You reap what you sow.”

Thousands of demonstrators descend on the nation’s capital on Friday to demand an overhaul to the nation’s criminal justice system and push for racial equality at the same site Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. called for those same reforms decades ago in his iconic “I Have A Dream Speech.”
Like the 1963 March on Washington, organizers opened with a series of speeches at the Lincoln Memorial before attendees plan to march through the streets of the city, this time ending at the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial.
This march – dubbed “Get Your Knee Off Our Necks” — comes at a particularly tense time as frustration over police brutality and use of force have sparked national outrage following the Memorial Day killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis.

A common theme throughout the march was a call to action for attendees to register and to vote in the fall elections.
Several of the speakers led the crowds in chants of “No Justice! No Peace!” And repeated the refrain that “Black Lives Matter.” At one point some in the crowd could be overheard saying “hands up, don’t shoot.”
“We are in unprecedented, uncertain times,” Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., told the crowd.
“Yes, it is possible to legislate justice and accountability, people over profits, joy over trauma, freedom over fear. Yes, it is possible to write budgets that actually value black lives,” she said.
Gun control activist and 2018 Parkland, Fla., high school shooting survivor Aalayah Eastmond said gun violence is a scourge on black communities.
“Police violence is gun violence,” Eastmond said. “And gun violence is the leading cause of death for Black youth. We demand to live in peace. We demand to live in spaces where the best of Black culture can thrive.”
The program’s headliners will be civil rights activists Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III.
Later the event will feature family members of Black Americans who have been killed by police or in other racially-charged incidents, including Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Rayshard Brooks and others whose names have become rallying cries during recent national protests demanding their killers be held accountable.
Civil Rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who represents many of the victims’ families, said “the problem isn’t de-escalation, the problem is racism.”
“Certainly as with all these tragedies you want accountability because we can’t get justice,” Crump said Friday on NPR’s Morning Edition.

Racial justice and police reform is a hot-button political issue as election day draws near.
On Thursday as Donald Trump accepted the Republican Party’s nomination for president, he underscored his self-proclaimed moniker as the “law and order president,” while accusing Democratic challenger Joe Biden as someone who repeatedly tears down America. Meanwhile, hundreds of demonstrators gathered just outside on the White House’s South Lawn to decry racism and demand police accountability.
The march also comes on the heels of the shooting of Jacob Blake by police in Kenosha, Wis., on Sunday. Blake, a Black man, was shot seven times in the back at close range. He is now paralyzed from the waist down, according to his family’s lawyers.
That shooting was captured on video and went viral on social media, sparking days of demonstrations that turned deadly this week.
A 17-year-old from Illinois allegedly opened fired on protesters in Kenosha, killing two and injuring a third. The shooter, a white male, reportedly has ties to a militia and is a staunch supporter of law enforcement.
He is facing six criminal charges, including first-degree intentional homicide, in connection to the shooting.
The ongoing coronavirus pandemic also looms over the event.
Due to a requirement imposed by Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser that visitors to the district from high-risk states self-quarantine for 14 days, turnout for the march is expected to be lighter than organizers had originally anticipated.
Event organizers had planned for 100,000 attendees, but a permit issued by the National Park Service indicates about half that are expected, according to The Washington Post.

]]>Protesters filled the streets outside the head of the U.S. Postal Service’s home in Northwest Washington, D.C., on Saturday, some carrying signs that read “Don’t mess with the USPS” and “Don’t stamp out our democracy.”
The demonstrators blew airhorns and banged pots as a few of them walked to the front door of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s building and pinned fake ballots to his front door, as protesters accused him and the White House of working together to undermine main-in ballots and the election.
“Hey hey, Louis DeJoy, the Postal Service is not your toy!” the protesters chanted. It was not known if he was home.
Shutdown D.C., the group that helped organize the protest, said they decided to make a bunch of noise outside DeJoy’s home to provide a “wake up call” to the longtime Republican donor.
“During a global pandemic, the postal service is essential to democracy: Postal workers are literally delivering democracy by safely delivering Americans’ votes,” the group said in a statement. “And Trump appointed DeJoy, a logistics executive, to gut the safest and most accessible way to vote.”
President Trump did not appoint DeJoy, as the postmaster general is selected by the USPS Board of Governors, but the White House did push to have him put in that position.
DeJoy, a Trump ally who has served as postmaster general since May, reshuffled much of the experienced senior leadership in USPS’s organizational chart when he took control of the agency, and he has introduced a number of policy changes that appear to have slowed the delivery of mail.

“He’s trying to streamline the post office and make it great again,” Trump said Saturday as he dismissed questions about whether DeJoy was intentionally trying to delay mail delivery.
Outside of delays for people who depend on the USPS for their mail and packages, critics say the repercussions of DeJoy’s restructuring could have an outsized impact on the election this year.
Many states have allowed voters to turn to mail-in ballots because of the ongoing pandemic. With DeJoy’s closeness to the White House and his decision to ban overtime and additional trips made by carriers to deliver mail on time, protesters said it appeared that DeJoy was trying to help undermine the presidential election in November.
DeJoy has also overseen the decommissioning of 671 of the agency’s letter sorting machines, which can individually sort 35,000 pieces of mail per hour. Another call to action was the USPS’s plan to remove a number of blue collection boxes around the country, but a spokesman said Friday that it would wait until after Election Day and reevaluate its needs.
Concerns, however, grew further on Friday when numerous states reported that they had received letters from the Postal Service in recent days warning them that the agency that oversees mail in the United States will not be able to fulfill requests for mail-in ballots in time for the Nov. 3 election.
NBC News reached out to all 50 states to see whether they had received the USPS letter warning of issues relating to mail-in ballots. Eighteen, including critical swing states like Arizona, Florida and Michigan, shared the letters they received. Vermont, Wisconsin and Kentucky said they did not receive a warning from USPS.
Meanwhile, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., the chairwoman of the House Oversight Committee, attended a rally in support of USPS workers on Saturday in New York City. She railed against President Trump for holding USPS funding hostage amid ongoing negotiations in Congress over pandemic relief because he is trying to undermine mail-in voting.
Trump said on Thursday that holding up the USPS emergency funding would ensure that the federal agency would be unable to “take all of these millions and millions of ballots.”
“Now, if we don’t make a deal, that means they don’t get the money,” he said. “That means they can’t have universal mail-in voting. They just can’t have it.”
“His own postmaster general has come out with a series of proposals that would delay the mail,” Maloney said Saturday. “These changes won’t just disenfranchise voters. It will hurt our seniors, our veterans, others that depend on their medications by mail, their packages, other deliveries. And these delays are also happening across our country.”
Maloney sent DeJoy a 10-page letter along with other Democratic leaders in Congress that asked for more information on the planned changes at hundreds of postal facilities across the country that risk jeopardizing the “integrity of the election.” She also confirmed that the USPS Office of Inspector General would be investigating DeJoy’s policies, as well as whether he violated any federal ethics rules.
DeJoy is slated to speak before Maloney’s committee on Sept. 17. Congress is on recess until September.
The criticism and concern of undermining mail-in voting efforts did not only come from Democrats, however, as Sen. Mitt Romney also emphasized on Saturday that tabulating mailed ballots is essential to preserving American democracy.
“We should make every effort to assure that people who want to vote, get the chance to vote,” he told reporters. “And that’s more important even than the outcome of the vote. We’ve got to preserve the principle of democracy or the trend we’re on is going to continue to get worse.”

]]>Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside an Aurora, Colorado, municipal building Saturday demanding systemic change and justice in the death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man who died last year after police applied a chokehold.
Saturday’s demonstrations organized by the Denver chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation began with a march and rally followed by a youth-led protest and a violin vigil, the Denver Post reported.
One protester, Franklin Williams, 25, said he attended to show support and to make sure the fervor continues beyond Saturday.
“This shouldn’t be a moment,” Williams said. “This should be a movement.”
Police in riot gear broke up the protests hours after they began.

On Friday, three officers involved in McClain’s death were reassigned to non-enforcement duties for their own safety, authorities said. But people at Saturday’s demonstration said the police department needs to do more.
“They should not have jobs at this particular point,” one woman told Nightly News. “Charges need to be brought up against them because it was murder what was done.”
An internal investigation previously found that the police officers had followed protocol when they stopped McClain on Aug. 24.
Police had been responding to a call of a suspicious person wearing a ski mask and waving his arms as he walked down a street. They said McClain refused to stop walking and fought back when officers confronted him and tried to take him into custody. Police used a chokehold to subdue McClain — a tactic recently banned in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis.
In video obtained by NBC News, McClain could be heard telling police “I can’t breathe correctly.”
He suffered cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital after paramedics administered a sedative to calm him down. He was later declared brain dead and taken off life support less than a week later.
Three officers were placed on leave and later returned to the force after District Attorney Dave Young said there was insufficient evidence to charge them.
On Thursday, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis ordered prosecutors to reopen the investigation.
“He deserves justice,” Marna Arnett said. “They murdered my friend and nothing happened. They got to go back to work.”

Attending Sunday’s rally was the family of Layleen Polanco, a black transgender woman who died in Riker’s Island in 2019, according to NBC News. Her family has filed a wrongful death suit against the city, with new video showing that guards waited for more than an hour to get medical assistance after Polanco suffered an epileptic seizure while in custody.
“The video is the last piece of the puzzle,” David Shanies, an attorney for Polanco’s family, told NBC News. “It’s the last bit of indifference to her life that we saw and recklessness to a person who obviously needed help.”
Black transgender Americans face widespread discrimination, according to experts at the National LGBTQ Task Force, and suffer homelessness, harassment and poverty at much higher rates than other transgender Americans or black Americans.
“From education to employment and housing discrimination, from police brutality to health care disparities, Black transgender people are suffering at extremely high rates due to bigotry and transphobia,” said the National Black Justice Coalition’s executive director, Sharon Lettman-Hicks, in a statement.
Sunday’s protest comes following weeks of demonstrations in the city and in others in every U.S. state over the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other black Americans during encounters with the police.

]]>BOULDER, Colo. — The Boulder Police Department (BPD) said officers have not issued citations after photos and videos posted online show large crowds of people congregating at Boulder Creek despite a statewide order barring gatherings over 10 people to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Temperatures on Monday and Tuesday exceeded 90 degrees, bringing crowds to the beaches at Colorado’s state parks and along riverbanks. The photos of Boulder Creek were taken near the University of Colorado Boulder campus.
“We continue a strong educational approach to emphasize wearing masks and social distancing of six feet or more to encourage personal responsibility rather than issue citations,” Boulder Police Department spokesperson Laurie Ogden wrote in a statement to 9NEWS.
The crowds prompted Colorado state parks to close beaches altogether for the foreseeable future. 9NEWS asked Boulder’s parks and recreation department if it had a similar plan in mind, but did not receive a response as of this writing.
Jeff Zayach, Boulder County’s Public Health executive director, released a statement chastising the people seen gathered at the creek.
“I know it’s been difficult, but the video of people clearly gathering along the creek not only shows groups larger than 10 people, but there was also not adequate social distancing,” Zayach wrote. “Situations like these not only violate the state and local public health orders, but they put our whole community, our businesses, and our economy at risk.
“Please remember that it takes up to 14 days before we see who will become sick and spread the disease from this large gathering of people along the creek. Please take this virus seriously and limit gatherings to 10 people or less and remain at least six feet from each other. Individual actions are putting our businesses and our most vulnerable in the community at further risk.”

]]>Hundreds of protesters gathered at state capitals in North Carolina and Missouri to protest stay-at-home orders Tuesday, the latest in a wave of demonstrations against statewide restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
The small protests featured demonstrators — many of them wearing gear promoting President Donald Trump and waving “Don’t Tread on Me” and U.S. flags — who mostly opted against wearing masks and ignored social distancing guidelines that health experts say are necessary to mitigate the transmission of the highly contagious virus.

The protesters decried the stay-at-home orders, which have curtailed businesses and personal freedoms, and pointed to the 22 million Americans who have filed for first-time unemployment insurance over the past month. Health experts and many governors have cautioned against easing restrictions too soon given how easily the virus spreads, as well as limits on testing and treatment.
Although the protests have generated considerable media attention, polling indicates that they represent the views of a small minority of Americans. A Gallup poll conducted this month found that just 20 percent of Americans would like to see an immediate return to normal, while 71 percent prefer to wait and see how the outbreak develops.
In North Carolina, where one of Tuesday’s protests took place, a poll by the conservative Civitas Institute found last week that 84 percent of respondents approved of Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s handling of the outbreak.
Trump has expressed support for the protesters, tweeting about the need to “LIBERATE” three of the states with strict stay-at-home orders. But even the White House’s own guidelines to reopen the country stress the need for a cautious and calculated return to normalcy.
“These are people expressing their views,” he told reporters last week. “I see where they are, and I see the way they’re working. They seem to be very responsible people to me.”

In a conference call with Vice President Mike Pence on Monday, Cooper and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer asked Pence whether the administration could make clear the importance of staying home and following the orders that are in place, as ABC News first reported and Whitmer confirmed during her news conference Monday. Pence said the administration would reiterate the point.
