The parents of a Wisconsin man fatally shot during protests against police brutality in Kenosha say their son was a hero and expressed disappointment in President Donald Trump and others for allegedly suggesting he “deserved to die.”

Anthony Huber, 26, was one of two men allegedly shot dead by a 17-year-old last month during a protest over the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

State prosecutors have charged 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse of Antioch, Illinois, with murder in the deaths of Huber and Joseph Rosenbaum. A third man, Gaige P. Grosskreutz, was also wounded in the attack.

Rittenhouse’s lawyer, Pierce Bainbridge, said his client was acting in self-defense when he opened fire with a Smith & Wesson AR-15 style .223 rifle.

“Kyle did nothing wrong,” he said in a statement last month. “He exercised his God-given, Constitutional, common law and statutory law right to self-defense.”

Huber’s parents, John Huber and Karen Bloom, said in a statement released through their lawyers Friday that their son has been maligned by some, including the president.

“We are deeply disappointed that the president, members of the media and others have said that Anthony deserved to die for attempting to protect others from a person who had just killed someone,” they said.

The president, at an Aug. 31 briefing, that Rittenhouse “was trying to get away from them, I guess; it looks like. And he fell, and then they very violently attacked him.”

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

Huber’s parents said “there was absolutely no justification for Anthony’s murder.”

He was a hero trying to protect others when he was gunned down, they said.

“He sacrificed his own life to protect innocent civilians who were out that night protesting the shooting of Jacob Blake,” they said. “Without his incredible bravery, many others could have been killed or injured.”

Rittenhouse faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless homicide and attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

He is also facing two charges of reckless endangerment, which are also felony counts, and a misdemeanor count of possession of a dangerous weapon under the age of 18.

Prosecutors have said that minutes before midnight, Rittenhouse was being followed and “engaged” by Rosenbaum, a demonstrator, who Rittenhouse allegedly shot before fleeing. Rittenhouse was then confronted nearby by protesters, including Huber, prosecutors said.

The criminal complaint against Rittenhouse gave this account:

“Huber has a skateboard in his right hand. When Huber reaches the defendant it appears that he is reaching for the defendant’s gun with his left hand as the skateboard makes contact with the defendant’s left shoulder. Huber appears to be trying to pull the gun away from the defendant. The defendant rolls towards his left side and as Huber appears to be trying to grab the gun the gun is pointed at Huber’s body. The defendant then fires one round which can be heard on the video. Huber staggers away, taking several steps, then collapses to the ground. Huber subsequently died from this gunshot wound.”

Bainbridge said that someone “bashed” Rittenhouse “over the head with a skateboard” and that Rittenhouse was facing protesters who were trying to disarm him when he opened fire.

“In fear for his life and concerned the crowd would either continue to shoot at him or even use his own weapon against him, Kyle had no choice but to fire multiple rounds towards his immediate attackers, striking two, including one armed attacker,” he said.

Prosecutors said Grosskreutz appeared to have a gun when he approached Rittenhouse. But, they said, Grosskreutz had “his hands in the air” by the time Rittenhouse allegedly fired.

A medical examiner said gunfire to Huber’s chest perforated his heart, aorta, pulmonary artery and right lung.

The New York Times analyzed video from that night that showed police expressing appreciation and offering water to Rittenhouse and other armed men at the demonstration. This took place about 20 minutes after the teen allegedly opened fire, according to the publication.

“It has been disturbing to see videos and other information that has come to light suggesting that local police may have permitted and even encouraged armed vigilantes, including Anthony’s killer, to patrol the streets of Kenosha and threaten civilians with firearms,” Huber’s parents said.

“In America, we celebrate heroes like Anthony who sacrifice for their communities, not armed vigilantes who cause death and chaos in the streets.”

Many are mourning the loss of Henderson County, N.C., officer and Marine veteran Ryan Hendrix, who died after being shot in the face while trying to arrest a suspect from Virginia.

Hendrix, 35, and two other officers were responding to a 911 call about a break-in, which escalated into a shooting between a Mountain Home resident and the armed suspect.

“God bless the family of Marine veteran and Henderson County Deputy Ryan Hendrix, who was shot and killed in the line of duty,” North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis wrote on Twitter. “Susan and I are praying for him, his family, and his fellow Henderson County deputies.”

“Say his name: Ryan Hendrix,” Jeff Giesa, of Right Wing Watch, wrote on Twitter, borrowing the popular phrase used by Black Lives Matter protesters to call to mind those killed in police encounters. “35 years old. God bless the two kids and fiancée be leaves behind,” he added.

“It is with a very heavy heart the family of Henderson County Deputy Ryan Hendrix and Sheriff Lowell Griffin announce Ryan’s passing,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a Thursday Facebook post. “Early this morning while the world slept, Ryan responded to assist a family needing help when they became innocent victims of a violent encounter.”

The post added that, “Ryan’s family wants everyone to know that ‘Ryan was doing the job he was born to do and he died doing the job he loved.'”

Hendrix left behind two children, a 6-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter, and a fiancée whom he was set to marry in October. He served the Henderson County Sherrif’s Office for eight years.

Henderson County deputies arrived at the scene after 2 a.m. and found the suspect in his car. The suspect “initially appeared to comply with lawful orders to show the deputies his hands…but in one rapid movement, he retrieved the gun, firing one round, striking [Hendrix] in the face and critically wounding him,” Sheriff Lowell Griffin said during a Thursday press conference.

The two other deputies with Hendrix returned fire and killed Robert Ray Doss Jr., a “career criminal with arrests in Georgia, South Carolina, Maryland and Virginia.”

He had a record involving offenses for drugs, multiple arson crimes and felony thefts, Griffin said. The case remains under investigation.

Hendrix was “an exemplary officer who was also a member of the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, serves as a field training officer, and assists in many otleaher capacities,” Griffin said.

Hendrix was an organ donor who will “continue to help strangers for a lifetime, even after making the ultimate sacrifice,” according to the Facebook post.

The sheriff’s office, in partnership with the North Carolina Police Benevolent Foundation, created a fundraising page for Hendrix’s family; 100 percent of the proceeds will go to his family.

Those wishing to pay respects can attend a community memorial service from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the sheriff’s office. Organizers say the event will be outside.

The family of a 29-year-old Black man fatally shot by deputies during a traffic stop over a bicycle code violation on Monday has demanded accountability and justice amid a fresh wave of protests.

Family members say Dijon Kizzee was fatally shot by Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department deputies after they attempted to stop him while he was riding a bicycle in violation of vehicle codes. Almost immediately after the incident, hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets in outrage, chanting for justice as they marched to the South L.A. Sheriff’s Station on Imperial Highway.

“Right now I’m sad and I’m mad at the same time” Fletcher Fair, Kizzee’s aunt, told reporters on Tuesday. “Why us? We are tired. We are absolutely tired.”

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said that when the deputies tried to stop the man, he dropped the bike and ran—prompting a foot pursuit and a physical altercation. During the scuffle, the man allegedly dropped a bunch of clothes that were in his hand. Deputies said they spotted a black handgun and, at the same time, opened fire, hitting him several times.

“Our suspect was holding some items of clothing in his hands, punched one of the officers in the face and then dropped the items in his hands,” Sheriff’s Lt. Brandon Dean said Monday evening. “The deputies noticed that inside the clothing items that he dropped was a black semiautomatic handgun, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred.”

It was not immediately clear what vehicle code Kizzee had violated while riding his bike.

Video of the incident shows a man running from deputies with what appeared to be a ball of clothing in his hands. The video then jumps to two deputies on the sidewalk with their guns drawn, while a man is on the ground. Another portion of a witness video, posted by Fox 11, shows the man’s body on the ground behind a pickup truck as angry bystanders yell at deputies. At one point in the video, other deputies arrive at the scene and at least one appears to be leaning over the man and putting handcuffs on him.

“How you gonna handcuff a dead man?” somebody is heard yelling on the video, though it is not immediately clear if the man is deceased.

Authorities said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and a handgun was recovered.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Kizzee’s relatives and community activists confirmed the 29-year-old was carrying weapon—but said he wasn’t wielding it at the deputies, nor did he reach for it from the ground when he was shot. They said he was therefore unarmed when he was killed.

Anthony Johnson, the 29-year-old’s uncle, told reporters on Tuesday that residents had to clean his nephew’s blood off the sidewalk.

“They shot him. They killed him. The least they could have done was clean up after themselves,” Johnson said.

Ahmira Irene Roberson, a 22-year-old neighbor, told The Daily Beast that the Monday afternoon incident was “extremely traumatic” for a community that is used to heavy police presence.

“Because of the neighborhood it’s common for helicopters to hover for maybe an hour, but the constant hovering was scary. People were out in their yards or on their porches talking about what happened,” she said. “Some neighbors were crying, others were just upset.”

She said she believes Monday’s incident “will make things a lot worse.”

Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva offered his condolences to Kizzee’s family and revealed that the 29-year-old was related to a department employee.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, and that includes a member of my own department who is a cousin of the deceased,” Villanueva said while speaking at a Board of Supervisors’ meeting on Tuesday.

The incident comes as intense protests continue in Kenosha, Wisconsin, over the shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake, who was shot in the back seven times at close range on August 23 as he tried to get into a van with his kids.

According to CBS-Los Angeles, while there were some reports of vandalism during the overnight march in Los Angeles, there were no arrests. In videos of the protest posted on social media, hundreds of residents are seen chanting “no justice, no peace” and “say his name” in the neighborhood where the Kizzee was shot before they were met by deputies in riot gear. After several hours, the crowd moved to the South L.A. Sheriff’s Station.

“The police kill another Black man, another Black person, we’re tired of the injustice, we’re tired of the police brutality, we’re tired of being looked upon as fourth-class citizens, we’re tired of just not being treated equally,” Raheem Taylor, a protester, told CBS-Los Angeles.

Melina Abdullah, co-founder of the L.A. chapter of the Black Lives Matter movement, told the crowd: “They stole his life, they’re going to assassinate his character, and they’re going to try to criminalize this community.”

The Sheriff’s Department confirmed to The Daily Beast that multiple independent investigations were underway in accordance with protocol for deputy-involved shootings.

Unlike the Los Angeles Police Department, sheriff’s deputies are not required to wear body-worn cameras. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is set to vote Tuesday on whether to fund a body-worn camera program for the department.

“We still have to conduct our interviews of the investigating officers to see exactly what happened and transpired during the deputy-involved-shooting,” Dean said during a press conference. “But if this individual was reaching for a semi-automatic handgun, I would suggest that—you know—that’s probably why deadly force was important.

Kizzee did not have any children and is survived by his younger brother, who just graduated from high school, family members said.

The Trump administration says that it’s running family detention facilities at just 7% capacity during the coronavirus pandemic as it tries to prevent an outbreak.

No illegal immigrant has contracted the coronavirus in the federal government’s three family detention centers, but five new arrivals have tested positive for COVID-19, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

That included three adults and two juveniles. Only one of them showed symptoms, ICE reported in filings to a federal court late Monday.

The data comes as the administration battles in the courts with immigrant-rights activists, who have demanded a large-scale release of families, citing the pandemic.

ICE says it’s released some illegal immigrant families and is detaining others at a slower pace, which has helped keep the population down at the three family detention centers. The Berks facility in Pennsylvania is working at 20% capacity; the Karnes facility in Texas is at 9% capacity; and the South Texas Family Residential Center, by far the largest with 2,400 beds, has just 142 people, or just 6% of capacity.

But the agency has rebuffed calls to empty the facilities altogether.

U.S. District Judge Dolly M. Gee, an Obama appointee in the Central District of California, has been pushing ICE for releases, and ordered the agency to try to work out a process with the families and their lawyers.

But ICE appealed her ruling this week.

The agency says Judge Gee’s framework creates a tricky situation. If parents don’t agree to release their children to foster families, then ICE says it would either have to release the family as a whole — creating a perverse incentive for parents to bring children as a way to get out of detention — or else release the children without parents, and risk being accused of family separations.

The administration is still reeling from the fallout of family separations in 2018, during the zero-tolerance border policy.

Under a previous order by Judge Gee, ICE can generally hold children who came across the border with parents for up to about 20 days before they must be released, either into the community or to the federal Health and Human Services Department.

Juveniles who arrived without parents — so-called Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) — must be quickly transferred within three days to HHS, which runs shelters that house the children while foster families are sought.

According to court filings this week, those HHS facilities have cut their population from more than 3,500 in mid-March to fewer than 1,000 as of the middle of August, and are running at just 6% of capacity.

The shelters serve as schools, clinics and entertainment for the children they house.

As of Aug. 22, nine children in the shelter system tested positive for COVID-19. Most of those came into the system with the disease, HHS’ juvenile coordinator reported to Judge Gee.

Even in coronavirus quarantine, those children still get the same level of services.

The coordinator described the situation at one shelter: “The room is equipped with a twin-size bed with colorful linens, a private in-room bathroom and child friendly artwork and decor. Each minor is able to draw with chalk, hang drawings and personalize their bedroom. Also, each child is provided a deck of playing cards, a journal to write in, a sketchpad and a stress ball. Additionally, at their request, minors are provided with yarn for arts and crafts, materials to make key chains, puzzles, and coloring books with colored pencils.

“Religious material and an approved playlist of music is also offered if they choose. Depending on the interests of the minor, the shelter can also provide literature, dolls or other types of materials for arts and crafts (e.g. aluminum etching, beads for bracelets, threading, etc.). Additionally, the minors are offered approved options to watch movies, shows or videos at scheduled times. The shelter has a subscription to Disney Plus and can access shows in Spanish.”

Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez on Tuesday defended his party’s mostly virtual convention this week by invoking Herman Cain, the 2012 GOP presidential candidate who died last month after contracting COVID-19.

“Tulsa, Oklahoma — was that a good model for how people should conduct themselves? Ask the family of Herman Cain,” Mr. Perez said at a Politico event.

Cain attended the president’s June 20 rally in Tulsa and had been undergoing oxygen treatment after he was hospitalized for the coronavirus in early July.

President Trump said he didn’t think Cain, who was 74, caught the virus from his rally.

Mr. Perez and Democratic National Convention CEO Joe Solmonese had been asked about the travel schedule of Mr. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence this week, which includes in-person stops in Wisconsin.

An in-person Democratic convention was originally slated to take place in Milwaukee before the coronavirus pandemic upended those plans.

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden is steering clear and will deliver his convention acceptance speech from Delaware on Thursday.

“I often say that Donald Trump needs the roar of a crowd to remind him that he’s in charge and we’re working for a guy who was born to be in charge and I think that that’s what we’re seeing this week,” Mr. Solmonese said.

He said Mr. Trump is pulling a “political stunt” by showing up in person and attracting crowds.

“We’re going to continue to have a thoughtful and impactful conversation with the American people and one that I think last night demonstrated is off to a great start,” Mr. Solmonese said.

Fourteen members of the same family in Texas tested positive for the coronavirus following a small gathering in June, the family says. One of them has died and another is on life support.

Tony Green, who lives in Dallas, said that after months of social distancing, he and his partner hosted a party for their parents on June 13. Green and his partner are not married but have been together nearly 9 years and he said he considers his partner’s family as his in-laws.

He and his partner did not wear masks at the gathering, nor did their parents.

“We just felt the worst was behind the country because everything was easy, things were reopening and none of us were experiencing any symptoms,” Green said.

The next day, Green said, he woke up feeling sick. By June 15, his partner and parents, all of whose names he declined to provide, were all sick.

Rafael Ceja.via Tony Green

Green, 43, told NBC News in a phone interview Monday that he has chronicled the episode in a GoFundMe that he launched to cover the medical expenses for his partner’s father, Rafael Ceja, who has pneumonia and is on life support after testing positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Green said his partner’s parents traveled from their home in Dallas to Austin on June 15 for the birth of their first grandchild. Ceja’s mother and one of his partner’s sisters also joined them for the visit.

“That night in Austin, my father-in-law became ill,” Green said.

Then his mother-in-law and sister-in-law began feeling ill. Although his wife’s parents and his sister-in-law quickly left Austin, the parents of the newborn also got sick and tested positive for the coronavirus, Green said.

The newborn was spared, he said.

Between June 17 and 23, his father-in-law’s mother became ill.

“The pain and trauma that was yet to come is more than anybody could have prepared for,” Green wrote on GoFundMe.

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

Green said he and his father-in-law were both admitted to the hospital June 24.

The virus attacked his central nervous system, Green said, and he nearly had a stroke. He spent a few days in the hospital. Sometime in late June, his father-in-law’s mother was admitted to the same hospital as her son.

She died of COVID-19 and pneumonia July 2 in a room next door to her son, Green said. Ceja was unaware his mother was in a room next to his.

Later that day, Ceja learned his mother had passed away without any family by her side. “Not only would Rafael miss her funeral, he didn’t even get to say goodbye or see her one last time,” Green wrote on GoFundMe.

Green said his mother-in-law, Marisa, called him “crying and screaming in terror” July 12 to inform him Ceja was on life support.

Two days later, a funeral was held for Ceja’s mother. Only 10 family members could attend.

Narrowing the guest count was made possible with the continuing bad news: Two of Ceja’s sisters, one of his nephews and a brother-in-law had all contracted the virus bringing the total number of infected family members to 14, Green said.

Twelve family members have either recovered or are in various stages of recovery, Green said Monday.

He said he has had a front-row seat to his mother-in-law and father-in-law’s suffering.

“I cannot help but feel responsible for convincing our families it was safe to have a get-together,” he said.

The guilt he feels is overwhelming.

“There’s a lot of things that I would have done differently,” he said.

Green said he decided to publicly document his family’s diagnoses because he knows many people in the Dallas area who are unconvinced the virus can be deadly and of the importance of social distancing. The decision has divided his family, he said.

“I just don’t think that people are really paying enough attention to the safety protocols and to the things they can do to protect themselves a little better,” he said Monday.

Green said that he is uncertain whether staying at least 6 feet from other people who are not from your household in both indoor and outdoor spaces is effective in reducing the spread of the virus, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said.

“I just didn’t see that six feet apart makes a difference because of the distance germs can travel,” he said. “I’m still not 100 percent sure that it does.”

Still, he said, he believes people need to be more vigilant about wearing masks. There is increasing evidence that face coverings help prevent people who have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others, according to the CDC.

On July 2, Gov. Greg Abbott changed course and made it mandatory to wear masks in public in any county with 20 or more cases of the coronavirus.

“Wearing a face covering in public is proven to be one of the most effective ways we have to slow the spread of COVID-19,” Abbott said in a statement announcing his executive order.

After cases related to bars began to spike, Abbott ordered them closed June 26.

Green said he has friends in Dallas who do not think that the virus is significant enough to alter their way of life.

“I don’t think they’re going to change their opinions unless it bites them in the butt like it did me,” he said.

DALLAS — A Texas family who spent months apart had a backyard barbecue and found out days later 14 attendees had contracted the coronavirus.

No one felt sick at the time of the family get-together in mid-June, KDFI reported

Since then, one woman has died and another family member is on a ventilator.

“Everyone has reassured me that it’s not my fault, but it’s my home,” Tony Green said. “I feel like I’m the host, and even though we don’t know who had what, it spread because I had this idea to get together. I’m having a difficult time with that.”

Green learned he had the virus after a visit to the emergency room. That same day, Green’s father-in-law, Rafael Ceja, was taken to the hospital. Ceja developed pneumonia and has been on a ventilator 11 days, KDFI reported. Ceja’s 68-year-old mother was later admitted to the hospital, where she later died from the virus.

Green regrets not wearing a mask at the barbecue.

“I feel very badly for the way that I reacted and thought of people for being so concerned about this,” Green said.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said he and his family have faced “serious threats” since he joined the White House coronavirus task force as the nation’s top infectious diseases expert, according to a report.

Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN’s David Axelrod on his “The Axe Files” podcast Thursday that the level of anger was on a different level than when he took on the HIV/AIDS crisis decades ago, The Hill reported.

“I’ve seen a side of society that I guess is understandable but it’s a little bit disturbing,” he said.

“Back in the days of HIV when I was being criticized with some hate mail, it was, you know, people calling me a gay-lover and ‘what the hell are you wasting a lot of time on that’ … things that you would just push aside as stupid people saying stupid things,” Fauci said.

But “it’s really a magnitude different” now, he said, because “as much as people inappropriately, I think, make me somewhat of a hero … there are people who get really angry at thinking I’m interfering with their life because I’m pushing a public-health agenda.”

This has led to both hate mail and “serious threats against me, against my family … my daughters, my wife — I mean, really? Is this the United States of America?”

He said he also has been assigned a security detail as a result of the threats, the outlet reported.

President Trump recently said in a Fox News interview with Chris Wallace that Fauci is a “little bit of an alarmist.” The doctor later said he prefers to think of himself as “a realist.”

The doctor said that the anger has appeared on a different level than when he began his work during the HIV/AIDS crisis.

“I’ve seen a side of society that I guess is understandable but it’s a little bit disturbing. In 2020, Fauci said, “It’s really a magnitude different,” because “as much as people inappropriately, I think, make me somewhat of a hero … there are people who get really angry at thinking I’m interfering with their life because I’m pushing a public health agenda.”

This, he said, has led to both hate mail and “serious threats against me, against my family … my daughters, my wife — I mean, really? Is this the United States of America?”

Fauci added that he had been assigned security due to some of these threats.

Axelrod also noted reports that several House Republicans had called for Rep. “Isn’t that weird, David? I mean, it just doesn’t make any sense,” Fauci responded. “I guess it’s just a reflection of the divisiveness in our society at the political level.”

“I can understand very well that you have to be careful because of the negative consequences of things like shutting down … but the hostility against public health issues is difficult not only to understand, but difficult to even process,” he added.

Trump maintains that his relationship with the doctor, however, remains “very good.”
