Leading health agencies have issued slightly differing advice about wearing a face mask during exercise. The CDC recommends that face masks or coverings are worn in public when around other people to help slow the spread of coronavirus, while the World Health Organization has stated that mask-wearing while working out can force sweat to accumulate and that might make it harder to breathe. (Here’s some advice on how to wear masks comfortably).

Infectious disease expert Dr. Sandra Kesh told CNET that you should avoid going to group workouts or exercise classes for the time being and try to maintain physical distancing. And keep in mind, even if you’re social distancing at a gym, having many people inside and lots of heavy (unmasked) breathing creates an environment where the virus might spread more easily.

For your safety and the safety of others, you shouldn’t exercise without a mask indoors around other people you don’t know. If you really cannot stand wearing a mask, take your exercise outside.

For those who are really eager to go back to their gyms and fitness studios, where masks might be required or not, here are a few masks that are breathable, moisture-wicking and designed for working out.

Under Armour

Under Armour designed the UA Sportsmask with athletes in mind, but any avid exerciser will find the mask useful if you’re looking to upgrade from a standard cloth face mask. The mask is made with three different layers designed to allow airflow while also protecting you.

One layer of the mask has an antimicrobial treatment called “PROTX2” which the brand says, “has been shown in laboratory tests to destroy the coronavirus, and is being reviewed by the US Environmental Protection Agency to confirm the efficacy of the substance as it is applied to the UA Sportsmask.”

The Well

The Well Movement cloth mask is 50% cotton, so it may not hold up during heavy exercise and serious sweat sessions, but for most activities, it will perform better than a 100% cotton mask since it’s also made of sweat-friendly polyester and spandex. The mask contains antimicrobial properties to help prevent bacteria growth.

The ear loops are adjustable, which is a huge plus for fit and comfort. The fabric also provides some UV protection, which is great if you’re spending a lot of time walking or exercising outside — but don’t forget to wear sunscreen too.

Carbon38

Carbon38 The Mask Kit comes with two masks, plus a laundry bag for washing. The masks are made with a blend of polyester and cotton, so they’re fast-drying and help you stay cool. The ear loops are adjustable for a snug fit, and the masks come in two sizes.

Carbon38 says the masks are made with a multilayer filtration system to help protect you, plus the fabric has antibacterial properties.

Adidas

Adidas face masks are machine washable and made with soft, breathable material that’s a blend of recycled polyester and elastane. This breathable face mask comes in two different sizes for the best fit, and Adidas provides guidelines on how to measure your face to make sure you get the right size.

Onzie

Working out in yoga clothing is way more comfortable than regular clothes, so why not take the same approach to your face mask? Yoga and athletic wear brand Onzie uses upcycled yoga fabrics to create face masks that are stretchy and dry quickly — just like your favorite leggings.

Just a heads up: Because the brand is reusing fabric from yoga wear, you can’t choose specific colors and patterns, but it’s definitely worth it for a more sustainable mask option.

Koral

Koral uses the same antimicrobial performance fabric to make its face masks as its activewear, which means they’re stretchy and fast-drying. It also provides UV protection. After wearing this mask out on a jog or walk, you can toss it in the wash, since this reusable mask is machine-wash friendly.

What to look for in face masks for exercise

Fabric

Fabric is one of the most important factors when it comes to exercising with a mask. For everyday activities, cloth masks are fine. But with exercise, cotton becomes damp really fast, which can make it harder to breathe and can promote bacterial growth. So for this reason, masks made with a breathable fabric similar to the kind used in activewear (like spandex or polyester) are your best bet. But still, you want the mask to be breathable and comfortable while you move.

Fit

There’s nothing worse than having a face mask sag or fall off while you’re moving. First, it’s just annoying. Second, it will disrupt your workout if you have to stop to fix it and you’ll likely have to touch your face — which you should avoid doing to stay safe.

Look for a face mask that’s adjustable or comes in different sizes so you can find the best fit for you. Stretchy ear loops or elastic tends to fit snugly and won’t slide around as much as the masks that tie around your head.

Antimicrobial features

Since sweat and moisture can be a breeding ground for bacteria, masks that have some type of filter or antimicrobial coating are ideal for physical activity. (Many of the masks on this list do have these features.) While these may not actually kill or destroy a virus particle, it doesn’t hurt to have these extra barriers in place.

Also, understand that no mask on this list can offer a 100% guarantee that it will protect you from the virus, no matter how many fancy features they have. But wearing a mask is simply another tool that can act as an extra barrier to help stop the spread and help protect you and others.

My name is Eileen Davidson, and I am 34 years old. I live in Vancouver, British Columbia, and I am a full-time single mom, freelance writer, and rheumatoid arthritis patient advocate.

Before I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), I was told my wrist and hand pain was due to carpal tunnel syndrome caused by my physical job as an esthetician. But when I went on maternity leave at age 26, my symptoms never got better. They only increased, and others manifested.

After the birth of my son, it got worse. I struggled to hold him without my joints feeling like they were on fire. And that feeling was no longer just in my hands and wrists, but also my knees, ankles, feet, neck, and back. I also had unrelenting fatigue that I couldn’t shake, no matter how much rest I got or caffeine I drank.

Here I am in Richmond, BC, with my son in 2013. This was two years before my RA diagnosis. At the time, I was in pain and struggling with my self confidence in my abilities and appearance.

I returned to work after a year of maternity leave, but I only lasted 12 months.

My aunt had RA, so I was familiar with the signs. She was ultimately confined to a wheelchair, and she also struggled with diabetes. I was terrified this might be my fate, so at age 29, I requested an RA blood test from my family physician who referred me to a rheumatologist to go over the lab work and my diagnosis. Lo and behold, my blood work came back positive for seropositive rheumatoid arthritis. (Seropositive means there are antibodies in my blood to mark the disease.) Finally I had a definite answer and a diagnosis for my pain.

My life changed drastically after that. I was placed on disability, and everyday activities like grocery shopping, laundry, and showering became painful and exhausting. I gained weight and sank into a deep depression. I went through many different medications to treat both my rheumatoid arthritis and depression—over a dozen in the first few years—until we found drugs that worked.

But finding the right medication wasn’t enough. I knew I also needed to make some major lifestyle changes.

So, I educated myself about how to take care of myself and treat my disease. I quickly learned being active and shedding the extra weight I had been carrying would help me move forward in my journey with rheumatoid arthritis.

I started with my diet. What I eat has a significant impact on how I feel, and I wanted to pinpoint which foods made me sluggish and bloated. Through trial and error, I found that these were highly processed foods or foods high in sugar. Eating more fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, and choosing wholesome starches (like brown rice or bean pasta, for example) over refined carbs, left me feeling so much better. Plus, they helped the weight start to come off.

I now follow the 80/20 rule.

This means that 80 percent of the time I eat healthily, and 20 percent of the time I eat whatever I want. I also implemented elements of the Mediterranean Diet into my 80/20 style eating because research shows it can benefit inflammatory diseases like RA. I go through a lot of hummus, chickpeas, feta cheese, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, tomatoes, garlic, oregano and lemons in a week.

Living with the very debilitating symptom of fatigue, I stick to simple recipes. I purchase precut vegetables, always keep frozen vegetables on hand and do a lot of pre-making and batch prepping so I’m not devoting too much energy to cooking each day. Sometimes I make dinner at lunchtime because the pain and fatigue tend to ramp up in the evening.

I am obsessed with getting as many greens as possible. Sautéed kale and spinach is an easy way to get a ton in! I used peanut butter and Braggs Liquid Aminos to make them less boring.

Eileen Davidson

Here’s a typical day in my diet:

  • Breakfast: Smoothie with raspberries, blueberries, lemon juice, almond milk, spinach, banana, hemp hearts, chia and ground flax seeds with Vega protein powder, alongside some low sugar oatmeal with a touch of cinnamon. I will often freeze a week’s worth of smoothies to make each day easier.
  • Lunch: Often leftovers from dinner the night before.
  • Snacks: Dark chocolate, Greek yogurt, nuts and seeds, fresh fruits and veggies with hummus or dip.
  • Dinner: A lean protein such as chicken, fish, beans or tofu (pictured above), with whole grains, lots of fresh veggies and salad.
  • Dessert: Whatever I want. It’s about balance and portion size. Fresh fruit will often satisfy my sweet tooth.

As I started to adjust my diet, I explored exercise.

I focused on low impact fitness that would get my heart rate up and give me a good sweat. Going for walks or using the elliptical are my favorite cardio workouts because they cause the least amount of pain. I started small with frequent breaks and increased my time and intensity as I got stronger over the years. This got much easier after my doctor and I found the right biologic to help control my inflammation. It was a trial and error process of seeing which exercises my joints could do, and I consulted with a physical therapist to figure out what works best for me.

Rheumatoid arthritis admittedly makes me nervous to exercise in front of others. My balance sucks. I need rest. I sometimes feel weak and sluggish, but in the end, it’s worth it. I love how exercise makes me feel.

    Eileen Davidson

Now, three to four times a week I focus on strength training to improve my posture and muscle strength. And five to six times a week I will do a brisk walk or elliptical session. I have learned it is a lot easier to strength train before my cardio to prevent fatigue, and it is also easier on my joints.

Overall, I became more active. Living with rheumatoid arthritis, I quickly learned movement is my friend, and I can prevent pain and increase my energy by starting my day with movement!

I have lost a total of about 60 pounds, and I went from a size large/XL to a size small.

eileen weight loss before and after

Over the past three years, I’ve gained a ton of confidence. I’ve also lost 60 pounds, improved my strength, and reduced my pain and inflammation levels.

    Eileen Davidson

But the physical difference in how I feel is even greater to me. I don’t have a “goal weight”. I am just taking steps to live a healthier, more fulfilling life with rheumatoid arthritis. Excess weight put more strain on my joints, so losing weight helped decrease my pain and improved my energy levels. Sleep became easier and I needed fewer naps, which significantly helped with my depression.

I am much happier now. Today, I can handle flights of stairs and grocery shopping—I even rack up 22,000 steps on some days. I still have bad days, but they are few, and I can always rely on moving my body to ease some symptoms. It is a process, but I have learned to move at my own arthritic speed.

Jenny Solpietro had been doing well with her exercise routine, getting out for regular runs and practicing martial arts on a consistent basis. She’d been eating well and tracking her calories, too, feeling good after what had been a tough couple of years because of injury and job stress. Then the coronavirus pandemic hit.

“I have anxiety and it brings out self-destructive behaviors, like self-medicating with food and making excuses not to exercise,” the 39-year old software engineer from Columbia, Md., says. “Social media doesn’t help, either — I see pictures and videos of people doing at-home workouts or talking about how much they miss the gym, and I feel even more inadequate.”

With all the bad news, Solpietro has found her main fitness effort now is “burrowing into the couch.”

Ryan McGrath, a 38-year old competitive runner and triathlete from Baltimore, is encountering a similar lack of motivation right now.

“I stayed in shape for most of winter, but was starting to gear up for spring and summer races,” he says. “When they all started canceling, I just lost my desire to train.”

Like Solpietro, McGrath has found he’s having a hard time following good dietary habits that can be important for a competitive athlete.

“Right now, I’m eating fast food like fried chicken sandwiches, cheesesteaks and burritos several days a week,” he says. “I’m not overly concerned with weight gain, but I hate feeling sluggish like I do right now.”

Solpietro and McGrath are not alone in finding themselves unmoored when it comes to their health routines in the middle of a pandemic.

Darrell Gough, a National Academy of Sports Medicine-certified personal trainer, says that many people struggle with motivation when they feel isolated. In normal times, he says, “I lead a big boot camp class and I’m seeing lots of those members now miss the group dynamic. I’m trying to use Zoom and social media to help them stay connected and inspired to keep going.” But for many people, that is hard.

If you lose your exercise mojo, how quickly will fitness disappear? And how long will it take to regain it?

    Losing it

The old exerciser adage, “If you don’t use it, you lose it,” is fact-based and certainly applies now, trainers say.

“Early studies on deconditioning used bed rest as the marker for inactivity,” says Tony Boutagy, an Australian exercise physiologist, and owner of the Boutagy Fitness Institute. “More recent studies have used reduced step count. Both types of research are valid in places where a lockdown is in place.”

Deconditioning effects extended to both the cardiovascular system and musculoskeletal system. For instance, a small study of male subjects on bed rest found that in as little as 10 days of muscle disuse, subjects experienced lean tissue loss and lower VO2 max — which is the measure of oxygen a person is able to use during intense exercise. This number rises and lowers depending on fitness level.

Additional research found that after eight weeks of detraining, recreational marathon runners saw a decline in measured treadmill performance, and a reduction in the size of heart muscle.

Research on steps reduction, Boutagy says, suggests a two-week time frame for lost health, with both a diminished VO2 max “and half a kilogram [just over a pound] of muscle mass loss.”

Solpietro says that was what she found after halting her routine entirely duringthe first weeks of the pandemic’s spread to Maryland.

“It didn’t take long to feel the effects,” she says. “Within a week, I felt bloated and run down, and my jeans were tighter.”

Robert Mazzeo, associate chair of integrative physiology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, says cardiovascular health is heavily tied to muscle mitochondria — often dubbed the powerhouse of a cell, for its role in converting nutrients into energy — “mitochondria turn over quickly, so you will lose this area of fitness before you lose muscular strength, which turns over more slowly,” he says. “But much of the loss and return to fitness is relative, and tied to your level of fitness prior to detraining.”

    Regaining it

What is well established, Boutagy says, is that returning to fitness takes longer than losing it, and this is especially true for older people. “One week of bed rest in the elderly can take six months of training to return to their pre-rest levels,” he says. “Previous exercisers, however, will have a faster return to fitness levels after inactivity.”

A 2000 study from Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise journal found that during a six-month detraining period, young people (ages 20 to 30) experienced an 8 percent decline in their one-repetition maximum weightlifting, while older people (65 to 75) lost 14 percent of strength.

Mazzeo says that there’s room for variability in all of this because of individual training and fitness levels before detraining. “It may take an older person longer to return to fitness, but they can get back to their former level if they are as dedicated to training as before,” he says.

McGrath, who has been a runner most of his life, is convinced that high conditioning and training will stand him in good stead even with the pandemic limiting his exercise on good days to about half of what he normally does.

“I know that if I needed to, I could go out and ride my bike 100 miles this weekend,” he says, “and that within a few weeks, I’d be able to pull my fitness back.”

People can reclaim their fitness when stay-at-home efforts end, but “getting out for a brisk walk a couple of times a week [now] can help offset some of the loss,” Gough says. “Find an accountability buddy and check in with each other to help stay connected and motivated.”

Mazzeo concurs, and points to the many benefits of walking.

“You don’t have to be working out at an intense level to maintain basic health,” he says. “Moderate activity is great right now.”

A preventative medicine study is claiming, according to reports, the best way to prevent coronavirus complications from worsening is regular exercise.

CORONAVIRUS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Zhen Yan, the director of the Center for Skeletal Muscle Research at University of Virginia School of Medicine’s Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center, recommends 30 minutes of cardiovascular workouts every day to prevent the respiratory disease.

“We cannot live in isolation forever,” he said. “Regular exercise has far more health benefits than we know. The protection against this severe respiratory disease condition is just one of the many examples.”

Yan told Newsweek biking, rowing or other types of aerobics can help prevent or reduce the severity of the lung disease (ARDS).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated between 20 and 42 percent of all patients hospitalized with COVID-19 will develop ARDS.

Marty Kelly is a trainer originally from Ireland who has been a boxing coach in New York City.

He has been using quarantine working out twice a day and posting workouts online for people around the world stuck at home.

He used to play soccer but a test of manhood as a boy changed his life.

He told Fox News: “Growing up in Ireland was good as a kid. I was always active playing Gaelic football [soccer] from no age and doing boxing on and off since I was 10. I turned all my focus to Gaelic football. I loved it everyday I was playing, until one day I got hit at high school, I didn’t fight back, my brother heard about this, and called me right away. He said, “if you ever get punched in the face and don’t fight back you will not be allowed back in the house again.”

    He changed sports right then.

He added: “Immediately I felt disappointed and told myself I’d get back to boxing but instead I done one better I joined a local MMA gym with a bunch of older guys, tough guys bigger, stronger. I was the youngest by at least 5 years. I took beatings each week, one week my braces at the time came right out of my mouth. Funny looking back! I kept coming back, I kept getting better the guys took me under their wing. As time went on, I wanted to fight, I wanted to prove myself and challenge myself, really put myself out there. So I did. MMA alone has made me who I am today. I’ve fought and hustled my way to where I am at today. I’ve been luckily enough to have fought alongside Conor McGregor in a local show before he really made the big time.”

He said exercise will help people cope with the pandemic’s trauma.

To win physically, he said, first you have to win mentally.

“I’ve taken the mentality and transferred into my coaching and training of others, it’s not just a physical workout it is a mental work out also. We need to stay strong and fight this thing head on, we need to be mentally tough for ourselves and loved ones, stay active, keep moving for walks, online workouts, whatever it takes to move.”

Regular cardiovascular exercises might assist protect future coronavirus clients from developing an extreme issue and major cause of death referred to as severe breathing distress syndrome, according to research study from Zhen Yan of the University of Virginia School of Medication.

Yan, the director of the Center for Skeletal Muscle Research study at UVA’s Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Proving ground, recommends 30 minutes of cardiovascular training every day to assist ward off the breathing illness.

” We can not reside in isolation forever,” he stated. “Routine exercise has even more health advantages than we understand. The security versus this extreme respiratory disease condition is just one of the lots of examples.”

Humans naturally produce the antioxidant, referred to as “extracellular superoxide dismutase” (EcSOD)– and exercise ramps up the production, Yan said.

Yan informed Newsweek a session of biking, rowing or any other aerobic workout can assist avoid or a minimum of reduce the severity of the lung disease (ARDS).

The Centers for Illness Control and Prevention has actually approximated between 20 and 42 percent of all clients hospitalized with COVID-19 will develop ARDS.

Research study predating the pandemic recommended that around 45 percent of patients who develop serious ARDS will pass away, according to a news release from the University of Virginia Health System.

” EcSOD set a perfect example that we can gain from the biological procedure of exercise to advance medication,” Yan said.

” While we make every effort for more information about the secrets about the outstanding advantages of regular exercise, we do not have to wait up until we know whatever.”

Routine exercise may decrease the threat of intense breathing distress syndrome, a significant cause of death in patients with the COVID-19 virus, a leading workout researcher reports. He is urging individuals to exercise based on his findings, which likewise suggest a possible treatment approach.

An evaluation by Zhen Yan, PhD, of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, revealed that medical research study findings “strongly assistance” the possibility that workout can avoid or at least lower the severity of ARDS, which impacts between 3%and 17%of all patients with COVID-19 Based on available details, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 20%to 42%of clients hospitalized for COVID-19 will establish ARDS. The variety for clients admitted to extensive care is estimated at 67%to 85%.

Research study conducted prior to the pandemic recommended that roughly 45 percent of patients who develop extreme ARDS will pass away.

” All you hear now is either social distancing or ventilator, as if all we can do is either avoiding direct exposure or counting on a ventilator to survive if we get contaminated,” Yan said. “The other hand of the story is that approximately 80%of verified COVID-19 patients have mild symptoms without any requirement of breathing support. The question is why. Our findings about an endogenous antioxidant enzyme provide crucial hints and have interested us to establish a novel restorative for ARDS triggered by COVID-19”

    Powerful Antioxidant

Yan, the director of the Center for Skeletal Muscle Research at UVA’s Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center, put together a thorough evaluation of existing medical research study, including his own, looking at an antioxidant understood as “extracellular superoxide dismutase” (EcSOD).

A reduction in the antioxidant is seen in numerous diseases, consisting of intense lung illness, ischemic heart illness and kidney failure, Yan’s evaluation shows.

Research recommends that even a single session of workout increases production of the anti-oxidant, prompting Yan to prompt people to discover methods to exercise even while preserving social distancing. “We can not live in seclusion permanently,” he stated. “Routine exercise has even more health advantages than we know. The security against this serious respiratory illness condition is just one of the lots of examples.”

    Potential Treatments

Yan’s evaluation also recommends EcSOD as a possible treatment for ARDS and lots of other health conditions. Gene treatment, for example, might one day be utilized to increase production of the antioxidant so that its protective presence in the lungs is improved in patients battling COVID-19

Research has actually also shown that lab rats with chronic kidney illness had less kidney damage when treated with human EcSOD. The antioxidant is currently being proposed as a possible restorative for diabetic retinopathy, an issue of diabetes that can cause loss of sight.

Even more, EcSOD also may prove beneficial versus multi-organ dysfunction syndrome, in which numerous organs begin to fail. Efforts to deal with the condition with general antioxidants have actually been unsuccessful, however Yan recommends that comprehending EcSOD’s functions may let doctors use it in a more targeted – and hopefully more efficient – fashion.

” We frequently state that exercise is medicine. EcSOD set a best example that we can learn from the biological procedure of exercise to advance medication,” Yan said. “While we aim to learn more about the mysteries about the excellent advantages of routine workout, we do not have to wait till we understand everything.”
