Two dozen coronavirus cases have been linked to a wedding reception in Maine, health officials said.

The state’s health department said it has identified 18 people who tested positive for the virus after attending the Aug. 7 event at Big Moose Inn Cabins and Campground in Millinocket, about 70 miles north of Bangor.

Another six people who had close contact with those attendees have also tested positive, according to a state press release, adding that all of those infected are Maine residents.

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

About 65 people in total were at the wedding reception, health officials said in the release.

The inn did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday.

The health department is continuing to investigate the case, including conducting contact tracing for guests, staff and “people who potentially came in close contact with confirmed cases during and after the event,” the release said.

The state is also “communicating with Big Moose Inn about the nature of the event and adherence to State requirements.”

The Maine governor’s executive orders limit gatherings to 50 people indoors, 100 people outdoors and fewer if the space cannot accommodate five people per 1,000 feet.

As of Monday, Maine had a total of 4,197 coronavirus cases and 127 deaths, according to a state website.

Due to the pandemic, many couples have been forced to either postpone, downscale or in some cases cancel their planned weddings.

More than two dozen lifeguards on Long Beach Island tested positive for the coronavirus after attending social gatherings outside of work, healths officials said on Friday.

“The health department started receiving reports of COVID-19 activity among Surf City lifeguards on Saturday, July 18 and Harvey Cedars lifeguards on Sunday, July 19,” Daniel J. Krupinski, the Long Beach Island Health Department director, told Philadelphia public radio station WHYY.

Krupinski, who could not be immediately reached by NBC News for comment on Monday, said the lifeguards on the barrier island and popular summer destination are currently being isolated.

At least 12 of the positive cases stem from Surf City, NJ, and 17 from Harvey Cedars, according to WHYY and the Associated Press.

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

“We have reason to believe the case activity stems from common social gatherings outside of work on July 12 and 14,” Krupinski said, emphasizing health officials do not think they contracted COVID-19 on the beach or at work.

Dr. Ed Lifshitz, director of the New Jersey Department of Health’s communicable disease service, said earlier in the month that he believes indoor parties on places like Long Beach Island are responsible for the cases, according to WHYY. The New Jersey Department of Health could not be immediately reached for comment on Monday.

“We certainly have evidence that indoor parties associated with beach towns and other places have occurred,” he said.

A representative for the Long Beach local government did not immediately return NBC News’ request for comment.

New Jersey was one of the first states to be hit hard by the coronavirus, and has recorded over 180,000 cases and 15,000 deaths.

In California, now the state with the most amount of cases, 11 lifeguards tested positive for COVID-19 in Newport Beach, according to NBC Los Angeles. The cases were confirmed on Sunday. Health officials believe the numbers happened through “community spread” and not on the job.

While it is not believed these lifeguards contracted the virus at work, the job has become more difficult during the pandemic. Lifeguards often must make direct contact with the people they are trying to save.

Tom Gill, a spokesman for the nonprofit United States Lifesaving Association, told NBC News in May that “at the end of the day, there are going to be times when you have to get really close, but there are lots of ways to minimize the impact.”

Fourteen people have been injured in connection with a shooting late on Tuesday outside a funeral home on Chicago’s South Side, police officials said Tuesday.

The victims were taken by the Chicago fire department to nearby hospitals in serious condition, said a fire department spokesman, Larry Langford.

Mourners outside a funeral home were fired upon from a passing SUV, said Eric Carter, first deputy superintendent of the Chicago police. Carter said several targets of the shooting returned fire. The SUV later crashed and the occupants fled in several directions. One person of interest has been taken into custody. Carter said all the victims were adults.

Arnita Geder and Kenneth Hughes said they heard gunshots while in their home watching television, adding that they came outside to find bodies that were shot up and “laying everywhere”.

“We thought it was a war out here,” Geder told the Chicago Sun-Times. “It’s ridiculous all the shooting that’s going on out here, it really has to stop.”

The shooting comes as the Department of Homeland Security is planning to deploy dozens of federal agents to Chicago to deal with an uptick in violent crime in the city.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot, after threatening to sue if Donald Trump acted without her permission, said on Tuesday the city would be working with federal agents to fight crime.

Lightfoot has been skeptical of federal agents being sent to Chicago by Trump amid controversy in Portland, Oregon, where the Trump administration sent federal officers after weeks of protests there over police brutality and racial injustice that followed the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Lightfoot said she expected Chicago to receive resources that would plug into federal agencies that already work with the city, including the FBI, Drug Enforcement Agency and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Oregon’s governor and Portland’s mayor have expressed anger with the presence of the federal agents, saying that the city’s protests had started to ease just as the federal agents started taking action.

More details soon …

We’re making coronavirus coverage available without a subscription as a public service. But we depend on reader support to do this work. Please consider joining others in supporting local journalism in Alaska for just $3.23 a week.

Two Anchorage-based Alaska Airlines customer service agents have tested positive for the coronavirus, leading to the quarantine of about two dozen colleagues who may have come into close contact with them.

The two agents did not work with the public for the majority of their shifts at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport before they tested positive, according to Alaska Airlines spokesman Tim Thompson. They tested positive separately. Their cases were confirmed by the airline in separate emails to employees last Monday and Friday.

There are about a dozen employees in quarantine for each infected agent, Thompson said. Their job duties mostly include training, looking up flights — office work — but sometimes involve helping passengers at the counter or gate.

State officials on Monday reported Alaska’s highest number of new daily confirmed infections since the pandemic began in March — 141, including 64 seafood industry workers — but no new deaths. One hundred people have been hospitalized with the virus in total.

Alaska Airlines also sent Anchorage ground operations employees an email Sunday implementing a mandatory social distancing policy in light of “increasing concern for the spread of COVID-19.”

Under the policy, which was effective immediately, employees need to maintain 6 feet of distance from each other in work and break areas unless there is “a direct operational need” to be closer to a coworker. The airline already requires masks except while eating or on the ramp outside.

Parents, students question the value of college experience during COVID-19

New COVID-19 cases in the University of Washington Greek System have many people wondering what’s going to happen when tens of thousands of students return to campus in the fall.

SEATTLESeveral dozen students living in fraternity houses north of the University of Washington’s campus have tested positive for COVID-19 in recent days, according to a release from the university.

“This is concerning and reminds us that outbreaks can quickly spiral,” said Dr. Geoffrey Gottlieb, chair of the UW Advisory Committee on Communicable Diseases, which is involved in the response to the outbreak.

At least 38 students living in nine fraternity houses have tested positive. Public Health – Seattle & King County is leading the response and working with UW to contact affected students. Positive case numbers will be updated here.

All of the Greek houses are independent organizations, governed by national boards for each fraternity and sorority.

“While we were pleased to see most of the houses had previously taken measures to reduce resident capacity by up to 50% this summer in response to COVID-19, those measures are not sufficient without vigilant, daily preventive measures, such as wearing face coverings, physical distancing and hand hygiene,” Gottlieb said.

University of Washington campus

UW Medicine has set up a testing facility on campus within walking distance of the Greek houses in an effort to make it as easy as possible for students living in Greek houses or nearby apartments to get tested.

Students who have tested positive or with COVID-like symptoms are isolating in their rooms, and none have been hospitalized or reported severe symptoms of the virus, Greek leaders have said.

UW says there are about 1,000 students living in 25 fraternity houses in the neighborhood north of campus. Residents are being asked to quarantine or self-isolate, which means that those who have tested positive for COVID-19, those who have symptoms, and those who may have been exposed but are not showing symptoms are staying in their houses.

“What is occurring north of campus provides lessons for students as they consider their return to campus this fall. If everyone does their part to keep each other safe, we can continue to engage with one another and with our studies in the University environment by wearing face coverings and remaining physically distant,” Gottlieb said. “If we don’t, measures such as what are now required on Greek Row will be inevitable. My sense is all students want to return to some sense of normalcy, so I urge all of us to follow public health guidelines so we can do just that.”

Students who live in or near Greek houses should contact the UW Environmental Health & Safety Department by emailing covidehc@uw.edu if they have tested positive for COVID-19 or suspect they have been infected.

Visit the university’s COVID-19 website for more information.

Federal prosecutors have announced the arrests of more than six dozen people on charges ranging from murder to arson to looting in connection with rioting that grew out of protests over the death of George Floyd in the past five weeks.

Floyd’s death in Minneapolis Police custody on May 25 sparked protests around the country – but some demonstrations turned violent and saw looting, arson, vandalism and violence.

The arrests come from a broad range of charges. Many of them involved arson attacks.

Fox News has obtained an updated list of federal charges that have been filed around the country in connection with the unrest. It’s unclear exactly how many more investigations may be underway.

The most serious charges are against an Air Force sergeant accused of shooting four law enforcement officers – two of them fatally.

Steven Carrillo, 32, allegedly shot and killed Federal Protective Service Officer David Patrick Underwood and injured another officer as they stood in a guardhouse on May 29. When investigators showed up at his house in Ben Lomond, Calif., on June 6, he allegedly opened fire, fatally striking Sgt. Damon Gutzwille and wounding at least one other deputy.

Robert Alvin Justus Jr., 30, is charged with aiding and abetting in connection with Underwood’s death – for allegedly acting as the getaway driver. The criminal complaint alleges that the two men met in an online group with ties to the “Boogaloo” movement, a loosely defined violent ideology.

Carrillo was allegedly arrested in possession of the gun – a privately made firearm with no manufacturer’s markings – used in both the Oakland and Ben Lomond shootings. (DOJ)

IVY LEAGUE-TRAINED LAWYER ALLEGEDLY TRIED TO PASS OUT FIREBOMBS TO PROTESTERS

About a dozen of the arrests involved Molotov cocktails — including those of two New York City lawyers, Colinford Mattis, 32, and Urooj Rahman, 31, accused of tossing one into a police vehicle.

Former prosecutors have come out in defense of Colinford Mattis, 32, and Urooj Rahman, 31, a pair of lawyers accused of firebombing a New York City police vehicle last month.

In Las Vegas, Stephen T. Parshall, 35; Andrew Lynam, 23; and William L. Loomis, 40, allegedly planned to firebomb U.S. government buildings on May 30 before they were arrested in possession of Molotov cocktails. Investigators said they also had ties to the “Boogaloo” ideology.

Ivan Jacob Zecher, a 27-year-old convicted felon from Jacksonville, Fla., was arrested for unlawful assembly for allegedly taking part in a crowd that blocked traffic and hurled water bottles and rocks at local police. Then investigators said they found Molotov cocktail in his backpack – which counts as a firearm under federal law. Previously convicted felons are not allowed to possess firearms.

Arson attacks in cities around the country have often targeted police vehicles.

Five men in their early 20s from Gainseville, Ga., allegedly set fire to a police car outside an officer’s personal residence on June 2.

Margaret Aislinn Channon, a 25-year-old from Tacoma, Wash., allegedly torched five unmarked police vehicles in Seattle. She was identified by distinguishable tattoos spotted on surveillance video, other images at the scene and her own social media photos, according to the DOJ.

Federal investigators said they tracked down alleged arsonist Lore-Elisabeth Blumenthal, 33, after matching her T-shirt to one sold at an online Etsy store. She is accused of burning two parked Philadelphia police vehicles near City Hall on May 30.

Branden Michael Wolfe, 23, allegedly lit a fire at the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct building on May 28 – after officers withdrew and rioters overran the station. When investigators arrested him a few days later, they said he was wearing stolen police equipment.

Richard Rubalcava, of Raleigh, N.C., allegedly torched and looted two businesses during riots on May 30. The DOJ said surveillance video shows him reentering a Dollar General store multiple times and leaving with bags full of merchandise before lighting a fire inside. He also allegedly stole a cash register from a restaurant and left a burning towel inside before leaving.

On June 1, a group of people broke into a gun store in Vacaville, Calif., and stole about 70 firearms. Investigators made five arrests and said they recovered 13 handguns.

Peter Fratus, a 39-year-old from Massachusetts, faces charges of transmitting threatening communications across state lines for allegedly sending racist emails to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw.

“While the First Amendment gives us the right to express our own opinions, violent physical threats are certainly not protected speech,” said Michael J. Driscoll, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Division. “When someone threatens the life of another person, it’s a clear red flag and we have to take their despicable words at face value.”

Also in Philadelphia, 24-year-old David Elmakayes is accused of blowing up an ATM and possessing an illegal firearm. The city saw dozens of ATM bombings during the protests as looters attempted to break inside to their safes, which killed at least one man. Police in the city have filed local charges against at least one man, Talib Crump, for allegedly selling homemade dynamite.

And seven people were arrested in Louisville, Ky., on riot-related charges that included allegedly looting drugs out of a pharmacy — leaving patients unable to fill their prescriptions.

Protesters have also vandalized, defaced and destroyed statues that they find problematic around the country, particularly Confederate monuments, but also depictions of the explorer Christopher Columbus and former U.S. presidents — including George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant.
