A group of protesters beat a man bloody and unconscious in the street after he crashed a truck during a confrontation that unfolded near a Black Lives Matter demonstration in downtown Portland late Sunday night, according to police, witnesses and multiple videos.
A man suspected in a downtown beating that left a man bloody and unconscious in the street after he crashed a truck during a confrontation that unfolded near a downtown Portland demonstration is now in custody.
Marquise Love, 25, turned himself in and was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on Friday morning, according to Portland police. He’s accused of felony assault, coercion and rioting and is being held on $260,000 bail.
Love is suspected in a Sunday incident where several people kicked, punched and pushed a man, Adam Haner, to the ground after his white Ford slammed into a light pole near Southwest Broadway and Taylor Street.
The incident happened blocks from a rally outside the Multnomah County Justice Center.
Police later identified Love as a suspect and said they had probable cause to arrest him.
The attack against Haner has since generated international headlines and prompted condemnation from Portland’s elected leaders, including Mayor Ted Wheeler, City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty and Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt.
Longtime activists and protest organizers in the city have also decried the violent episode and said the assailants threatened the message behind Black Lives Matter.
Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell on Friday thanked people who provided information and tips in the case.
“I am pleased the suspect in this case turned himself in and appreciate all of the efforts to facilitate this safe resolution,” he said in a statement.
Haner is home and recovering from multiple injuries. Some 3,700 people had donated over $136,000 to an online fundraiser in his name as of Friday morning.

The coronavirus outbreak in Nashville that once centered in Antioch and other southeastern neighborhoods is shifting to the city’s center, spreading among downtown residents and patrons of bars, honky-tonks and other crowded Lower Broadway businesses.
The city government on Tuesday released heat maps showing the virus is spreading fastest and furthest in the downtown area, and leaders said the outbreak threatens to push hospitals to the brink in the coming weeks or months if left unchecked.
The virus moving downtown also means new infections are shifting from older, Latino populations to younger, non-Latino residents, said Dr. Alex Jahangir, head of the city’s coronavirus task force. Younger people are less likely to suffer serious complications from the virus but can still spread it to others who are more vulnerable.
“These young people, more than likely, are not going to get sick. Statistics will tell you that,” Jahangir said. “But two weeks from now, those people will infect their parents or grandparents. Those individuals will get sick and take up more hospital capacity.”
As the outbreak swells downtown, the city faces the virus on at least three fronts. Infections are rising among downtown residents, many of whom live clustered in the high-rise apartments of the Nashville skyline. Contact tracing also backtracked clusters of new infections to bars, which prompted the mayor to close all bars for two weeks starting last Friday. Finally, officials acknowledged the ongoing “challenge” of Nashville’s “transportainment industry” — pedal taverns, party tractors and the like – which continue to operate at half capacity.
Health Director Michael Caldwell said pedal taverns and similar vehicles are preferable to bars because they are outside and therefore less likely to spread the virus. Crowds continued to gather on these vehicles throughout Independence Day weekend, drinking and cheering as they idled between the shuttered honky-tonks on Lower Broadway.
“I’ve noticed that a number of them are not properly social distancing, they’re not wearing face masks and it is a concern that I have,” Caldwell said. “We are going to continue to work on trying to find ways to get them to be more compliant.”
Although bars remain closed on Lower Broadway, the street was busy last weekend with people waiting in line to enter restaurants and pedestrians, many of whom defied the city’s mandates to wear masks or stay six feet apart. The crowds drew some calls for Nashville leaders to close the city to tourists. Jahangir said Tuesday there had been no discussions about limiting travel, affirming “Nashville is open.”
As of Tuesday, the coronavirus had spread to more than 12,000 Nashville residents, of which approximately 4,000 remain actively infected and 167 are currently hospitalized. Officials reported five new deaths on Tuesday — including a 30-year-old man with no known prior medical issues — bringing the citywide death toll to 122. The cumulative positivity rate of tests has steadily risen over the past month, from 9.4% to 11.3%, as the virus becomes increasingly prevalent in Davidson County.
The Vanderbilt analysis stated Nashville’s transmission rate — a measurement of how many uninfected people catch the virus from each infected person — rose from as high as 1.16 to 1.32 in the past week.
“And that momentum means more cases, which leads to more hospitalizations, and, sadly, more deaths,” the Vanderbilt researchers said in a tweet about the new analysis.
During a news conference on Tuesday morning, Mayor John Cooper referenced the rising transmission rate as he drew a worrisome comparison between Nashville and Houston, city with a similarly massive health care industry.
Houston officials have warned their hospitals could be overwhelmed by the virus in just a few weeks.
“The city of Houston has an average transmission rate of just 1.2, which is below our transmission rate,” Cooper said. “Without immediate action by every Nashvillian, we may soon find our local hospitals having a similar trend.”
City officials were not specific on when exactly Nashville may run short of hospital beds if the outbreak continues to grow at its current pace. Jahangir, the head of the city’s coronavirus task force, said he held daily conversations with state officials about a hospital overflow plan that would activate an emergency coronavirus wing at Nashville General Hospital.
But will we need it? And when? Jahangir said he just didn’t know.
“Four weeks? Six weeks?” Jahangir said. “I don’t know the exact number. But I do know that’s where my mind is … It’s not unreasonable to think that in the next couple weeks one could potentially have a problem.”

The Harris County Fire Marshal said their complaint hotline and website form received 580 complaints due to overcrowding and/or businesses being open when they shouldn’t be, but no citations were issued yet.
ABC13 spoke with one of the owners of the club. The owner said the nightclub opened up because they are registered as a restaurant.

A Wisconsin sheriff reportedly said the downtown Madison area was not safe Wednesday after a turbulent few days that included violent protesters vandalizing buildings, toppling statues and attacking a state senator.
Dane County Sheriff David Mahoney said his agency stands ready to deploy additional resources to assist in handling any new protests. More than one hundred demonstrators gathered in Madison again on Wednesday night, according to Madison’s WMTV.
The recent violence prompted Gov. Tony Evers to activate the National Guard.
Both Evers and Mahoney have been criticized for their early responses to these protests. Mahoney defended his department’s response to the violent outbreak Tuesday and said that by the time his deputies assembled the violence had mostly ceased, WKOW reported. City officials said the earlier firebombing of the City County Building had disrupted a 911 response center, which temporarily prevented incoming 911 calls.
“That is not the behavior that advances reforms in our country,” Mahoney said. He said he supported most of the protesters’ message against police brutality but said violence could impact their efforts.

Mahoney called on activist groups Freedom Inc. and Urban Triage to publicly denounce Tuesday’s violence in the city.
The Communications Director for Urban Triage, April Kigeye, is attempting to arrange a meeting with the sheriff. She said the group didn’t take part in Tuesday’s events, WKOW reported.
Kigeye urged people “to show the same outrage and disapproval when Black and brown bodies are shot & killed, as when property such as statues are taken down.”
The unrest on Tuesday started after a black man was arrested at a restaurant after police said he brought a bat and a megaphone into the establishment, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

A criminal investigation is underway after a massive explosion in a downtown Los Angeles warehouse on Saturday injured 12 firefighters and left several buildings damaged, law enforcement sources told The Times.
Downtown was rocked Saturday night by the blast, which broke out in an older business district off East 3rd Street, known for its various smoke shops. Authorities referred to it as Bong Row.
“We are in the early stages of an investigation. We are looking at every aspect at this stage. We haven’t determined a cause,” Los Angeles Police Department Assistant Chief Horace Frank said. “The explosion was massive and those firefighters are very lucky to be alive.”

An initial investigation identified the business that caught fire as Smoke Tokes, a warehouse distributor with supplies for butane hash oil, said Capt. Erik Scott, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Authorities said carbon dioxide and butane canisters were found inside the building, and investigators are trying to determine whether oil stores on site might have sparked the blast. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
The owner of Smoke Tokes could not be reached for comment.
The explosion damaged several storefronts, melted fire helmets and left one firetruck burned and covered in debris. Officials said firefighters had to pass through a fireball to escape.
“Firefighters were coming out with obvious damage and burns,” Scott said. They ran “straight through that ball of flame to get to safety across the street.”
Eleven firefighters received treatment for burn injuries at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, according to the LAFD. A 12th firefighter was treated and released at an emergency room Saturday night for “a minor extremity injury,” said Nicholas Prange, an LAFD spokesman.
As of Sunday morning, three firefighters had been discharged from the hospital. Eight remained hospitalized, including two in critical but stable condition.
All were expected to survive, officials said. Doctors at USC said one firefighter would probably need skin grafts.
Firefighters first received a call about 6:30 p.m. Saturday about a structure fire in the 300 block of Boyd Street south of Little Tokyo. The businesses were not open at the time.
“This fire started off like any other bread-and-butter structure fire where we had a one-story commercial building with smoke showing,” Scott said.
LAFD Station No. 9 responded. It is one of the busiest fire stations in the nation, serving one of Los Angeles’ most troubled spots: skid row. On top of the frequent calls that existed even before the pandemic, firefighters there in recent weeks also have been conducting COVID-19 tests on skid row.
When the fire broke out Saturday night, firefighters went to the roof to try to create ventilation, and firefighters used power saws to force entry, Scott said. Others went inside, attempting to find the source of the blaze.
“It was routine until they heard a rumbling, high-pitched sound — they described it like a jet engine spinning up — along with pressurized smoke,” Scott said. Firefighters started backing out, he said, but “conditions drastically changed within moments.”
The explosion, he said, created a 30-foot-wide fireball.
“This is one of the worst incidents in recent history that we have been to,” Scott said. “Our firefighters were driven off the roof, frantically scurrying down the aerial ladder to safety through a blowtorch. Firefighters inside had to escape a massive explosion.”
All of the injured firefighters work at Station 9, according to LAFD.
Initially, officials could not account for all the firefighters.
In an LAFD radio transmission, an official is heard screaming, “Mayday! Explosion! I have two down firefighters.”
“This is a difficult time for our fire family,” Scott said, his voice tired. “Our number one concern is to take care of the injured as well as the mental health of the other firefighters on scene.”
It took more than 230 firefighters an hour and 42 minutes after the call came in to extinguish the blaze, authorities said. Video at the scene captured a series of smaller explosions after the initial blast.
On Sunday, the heavily damaged warehouse still stood, Scott said. Nearby streets were cordoned off with yellow tape.
The scene left by the fire was apocalyptic. On Sunday, the yellow jackets of firefighters who had responded to the blaze still lay on the ground, with holes burned in them. Melted helmets were scattered about.
There was a charred firetruck, Scott said, and a blackened fire hose. There were discharged fire extinguishers “possibly that were utilized to extinguish our own members,” Scott said.
LAFD Chief Ralph M. Terrazas said the firefighters responding to the call sensed something was wrong inside the building but could not escape before the explosion.
“When one of your own is injured … you can imagine the amount of mental stress,” Terrazas said. “A lot of our firefighters were traumatized.”
Along with LAFD arson investigators, the explosion is being investigated by the criminal conspiracy section of the LAPD’s major crimes division and the gang and narcotics division, Assistant Chief Frank said.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ national response team will arrive Monday to assist in the investigation, federal officials said Sunday.
The team brings together science and fire experts who can reconstruct scenes in detail. It assisted most recently in California on the Conception boat fire, which killed 34 people in the vessel off Santa Barbara in September. The team also assisted in the investigation of the Ghost Ship warehouse fire, which killed 36 people in December 2016.
In 2016, there was another major fire at a downtown L.A. business called Smoke Tokes at an address nearby on 3rd Street. It was unclear whether that business and the one that burned Saturday were connected.
“We are aware of a fire in September 2016, nearby on 3rd Street, with a building doing business as Smoke Tokes,” Scott said Sunday. “Our arson investigators are aware of that incident, and that’s part of the active investigation.”
It took more than 160 firefighters about two hours to put out the 2016 blaze, with the flames largely confined to the wholesaler and distributor of smoking paraphernalia, The Times reported at the time.
Firefighters encountered pressurized gas cylinders that exploded amid the inferno, but there were no injuries in the 2016 fire.
“It was a tricky fire for us,” LAFD Battalion Chief Mark Curry said at the time. “We had multiple explosions going off inside the fire while it was burning due to the butane containers releasing.”

A massive fire broke out in downtown Los Angeles Saturday evening, touching off an explosion and leaving nearly a dozen firefighters injured.
“There was a significant explosion that caused a mayday report,” Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott said in a briefing carried live on Twitter. “This was upgraded to a major emergency category.”
Several firefighters suffered injuries while trying to bring the raging flames under control.
“Tragically, we have 11 firefighters with burn injuries,” Scott said. Their exact conditions were not known.
The fire was initially reported at 327 East Boyd St. just before 6:30 p.m. It started in a single-story commercial building, and quickly spread to other nearby structures.
In a statement shared on Twitter earlier in the evening, the LAFD reported “over 230 firefighters are responding. Firefighters have moved to a defensive posture for fire attack, and a medical branch has been created for treating and transporting injured firefighters.”
Video posted on the NBC4 News Los Angeles website and Twitter feed showed multiple ambulances and fire trucks on the scene.
Flames and thick black smoke could be seen in the footage as fire crews struggled to bring the blaze under control. Streets in the area were blocked off to traffic, and residents were urged to avoid the area.
The fire was knocked out at 8:08 p.m. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation and “is of paramount concern,” Scott said.
