]]>Protesters blocked the entrance to the hospital where two Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies were in critical condition after being shot Saturday in an ambush, shouting, “We hope they die,” according to the department.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department described the scene in a late Saturday tweet and warned protesters late Saturday to clear the access to the emergency room at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood.
“To the protesters blocking the entrance & exit of the HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM yelling ‘We hope they die,’ referring to 2 LA Sheriff’s ambushed today in #Compton: DO NOT BLOCK EMERGENCY ENTRIES 7 EXITS TO THE HOSPITAL,” tweeted the department. “People’s lives are at stake when ambulances can’t get through.”
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on Sunday condemned the shooting and called the jeers “abhorrent.”
“There’s no place in civilized society for anybody to draw an arm and to shoot our law enforcement officers that put their lives on the line,” said Mr. Garcetti on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I won’t ever let a couple of voices that not only are uncalled for, but it’s abhorrent to say something like that when we have two deputies, two sheriff’s deputies, who are in grave condition.”

Video of the incident showed a gunman in dark clothing approach the passenger’s side window of the police car and fire directly into the vehicle before running off, a shooting that the sheriff’s department said was “without warning or provocation.”
The Los Angeles City Council cut $150 million from the $3 billion LAPD budget in July in response to calls from Black Lives Matter protesters to defund the police, bringing staffing to its lowest level since 2008.
“My thoughts are not just with those two deputies, but with their families and everybody in the Los Angeles sheriff’s office that’s hanging on,” said Mr. Garcetti. “Of course there’s an important conversation going on around policing in this country, but these are folks who put their lives on the line for us, and we will find justice for them.”

Family members at the scene identified the dead man as Dijon Kizzee, 29, CBS-Los Angeles reported, but the sheriff’s department said it could not immediately confirm his identity.
Police say the handgun was recovered and no deputies were injured. TV news helicopters showed a gun near the body.
Protesters gathered and more than 100 people marched to a sheriff’s station. Some chanted “Say his name” and “No justice, no peace,” the Times reported.
Neighborhood resident Arlander Givens, 68, questioned why deputies fired at a man who, according to the sheriff’s official, wasn’t holding a weapon.
“If he reached down to grab it, that’s different,” Givens told the Times. “But if it’s on the ground, why shoot? That means he was unarmed.”
Dean, in a Monday afternoon press conference, said investigators had not yet interviewed witnesses or reviewed any surveillance or cellphone video.
“Give us time to conduct our investigation,” he said. “We will get all of the facts of this case and eventually present them.”
The Sheriff’s Department said multiple independent investigations began at the scene.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is set to vote Tuesday to fund a body-worn camera program for the sheriff’s department. Sheriff Alex Villanueva has feuded with the supervisors in recent months and repeatedly called on them to approve the money for the body cameras.

]]>Three people have been charged in Tennessee with keeping a toddler in a dog cage surrounded by mice and snakes including a 10-foot boa constrictor, according to reports.
Deputies made the disturbing discovery Thursday in Buchanan after being called to a property to investigate a report of animal abuse, Fox 17 Nashville reported Friday.
Henry County Sheriff Monte Belew described the cage as a dog kennel and said the child, an 18-month-old boy, had been living there for some time, according to the station. The cage was crawling with bugs and smelled of urine.

Deputies found an 18-month-old boy child was found inside of a dog cage after being called to a Tennessee property for a report of animal abuse, according to reports.

“In a single-wide trailer in the living room you’ve got a kid caged, you’ve got eight snakes and you’ve got the snake’s feed butted up against the child’s cage,” Belew said. “Eight snakes in the same room, then mice running everywhere.”
Child welfare workers took the boy, the station reported. Further details on his condition were not immediately available.
Belew said the boy’s mother Heather Scarbough, 42, was one of the individuals arrested.
The others were her husband, Thomas Jefferson Brown, 46, and his father Charles Brown, 82;
They were all charged with aggravated child abuse, aggravated cruelty to animals, possession of a firearm while committing another felony, manufacturing marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, Fox 17 reported.

Deputies seized 17 guns including an AR-15 rifle. They also seized six chickens and roosters, 56 dogs, 10 rabbits, four parakeets, three cats, eight snakes, a pheasant and a gecko.

]]>The half-brother of a black man found hanged in a Southern California park was killed by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies Wednesday after they say he opened fire on them.
The shots were fired shortly after 4:30 p.m. in the Kern County community of Rosamond, just north of the Los Angeles County border in the Antelope Valley, Sheriff’s Department officials said.
Detectives with the sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit were tracking a man who was wanted for kidnapping, spousal assault and assault with a deadly weapon but when they tried to stop his car, he opened the door and began shooting, authorities said.

Deputies shot and killed the man. A woman in the car was wounded in the chest and was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening while a 7-year-old girl in the car wasn’t hurt, sheriff’s officials said.
The woman in the car wasn’t the accuser in the spousal assault case, authorities said.
The man was identified as Terron Jammal Boone by an attorney representing the family of Robert Fuller, a 24-year-old man who was found hanging from a tree in Palmdale last week. Officials say the death appeared to be a suicide but family members have disputed that.

Palmdale is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) away from Rosamond.
“At this time, until we receive all of the information, the family and their legal team doesn’t have any further comment on this incident. The family respectfully asks that their privacy be respected,” attorney Jamon Hicks said in a statement.
Boone had been charged Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court with assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, domestic violence, and criminal threats.
Fuller’s body was discovered last week in a park near Palmdale City Hall. An autopsy was conducted last Friday and the county medical examiner-coroner’s office said he appeared to have died by suicide.
The finding prompted an outcry by his family, who believed he wasn’t suicidal, and community members who called for an independent investigation and autopsy. More than 1,000 people turned out for a protest and memorial Saturday around the tree where Fuller’s body was found.
The city of Palmdale issued a statement supporting an independent inquiry.
Federal authorities, including the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, said they will review local investigations into the hanging deaths of Fuller and of Malcolm Harsch, a 38-year-old homeless black man who was found hanging from a tree on May 31 in Victorville, a desert city in San Bernardino County east of Palmdale.

]]>The half brother of Robert Fuller, a young Black man who was found hanging from a tree in Palmdale last week, was shot dead by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies during a shootout Wednesday afternoon in Kern County, according to law enforcement sources and an attorney for the family.
The shooting occurred about 4:30 p.m. in a parking lot in Rosamond, a community about 20 miles north of Palmdale. The killing came as activists and community members have been openly critical of how Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies handled the investigation into Fuller’s death.
Lt. Robert Westphal of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the fatal shooting occurred during a kidnapping and assault investigation that is being handled by the department’s major-crimes bureau.
Westphal did not identify the man who was fatally shot. Jamon Hicks, an attorney for the Fuller family, confirmed that the man killed by deputies was Terron Boone.
Court records show that Boone was charged Tuesday with multiple criminal counts including criminal threats, assault, false imprisonment and domestic violence.
On Wednesday afternoon, Westphal said detectives trailed the car that the suspect was riding in and followed it back to an apartment complex in Rosamond. The deputies attempted a traffic stop.
The suspect, later identified as Boone, exited the car’s passenger side and opened fire, according to Westphal, who said the suspect fired at least five shots toward the detectives. Deputies returned fire and shot him the chest, killing him, according to Westphal.
The woman driving the car was shot once in the chest and taken to a local hospital, where she was treated and released Wednesday night. A 7-year-old girl was in the car’s back seat but was not injured in the gunfire, Westphal said. The child’s relationship to the other two people in the car was unclear.
Detectives recovered a semiautomatic handgun at the scene.
None of the detectives nor their vehicles were equipped with cameras, but investigators are trying to recover footage from Ring cameras and other home video systems in the area, Westphal said.
Surveillance video of the incident posted by the Rosamond Community Watchdog, a local news platform, showed multiple vehicles trailing a dark SUV into a housing complex parking lot. Voices repeatedly shouted, “Hands up!” before gunfire erupted.
Siara Anderson said she was on the balcony of an apartment building adjacent to the parking lot in the 3400 block of 15th Street West when Boone was shot. Anderson said that she heard four or five gunshots and saw a man slumped in the passenger seat of a blue sport utility vehicle, clearly dead.
Law enforcement officers, in plainclothes but wearing bulletproof vests, were at the scene, she said, along with about five unmarked police cars.
Hicks, the attorney representing the Fuller family, said relatives and the legal team had no further comment on the incident.
“The family respectfully asks that their privacy be respected. Our prayers remain with the Fuller family,” Hicks said in a statement.
Fuller was discovered hanging from a tree in a Palmdale park on June 10, and the initial cause of death was listed as suicide. But after protests, sheriff’s officials said they would do a full investigation, with assistance from the FBI and state attorney general.
Thousands protested this weekend at the park, with some describing racial incidents in the Antelope Valley and raising concerns over whether Fuller was lynched.
“This is really crazy to all of us,” Fuller’s sister Diamond Alexander said. “We want to find out the truth of what really happened. Everything that they’ve been telling us has not been right.
“To be here, staring at this tree, it don’t make no sense,” Alexander added. “My brother was not suicidal. My brother was a survivor.”
Fuller’s family and friends described him as a peacemaker, a street-smart man with shoulder-length dreadlocks and a bright smile who loved music, anime and video games and mostly stayed to himself. Days before he died, he attended a Black Lives Matter protest.
