President Trump defended comments he made earlier this year about the coronavirus pandemic in interviews with journalist Bob Woodward, telling Fox News’ “Hannity” Wednesday that he wanted to “show a calmness.”

“I’m the leader of the country, I can’t be jumping up and down and scaring people,” Trump told host Sean Hannity. “I don’t want to scare people. I want people not to panic, and that’s exactly what I did.”

MEADOWS ADMITS ‘I WOULD NOT HAVE RECOMMENDED’ WOODWARD HAVE ACCESS TO TRUMP FOR INTERVIEWS

Excerpts from some of the interviews, which form the basis of Woodward’s forthcoming book, “Rage,” were published by The Washington Post earlier Wednesday. In early February, Trump told Woodward that the coronavirus was “deadly stuff” while publicly comparing it to seasonal flu. More than a month later, on March 19, Trump admitted to Woodward that he “wanted to always play it [the virus] down.

“I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic,” Trump added at the time.

On Wednesday night, the president condemned Woodward as an author of “hit jobs.”

WOODWARD DISMISSES CLAIMS HE COULD HAVE SAVED LIVES BY PUBLISHING TRUMP CORONAVIRUS REMARKS SOONER

“He does hit jobs with everybody, he even did it on Obama … constant hit jobs. On [George W.] Bush, I guess, they did three books, they were all terrible,” Trump said. “So I figured, you know, ‘Let’s give it a little shot, I’ll speak to him.’ It wasn’t a big deal, I speak to him and let’s see. I don’t know if the book is good or bad, I have no idea. I probably, almost definitely won’t read it because I don’t have time to read it. But I gave it a little bit of a shot, sounds like it’s not going to be good.”

Trump also defended his early response to the pandemic, citing his late January decision to limit flights to the U.S. from China, a move Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden panned as in keeping with what he called Trump’s “record of hysteria, xenophobia and fear-mongering.”

“If you look at the representatives of Joe Biden, you see what they were saying. They were saying ‘no problem’, ‘this won’t be a problem,'” Trump told Hannity. “He didn’t think it was going to be a problem until months later. He was way late.”

The president also recalled House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., touring San Francisco’s Chintown in late February in an apparent bid to ease fears about the virus.

“Nobody wanted me to do the ban on China, and as you know, shortly thereafter, I [instituted] a ban on [travel from] Europe, and that was even more controversial, and it was good, because I saw what was going on in Italy and in Spain and in France, and we did a ban there,” Trump said. “And if we didn’t do those bans, we would have had numbers that were much, much [worse].”

Trump also criticized Democratic governors for keeping their states on lockdown, citing the swing states of North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

“If you look at some of the states like North Carolina and Pennsylvania — you look at what they are doing — they are shut down, they are still shut down,” said the president, adding, “it’s a shame — They don’t know what they’re doing, frankly.”

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany defended President Trump on Wednesday after a book by journalist Bob Woodward claimed Trump said he knew the coronavirus was “deadly” but went to great lengths to downplay the virus in public.

“When you are facing insurmountable challenges, it is important to express confidence, it is important to express calm,” McEnany told reporters in a briefing from the White House.

“He makes clear that he doesn’t want to see chaos, by the way, which is the second part of the quote which you failed to read,” she continued, addressing a reporter who had read part of the quote.

“The president just days after having this discussion with Bob Woodward, said this from this podium, on March 30, he said, ‘I do want them to stay calm, we are doing a great job, if you look at the individual statements they are all true, stay calm, it will go away but it’s important to stay calm,’” the press secretary said. “So this president does what leaders do — good leaders — it’s stay calm and resolute at a time when you face an insurmountable challenge.”

KAYLEIGH MCENANY: DEMOCRATS ‘PLAYING POLITICS’ ABOUT A CORONAVIRUS VACCINE

According to Woodward, as recounted in The Washington Post, the president received a warning from national security adviser Robert O’Brien on Jan. 28 that the coronavirus epidemic would be the “biggest national security threat” of his presidency.

“The president reportedly told Woodward in a Feb. 7 call, ‘You just breathe the air and that’s how it’s passed. And so, that’s a very tricky one. That’s a very delicate one. It’s also more deadly than even your strenuous flu,’” The Post reported.

“This is deadly stuff,” the president added.

But on Feb. 26, Trump told Americans that coronavirus is “like a flu.”

CUOMO SAYS TRUMP ‘CAUSED’ CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK IN NEW YORK

“This is a flu. This is like a flu,” the president said in a briefing. “It’s a little like a regular flu that we have flu shots for. And we’ll essentially have a flu shot for this in a fairly quick manner.”

The quotes came from recordings from Woodward conversations with Trump available on the Post’s website. On why Trump sat down with Woodward, McEnany said Wednesday it was because he has been the “most transparent president in history.”

Trump on March 19 told Woodward, “I wanted to always play it down.” He had declared a national emergency over the virus days earlier, but also said, “I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic.”

On that day, 14,200 people had tested positive for the virus and 187 had died. Since then, around 6.35 million in the U.S. have tested positive for the virus and over 190,000 have died.

  • President Donald Trump mocked Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden for wearing a mask.
  • “If I were a psychiatrist, right, you know I’d say, ‘This guy’s got some big issues,'” he said at a packed campaign rally Thursday night.
  • Trump also mocked Utah Sen. Mitt Romney for marching with Black Lives Matter protesters while also wearing a mask.

President Donald Trump mocked Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden at a Pennsylvania campaign rally Thursday night, saying the former vice president enjoyed wearing a mask too much.

“Did you ever see a man who likes a mask as much as him?” Trump said.

Trump, who rarely permits himself to be seen wearing a mask in public, chastised Biden’s habit of letting his mask hang from his face as he gives speeches.

“It gives him a feeling of security,” Trump said, adding: “If I were a psychiatrist, right, you know I’d say, ‘This guy’s got some big issues.'”

In the middle of his attack on Biden’s mask use, Trump also advised rally attendees to wear masks themselves — especially ahead of the upcoming Labor Day holiday.

“Look, I’m all for it, we have a big weekend, distance on the weekend, and all of that stuff,” Trump said at the rally, held outdoors at the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport. “And wear your mask when you’re close together, and wash your hands and all that stuff.”

Medical experts overwhelmingly agree that face masks help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The president first publicly wore a face-covering on July 11 during a visit to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

In June, however, he told The Wall Street Journal Americans wear face coverings to show their disapproval of him and in April, he also said he won’t personally follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidance on wearing masks. And in May, Trump retweeted a Fox News commentator mocking Biden for wearing one.

During the rally, Trump repeatedly praised his own handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which has so far infected over 6.1 million Americans and killed more than 186,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

He asserted that had it not been for the pandemic, he would have not needed to campaign to handily win reelection.

“We’re going up and [Biden is] dropping like a rock in water, and before the China virus, this election was over, now I had to go back to work,” he said, using a racial slur for the coronavirus. “And we’ve done a great job on it. We don’t get the credit.”

In June, Romney marched with a group of evangelical Christians to the White House, said he was protesting “to end violence, to end brutality, and to make sure that people understand that Black Lives Matter.”

“He had a lot of mask on,” Trump said.

President Trump on Monday declined to condemn the actions of the suspected 17-year-old shooter of three protesters against police brutality in Kenosha, Wis., claiming, without evidence, that it appeared the gunman was acting in self defense.

Kyle Rittenhouse has been charged with six criminal counts, including first-degree intentional homicide, for the shooting last week that left two protesters dead and a third injured. An investigation is ongoing, which the president also acknowledged.

The incident occurred during the third night of unrest following the police shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake, who was shot in the back multiple times at point-blank range.

When asked during a Monday press briefing whether he would condemn the Illinois teen’s actions, Trump defended Rittenhouse, suggesting that it appeared to him the shooter was acting in self defense.

“He was trying to get away from them, I guess, it looks like,” Trump said, noting the incident was under investigation. “I guess he was in very big trouble. He probably would have been killed,” Trump said.

Graphic video from the chaotic scene only tell a partial story. The shooter’s alleged actions have split onlookers on party lines, with Republicans painting Rittenhouse as sort of tragic figure — a martyred patriot whose extreme actions were born of Democrat failures to quell violence on their streets.

Biden: Trump 'Can't Stop The Violence Because For Years He Has Fomented It'

Democrats meanwhile have taken a dimmer view of the situation, pointing to the president’s increasingly divisive rhetoric, and past endorsements of violence against protesters, as evidence of a clear message to renegade gun owners to feel that they can act with impunity in the name of “law and order.”

Trump, who has made violence in “Democrat cities” a key talking point against 2020 rival Joe Biden, plans to visit Kenosha, Wis., on Tuesday “to see the people that did such a good job for me” during the protests.

When asked whether he was worried that his presence, which comes against the Kenosha mayor’s wishes, might inflame an already heated situation, Trump said: “Well, it could also increase enthusiasm, and it could increase love and respect for our country. And that’s why I’m going.”

The president will not during this trip meet with the family of Jacob Blake, the man whose shooting and subsequent paralyzing sparked the Kenosha uprisings, citing a wariness of attending a meeting that Trump said would include the family’s attorney.

“I thought it would be better not to do anything where there are lawyers involved. They wanted me to speak, but they wanted to have lawyers involved, and I thought that was inappropriate, so I didn’t do that,” he said.

Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe defended his decision to scale back in-person election security briefings to Congress in favor of written reports and accused members of Congress of leaking information “within minutes” of briefings.

Ratcliffe told “Sunday Morning Futures” he had been going above and beyond in briefing “not just the oversight committees but every member of Congress” but will no longer do so.

ODNI ‘PRIMARILY CONCERNED’ WITH CHINA, IRAN, RUSSIA ‘SEEKING TO COMPROMISE’ 2020 ELECTION

“Within minutes of one of those briefings ending, a number of members of Congress went to a number of different outlets and leaked classified information for political purposes,” Ratcliffe told host Maria Bartiromo. “To create a narrative that simply isn’t true, that somehow Russia is a greater national security threat than China.”

“I don’t mean to minimize Russia. They are a serious national security threat, but day in, day out, the threats that we face from China are significantly greater,” Ratcliffe said. “Anyone who says otherwise is just politicizing intelligence for their own narrative.”

On Friday, Ratcliffe told lawmakers that his office “will primarily meet its obligation to keep Congress fully and currently informed leading into the Presidential election through written finished intelligence products.” He wrote that it would better protect sources and methods while ensuring that it reflects “the highest analytic standards.”

REPUBLICAN REP INTRODUCES BILL TO KO UNEMPLOYMENT PERK FOR RIOTERS

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., accused the Trump administration of pushing a false narrative to downplay Russian interference in the 2020 election.

“They’re going to put it in writing now instead of giving an oral briefing. That doesn’t make any sense unless the goal is not to allow members of Congress, the representatives of the American people, to ask questions,” Schiff told CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.

“Concealing the truth is concealing Russians are again intervening to help the president in his reelection,” Schiff said.

RUSSIA ACCUSATIONS RESURFACE AS DEMOCRATS BLAST RATCLIFFE FOR HALTING ELECTION INTERFERENCE BRIEFINGS

Other critics of ODNI’s decision were quick to say the Trump administration is playing into Russia’s hands.

“President Trump is hoping Vladimir Putin will once more boost his candidacy and cover his horrific failures to lead our country through the multiple crises we are facing. And he does not want the American people to know the steps Vladimir Putin is taking to help Trump get re-elected,” Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said in a statement.

An author of a new book defending looting is sparking outrage after an NPR interview in which she said looting gives people “an imaginative sense of freedom and pleasure.”

“Looting strikes at the heart of property, of whiteness and of the police,” author Vicky Osterweil said in the interview. “It gets to the very root of the way those three things are interconnected. And also, it provides people with an imaginative sense of freedom and pleasure and helps them imagine a world that could be. And I think that’s a part of it that doesn’t really get talked about — that riots and looting are experienced as sort of joyous and liberatory.”

MINNEAPOLIS STORES LOOTED AS MAYHEM ERUPTS FOLLOWING GUNMAN’S SUICIDE: POLICE

Riots and looting have torn through American cities since the death of George Floyd in police custody in May. They were reignited again in Kenosha, Wis., after the police shooting of Jacob Blake Sunday. There also was looting in Minneapolis this week after a suspected gunman killed himself as police neared.

While the looting has taken its toll on local businesses and economies already hit hard by the coronavirus crisis, Osterweil said it also works as a “political mode of action.”

“Importantly, I think especially when it’s in the context of a Black uprising like the one we’re living through now, it also attacks the history of whiteness and white supremacy,” Osterweil claims. “The very basis of property in the U.S. is derived through whiteness and through Black oppression, through the history of slavery and settler domination of the country.”

IN EMOTIONAL RNC SPEECH, WIDOW OF RETIRED POLICE CAPTAIN KILLED BY LOOTERS SAYS SHE RELIVES ‘HORROR’ EVERY DAY

The author, who finished the book “In Defense of Looting” in April before the surge in looting over the summer, said she does not condone home invasions or the taking of property by force, and later said that looting “freaks people out.”

“But in terms of potential crimes that people can commit against the state, it’s basically nonviolent. You’re mass shoplifting. Most stores are insured; it’s just hurting insurance companies on some level. It’s just money. It’s just property. It’s not actually hurting any people,” she says.

The author appears to have little sympathy for local and small businesses destroyed by the criminal activity, claiming “they are no more likely to provide worker protections.”

“They are no more likely to have to provide good stuff for the community than big businesses. It’s actually a Republican myth that has, over the last 20 years, really crawled into even leftist discourse: that the small business owner must be respected, that the small business owner creates jobs and is part of the community,” she said.

The interview quickly picked up heat online, with many expressing disbelief both at Osterweil’s views, as well as taxpayer-funded NPR’s decision to give them such an airing.

“This glorification of looting and property damage is absolutely despicable and shameful, @NPR,” Erielle Davidson, policy analyst at the Jewish Institute for National Security of America, tweeted.

Hillsdale College Professor Ben Winegard, meanwhile, called the column “absolutely bats***.”

“To be completely clear, she has the absolute right to express these views and make her case. She should not be harassed,” he tweeted. “However, the arguments are extremely poor and I’m shocked that NPR had her on for an interview.”

“If you’re re-elected, you’ve got nothing to prove. You’ve done it again. [Should] we expect to see a different style from you? ” he asked.

“First of all, I understand that 100%, but I haven’t been treated fairly,” Trump responded. “I have to fight back.

“If I don’t fight back strong, I wouldn’t be sitting here right now talking to you. So it’s not like …,” he trailed off, before adding, “Gee I’d like it to be calm too.”

Trump touted his response to the coronavirus pandemic and credited his aggressive approach for the country’s progress on the development of a vaccine.

“I wouldn’t have gotten [done] all of these things,” he said. “I can give you a list that’s four pages long…Right to Try, all of the medical things that we’ve done…even the vaccines,” he said.

“We’re almost going to have a vaccine. Somebody else would have taken years to get it. If I had a different attitude, that list would be one-tenth as long as it is. “

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will tout American values he says Facebook champions to defend his company’s size at a congressional hearing on Wednesday about antitrust issues with Big Tech.

Mr. Zuckerberg will call Facebook “a proudly American company” that would not have succeeded without U.S. laws encouraging competition and innovation, in contrast to China’s communist system, according to his prepared remarks for a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing.

“We believe in values—democracy, competition, inclusion and free expression—that the American economy was built on,” Mr. Zuckerberg will say, according to his prepared remarks. “Many other tech companies share these values, but there’s no guarantee our values will win out. For example, China is building its own version of the internet focused on very different ideas, and they are exporting their vision to other countries. As Congress and other stakeholders consider how antitrust laws support competition in the U.S., I believe it’s important to maintain the core values of openness and fairness that have made America’s digital economy a force for empowerment and opportunity here and around the world.”

Mr. Zuckerberg plans to tell House lawmakers that the success of apps such as Instagram and WhatsApp has been made possible by developing within Facebook rather than as independent companies.

Alongside Mr. Zuckerberg, House lawmakers will hear from Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Apple’s Tim Cook, and Google’s Sundar Pichai on Wednesday afternoon.

Attorney General William P. Barr on Tuesday defended his management of the Justice Department against Democrats’ allegations that he has politicized it.

“I am supposedly punishing the president’s enemies and helping his friends,” a combative Mr. Barr said in testimony before the House Judiciary Committee.

“What enemies have I indicted? Could you point to one indictment that has been under the department that you feel is unmerited — that you feel violates the rule of law? One indictment,” he said.

Mr. Barr also pushed back against allegations that he was doing political favors for President Trump’s associates. He cited the criminal case against Roger Stone, a longtime GOP operative and friend of the president.

The attorney general said he brought the criminal case against Stone case, calling it a “righteous prosecution.”

Stone was convicted last year of lying to Congress, witness tampering and obstruction. Justice Department prosecutors had recommended an initial sentence of between seven to nine years.

However, Mr. Barr later recommended a lesser sentence sparking a firestorm in Washington. Democrats accused him of doing favors for Mr. Trump’s friends, and all department lawyers prosecuting the Stone case resigned from it.

Mr. Barr said reducing the sentence was the right call. He said he got involved to “rectify the rule of law.”

“The line prosecutors were trying to advocate for a sentence that was more than twice what anyone else in a similar position had ever served, and this is a 67-year-old man, first-time offender and no violence,” he said.

“I agree the president’s friends don’t deserve special breaks, but they also don’t deserve to be treated more harshly than other people,” Mr. Barr said.

Mr. Barr reasserted his independence again in a testy exchange with Rep. Hank Johnson, Georgia Democrat.

Mr. Johnson accused the attorney general of changing the Stone sentencing recommendation in response to a tweet by the president blasting case prosecutors.

As Mr. Barr tried to answer the question, Mr. Johnson repeatedly cut him off.

“I’m reclaiming my time. I know you don’t want to answer the question. The facts are clear …,” Mr. Johnson exclaimed as he interrupted Mr. Barr’s efforts to answer the question.

“Let me ask you. Do you think it’s fair for a 67-year-old man to be sent to prison for seven to nine years?” Mr. Barr shot back, maintaining that he did not discuss the case with anyone in the White House.
