Speakers at Monday’s Democratic National Convention slammed President Trump’s response to the coronavirus crisis, with some of the most searing remarks coming from Kristin Urquiza, a woman from Arizona whose father is among the 167,000 fatalities.
“His only preexisting condition was trusting Donald Trump, and for that he paid with his life,” Urquiza said.
Here are some significant developments:
- The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, one of the largest schools to insist on holding in-person classes, is switching to an entirely remote model for undergraduates after just one week. Clusters of novel coronavirus cases had been reported in a fraternity house and several residence halls.
- Two Utah fur farms have seen the first U.S. coronavirus cases detected in mink, according to the Department of Agriculture. Several European nations have found that the animals are unusually vulnerable to the virus and Dutch research suggests they may be able to transmit it to humans, though the science remains unsettled.
- Texas became the fourth U.S. state to record more than 10,000 coronavirus deaths on Monday, according to data tracked and analyzed by The Washington Post.
- The president of Mexico volunteered to receive the recently developed Russian vaccine against the coronavirus, saying he would welcome an injection if the method is proved to work. Public health experts have expressed concern the vaccine was not properly vetted before Russian authorities approved it.
- In Wuhan, the initial epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, an electronic music concert at a water park brought together thousands of maskless, swimsuit-clad revelers over the weekend, Agence France-Presse reported.

After coronavirus forced school closures, the U.K. used an algorithm to estimate exam results. It favored elites.
LONDON — Following a national outcry, the British government on Monday made a dramatic U-turn on using an algorithm to estimate how students would have done on exams they weren’t able to take because of the coronavirus lockdown.
The algorithm, which relied heavily on a school’s previous track record on exams used in university admissions, appeared to benefit students at exclusive fee-paying private schools and penalize top-performing students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The estimates it generated threatened to lose some students the spots they had been offered at universities this fall, and that sparked outrage in a country where educational opportunities disproportionately favor those from elite backgrounds.

Daughter of coronavirus victim blames Trump for her father’s death
Urquiza said her father believed Trump when the president said that healthy people with no preexisting conditions would probably survive the virus. When Ducey lifted Arizona’s stay-at-home order, Urquiza’s 65-year-old father went to a bar, trusting that officials knew best. After he fell ill, he was put on a ventilator and died alone.
“His only preexisting condition was trusting Donald Trump, and for that he paid with his life,” Urquiza said Monday.
She added that once she shared her story, others who lost loved ones began to reach out with theirs.
“They asked me, a normal person, to help because Donald Trump won’t,” Urquiza said. “The coronavirus has made it clear that there are two Americas: the America that Donald Trump lives in, and the America that my father died in. Enough is enough.”

Trump says mail-in voting could be ‘catastrophic.’ Here’s how other countries do it.
The novel coronavirus pandemic has made voting more complicated — and potentially dangerous. For many countries, remote voting, either by mail or online, could offer a solution. Some nations that have held elections during the pandemic, including Poland and South Korea, promoted mail-in voting.
Ahead of the November presidential election, the Trump administration has done the opposite. At a news conference Saturday, President Trump said universal mail-in voting would be “catastrophic” for the United States. “It’s going to make our country the laughingstock of the world,” he told reporters.
Trump blocked an emergency infusion of federal funds for the U.S. Postal Service because he wanted to restrict voting by mail, he said last week. Elections by mail pose a fraud risk, he said without evidence, and argued that ballots would take too long to process. But Trump’s critics say he is blocking, for political reasons, a practice that is common around the world.

Karaoke is a health risk during a pandemic. These superfans are desperate for it to return.
You could call Gian Gozum a karaoke superfan.
Among his group of friends, the 30-year-old government analyst was the one to suggest starting or ending their night at a karaoke bar. Singing pop hits was his favored way to celebrate a promotion or gather for a team-building exercise, and it was also how Gozum chose to celebrate his birthday: Bringing a crew to a D.C. karaoke hotspot, such as Chinatown’s Wok and Roll or Adams Morgan’s Muzette, and renting a room for a couple of hours. He’d kick the party off with Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer.”
Like so many other things, his birthday bash this year fell victim to the coronavirus pandemic, as the District’s karaoke bars — like many around the country — have remained silent since March. “These days, I haven’t found much of a solution for karaoke,” Gozum says. “I’m mainly singing in the car, or singing as I do household chores.”
It may be a long time before Gozum, or anyone else, belts out their favorite song in front of friends and strangers in a crowded room again.

WASHINGTON – Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., took to the House floor Thursday morning to deliver a candid rebuke of sexism in Congress and beyond in response to comments from Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., who had reportedly called her a vulgar insult.
In comments overheard by a reporter for The Hill newspaper, Yoho confronted Ocasio-Cortez on a staircase in the Capitol on Tuesday, calling her “disgusting” for her comments linking poverty and crime. As she left, Yoho said, ‘”f—— b—-,” according to The Hill.
Yoho denied he had targeted the profane remarks at Ocasio-Cortez in an apology delivered on the House floor Wednesday morning.
“Having been married for 45 years with two daughters, I’m very cognizant of my language,” he said. “The offensive name-calling words attributed to me by the press were never spoken to my colleagues and if they were construed that way, I apologize for their misunderstanding.”
Ocasio-Cortez, however, said Yoho was “‘refusing responsibility” in his apology, in a speech that quickly went viral.

I would also like to thank many of my colleagues for the opportunity to not only speak today but for the many members from both sides of the aisle who have reached out to me in support following an incident earlier this week.
About two days ago I was walking up the steps of the Capitol when Representative Yoho suddenly turned a corner, and he was accompanied by Representative Roger Williams. And accosted me on the steps right here in front of our nation’s capitol.
I was minding my own business, walking up the steps, and Representative Yoho put his finger in my face, he called me disgusting, he called me crazy, he called me out of my mind. And he called me dangerous. And then he took a few more steps and after I had recognized his – after I had recognized his comments as rude, he walked away and said, I’m rude, you’re calling me rude. I took a few steps ahead and I walked inside and cast my vote.
Because my constituents send me here each and every day to fight for them. And to make sure that they are able to keep a roof over their head. That they are able to feed their families. And that they are able to carry their lives with dignity.
I walked back out and there were reporters in the front of the Capitol, and in front of reporters, Representative Yoho called me, and I quote, a f—— b—-. These are the words Representative Yoho levied against a congresswoman. A congresswoman that not only represents New York’s 14th district but every congresswoman in this country because all of us have had to deal with this in some form, some way, some shape at some point in our lives.
And I want to be clear that Representative Yoho’s comments were not deeply hurtful or piercing to me. Because I have worked a working-class job. I have waited tables in restaurants. I have ridden the subway. I have walked the streets in New York City. And this kind of language is not new. I have encountered words uttered by Mr. Yoho and men uttering the same words as Mr. Yoho while I was being harassed in restaurants. I have tossed men out of bars that have used language like Mr. Yoho’s, and I have encountered this type of harassment riding the subway in New York City. This is not new. And that is the problem.
Mr. Yoho was not alone. He was walking shoulder to shoulder with Representative Roger Williams. And that’s when we start to see that this issue is not about one incident. It is cultural. It is a culture of a lack of impunity, of acceptance of violence and violent language against women, an entire structure of power that supports that.
Because not only have I been spoken to disrespectfully, particularly by members of the Republican Party, and elected officials in the Republican Party, not just here, but the President of the United States last year told me to ‘go home’ to another country with the implication that I don’t even belong in America. The governor of Florida, Governor DeSantis, before I was sworn in, called me a ‘whatever that is.’ Dehumanizing language is not new. And what we are seeing is that incidents like these are happening in a pattern. This is a pattern of an attitude towards women and the dehumanization of others.
So, while I was not deeply hurt or offended by little comments that are made, when I was reflecting on this, I honestly thought I was going to pack it up and go home. It’s just another day, right?
But then yesterday, Representative Yoho decided to come to the floor of the House of Representatives and make excuses for his behavior. And that I could not let go. I could not allow my nieces, I could not allow the little girls that I go home to, I could not allow victims of verbal abuse and, worse, to see that — to see that excuse and to see our Congress accept it as legitimate and accept it as an apology and to accept silence as a form of acceptance, I could not allow that to stand. Which is why I’m rising today to raise this point of personal privilege.
And I do not need representative Yoho to apologize to me. Clearly, he does not want to. Clearly, when given the opportunity he will not. And I will not stay up late at night waiting for an apology from a man who has no remorse over calling women and using abusive language towards women. But what I do have issue with is using women, wives, and daughters as shields and excuses for poor behavior.
Mr. Yoho mentioned that he has a wife and two daughters. I am two years younger than Mr. Yoho’s youngest daughter. I am someone’s daughter too.
My father, thankfully, is not alive to see how Mr. Yoho treated his daughter. My mother got to see Mr. Yoho’s disrespect on the floor of this house towards me on television, and I am here because I have to show my parents that I am their daughter and that they did not raise me to accept abuse from men.
Now, what I am here to say is that this harm that Mr. Yoho levied, tried to levy against me, was not just an incident directed at me, but when you do that to any woman, what Mr. Yoho did was give permission to other men to do that to his daughters.
He — in using that language, in front of the press, he gave permission to use that language against his wife, his daughters, women in his community, and I am here to stand up to say that is not acceptable.
I do not care what your views are. It does not matter how much I disagree or how much it incenses me or how much I feel that people are dehumanizing others.
I will not do that myself. I will not allow people to change and create hatred in our hearts.
And so, what I believe is that having a daughter does not make a man decent. Having a wife does not make a decent man. Treating people with dignity and respect makes a decent man. And when a decent man messes up, as we all are bound to do, he tries his best and does apologize. Not to save face, not to win a vote. He apologizes genuinely to repair and acknowledge the harm done so that we can all move on.
Lastly, what I want to express to Mr. Yoho is gratitude. I want to thank him for showing the world that you can be a powerful man and accost women. You can have daughters and accost women without remorse. You can be married and accost women. You can take photos and project an image to the world of being a family man and accost women without remorse and with a sense of impunity. It happens every day in this country. It happened here on the steps of our nation’s Capitol. It happens when individuals who hold the highest office in this land admit, admit to hurting women, and using this language against all of us.
Once again, I thank my colleagues for joining us today.

]]>INGLEWOOD, Calif. (KABC) — Cheers echoed through Centinela Hospital in Inglewood as COVID-19 survivor Michael Orantes was finally ushered back into the arms of his family.
It had been touch-and-go for the 32-year-old construction worker who was hospitalized for 93 days.
The head of the hospital said that Orantes battled a “catastrophic storm.”
A lung collapsed repeatedly.
“His heart started taking a pounding. His brain started taking a beating,” says Dr. Paryus Patel.
Orantes descended quickly after a trip to Spain. He was on a respirator, unconscious for over two months.
He’s from a devoutly Christian family. His mother calls his awakening a resurrection.
“We give thanks to God that he has done a miracle to our son Michael,” said Pedro Orantes.
The patient prayed for for a miracle, too. He thought about his 2-year-old girl, Elizabeth, who missed him at home.
The outlook was dire in the moments before he was intubated. He mustered a plea.
“He said, ‘Make sure I wake up. I have a daughter.’ So that crushed me. Heartbreaking,” said Dr. Anna Carchi with Centinela Hospital.
With heaving sobs, relatives took turns embracing Orantes as members of their church sang songs and praised the Centinela Hospital staff.
Orantes’ medical team did not take a single day off at this community hospital for 90 days.
The hospital doctor says it was their moral duty.
“Treating patients and saving lives. Is that something of amazement? No, that is our job,” said Dr. Patel.

]]>The daughter of a slain New York City police officer spoke out against the vilification of cops taking place amid the nationwide protests against police brutality.
“It’s honestly truly disheartening,” Genesis Villella told “Fox & Friends.”
Villella said that, having lost her police officer mom, she wants Americans to remember that police officers have families as well.
“They have children and loved ones that need them to come home unharmed. I just want everyone to know those police officers are human too. They have fears, they have love, and they bleed just like the rest of us,” Villella said.
“People like my mom, who was the most amazing person in my life, deserve to not be executed the way that she was because just because of her uniform.”
NEW YORK CITY COP ‘ASSASSINATED’ IN THE BRONX
Her mother, Officer Miosotis Familia, 48, was shot in 2017 by Alexander Bonds while she sat in the front seat of a mobile command post.
Familia, a 12-year veteran of the force, had been stationed in the mobile command post, which is used during major events and in high-crime areas.
“Tunnel to Towers” founder Frank Siller, who accompanied Villella in the interview, said that so far this year 116 police officers have died in the line of duty by either murder or other methods. Siller said that the foundation will make sure to offer support to those who are left behind due to their relatives in law enforcement being killed.
“They have given us the gift of a home,” Villella said.
Villella said that the Tunnel to Towers Foundation kept their promise of never forgetting the sacrifice her mother made.

“And also to never forget us, the surviving family. We’re still affected by this tragic loss,” Villella said.
Tunnel to Towers is a non-profit organization that started supporting Gold Star families through $11 minimum donations from people around the country. It was started in honor of Siller’s brother, Stephen, a firefighter who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel toward the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001, while wearing 60 pounds of gear. Siller was one of 343 members of the FDNY who were killed that day.

On Saturday night, Katherine Williams-Dunning, a daughter of country singer Hank Williams Jr., died in a car crash in Tennessee.
It was reported that the car drifted over the median on a highway and started to roll over.

Williams-Dunning, 27, was in the car with her husband, Tyler Dunning, 29, who was airlifted to a hospital for unspecified injuries.
On Sunday, Holly Williams took to Instagram to pay tribute to her late sister.
Holly, also a singer, shared a family photo with several members of the Williams clan that was taken just days ago.
“I have no words. On Friday morning I talked the family into taking this picture and had no idea it would be our last together with my precious little sister Katie,” the caption read. “We all went to my great aunts funeral on Thursday whom we all loved dearly, and now are faced with another one. ALL we need is prayers. My daddy. My little brother. Katie’s husband (he is awake and responding don’t know injury extent yet). My niece and nephew. Her Mama. The Dunning family. All of us. So. Many. Prayers. Jesus is close. Thank you all.”

Holly, 39, finished her post with a passage from the Bible: “Be merciful to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and my body with grief. Psalm 31:9.”
The death was confirmed by Sam Williams, Katherine’s brother and yet another singer, on Facebook. His social-media profiles have since vanished.
“My sister and brother in law have been in a terrible accident. Please pray for them so hard! Katie Williams and Tyler Dunning,” Williams wrote.
Their father, Hank, 71, has been known for the song, “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight,” which he later rewrote as a theme song for “Monday Night Football, among other hit tunes.

]]>A single-vehicle crash in Tennessee on Saturday night resulted in the death of the 27-year-old daughter of country music singer Hank Williams Jr., according to reports.
Katherine Williams-Dunning was behind the wheel of a 2007 Chevy Tahoe, driving south on Highway 79 in Henry County, when the vehicle crossed the median and began rolling over, WSMV-TV of Nashville reported.

The vehicle, which was towing a boat, crossed into the northbound lanes and came to a stop on the shoulder of the road, the report said.
Williams-Dunning’s husband, Tyler Dunning, 29, was injured in the crash and airlifted to a hospital with unspecified injuries.
The driver’s brother, Sam Williams, announced the crash in a Facebook post.
“My sister and brother in law have been in a terrible accident. Please pray for them so hard! Katie Williams and Tyler Dunning,” Williams wrote.

Their father, Hank Williams Jr., 71, is known for the song, “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight,” which he rewrote as a theme song for ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.

Lori Loughlin‘s daughter Olivia Jade spoke out about using her “white privilege” to combat racism in a new post on her Instagram Stories.
The YouTube personality committed to calling out racist acts as thousands of demonstrators took the streets across the nation over the weekend to protest the police killing of George Floyd.
The 20-year-old influencer, whose parents just pleaded guilty for their participation in the college admissions scandal, wrote that white people “need to understand that just ‘not being racist is not enough’ if you hear people saying disrespectful things, correct them.”

But she faced criticism online.
“SHES THE DEFINITION OF WHITE PRIVILEGE SHE CONTRIBUTED TO IT WILLINGLY…her parents cheated her way into a school and only got 2 months in jail..she is not allowed to speak on the matter,” one person wrote on Twitter.
“Her white privileged got her out of trouble,” said another. “She needs a reality check! So tone deaf!” expressed someone else.
One person wrote: “The college admissions scandal contributes to the sense of outrage felt by many who take to the streets and violently protest systemic entitlement, privilege and discrimination, while sweet lil olivia jade drops make-up tutorials like nothing happened. dumb, clueless and tone deaf.”
Meanwhile in the post, Jade said she’s aware of her white privilege and hopeful about being part of the change in the future.
“If you see something that doesn’t look right… do something!!!!!” Jade wrote. “THIS NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. FOREVER! And as a person who is born into privilege based on my skin color & financial situation I was not always aware that these issues were still so present. And that makes me feel awful. But that also fuels me.”
“Don’t sit there & allow this to continue happening,” she added. “And if someone says something like ‘no one is around that offense’ or ‘it’s a joke’ it should offend ALL of us speak because it’s outright wrong and disgusting that humans talk/treat each other humans THE way we’ve seen.”

“We need to support and stand up and speak and USE OUR WHITE PRIVILEGE TO STOP THIS. We need to stop complaining about the smallest things because the black community are fearful of dying and being oppressed every single day just on the way they look and how they were born. Time to step up and keep making noise because this cannot continue to happen. It’s disgusting,” Jade said.

Floyd was a 46-year-old black man who died in police custody over Memorial Weekend after a white Minneapolis police officer responding to a call kept kneeling on his neck. In a now-viral video, Floyd can be heard telling the cop, “I can’t breathe.”
The four officers involved in the incident have been fired and Derek Chauvin, the officer who had his knee on Floyd’s neck, has been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Meanwhile, Jade’s mother, Lori Loughlin, and father, Mossimo Giannulli, just pleaded guilty in the college admissions scandal and will each serve time behind bars.
In late May, the judge neither rejected nor accepted the terms of their plea agreement, saying he’ll issue an official ruling after reviewing pre-sentencing reports. The couple is scheduled for official sentencing on Aug. 21 at 2:30 p.m. for Loughlin and 11 a.m. for Giannulli.

Loughlin pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, while Giannulli pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud and to honest services wire and mail fraud.

The New York Post and WABC, both citing local law enforcement sources, reported on Sunday that the mayor’s daughter was arrested for unlawful assembly the night before. She was allegedly arrested after she and other protesters refused to unblock a street in Manhattan.
The demonstration on late Saturday came as the city entered a third day of protests over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died last week shortly after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck during an arrest.
According to The New York Times, hundreds of people have been arrested following a string of demonstrations in the region, some of which involved looting and arson.
Shortly after his daughter was arrested, Bill de Blasio reportedly called for protesters “to go home” during a press conference on late Saturday.
“We appreciate and respect all peaceful protests, but now it is time for people to go home … If you went out peacefully to make a point about the need for change, you have been heard and change is coming in the city. I have no doubt about that. It’s time to go home so we can all move forward,” he said then, according to The Post.
He also reportedly took aim at some protesters he said have an “explicit agenda of violence” in remarks on Sunday, the paper reported.
“It is a small number of people. It is well organized, even though many of the people are associated with the anarchist movement,” he said earlier.
