Gov. Andrew Cuomo went down to Georgia Monday to advise local officials there on how to curb the coronavirus pandemic — but critics said the trip was nothing more than an ill-conceived public relations stunt given all the deaths that New York suffered.
New York was the hardest hit by the COVID-19 outbreak in the early spring and more than 25,000 residents have died from the killer bug — more than any other state. And Cuomo has come under heavy criticism for his early edict that may have led to more than 6,000 nursing home deaths.
While the pandemic has eased in the Empire State following shutdown orders and social distancing measures, the pandemic is now raging in the Peach State and other parts of the country and New York officials are already planning for a “Wave 2” to hit New York.
Upstate Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin called Cuomo’s trip “absurd and obscene.”
“Cuomo is acting like a conquering hero. New York leads the nation cases and deaths. He refused to act early and failed to contain the coronavirus. His policies contributed to more deaths in nursing homes,” McLaughlin, a Republican, said of the governor, a Democrat.
“This trip is unbelievable. He’s definitely trying to rehab his image.”
The trip could also be viewed as a slap at Georgia’s Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, who has battled with Democratic mayors in the Peach State over how to handle the outbreak. Kemp sued Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms over the city’s mandate for residents to wear masks, which he opposed as onerous.
Cuomo has rarely left the state during the pandemic, save for trips to Washington to discuss the public health crisis with President Trump.
The three-term Democratic governor insisted he wasn’t visiting Savannah as a public relations offensive to toot his own horn.
“I feel compelled to go because I know a little bit about this,” Cuomo said.
“It’s not me who’s going: It’s the people of New York that’s helping the people of Savannah and Houston … We’re in a position to help. We have knowledge.”
He said it was important to provide support for officials in other states now grappling with the pandemic after 30,000 Americans from other parts of the country came to New York’s aid in March and April — many first responders who toiled in hospitals overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases.
“We’re doing everything now to pay it back,” Cuomo said. “People did just amazing things.”
The governor said his team, meanwhile, was delivering “thousands” of pieces of personal protective equipment.
Cuomo was scheduled to hold a 2:15 p.m. public roundtable meeting with Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, a Democrat and Brooklyn native, after holding private talks on best practices to fight the pandemic.
Georgia is among the 23 states on the state travel advisory list for rising cases of COVID-19, meaning visitors from there must quarantine for 14 days upon entering New York.
Cuomo said he was not quarantining upon return because he considers himself an “essential” employee — though he will be tested for COVID-19 when he comes home later Monday.
Reached for comment, top Cuomo aide Rich Azzopardi said, “Give me a break, even the CDC said New York was hit the hardest because the Trump administration moved too slow to ground European air travel. What we did do is put into place a successful fact- and number-based reopening that has been praised by Dr. Fauci and this anti-science Travel Sized Trump has been trying to undermine every step of the way.”

]]>Gov. Andrew Cuomo must have a short memory — either that or he’s just trying to distract attention from his administration’s deadly coronavirus failures by criticizing President Trump’s many lifesaving actions.
During a recent press conference, Cuomo took yet another cheap shot at Trump, arguing that the president’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic was somehow worse than the infamous Watergate scandal.
“You look at the facts, the facts clearly demonstrate Trump was wrong from Day One, and New Yorkers have been right from Day One,” Cuomo bragged.
The problem is that Cuomo has been resoundingly — and tragically — wrong about the pandemic himself. And unlike the Trump “scandal” that exists only within Cuomo’s imagination, Cuomo’s failure of leadership has been very real. More people have died of COVID-19 in New York than in any other state — at least 6,000 of them in our nursing homes. That is not something to be proud of.
On March 25, Cuomo’s Department of Health issued a mandate forcing New York nursing homes to admit coronavirus patients — a move that alarmed infectious-disease experts nationwide.
“If you introduce 4,500 people sick with a potentially lethal disease into a vulnerable and notoriously imperfectly monitored population, people are apt to die,” said Dr. Charles Branas, chairman of the Epidemiology Department at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health.
The executive director of the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, Christopher Laxton, also sharply condemned Cuomo for failing to consult clinical experts prior to implementing the policy.
After blistering criticism, the controversial mandate mysteriously disappeared from the Department of Health Web site, but it took almost two months for Cuomo to officially revise the deadly order. By that point, the damage had already been done. Many New York nursing homes had become breeding grounds for the virus, which turned out to be particularly dangerous to the elderly and infirm — exactly the sort of people who reside in nursing homes.
The Department of Health has now published its own report defending the March 25 order, but my colleagues and I are preparing for a public hearing and calling for an independent probe into the Cuomo administration’s mandate to make sure we get the full, unvarnished truth.
The people of New York, nursing-home staff and the families of coronavirus victims deserve real answers from their governor — not deflection and partisan sniping.
Meanwhile, in contrast to Cuomo, President Trump has gone above and beyond to help New York win its battle against the virus, providing federal assistance whenever we needed it most. For instance, the White House deployed a Navy hospital ship, USNS Comfort, to Manhattan, which Cuomo himself admitted “not only brought comfort but also saved lives” in New York City.
At the president’s direction, the Army Corps of Engineers worked closely with state authorities to convert the Javits Convention Center and Westchester County Center into dedicated COVID-19 hospitals.
Trump also secured thousands of ventilators for New York (that we ultimately, fortunately, did not need) and millions of items of personal protective equipment for our first responders and health-care workers. Our heroes were unable to rely on Cuomo or Mayor Bill de Blasio, but they were able to count on Trump.
Not long ago, the New York governor openly praised the president’s response to the pandemic, cheering that Trump “delivered for New York” and that “by and large [his strategy] has worked.”
After the outbreak of the pandemic, I was careful not to pass early judgment against our elected leaders and their handling of the coronavirus. The loss of people’s lives should never become a partisan issue, but Cuomo has made it clear that he is all-in on politicizing this virus, even as it has already killed more than 32,000 of our fellow New Yorkers.
Cuomo’s desperate attempts to shift blame for his own failures onto the federal government must not distract us from the facts: New Yorkers must hold Gov. Cuomo and his administration accountable for their deadly failures.

Politico took aim at Democrat New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a report Friday, saying his “coronavirus halo” has begun to “fade.”
“Two and a half months into the crisis, Cuomo’s take-charge attitude has begun to soften,” Politico reporters Anna Gronewold and Erin Durkin wrote. “The governor, who gained legions of fans for his briefings that blended an authoritative tone with a personal touch, is increasingly on the defensive — and casting blame on the federal government and its guidance.”
Cuomo has been under increasing scrutiny for the controversial nursing home policy implemented in March that critics say is responsible for thousands of deaths among senior citizens in the state.
“Gone is the split-screen Cuomo often shared with President Donald Trump early in the outbreak,” the Politico piece continued. “Now, Cuomo is still briefing daily, though in not as big of a national spotlight, while Trump has shied away from the podium.”
Democrat state Assemblyman Ron Kim slammed the governor, who said in the early weeks of the pandemic that the “buck” stops with him.
“It’s ludicrous. You can’t one day say you can blame me and the buck stops with me, and the next day pass the buck to anyone besides yourself,” Kim told Politico, while Cuomo’s secretary Melissa DeRosa said: “We will take our responsibility; we embrace it.”

Cuomo’s March 25 order required nursing homes to take in COVID-19 patients. Then, on May 10, Cuomo issued a new directive stating that hospitals cannot send patients back to nursing homes in the state unless they tested negative for the virus. The move appeared to largely invalidate the March 25 directive.
However, senior Cuomo communications director Peter Ajemian has insisted in an email to Fox News that it was “not accurate” to state that Cuomo had “reversed” the March 25 order. “He didn’t reverse or rescind anything,” Ajemian wrote at the time. “The order is still in effect,” adding that Cuomo “did add a directive.”
When confronted about the nursing home policy, Cuomo placed blame on the Trump administration, saying: “The state followed President Trump’s CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] guidance.”
“New York followed the president’s agencies’ guidance,” Cuomo said during a press conference Saturday. “… What New York did was follow what the Republican Administration said to do. That’s not my attempt to politicize it. It’s my attempt to depoliticize it. So don’t criticize the state for following the president’s policy.”

However, New York State Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, a Democrat from Manhattan who has called for an independent investigation into the more than 5,700 nursing home deaths, isn’t buying it.
“The federal government never told New York to tolerate low staffing levels in nursing homes or to have a lax or understaffed enforcement of health and safety safeguards in nursing homes,” Gottfried told Politico. “The executive branch — going back decades — has done that all by itself.”

Earlier this month, Politico had some choice words for the naysayers in the mainstream media who blasted Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for reopening his state.
In its coronavirus newsletter, Politico reporters Marc Caputo and Renuka Rayasam said Florida was “not a post-apocalyptic hellscape of coronavirus infection and cadavers stacked like cordwood,” and that the media’s treatment of DeSantis was much harsher than its treatment of Cuomo.
“Florida just doesn’t look nearly as bad as the national news media and sky-is-falling critics have been predicting for about two months now,” they wrote. “But then, the national news media is mostly based in New York and loves to love its Democratic governor, Andrew Cuomo, about as much as it loves to hate on Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.”
MSNBC’S STEPHANIE RUHLE SLAMMED FOR ‘SOFTBALL INTERVIEW’ WITH CUOMO AMID NURSING HOME CONTROVERSY
Caputo and Rayasam said “DeSantis looks more right than those who criticized” his decision to slowly reopen the state, pointing to the fewer than 2,000 dead and the roughly 43,000 statewide cases, which was “a fraction of the dire predictions” that were previously made, also noting that Florida’s coronavirus numbers are “dwarfed” by New York’s and that “more people reportedly died in New York nursing homes than in all of Florida.”
“DeSantis is actually polling worse than Cuomo in their respective states, and the Florida press is wondering why,” the newsletter continued. “Part of that is style. Cuomo has a smooth delivery, a deep and calming voice and an attitude that projects he can answer any question. DeSantis sometimes comes across as peevish and defensive, has made a misstatement or two and was mocked for struggling to put on a mask. But most of the difference between DeSantis and Cuomo is due to politics. DeSantis governs a politically divided state. Cuomo is a scion of Democratic royalty in a deeply Democratic state.”
The Politico reporters acknowledged that “media bias” is a major factor, noting how Cuomo has a press that “defers to him” and “preferred to cover ‘Florida Morons’ at the beach.”
“Maybe things would be different if DeSantis had a brother who worked in cable news and interviewed him for a ‘sweet moment’ in primetime,” the reporters wrote in an apparent swipe at CNN anchor Chris Cuomo’s softball interviews with his governor-brother.

However, they said DeSantis “can’t quite take a victory lap” since he “deferred to local leaders early on” and how “more than 1.4 million unique unemployment claims have been submitted, but only half have received compensation.”
“DeSantis is trying to get fixed quickly. He knows that in a state he won by less than half a point two years ago, and one that President Donald Trump won by slightly more than a point in 2016, it’s a political time bomb to have potentially hundreds of thousands of people blaming the party in power for their woes in an election year,” the newsletter concluded.

Knicks and Nets players are expected to soon have the option of taking part in voluntary workouts at their practice facilities in Tarrytown and Brooklyn, respectively, after Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Sunday greenlit New York professional teams being able to holding training camps.
It remains to be seen how many of the players plan to take advantage of that option, though, since many of them aren’t in the area and instead with their families instead during the coronavirus pandemic. Two Knicks – Taj Gibson and Frank Ntilikina – have remained local, as have several Nets. The teams’ two facilities have been closed due to state shutdown laws. Under the NBA guidelines for opening facilities, no more than four players were allowed to work out together at one time and no coaches were allowed to participate. Scrimmages were also prohibited.
The Nets announced Saturday they will open HSS Training Center for voluntary player workouts May 26. The Knicks, when contacted by The Post, did not have a comment on the news. According to a source, the Knicks are still receiving clarification from the NBA. Twenty-one teams have opened their facilities for voluntary workouts after the NBA announced it would allow franchises to do so in accordance with their local government.
Commissioner Adam Silver is expected to give further guidelines after June 1 to ramp up workouts in group settings, as the NBA is in talks with Disney and ESPN’s Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla. to host the remainder of its season as early as late July. Official training camps aren’t expected to begin until mid-to-lane June and it remains to be seen if those will be held at team facilities or in Orlando.
The other issue is if the Knicks will have any games left to play. It is unclear if the NBA will bring back just the 16 playoff teams, complete the regular season or have a play-in tournament. If that includes 24 teams, it would involve the Knicks, who finished the postponed regular season in 12th place in the Eastern Conference. The Nets, who are in seventh place, would be involved in virtually any of the reported plans. The Post previously reported a few Knicks players were wary of returning to New York because of the virus that has ravaged the city, though it has seen declining deaths and fewer cases in recent weeks.

]]>Gov. Cuomo will never be confused with Fiorello La Guardia. “When I make a mistake, it’s a beaut,” the legendary mayor of New York once confessed.
Unfortunately, Cuomo’s pride and political calculations don’t allow him to admit error even as he finally reverses one of the mostly deadly policy mistakes in New York history.
Nursing homes and rehabilitation centers have tallied more than 5,000 coronavirus deaths, yet the governor accepts zero responsibility despite his March 25th order forcing them to take infected patients from hospitals.
Now he says they no longer have to do that, announcing Sunday that “a hospital cannot discharge a person who is COVID positive to a nursing home.”
Indeed, the initial order denied nursing homes the right even to ask if patients being sent by hospitals had tested positive for the coronavirus.
Now hospitals must do discharge tests and only those who are negative can be referred to nursing homes.
Said one nursing home executive, “It feels at least a month too late.”
The move comes amid growing calls for an independent investigation of the nursing home catastrophe, where the death count dwarfs the total deaths in every other state except New Jersey.
Still, Cuomo claims the reversal is not a reversal, nor is it a recognition of the fatal impact of the initial order.
“Whatever we’re doing has worked, on the facts,” he insisted.
He should try selling that view to Maria Porteus. She lost her father, Carlos Gallegos, to the coronavirus in a Long Island nursing home last month soon after the state forced it to accept infected patients. She watched the governor Sunday and was left steaming.
“I’m still angry and I’m still hurt,” she said. “It’s a slap in the face for him because he’s not taking responsibility for what happened to my father and so many others.”
Porteus said she’s part of a Facebook group that has nearly 250 members who lost loved ones in nursing homes, adding: “The stories are all almost the same. And Cuomo’s still acting like he’s not the one who did this order, like it’s somebody else or it’s the nursing homes’ fault.”
Arlene Mullin, who lost her father under similar circumstances, also was unhappy with Cuomo Sunday. She said in an e-mail:
“In light of how many mothers lost their lives, it was distasteful to use his press conference as a tribute to his mother. He could have called her privately to wish her well on Mother’s Day. It was insensitive to those people whose mothers died in nursing homes due to his cruel policy.”
Cuomo insists the nursing homes “could have resisted” taking COVID-positive patients if they had no ability to care for them. The order, he seemed to be saying, was only meant to ensure that such patients were not discriminated against.
That point, he conceded, “was never really communicated,” as if the March 25 order was not meant to be taken verbatim.
So the only failure is a failure to communicate, though he didn’t specify whose failure that was. Certainly not his.
There are two gaping holes in that argument. First, nursing homes never believed they had any right to deny infected patients, saying the order from the state Department of Health would have included that option if that were the intent. The order’s language did not offer any hint of flexibility.
“No resident shall be denied re-admission or admission to the NH solely based on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19,” it reads. “NHs are prohibited from requiring a hospitalized resident who is determined medically stable to be tested for COVID-19 prior to admission or readmission.”
Worse, the order came without warning, took effect immediately and gave the homes no time to set up segregated beds and staff.
All nursing homes, good and bad, large and small, were treated as if they were fit for an influx of coronavirus patients.
The second problem with Cuomo’s claim is the case of the Cobble Hill Health Center, which lost at least 55 patients to the virus. The CEO, Donny Tuchman, showed reporters April emails where he asked state health officials for assistance, and was turned down. He also asked them if COVID-19 patients he had could be sent instead to the Javits Center or the Navy ship Comfort, both of which were far below capacity. He was rejected again.
It’s true there was one way Albany officials did help beleaguered nursing homes. The packages of equipment they sent included body bags.

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo wasn’t the only member of his household to contract COVID-19: his 14- year-old son and his other half, Cristina, likewise came down with the virus. Now, Cristina is stating that part of the “Cuomos’ Corona Protocol” is adding half a cup of Clorox bleach to her bathwater. She declares it combats radiation and metals in her system and oxygenates it. Often bleach baths are recommended by physicians for skin illness like eczema, however are there really benefits for fighting COVID-19?
